Dolphins didn’t offer Rex Ryan defensive coordinator job

Philbin

Former Jets coach Rex Ryan has plenty of options for 2015, including TV and, possible head coaching jobs with (for now) the Falcons or the 49ers. Contrary to at least one published report, he doesn’t have -- nor does he want -- an opportunity to become the defensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins.

Per a source with direct knowledge of Ryan’s employment options, Ryan has not been offered that position.

Apart from Ryan’s lack of interest in taking a step down the coaching ladder, it’s a major stretch to think that Dolphins coach Joe Philbin would be interested in adding Ryan to the staff. Having Ryan around would give owner Stephen Ross a quick and easy in-house replacement for Philbin, if the Dolphins struggle in 2015. And it would create a major distraction if/when the season starts poorly, with constant speculation over if and when Ross would fire Philbin and promote Ryan.

If Ross truly wanted Ryan, Ross should have fired Philbin and hired Ryan. Plenty of Dolphins fans would have preferred the Philbin-for-Ryan swap. Which makes it even less likely that Ross would hire Ryan to work for Philbin.
