Buccaneers announce Dirk Koetter is their new offensive coordinator

The Buccaneers have their new offensive coordinator.

Dirk Koetter, who spent the last three seasons as the offensive coordinator of the division rival Falcons, is now the offensive coordinator in Tampa Bay.

Last year Bucs head coach Lovie Smith hired Jeff Tedford as his offensive coordinator, but the team was forced to scramble after Tedford left the job because of health problems. Now Smith has a new coordinator in place.

Prior to serving as offensive coordinator of the Falcons, Koetter was offensive coordinator of the Jaguars. He has also been head coach at Boise State and Arizona State, and offensive coordinator at Oregon, Boston College, Missouri, UTEP and San Francisco State.

Great hire. A new QB coach would be nice, too.

Even with only one winning season on his pro resume he has to be an improvement on the pathetic job done by Arroyo.

Honestly, while Trestman made a lot of sense, this may be a better hire for Mariota. Trestman was more for McCown, who has one year left, at most, as the starter in Tampa.

He was great the first year in Atlanta for us but each year after that our offense fell off a little each year. He loves the screen game.

Lovie Smith is the Josh Freeman of coaching.

Look at his college career at Oregon, Boise State, and Arizona State for a clue gang. THIS is an awesome hire for the Bucs and their new franchise QB from Oregon.

I will not defend Jameis Winston but on the field he’s already a better pocket passer than 60-70% of the STARTING QB’s in the NFL.

Great hire, will scheme offense to Winston’ s strenght.

  9. theargiope says: Jan 8, 2015 7:33 PM

Falcons lost games due to their worst defense in the NFL. Their offense was top 10 in every column except running back, which isn’t Koetter’s style anyway.

    Huge upgrade for Tampa.

Well, who meshes with dirk best?

Glennon, who played for Matt Ryan’s college coach.

    McCown, the veteran.

Winston, the best talent since Andrew Luck with the biggest off the field issues since Tyrann Mathieu.

If the Bucs choose Mariota over Winston they are out of their minds

Great hire, we might actually have a game plan and strategy now …..
    Super MARIO will like Dirk

    Welcome back, Koetter.

This is bigger than most people understand right now. Koetter’s former QB coach was Mark Helfrich, who is the current Head Coach at Oregon where Marcus Mariota is, so that’s huge! If the Bucs can bring Helfrich on there will be great continuity with Mariota.

    Oregon coach ain’t going anywhere

Thank you Tampa from all the Falcon fans
He calls great plays, but does not incorporate the strength and weakness of the personnel he is working for ….. Unless he changes his tune Tampa will go no where…..this guy needed to go 2 years ago….thank you Tampa, what he accomplished in Atl with the talent he had, what do you think he will do in Tampa…..lol

in keeping with the Lovie Smih tradition of hiring a new oc every year the search has already begun for koetter’s replacement in 2016.

  18. raiderapologist says: Jan 8, 2015 11:05 PM

Koetter already knows who Tampa is drafting, or he wouldn’t take that job.

Great Hire Tampa. I’m a falcon’s fan and I’m here to tell ya, u guys have a good OC. Offense was top 10 in the league 3 str8 years even when we had losing records. That’s telling u something….on top of that? First year? that offense almost got us to the Super Bowl. So enjoy him…good coach. Guess we gotta find some1 else to call the plays in the ATL.

What happens when Kelly takes the pick for Shady McKoy and a couple no. 1’s ?

  22. nyctraffic says: Jan 9, 2015 12:35 AM

It is funny how excited fans get about their team hiring a retread from another losing team. Koetter should take plenty of blame for the utter lack of creativity and variation Atlanta showed on offense the past two years. I watched every play this season. Their only breakthrough running talent, Antone Smith, scored a TD of at least 37 yards every 6 times he touched the ball, but Koetter only allowed him a few touches per game, choosing instead to run Steven Jackson up the middle two downs per series for a total of four yards. I think most of Atlanta’s fans cringed at his play-calling. It was Ryan and Jones who salvaged our offense, not Koetter.

Not super excited about the hiring, but al least now we won’t have the equivalent of an equiptment manager or maybe a 7th grade gym coach calling plays for us moving forward.

Tampa with mike Evans and Jackson?? I would take over Julio & roddy … Julio is a stud but white is on the decline

  25. neemdaddy13 says: Jan 9, 2015 8:59 AM

This is a great hire for the Bucs!! Guy is probably head coach material. Bodes well for Mike Evans.

  26. ronin262 says: Jan 9, 2015 10:46 AM

As a Bucs fan I sure hope they draft Mariota or trade the pick. I don’t think Winston will pan out, he will show up with his posse and the grief will begin for whichever team drafts him.

  27. ohmylovie says: Jan 9, 2015 11:06 AM

Lovie hires the guy who lit up his great defense so this guy must be good.

    This is so Lovie hahaha
    Never change Lovie, never change.

i disagree. what if, in an interview, they get bad vibes from Winston’s character??? Mariota has potential too and a guy like Koetter (who was the OC when Boise State beat Oklahoma) comes off as creative enough to have a fine offense to use with a guy like Mariota. if they take Winston, i don’t think that’s a bad move either though, but i think Mariota can be a great QB too. now Winston is more pro ready, that’s true, but he’s also got the most questionable character which nfl teams are big on..so if they pass on Winston, they must have a reason.

  29. jimmy53 says: Jan 10, 2015 8:29 AM

Anyone who thinks Mariota grades out better than Winston for the pro game doesn’t understand football– or is blinded by hater-itis.

As for the comment above about Winston having issues during the interviews—anything can happen I suppose, but his coaches throughout his career have phenominal things to say, and his football intelligence is off the charts. Don’t believe all of the crap ESPN has been spoon feeding the viewers for the past two years. I feel comfortable saying it’s a 90% certainty Winston goes first…

  30. labucs says: Jan 12, 2015 3:29 AM

Don’t kid yourself. Losie is the OC. Koetter will create offensive plays and Losie will dictate what he can and cannot do.
