Don Shula calls Bill Belichick “Beli-cheat”

Reuters

Since the 2007 Spygate controversy, Patriots coach Bill Belichick has been referred to as “Beli-cheat” a number of times, but usually by fans of rival teams. Not by Hall of Fame coaches.

But that’s the name Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history, uses to refer to Belichick.

Dave Hyde of the Sun-Sentinel writes in a profile of Shula at the age of 85 that when the subject of Belichick came up, that unflattering nickname was Shula’s response.

“Beli-cheat?” Shula says.

Shula’s 1972 Dolphins have the only perfect season in NFL history. Belichick’s 2007 Patriots, who went 16-0 in the regular season but lost in the Super Bowl, were the team that came the closest to joining the ’72 Dolphins with a perfect season. And Shula apparently thinks that Belichick, whose team got caught that year taping opposing coaching signals, achieved his success using something less than sportsmanlike means.

It’s not something we would have expected to hear from Shula, who rarely speaks out or makes waves in retirement. Shula must not have warm feelings toward Belichick. Or Beli-cheat.

  1. Sounds like someone is worried about the one coach currently in the league who can overshadow his legacy. Kinda petty there Don. Maybe you should stick to opening more overpriced steak restaurants.

  2. What does this mean? Simple: from now on, when someone says, “Beli-cheat”, and someone else says, “pfft, whatever”, the response is, “Don Shula calls him `Beli-cheat’, too.” And that will irk Pats fans, despite their claims to the contrary. Thank you for this gift, sir!

  3. I’ve been turned off by the ’72 Dolphins ever since it came out that they get together and celebrate every year when the last undefeated team loses their first game of the season. Most professionals say nice things about the individuals that break their records and offer congratulations on a job well done. Its called showing class. After all, who else would know how difficult it is to reach that pinnacle of success. Sometimes its just better to take the high road.

  4. This man is irrelevant. Coaching in a non-salary cap era with one of the greatest QB’s ever (Marino) and he didn’t win squat for the last 15 years of his career.

  5. I wonder what videotaping New England did of the Ravens practice this week? Between there recording antics, Belicheat and Tom Brady’s Uggs New England is the most unlikable team in all of football. And thats a fact.

  6. When the greratest teams of all time are discussed, the ’72 Dolphins are never in the conversation. The 60’s Packers, 70’s Steelers, 80’s 49ers, and even the 90’s Cowboys would’ve slapped Shula’s teams around. That’s why Don is a bitter old man.

  7. …says the guy who agreed to coach the Dolphins while he was still under contract with the Colts.

It’s unfortunate that a guy who has been so classy, for so long, is letting things slip like this in his advancing years.

  8. Ok, can someone please tell me. Were the Pats the only ones taping other teams? Was it really illegal or an un-written rule? What is the real deal behind what happened, its all so fuzzy to me.

  9. Dona Shula spent years with a draconian and Dolphins centered influence of the Competition Committee. That is oodles worse.

And again, filming coaching signals is not illegal. Stealing signals is not illegal. Nor were those rules in place during the title runs. Don Shula accomplished nothing after 1972. He stopped being relevant during the Nixon administration.

  10. When I was coming up I thought if you worked hard and smart and were a fair and honest person good things happen for you. In growing up I’ve kearned that it is extremely rare for someone, anyone who is successful not to cheat in some form or another, there are many who are simply never caught-I wonder if coach Shula might be one of the many? (And I’m a Baltimore Colts fanatic from way back-Unitas, Berry, Mackey, Orr(sville), Lenny Moore, Big Daddy Lipscomb, Tom Matte etc, etc, etc)

  11. This old man ran the rules committee for years, was constantly working the refs, never got over the snowplow game and generally hates the Patriots because they have owed the division for the millennium- sour grapes gramps!!!

  12. I think two things are clear. Belichick will bend the rules as far as possible to win, and no one cares about Schula in 2015. Whether or not Bill is a “cheater” is for talk radio.

  13. The league found he cheated and punished him for it. Shula didn’t have to say that but when you get that age I guess you can say what you want. No big deal.

  14. It amazes me with these Miami Dolphins and anyone associated with them… When someone comes close to breaking their records be undefeated or coaching when they resort to slander

  15. Sounds like a nasty bitter old man, throwing a tantrum because Belichick is scouring his name from the record books little by little.

  16. Would love to read the link but you have to be a subscriber. Poor choice to provide link if it requires a subscription. Virtually useless to people who don’t read that site every day.

  17. Surprised that an NFL hall of fame coach could be as ignorant as your run of the mill fan. I’ll defer to what Chuck Knoll – a better (and apparently better informed) coach – had to say about the matter.

  18. True. Passage of time doesn’t change that the Patriots were caught doing what the rest of the league was doing (and that Jimmy Johnson admitted on a Fox broadcast that the Cowboys did in the 90s). The Patriots filmed signals from the wrong place in the stadium. That was their crime. Not that they filmed the signals, but that they did it from the wrong spot.

  19. Its cool to know that Shula is a real fan like us (me) who loves to poke a stick at the angry man in Boston.

ps: Shula went undefeated with a backup QB…

  20. After the 1969 season, Joe Robbie, owner of the Miami Dolphins, signed Shula to a contract to become Miami’s second head coach. As a result of Shula’s signing the team was charged with tampering by the NFL, which forced the Dolphins to give their first round pick to the Colts.

Sometimes, you have to bend the rules to win.

  21. Shula is just jealous because even with his undefeated season, coaching nobility consists of Lombardi, Landry, Knox, Parcells, and now Belichick

nobody thinks of Shula in those terms. He is an afterthought, and he knows it.

  22. Some stains won’t come out no matter how many times you wash them. like it or not, this is one of those stains. Just sayin.

  23. Less teams. No salary cap. No free agency. And one Super Bowl to show for it. Belichick will take his five rings, and not even one is tainted since the banning of filming of practices from the stands only became a rule in 2006, after his wins.

  24. Ouch!! LOL… Thatta boy Shula, throw those jabs!

It’s one and done for NE this year – we all know what Baltimore is gonna do to them at Gillette on Saturday.

  25. This has a hollow and petty ring coming from the man that ordered the tarps off the field during a monsoon a couple days before the AFC Championship game in the early 80’s in order to slow down the Jets offense and the Sack Exchange. It worked. Miami squeaked out a win in a virtual mud bath. Of course, this was “back in the day” when we dis not have instant 24/7 news cycles starved for content, and “gamesmanship” was approved with a wink and a nod. This guy also got on the rules committee and changed various rules to suit his offense and Dan Marino. Nothing this guy says, or anything any of the highly overrated 72 Dolphins say (like Mercury Morris) should be taken seriously. I don’t believe any team they beat in 72 had a record above. 500 and that may also include the Super Bowl Redskins who may have been above .500 after the playoffs, barely. And they barely beat them. I never liked Shula because he was always using his position to manipulate the system looking for an edge. I think this is a classic case of the pot and the kettle.

  26. Did Belichick knowingly cheat or not? Did other teams of his era cheat? Did Shula’s Baltimore Colts or Miami Dolphins employ questionable tactics to gain an advantage? Who knows. But a Hall of Fame coach like Shula saying this this way seems kinda petty (even if it is true)…..

  27. Unlike the Patriot hating trolls, at least Shula has an excuse for making dumb comments–he’s senile.

  28. Shula just sayin what everyone already knows.
Belichik hasnt won a legitimate Lombardi trophy, he cheated to get them.
Only simpleton Pats fans consider him a “genius”, those who have a brain know that the real Genius in football is Mr. Pete Carroll.
Everyone and every franchise wants to emulate the Seahawk Way

  29. Let me see if I get this straight Coach Don. The cameras were in the wrong locations in game one. Jets coach Eric Mangini tells this to the referees. Then the referees remove the cameras so they cannot be used in the second half of the first game of the season.

Then they win 18 straight games. Now how did they do that with out cameras? Must have found another way to cheat?
Come on Don…the whole spygate thing was a joke… driven hard by the media.

  30. I respect Shula’s legacy as much as the next NFL fan, but, here’s a fact that even his most ardent admirers might not know:

Shula coached up until 1995. In what year did he coach his last ROAD Playoff win? (Super Bowls don’t count, because they are neutral turf)

The answer? 1972. After that season, Shula never won a single road playoff game.

  31. Uh, Don – recall when your Dolphins were docked a first-rounder for tampering in your hire?

He was still the coach of the Baltimore Colts at the end of the 1969 season, when then-Miami owner Joe Robbie approached him and signed Shula to a contract. The NFL charged the Dolphins with tampering and awarded their first-round pick to the Colts.

  32. 19-1
    Never gets old………priceless.
What have the Patriots done since getting caught cheating?
Winning the leagues worst division with an automatic 5 wins most years and then getting beat down in the playoffs by legitimate teams sure isnt much to brag about

  33. Fact- Bill Belichick cheated.
Whether or not he did it once or hundreds of times, he still ultimately cheated.
The NFL’s record books should have an *asterisk* next to any record made by Coach Belichick or any player from the Patriots team he coached, from the time he was hired in New England to the date the cheating was found to be happening. This includes the Superbowl and Playoffs too!
He is a disgrace to players and coaches that put in the time and follow the rules of the game!! SMH

  34. Don Shula is the best. He had a long and great career and earned the right to say whatever the hell he pleases. Someone once found a playbook for the Raiders who also were once a great organization that won consistently and he refused to use it to his advantage. That’s why what guys like Belichick do bothers him. He has more stand up character in his pinky than most coaches and players.

And why the hate for the ’72 team??? Because they meet every year and celebrate their accomplishment? You do something great in sports that absolutely no one else in almost 100 years has been able to accomplish and tell me you won’t be proud of it. They have every right to be proud of it and should be. It’s not that they’re happy the current teams lost, it’s a point of pride that no one else has been able to accomplish it.

  35. Cowboys, Eagles, Redskins, Bills, Dolphins, Jets, Falcons, Panthers, Buccaneers, Texans, Jaguars, Titans, Bears, Lions, Vikings, Bengals, Browns, Cardinals, 49ers, Rams, Broncos, Chiefs, Raiders and Chargers.

    Zero Superbowl wins since Spygate!

Oh yeah, and the Patriots as well.

  36. Sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt you. Less of course your a sensitive girly Patriots fan then you get all freaked out.

  37. Class??????

Please Coach Don… you really shouldn’t throw stones when you live in a glass house:

The Dolphins surrendered their 1971 first-round pick to Baltimore as compensation after being judged to have tampered with Shula in their quest to have him run a club that was a 3-10-1 in its last AFL season of 1969.

    Now Don was that fair????

  38. If you interview 85 year olds, you will get a lot of unfiltered, inflammatory (and maybe even funny) opinions. Kind of like interviewing 5 year olds.

  39. Eh, I seem to recall a game or two where Shula “forgot” to cover the field before playoff games, turning it into a marsh. Oh, but everyone else was doing it, right?

  40. Since Shula was involved in tampering to get him to the Fins that cost Miami a 1st round pick he should probably shut up.

Not to mention this happened several years ago, not this week.

    SMH

  41. Is there a group of people more bitter at everything that happens in the league than the ’72 Dolphins? All they do is whine and complain and disparage every team that comes close to their record. And someone really needs to shut Mercury Morris up. Just hurry up and fade away into irrelevancy already

  42. Shula diminishes himself with this type of thing. Belichick is an easy target for the angry, embittered, envious, and jealous. I guess Shula is one of them now. Sad.

I’m sure he’s very envious of being so far removed from the limelight while Belichick is going to be in the big show again this year. Every year Belichick and the Pats are in the post-season. That in and of itself is an accomplishment that ANY team ANYWHERE would take over their own. Legendary – hence the anger and vitriol directed as it is.

Another great year for the Pats – and it’s not over yet folks. Watch and enjoy!

  43. When I was young the only thing I knew about NFL football was that Shula was a cheater, my dad made sure I knew…

  44. Oh Don, your perfect season was so long ago that they even play more games per season now. No one really remembers playing 14 games a season. You are just trying to stay relevant and hope someone will listen to you before you die. Bill Belichick is a great coach and Don looks stupid trying to demean him in anyway. Very unbecoming. Go open another lousy steakhouse Don.
This guy is such scum that he talks to another team without permission after the Colts fell apart. Goes to a better team to secure his “legacy.” He lives in a glass house for sure. Stop throwing stones.

  45. Best game day coach in NFL history, and I love the man, but this was a bush league comment from a guy who was famous for seeking any edge he could get, including keeping the tarp off the field to let it get muddy. I’ll cut him some slack in his old age, but Bill is the closest thing to Shula I’ve ever seen. Familiarity breeds contempt?

Yet, Shula has nothing but praise for Philbin, who is a mediocrity.

  46. What a bitter old classless crab. Anyone who knows anything about the situation knows that taping signals is legal, the Patriots just taped them from the wrong place. The whole thing was blown out of proportion by the media.

The passage of time doesn’t change facts, Pats fans.
    ==========================

I disagree, every year spygate is like a fish story for all the Patriots hating trolls. In ten years spygate is going to be about how the Patriots filmed signals, practices, walk throughs, had microphones in all of the opposing teams locker rooms, had all the phones tapped of the other 31 teams, covered up Bengazi and the IRS scandal, circumvented the salary cap, paid off refs… You get the point.

I wont argue that it wasnt a shady practice, but it also wasnt against the rules until 2007. So all of the trophies that everyone likes to say have an asterisk, really dont, because they didnt violate any rules or anything until 3 years after their 3rd Lombardi. Just saying

  48. No Pats fan but I despise Dolfans also. Shula was head of referees competition committee in the 70s. Those cheating dolphins received many favorable calls.

  49. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Shula’s hands aren’t clean either. How about the time he soaked the field before a playoff game against the Jets so his ground game could have the advantage over the Jets’ passing game?

Pure BS from a long time whiner. That’s all this is.

  50. Doesn’t everyone not from New England call him that? I think it’s hilarious that an 85 year old is calling people names. When I’m that age, I won’t give two craps about anything. Of course, I’ll be too busy acting inappropriate with every woman under the age of 60 to care about anything else.

  51. My two cents on this matter.

    1) Whose the ONLY coach in NFL history to lose going 18-1 in their season? Only two other teams have done that…84 49ers and the 85 Bears, both of which won THEIR super bowls in blowout fashions. Yep that would be the “brilliant” BB, whose playoff record as a HC after spygate is a “SPARKING” 9-8.

    2) 17-0 is still 17-0, doesn’t matter if you play all the crap teams that year. They beat TWO teams in those playoffs who were 10-4 and 11-3 respectively. One of those teams started a dynasty in two years (Pittsburgh). Also they beat a 11-3 Redskins team who had a better point differential than them all season.

Finally, if they were so vastly overrated…tell me why did they win again the NEXT season? I’m not even an AFC fan (49ers) but as TUNA said once…YOU ARE WHAT YOUR RECORD SAYS YOU ARE! Shula won a SB with a backup QB, BB couldn’t even get to the playoffs with a backup QB in 2008.

    Shula > BB all day!

  52. Not really a fan of the 72 dolphins. Great team no doubt, but has Beli-cheat won anything since they got caught cheating? Uum No!

  53. And what has Miami accomplished since then?? A big fat ZERO. What did Shula accomplish with his star QB Marino? Another ZERO. What a waste of talent that was.

Here are the records of the teams the ’72 Dolphins beat (what a joke):

    KC: 8-6
    HOU: 1-13
    MIN: 7-7
    NYJ: 7-7
    SD: 4-9-1
    BUF: 4-9-1
    BAL: 5-9
    BUF: 4-9-1
    NE: 3-11
    NYJ: 7-7
    STL: 4-9-1
    NE: 3-11
    NYG: 8-6
    BAL: 5-9

Here are records of the teams the 2007 Patriots beat:

    NYJ: 4-12
    SD: 11-5
    BUF: 7-9
    CIN: 7-9
    CLE: 10-6
    DAL: 13-3
    MIA: 1-15
    WAS: 9-7
    IND: 13-3
    BUF: 7-9
    PHI: 8-8
    BAL: 5-11
    PIT: 10-6
    NYJ: 4-12
    MIA: 1-15
    NYG: 10-6

  54. … and it is shocking to see how angry so many are. So watching the Pats in playoffs year after year (and this year looking to the Super Bowl) must be driving them out of their minds. Clearly.

Read and decide for yourself. The Pat haters are just livid. You have to laugh at them. Too fun!

    Ha ha ha!

  55. you can call him belichick or belicheat but you can’t call him better than The coach MR. DON SHULA!!! Coach Shula won with great character, honor and integrity!!! He has no blemish on his great coaching career not one!!! He would rather have lost honostly than win by cheating as proved in Oakland when a Raiders playbook was found by Csonka and turned over to Shula whom threw it away. Miami ended losing that game!!! Shula may have lost that one but he did somehow manage to win 347 games without any controversy belichick or belicheat cannot say that!!

  56. Might not be a nice thing for Shula to say, but it’s true. If the Pats don’t tape the Rams practices before Super Bowl XXXVI, they don’t win that game.

  57. Don – You had a great year 43 years ago (Nixon was President) to go undefeated but the comment was unbecoming of you. Time to hop off your scooter, bend over, kiss Bill’s rings and acknowledge his greatness.

The Patriots filmed signals from the wrong place in the stadium. That was their crime. Not that they filmed the signals, but that they did it from the wrong spot.

THIS IS FLAT OUT WRONG. JUST MAKE UP WHATEVER YOU WANT TO FEEL BETTER ABOUT BEING CAUGHT CHEATING. see the actual statement from the league below.

‘That was re-emphasized in a memo sent Sept. 6 to NFL head coaches and general managers. In it, Ray Anderson, the league’s executive vice president of football operations, wrote:”Videotaping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent’s offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches’ booth, in the locker room or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game.’

  59. Tinge of jealousy there Don? I think that the old man knows that Belichick is hands-down the best X’s and O’s man in the history of the game, and that when it’s all said and done, will have completely eclipsed Shula’s accomplishments, and will have done so in the era of parity and free agency.

  60. If you read the article on Shula, you will see him and the rest of his crowd dressed in those aqua blue and orange outfits celebrating the 72 team more so than his birthday. These guys hold onto that for dear life itself. You can also hear how egotistical he is in his comments. Shula has never really had much class. He didn’t have to, because he won a lot. It’s those times when he lost, or when he was afraid he might lose something, like a big game, or a record, or notoriety, that his character was revealed.

When he ordered the tarps off the field, in the rain, in Miami, before the AFC Championship game with the Jets, he secured a huge advantage, and that loss for the Jets led to the firing of Walt Michaels, who was probably the best coach the Jets had in the last century with the exception of Weeb Ewbank. If I were Shula, I wouldn’t be so proud of having a hand in the firing of one of my peers through unsportsmanlike acts.SHULA CHEATED, plain and simple.

  61. Spygate was not limited to taping signals, it’s a wide culture of doing anything to win a game. If that is considered classy, Tanya Harding is the classiest person alive. Belichik wasn’t fined for his looks, they didn’t just voluntarily surrender a first round pick. They crossed lines and left a mark on the league’s integrity. Good for Shula not going along with the league’s damage control policy.

  62. That comment is the only reason anyone besides Shula and the interviewer know it occurred.

Shula and the Dolphins haven’t been relevant since Nixon was President.

Actually, yes, he has won more games than any other team since then, including two AFC Championships.

  64. This man is irrelevant. Coaching in a non-salary cap era with one of the greatest QB’s ever (Marino) and he didn’t win squat for the last 15 years of his career.
Ha Ha you are a freekin Idiot…
Don’s Super Bowl QB was a Guy by the name of
    Bob Griese..
They have still done what no other team has..
I’m not a Fins Fan, but I am less of a Bill Belly-ache
fan. He is a dirty, Player-using coach that doesn’t care for the game, just his own ego…
But enjoy it for a couple years when Brady is gone so will Billy Boy…
And you Patriot fans (laugh) that were ready to throw one of the classiest QB/players in the History of SPORTS under the bus early in the year after a few rough games…. shame on you, Bill has rubbed off on you too!!!!

  65. If you woke up tomorrow and heard that Belichick was interviewing to be your team’s head coach, I GUARANTEE you’d be ecstatic!

Fortunately, I don’t have to tune in every week and see Jim “The Corpse” Caldwell, John “What Am I Gonna Do When Manning Retires” Fox, and Jay “I Will Always Be Compared To My Brother” Gruden.

  66. Spygate is a shibboleth that allows people to recognize bitter ignorance amongst their fellow football fans. Goodell handed down the largest fine in NFL history because of the firestorm that was created by the idiots at ESPN that launched a media circus in response to the allegations. Time and again, Goodell has shown himself to be a reactionary bully, handing down punishments based on public perception rather than any sense of justice, proportion or precedent.

Remember, when the Denver Broncos under Mike Shanahan skirted the salary cap so that they could retain both John Elway and Terrell Davis, Commissioner Tagliabue only handed down a penalty of $968,000 and a 3rd round draft pick. And that was in response to a much more direct from of ‘cheating’ that resulted in the Broncos winning two Super Bowls.

Multiple championship winning coaches have come forward to say that they also filmed signals but saw minimal benefit to the practice, including Jimmy Johnson and Bill Cowher. Former Jets coach Herm Edwards was shown on one of the segments released to the public waving at the cameraman, so it’s not like this was some big secret. Even Eric Mangini later lamented the firestorm that his complaint initiated and expressed regret for the debacle that followed.

In order to understand why Spygate is much ado about nothing, you have to understand what exactly it entailed. Defensive signals are deliberately hard to decipher since they take place in plain view of everyone in the stadium. As such, in addition to changing signals frequently, there would often be three people on the sideline issuing the signals with two of them being decoys and only one of them issuing the actual play call. The tape that was being recorded could not have been used during the games themselves, there simply is not enough time to analyze the video and turn it into useful information that could be relayed to the offense. The tapes were to help Belichick analyze the play calling tendencies of opposing coaches.

Football is a game of situations. Belichick wanted to answer the question: given a particular score, with so much time remaining, at this down and distance, with this offensive formation on the field, what kind of defense does this coach call for from the sidelines? Filming the defensive signals was the only way to answer this question, because the players on the field will often audible out of the defense that was called in reaction to the offense or will simply run the wrong defensive scheme.

It was essentially an attempt to reverse engineer the play-calling sheets that most coaches have close to hand during a game. It didn’t work on the on the offensive side of the ball because of the in-helmet communication system (which has since been added to the defensive side, negating the practice of filming signals altogether). It allowed Belichick to build a game plan hand tailored to match the tendencies of his opponent. This is why in many of the games early in his career as the Patriots coach there was an appearance of the Patriots playing chess while their opponents played checkers. It changed the way the game itself was played.

  67. shula is the most over rated coach in the history of the league. he owns a lot of records and not because of his greatness but because of his ablity to keep a job and stay in the league for so long. how many coaches don’t get fired after more then 2 decades of sucking.

  68. justice has prevailed when the patriots lost that year. otherwise, it’d be recorded to the record book as 17-0 and winning the superbowl with spygate assistance.

  69. Well, did he cheat?

Did he tape Ram’s practice prior to the Super Bowl?

Did the NFL destroy the tapes and fine him; losing draft picks?

    Yes.

The Patriots have a history of cheating. Period.

Screw that dinosaur and his stupid ’72 Dolphins that went undefeated in Bedrock with like 8 teams.
    ——————————————————————–

    1.) There were 30 teams in 1972.
2.) If you are using “in bedrock” term to refer to ancient history, I’d like to kindly refer you to the last time the Patriots won a Superbowl.

  72. The more people beat down on Belichick and the Patriots the more it goes to show how great they have been so many years.

As for Don Shula I think it is sad he feels the need to talk about a fellow coach that way. So many teams have broken “Rules” over the years maybe if you feel inclined to put an Asterisk against anything if should be all sports everywhere because people are constantly pushing the boundaries to gain an edge.

100 and 28, I’d say they won something. 2 Super Bowls, and made the playoffs all but one year (the one Brady was out).

  74. FiveChampionships…

Thanks for proving my point. That memo went out in 2006. Well after the Patriots had won their Championships. The league decided it wanted to end the practice that all teams were engaged in when they released that memo. Belichick was reading from the rule book which stated “Any use by any club at any time, from the start to the finish of any game in which such club is a participant, of any communications or information-gathering equipment, other than Polaroid-type cameras or field telephones, shall be prohibited, including without limitation videotape machines, telephone tapping, or bugging devices, or any other form of electronic devices that might aid a team during the playing of a game.”
He misinterpreted that rule to mean the filming couldn’t be used during the playing of the game in which the filming was being done. The league wanted to clarify the rule, so they sent out the memo. This all happened after the Patriots won their Championships.

  75. Please, trolls, it’s CHUCK NOLL, not Knoll, not Knox!

Shula’s 70s teams were ravaged by the World Football League or they might have won more.

Regarding, Spygate, I was at the game the rookie Big Ben smoked the Pats and stopped their long winning streak at Heinz Field. That’s the game the Pats filmed the Steelers coaches signals from the opposite sideline.

When the Pats returned and beat the Steelers at Heinz for the AFC title, Hines Ward said immediately after the game………”it’s like they knew every play we’d call.”

    Because they did.

  76. The Pats did not film the Rams’ walkthrough, that claim has been completely discredited and the paper that published the story later retracted it and apologized for reporting the lie without investigating it first.

  77. I’m not a Belichick fan by any means on a personal level and even less so as a coach ever since spygate. But I am surprised that Shula said what he did – if anyone were to check his coaching record with and without Bill Arnsparger as his DC – they would be very surprised at his terrible W/L record. Winningest coach ever? Not without the underrated and under appreciated Arnsparger.

  78. Belicheat!
    Asterisks!
    Spyware!
    Blah blah blah!!
I loooove to come hear and read all of the whiners cry and complain about the New England Patriots. How pathetic do you have to be to go to Amother teams forum and post ranting and raving about something they can’t control?
Btw, this is not the 2012 Ravens, New England will easily dismantle the B’more, then warm up against the Indy/Denver winner and play the Pack/Seahawks in the Super Bowl!!
I can see the anguish on all of these posters as Bill Belichick is being carried off the field in Glendale,Az!!!

Not really a fan of the 72 dolphins. Great team no doubt, but has Beli-cheat won anything since they got caught cheating? Uum No!

    —————————————————–

Actually, yes, he has won more games than any other team since then, including two AFC Championships.
    ———————————–
How many rings did that count for?

  80. Shula was always a sour sport when it came to the Patriots. He hated to lose, and especially to the Patriots. He knows as well as every other football follower that Belichick was doing what every other coach was doing at that time … including what Shula did during his time; he tried to gain competitive advantage over other teams. Shula is just inept and always was. The fact he was never able to win a Super Bowl with Marino in his stable is proof enough of that coaching failure … even while he was throwing to Duper and Clayton. How are those sour grapes, Shula? Enjoy them!

  81. lol @nikobelic2014. If you want to insult Shula talk about his son’s play calling.

  82. No one can take away from the unbeaten Dolphins so just keep trying. How pathetic some of you are. It is what it is, so get over it.
Don probably said what a lot of people think but won’t say, good for him.

  83. Shula knows that one perfect season is the last tenuous grip he has on the remote concept of being the best coach ever, and that by every other measurement Belichik either already has or will overcome him.

And I say this as a Cowboys fan. Belichik deserves every kudo he gets.

  84. Weeb Ewbank> Don Shula

    1969 Super Bowl III

    NY Jets 16
Baltimore Colts 7 (Coached by Don Shula, and favored by 17.5 points!)

The loss by Shula resulted in the destruction of the NFL as we knew it, and the forming of the new NFL which included all of the AFL teams that the NFL said they would never accept. Basically, Shula lost the biggest game in NFL History to Weeb Ewbank and the NY Jets, when public opinion was nearly unanimous that Shula and the Colts would humiliate the Jets. Why don’t we talk about THAT monumental failure Don?

  85. To me spygate is much worse than I had originally thought….after having all of my concerns about Goodell confirmed after the Rice and Peterson situations I have no doubt the reason all of the evidence was destroyed was if it was known what the Pats were really doing it would call into question all of his SB wins with the team, he couldn’t let that happen and tarnish the league. Goodell is a lying rat and no way can you believe anything he says unless there is video proof of it…..

  86. I do love the playoff’s but all this talk of the 72 flippers gets old

That was then this is now and if not for Eli and company the flippers would not even get a sniff

Every team cheats to some extent holding during a play is cheating and if you don’t get called then you got away with cheating.

Hitting a WR out of bounds is cheating if the flag is not thrown

Heck if not for a cheater holding a Lions player the cowboys would be home this weekend

Point being everyone tries to cheat every week

  87. Shula is the most overrated hack of a coach that ever lived. Him and his 72 geezers need to just go away…..they aren’t even in the top 25 of the greatest teams of all time.

  88. There truly is nothing more Don Shula could do to endear himself to the fans of South Florida.

And if anybody can sit on a high horse about character, it’s Shula. There is an infamous story about a Dolphins player (maybe it was an assistant coach) who found a copy of the opposing team’s game plan the day before the game. When it was presented to Shula, he tore it up and threw it away. It may sound quaint, but it beats the hell out of the slimy “everybody else does it, we just caught caught” garbage that comes from Patsy nation.

Of course, the Dolphins won anyway.

  89. I’m glad we had the time to re-visit all these truths about Shula and his so called legacy.

Slipped out of Baltimore in the middle of the night abandoning his employers in order to sign a lucrative deal with the Dolphins resulting in the loss of the Dolphins 1st round draft pick for tampering.

Removed the tarps from the field when it was raining in Miami, if he felt the opponent had a speed or strength advantage.

Had rules changed to suit his offense and Dan Marino (17 seasons with one of the great QB’s in Marino, and he has just one measly title to show for it?)

    Bitter and classless old man.

Thanks for taking us on a “Senti-mental Journey” Don! ROFLMAO!!!

Good point. I forgot about that. Thanks for reminding everyone.

  91. Grow up, Patriots aka Cheatriot fans! Don Shula, as usual, has just told the truth…is it any wonder Shula is ranked 3rd greatest head coach in NFL history behind Bill Walsh and Vince Lombardi, while Belicheat is behind those three, plus George Halas, Chuck Noll, and Paul Brown…why? BECAUSE HE CHEATED! THAT’S WHY! And mostly because he had the greatest QB in the Super Bowl era, Tom Brady? What would this cheater have accomplished without Brady (and cheating)? NOT A DAMNED THING! Tough luck, Cheatriot fans! You have Tom Brady–stop your whining!

  92. If all it took to win in the NFL is spy on a few practices a LOT LESS so called genius coaches would be still coaching…I’ve never really like Belichick but I wont use the Spygate thing as a reason to undermind his success.

  93. pats fans are a little sensitive…so Bella cheat wont be able to make a comment in 40 years..he’ll be irrelevant? His wins won’t count because they were 40 years ago? Get a life losers.

  94. @jeremycrowhurst says:

It’s unfortunate that a guy who has been so classy, for so long, is letting things slip like this in his advancing years.

………senility will do that to you!

  95. As a Miami Dolphin fan I absolutely hate the Patriots football team. That doesn’t mean I pretend that Tom Brady isn’t one of the greatest QB’s in NFL history. I am completely honest when I say Bill Belichick is one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. So what’s with all the Patriot fans coming on here and bashing a hall of fame coach for? He never accomplished anything after the 72 perfect season? Are you kidding me? Dan Marino is over rated? What?!?!

From the 1972 perfect season up till he retired Don Shula won 12 division titles, 4 conference championships, 4 super bowl appearances and 2 super bowls.

How the hell can any of you say Don Shula is irrelevant? Theres a reason why he’s in the hall of fame. Just like theres a reason why Bill Belichick is going to be in the hall of fame.

The fact still remains that as great as Bill is, the entire football world outside of Patriots fans question his superbowls because he got caught cheating. It doesn’t matter if it was “technically” legal. If you film your opponent in a malicious and secretive way to gain an advantage, it’s cheating. The sad part is, they probably would have won at least 1 or 2 of those super bowls anyway without cheating which is why it doesn’t bother me. Tom Brady is that good.

  96. Perfect. Just what the Patriots needed. This idiot who never won a Super Bowl with the greatest passer of all time just provided great motivation. Watch out!

They got caught doing it with a camera.” Bill Cowher

    Now go away.

  98. yourbassist

Thanks for making my statement stronger. I know he went 11-5 but they still did NOT make playoffs. And if BB is so amazing and why did he lose two titles vs Eli? Shouldn’t you have blown them out or at least figure out your pass protection schemes in either SB? Also if you want to get technical: This is the same coach who also drafted Chad Jackson, Ron Brace, Mayweather, Chung, Butler, Cunningham, and so on. The SB teams that he had at his dispose were because of how Tuna drafted with Milloy/Law/Johnson/Bruschi and a few others. He has been more miss than hit lately with his early round picks.

  99. Seriously Don….get over it, as a Steelers fan who some of these so called games took place, i know i am.. I am over the loss to the Ravens. it’s a game…
face it Don, u won a lot of games but Belichick is better than u were….
go Patriots, i want Brady to win another ring this year….

  100. How many times do people have to be reminded that…

    2) THEY FILMED DEFENSIVE SIGNALS VIEWABLE TO EVERYONE IN THE STADIUM FOR ADVANCED SCOUTING PURPOSES. Got caught in 2007 after a 2006 rule change. The memo was sent at the start of the ’07 season and Mangini saw that they didn’t stop. Turned them in. He has repeatedly admitted he wish he didn’t do it and didn’t know the repercussions it would have due to how overblown it was.

    3) THEY DID NOT FILM ANY PRACTICES

    4) THEY DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO OFFENSIVE SIGNALS, ITS HEADSET COMMUNICATION RUN BY THE LEAGUE.

All I ever hear is they were punished for taping practices from people. They don’t even know what theyre talking about most of the time.

    __________________________________
It’s grandfather…………and he was right on the hate for Shula.

  104. For a long time Shula was the only coach on the competition committee. He was the biggest cheater in the league for years, influencing rule changes for his own gain. Everyone said it at the time. Shulacheat!

  105. jda13 – it makes a typical Patriots fan smarter than you.

Belichick did not misinterpret the NFL rulebook – on the contrary, as The Truth About Spygate shows, Belichick read it properly – it was Roger Goodell who misinterpreted it – or more accurately showed complete ignorance of it. Goodell acted against Belichick with complete lack of understanding of what the rulebook actually said – shown when Ray Anderson sent out two memos that falsified what the rules about sideline videotaping actually say, then exacerbated when Goodell was shown up by Belichick and had to cherry pick Article IX and the Miscellaneous Rules to justify slamming Belichick – if he didn’t cherry pick, he would have been forced to admit Belichick had read the rules properly.

  106. Wah wah wah…yeah the pasties news network reported it too (ESPN)…fact is Shula never cheated and accomplished more with less talent than BB has…. BB has had a HOF QB his entire tenure with NE…(note what his record was with Cleveland and no great QB).

Point is, whether you agree with his opinion or not, Shula has the pedigree and right to say what he feel about anyone in football…

Besides at 85 yrs old and is record as a coach, does he really care whether other folks like what he says…

  108. Wow, watch the hackles go up from the New England fans! Seems to have hit a nerve. They DID get caught cheating, didn’t they? That’s the price of being caught cheating, you set yourselves up for eternal scorn.

  109. Spygate was real right haters?

    Pats rings in 01, 03 and 04.

So what happened in 02…..05? What about 06?

Do you think the illegal taping would’ve stopped the Ginats pass rush in 07? Maybe the tapes would’ve showed Harrison how to knock the ball off Tyree’s helmet? Maybe illegal tapes would have made Asante catch that easy pick thrown to him?

    Welker catch that pass?

Maybe….just maybe…Pats played well enough win those games in 01,03 and 04 with a great defense and didn’t make enough plays in 07 and 11 against the Giant’s great defense.

    Nahhhh, that sounds too reasonable

So now Belichick has to hit on every draft pick and win EVERY game to be relevant…OK. That’s realistic. He has not been more miss, check the players and drafts.

  111. Is there anything more pathetic than these old Dolphins holding on to one perfect season like it is more important than life itself? Belichick the man is much more interesting and the one-dimensional Schula and anyone who has met both me knows it instantly.

  112. I wonder what videotaping New England did of the Ravens practice this week? Between there recording antics, Belicheat and Tom Brady’s Uggs New England is the most unlikable team in all of football. And thats a fact.
    ————————————————-

I agree New England is most unlikable team in all of football. We don’t care if all you losers hate us, because that means we are still winning.

Don Shula sounds like a bitter old man because he could not win a Super Bowl with one of the greatest QB’s to ever play the game! I would rather be a winner (that video tapes), than a loser who doesn’t!! Hahahahah haters!!!!!!!

  113. The Patriots have the best record in the league since the ESPN-created “spygate scandal” and have been just 1 play away from winning 2 more Super Bowls, all despite never having a defense as good as the ones they had when they won their first 3.

So if Tyree doesn’t hang on, or Welker catches a ball that hits both palms, all of this is moot? Fact is, it’s hard to win the Super Bowl. It’s why 26 teams have zero rings since spygate. Don’t look now haters, but the Pats have a legitimate defense again. I think you all might be waking up in a puddle of your own tears the morning of February 2nd when you flip on the TV and see highlights of Brady and Belichick hoisting Lombardi #4. The pit in your stomachs as you consume that image makes me smile with glee.

  114. You would think with the hundreds of employees the Patriots had during the time of spygate at least one disgruntled former employee would rat them out. Nope! Not one…..Keep hating!

  115. bucsfan21 says: Jan 8, 2015 2:07 PM

Shula didnt need to videotape 0pposing teams to go undefeated. That 16-0 Patriots season is a complete joke to anyone who isnt a Pats fan.

    ————

Why? That’s the season they were caught in Week 1 1st half and monitored by the NFL for the remainder of the season. So they actually had more scrutiny than any other team.

    Your point makes no sense.

  116. wow it’s about time someone stood up …the patriots got off wat to easy from spygate and belichick still is looked at as a 3 win coach….i wonder in their first sb win does he have a young brady march down the field againg the rams for a field goal with out tapes???? it surprised everyone…would he have beaten the steelers in the playoffs??? seemed like they knew what the steelers were going to do….this is worse than steroids…it was plain old cheating…

  117. Yeah, Tigerlilac, there is something more pathetic…a HC that was caught cheating and that cheating obviously aided him in winning a super bowl, the crowning achievement in the NFL…

If BB had not cheated, this wouldn’t be a story…

No one is denying that BB is a great coach, but geez, what whiners…

  118. He’s right. Did he get caught cheating yes or no? Yes he did. Who cares who else did it(apparently patriot fans think all coaches did it). If other teams were doing it why wasn’t there more fines handed out. Did he cheat? Yep. Is his nickname Billicheat? Yes.

  119. 2002 and 2005. Two years that will live in infamy.

The two years the Pats forgot to turn on the sideline videotapes which would have guranteed them Lombardi trophies.

Or maybe BB ordered his cronies NOT to tape those years so it wouldn’t be so obvious the Pats were cheating. I mean he wouldn’t want them to win 5 in a row right? That would be too obvious.

BB is so smart, what a forward thinker.

    Makes sense right haters?

  120. lechemas –

“A lot easier to go 16-0 with no salary cap…”

Really? How often did the Patriots do it? How about any other team than the Dolphins.

yeah, must have been a piece of cake. LMAO….

  121. Also let’s not forget that BB needed a phantom rule that never existed to even advance in the 2001 playoffs…LMAO “genius” “brilliant” these labels are just too unwarranted for someone who gets so much credit and no blame. Get real Pats fans…

  122. Statistically Belichick is 6 wins ahead of the curve in the race to pass Don Shula for most wins ever. Still though he needs 10 more 11/12 win seasons to do it. Will be a tall order to pass the man just because of how long he spent as a head coach.

  123. Whenever something like this happens, the most interesting thing is watching a large portion NE fans overreact.

Why do these accusations sting so much to you folks?

  124. UMMMMM,,,,

Coach Shula..One of the worst cheating issues, covered up somewhat because you were on competition committee….was Dolphins circumventing communication system to Marino’s helmet.

Seems you had lengthy instructions going to Marino, ALOT longer than the 15 seconds allowed [ not sure of that time today].

To this day…Shula burns, absolutely burns..about NE using the ex convict to plow the field for a FG during a 3-0 loss in a snowstorm.

But, WITHOUT the salary cap…Shula could only get Dolphins to SB during Marino’s rookie year,,after that, failure w/arguably the best QB talent in league.

Belichick, has forgotten more about football, coaching x’s & o’s, ..than Shula ever knew.

  125. Of course he is upset. The coach that has won the most games in the history of the league. He knows how hard it is to win a Super Bowl, he knows how disgusting it is to the players, coaches, and fans of the other teams that the patsies cheated their way to his highest professional achievement.

  126. The living legend is only telling the truth. Belichick will always be known as”belicheat”. Its just the way it is. Although, The pats will probably stomp the ratbirds and a week later get stomped themselves.

  127. Mborz, I won’t overreact. We win a lot. Shula and the rest of the Spygate conspiracy freaks can suck eggs for all I care. I wish we had taped more.

  128. If Shula and his ’72 Dolphins so great why are Chuck Knolls Steelers considered to be the best team of the 1970’s and what was the Steelers record
    ’74: 10-3-1
    ’75: 10-2
    ’78:14-2
    ’79:12-4

    1972 Dolphins 17-0

However which team is considered the team of the 1970’s? THE STEELERS. When people think football of the ’70s they think Steelers. When people think football in the 2000’s they think Patriots. As for all the spy gate talk its the past. An if your agreeing with Don his perfect season is also in the past. SoDon just got watch Matlock and take a nap.

  129. I think the great Don spoke the truth. As they say it takes a Great one to spot another cheater. He had the two greatest QB in history, he only won TWO SB all with Bob, not Dan who cared only for Stats. As much as I hate the Cowboys, I respect Tom Landry more then this smelly Fish. If he was such a great coach, why wasn’t his son a great coach at all? Buddy Ryan’s sons Rex and Rob accomplish more.

  130. No one will read this comment since it’s the millionth of the article, but this is why baseball’s HOF is more prestigious. Players like Mcgwire, Sosa, and Bonds are not in the HOF for cheating. Belichick will be a first ballot HOF because the NFL doesn’t care about cheating.

  131. “fact is Shula never cheated”

Yes he did actually. He cheated when he allowed the Fins to tamper with him and take him away from Baltimore, for which Baltimore was awarded the Fins 1st round draft pick the following year.

  132. Shula was the lone coaching member of the rules committee for years and manipulated rule to his advantage, especially PI rules after he got Marino, Clayton and Duper.

And the reality is Shula is still butt hurt over Mark Henderson riding the snowplow out to clear a spot for John Smith.

  133. The whole spygate and “Belicheat” thing is so tired. Other teams have been caught and cited for the exact same thing. If anyone thinks the Pats really achieved what they have in the last 10+ years through “cheating” they’re deluded.

And the remaining 72 Dolphins cracking open champagne whenever an undefeated team loses is a sad gesture, and rooting for and celebrating the downfall of others just to desperately cling to some hint of past glory is really pathetic, and bad karma.

Oh, and the 2007 Pats won more games in that season than the Dolphins did in ’72.

  134. I always admired Shula and his career. But I have to say that his using that phrase come across as classless and immature.

Is he jealous? I mean… Shula had arguably one of the best QBs of all time.. and did not win ONE Superbowl with him. In fact.. only even GOT there once with Marino.

    Maybe senility has set in.

  135. Even if Shula is bitter and jealous enough to believe a minor rules infraction blown way out proportion helped the Pats win SBowls, he still shows no class. As an esteemed HOF coach speaking about another, he really dropped his pants on this one. He reduced himself to the level of childish blog posters. Bush league.

  136. LMAO @ all the Pats lovers. Don has more class in his pinky than some people who’ve posted here have amassed in their lifetime. If there was an Mt. Everest of coaches, only a moron would not have Shula as one of the 4.

  137. What a senile, pathetic old man Don Shula is. Apparently he is still angry about the snowplow game. Let me enlighten Mr. Shula. I know at his age, he is probably losing his memory.

The Patriots went 17-0 AFTER the bogus Spygate non-scandal. The Patriots would have won the Super Bowl if not for a lucky, fluke catch by David Tyree. I suppose if the Pats were videotaping, David Tyree would not have made that catch.

Seriously, Don Shula just can’t take the fact that the Patriots have become the masters of the AFC East and the Dolphins have become a joke.

And Shula, I hate to break it to you, but EVERY team was ‘cheating’ and ‘videotaping’. It was LEGAL. Goodell sent that memo about not to videotape to EVERY team in the NFL, not just the Pats, because EVERY team was doing the same thing as the Patriots.

I’d like Goodell to give the Patriots back the draft pick he stole because this will go down as the most bogus sports non-scandal in history. Don Shula can go shove it. The Pats own his team. Deal with it.

  138. That ’72 Fins team could not possible be more UNLIKABLE.
They act like children whenever given their 15 minutes and that apparently continues right up to their legendary coach.

    Sad.

  139. It’s really sad to see someone that was respected in the league become so bitter that he resorted to name calling like an 8 year old.

One thing in looking up the stats that really caught my attention is that in the 11 playoff years, Belichick’s Pats played in the AFC Championship game 8 times, and with a win Saturday it could be 9 of 12. That’s amazing.

As for the guy who says what have they done in the 8 seasons since Spygate. Here are the stats:
88-24 (79%), 7 Division Championships, played in 4 AFC Championship games (with a win Saturday it would be 5). played in 2 Super Bowl games. No other team is consistently as good, period. The video taping had no effect. If anything, they have been better since Spy Gate 79% wins vs 67% .

  140. @ RayFinkle

If your citing the Baseball HOF for it’s credentials and prestige you must be out of your mind.

Click over on HBT and read some good articles on how pathetic the BB HOF is for voters.

Ty Cobb? Clean? Didn’t cheat? I could name many others.

It happens in all sports. Can you imagine what stories your dad and granddad would have about NFL stars of yesteryear if they had the media coverage of today?

Time to step down off your soapbox of naive-ness and realize people have have been pushing rules, and cheating, since the beginning of sports…it didn’t begin in the 21st Century

Deal with it.

wow. what a cry baby. you cheated. get over it and move on. baby

  142. Im pretty sure they were snitched on the year before they almost went undefeated. Thats why they almost went undefeated. They were trying to prove it didnt matter. And it didnt it wasnt as big of a help as everyone would like to believe. And the dolphins played a punk ass 13 games. They would not go undefeated in todays game with all the new rules and the longer season. Stop hating just cause your team sucks. I coach and play football semi professionally and it wouldnt five you that big of an edge. Teams change there signal calls every game and always have. But hang on to that cause its the only way you can justify us kicking your asses every week and every year!

  143. It’s obvious that they are cheaters but really though, Shula should let it go. He’s a regular Ray Finkle! “Laces Out MARINO!!!” Move forward Don.

  144. I’m confused by all the Patriot’s fans skirting the cheating by claiming it was just stealing signals from the wrong area of the stadium and what not….

do you forget the part where BB video taped the Rams walkthrough at the superbowl, recording every play they were going to run inside the redzone?

How is that forgotten with you fools?

signed, NYG fan, and yes, we own you.

Really?? Tell us more. you mean, you play AND coach semi pro football? We’re all waiting here for you to schools us…..shut up, no one believes you have ever played a sport in your life

  146. Fact – The Patriots were taping Jets defensive signal calling.
Fact – This is against NFL rules.
Fact – The Patriots knew it was against NFL rules.
Fact – They did it because it gave them an advantage.
    …resulting in.
Fact – They cheated to win.

  147. I just lost a lot respect for Shula. I can overlook some of the shady stuff he has done himself through the years that helped his team win games, but for him to point finger at others for doing the same is mind boggling.

  148. “Shula must not have warm feelings toward Belichick. Or Beli-cheat.”
    ————————————————-

The only warm feelings Shula has is when he soils his Depends

  149. Gone are the days of Landry, Shula, Lombardi and Walsh, where the games were fought each weekend in the trenches and not during the week via spies and other assorted scoundrels.

  150. I couldn’t read everything on here, too many so sorry if this has already been said but during the 72 season a opposition playbook opportunity was handed to Shula I think they were practicing at the same facility and somebody left it behind come to think about it could have been a trap, but he threw it out. Really says a lot about the man. The facts, the Patriots did cheat but this is modern football, everybody cheats. As Dolphin I wouldn’t hold that against them. I hate them but they are still the best and what is quite astonishing is how the Patriots have lasted so long in this modern era. As for the Don saying this, well it’s the truth and sometimes old folk are not the most tactful, God bless him.

  151. Shula, like most haters could not explain, while using the NFL rule book and the field operations manual which was in use prior to 2006 season, how the Patriots and Belichick ‘cheated”…just not smart enough. Can any of you explain, while quoting the rules regarding video taping games how they cheated…you can’t because, they didn’t. Their mistake was continuing to do it after Ray Anderson clarified a sentence in the rules in 2006 and he sent out a memo to all teams, meaning ALL team videotaped during games…suck it up buttercup.
John Deer sent a tractor to Don Shula’s house for Christmas….LOL.

Best comment ever, I now love Shula.

    Facts hurt, Pats.

    —————–

Your so called facts don’t hurt. They are the second funniest thing ever. The funniest thing ever is listening to Shula complain about the snow plow game. That’s the funniest thing ever.

Shula, Mercury Morris and any other donkey from the 72 team are almost gone for good. That’s good for every fan of a winning team in the modern NFL.

  153. is tampering cheating?

After the 1969 season, Joe Robbie, owner of the Miami Dolphins, signed Shula to a contract to become Miami’s second head coach. As a result of Shula’s signing the team was charged with tampering by the NFL, which forced the Dolphins to give their first round pick to the Colts.[42] The decision was controversial because Shula and Robbie’s negotiations and signing were conducted before and after the official NFL/AFL merger, respectively. Had the negotiations been concluded before the merger, while the NFL and AFL were rivals, the NFL’s anti-tampering rules could not have been applied.

  154. For anyone that know this former joke of a coach, he is the most OVERATED coach in NFL history. He was given that team in 72 then did NOTHING THE REST OF HIS CAREER. For gods sake he had Msrino, all those very good receivers and nothing to show. As soon as the team that was given to him was no longer together he did NOTHING!!!

The passage of time doesn’t change facts, Pats fans.

    ————–

You’re right. The Patriots still won 3 undisputed Super Bowls. That’s what the record books will say forever Pats haters.

  156. I’m curious how the Patriots even made it to two more SBs without the game breaking footage of the other team’s coach pacing the sidelines. That’s the cliche answer, that they haven’t won since spygate. Well, if they cheated in game 19, wouldn’t they also have done so in 18, 17, and so on? So how did they win all these other games? Are you saying they only cheated in the SBs themselves? Then explain how they beat the Panthers in 2003. The last time the two met was 2001 when CAR was 1-15 with Seifert and Weinke. How would taping signals help against an 11-5 team with Fox and Delhomme?

It was proven that never happened. The story, by The Boston Herald, was later retracted. Unfortunately, the damage was done as ignorant people continue to claim it as true.

On a side note, the Rams only made it into the Red Zone one time during the game, and they scored a TD. Your alleged tape recording of a walk through, which you, living in your Mom’s basement in New Jersey, would know nothing about.

The Giants don’t own anyone. They are generally poor performers but have had some surprising success in the post season. The win in 2007 was kind of like what the Patriots did to the Rams. It happens. You had some luck on your side. Just appreciate it, because in general, that team looks like a cluster flock. Another season like this one and the whole organization is going to be blown up.

Big difference with regards to the Patriots.

  168. Marino > Brady

If Marino played now with these rules, he’d have gone over 100,000 yards…Duper and Clayton would also be in the hall..as they should be.

  169. It’s not something we would have expected to hear from Shula, who rarely speaks out or makes waves in retirement.

    ————————
    Sure he never says anything:

Shula told ESPN’s “Mike and Mike in the Morning” on Thursday that if the Patriots finish with a perfect record to match that of his 1972 Dolphins, then there “shouldn’t be any attachment to it,” referring to a possible asterisk next to New England’s name in the record books.

“If they run the table, and they win all the games, then they are doing it within the rules of the National Football League,” Shula said. “And there shouldn’t be any asterisk to it. That would be the accomplishment that they made. It would be the best in all of sports.”

Shula also said if New England can finish the season with an unblemished record, the Patriots “will deserve to be called the best team.”

He’s just angry because the Patriots went 18-0, before they lost it, which is better then they did. He should relax. 72 was still the only undefeated team.

  170. @simplegodfather

You can’t be that naïve to think “YEARS of tapes” are still helping them can you?

If the Pats are beating YOUR team by using tapes from years ago, most likely with a different QB, Off Coordinator, HC, etc. Than your team, or any team deserves to lose.

You do see coaches cover their mouth when giving plays right? Baseball pitchers cover their face with their glove. Catchers use their legs to block signs to the pitcher.

Her’s a clue, They aren’t covering their mouths to sneeze!

  171. Hopefully Belichick and the Pats can add to their already impressive “post spygate” league best wins and SB appearances this weekend!

  172. herkiethehawk says:
Shula is just jealous because even with his undefeated season, coaching nobility consists of Lombardi, Landry, Knox, Parcells, and now Belichick

Really, he is still has more wins than any other NFL coach… eeevveerrr.

    Shula 328
    Bele 222

Not surprised how many pats fans jumped on this, the one coach truly greater than their demi-god, speaks the truth about Bele-cheat and it’s like kicking a fire ant nest.
    Love it.

  173. Belichick will always be a greater coach, hes dealt with the salary cap and Shula talking about cheating when he cried to have rules changed

  174. Just because they have not won a super bowl since they were caught taping signals has nothing to do with their lack of success. The Patriots and Belichick have been winning every year since 2001. The Patriots have finished in first or second place in their division every year since 2001. Onto Baltimore putz (i.e., Shula). Belichick = Best pro football coach ever.

  175. One coach referring to another in a derogatory name is just tasteless. Shula was a great coach. He had a ton of success. Bellichick has been a great coach and he has had a ton of success. Both are names that will live on forever in NFL lore.

The name calling is below where either man should carry himself.

  176. Zero SBs since getting caught, and they only won their SBs by three points. I’m sure the videos gave them at least a 3 point advantage or Belicheat would not have done it!

  177. To anyone who honestly believes the Patriots were the ONLY team doing this, I have some prime real estate in Iran I want to sell you. If you’re a bit hesitant, I also have some great properties in Libya you might like.

  178. Coach Shula had a backup QB in 1972 when Griese broke his ankle, and they still went undefeated. Bill Belichick lost Brady one year, and they didn’t make the playoffs.

  179. Coach Belichick admitted to the videotaping and took responsibility for it. Coach Shula is not exactly revealing new information. Patriots fans, maybe we should just leave him alone. He is entitled to his opinion.

  180. shula was classless in the 60, 70s, 80s, and 90s so at least he is consistent. By the way if Shula belongs as one of the top 5 greatest coaches in NFL history (he doesn’t) then that would put Marv Levy at #1 with his 14-5 record against Shula.

  181. dolphanphan must be in a time warp.

MIA passed the ball about once per quarter back then, slightly different game in 2008 and even more so now.

Hey, Matt Cassel got a payday due to TB’s lost season. Ask him what he thinks about boo hoo missing the playoffs.

  182. Way to go Don! Tell it how it is. Much respect. Bill got caught and for that he”ll forever be known as Belicheat with asterisks beside his superbowls. Maybe he can request a name change.

  183. Talk about classy.. Disrespecting Shula bc of his old age with all the elderly jokes. Like that’s not an inevitability that we ALL face. Some people have ethics and respect the game.

    *************************

By the way, some people feel Shula threw that game because he knew the result would be a league merger, and he had a huge contract waiting for him in Miami if it happened.

  185. It really is quite simple. Those who understand the specifics of what happened during so-called “spy gate” know there was no cheating taking place, but the Patriots violated a directive fro the league office not to tape defensive signals (which was/is common practice among all teams). They were fined for doing it after the directive.

Poor Don is having some senior moments apparently. As far as others who holler “cheater” ……well, it takes all kinds and some folks just aren’t all that bright.

  186. “do you forget the part where BB video taped the Rams walkthrough at the superbowl, recording every play they were going to run inside the redzone?

How is that forgotten with you fools?”
    ——————————————————–

Yeah, except that never happened. Look it up. It was an allegation made by someone but there is no indication that it actually happened.

  187. Even without a perfect 19-0, the Patriots 2007 season exposed and tarnished the reputation of the 72 Fins. Every journalist began analyzing the Fins sked for the first time.

What? Only a 14 game regular season? A few have taken a 13-0 or 14-0 record into a 16 game season only to lose in the final 2-3 weeks.

What? The Fins played only 2 teams during the regular season that would finish with a winning record and both at 8-6?

What? The Pats in recording their 18th victory to no defeats went where no Fins team ever went? And to get there they beat a 5-0 Dallas team IN DALLAS. A 7-0 Colts team, IN INDIANAPOLIS. A playoff bound Redskins team 52-7. A playoff bound Steeler team by 3 TDs (despite a guarantee of victory by a Steelers player). And they beat the eventual SB champion Giants in the final game of the regular season (when the Giants were starting to heat up) IN NEW YORK. They beat San Diego TWICE, the second time while San Diego was on an 8-0 run.

What? All this winning occurred AFTER the videotaping was revealed and stopped?

No wonder Don Shula is mad.

  188. “Zero SBs since getting caught, and they only won their SBs by three points. I’m sure the videos gave them at least a 3 point advantage or Belicheat would not have done it!”

    —————————————-

There is a fallacy in your reasoning. The Patriots also turned over their all-world defense between 2004 and 2007. Belichick was never able to find the right mix of players to duplicate the skills of Bruschi, Vrabel, McGinest, Law, J. Green (who always had that timely sack of Manning in relief of Seymour), Pfifer, etcetera.

Most dynasties end after 3 in a row or 3 out of 4. Belichick somehow managed to make and nearly win 2 SBs years after the dynasty ended.

This is why the vast majority of coaches who have not had a perfect season tarnished are ready to elevate Belichick to one of the all-time greats (and conversation as all-time greatest).

  189. “When the subject of Belichick came up …”

Ha ha ha. Poor Schuler is haunted by that 2007 season. He must have had a thousand mini-strokes during that year. That was the year the cork stayed in the champagne bottle until the final play of the SB. And even after that, the questions abound: was the 72 Fins ALL THAT?

  190. Don is speaking the truth, I’m not sorry that you Patriots fans don’t want to hear that your legacy is tainted. Zero championships since SpyGate and that isn’t jealousy talking that’s anger that Belicheat wasn’t immediately banished from the sport Pete Rose style.

  191. Shula really comes off poorly. This and popping champagne bottles when some 12-0 team loses its first game, that’s how this guy wants his final years to be remembered?

  192. It’s a good thing Kraft and Goodell are buddies so that all the evidence got destroyed before it truly marred the Pats legacy more than it did. The league didn’t want that black eye so they covered it up.

  193. Shula is right. Spygate is BY FAR the worst thing that ever happened in the history of professional sports at any time.

Bigger than any steroid or PED scandal.

    Bigger than the Black Sox.

In fact it was one of the worst things that ever happened in the history of this country. And there’s no doubt they’re still using spygate to win because all of us intelligent fans know that any team with a QB who can’t even throw 2 yards downfield would be 0-16 every year without cheating.

It’s long past time for Bud Selig to fold this team. Do the right thing sir. Show your integrity. Show your love for the game. Stop the cheating. Kick them out of the NFL.

Or I’m done with the league.

  194. Belichick will probably coach 15 more years (he’s only 63 and his father coached until he was 90) and will undoubtedly surpass Shula as the winningest NFL head coach ever. THAT’s the salt that is rubbing in Shula’s wounds and making him sound like a petty old fool. He knows his legacy will be done.

  195. Shula should talk. He cheated all the time. He used to have as many as 15 guys in his offensive huddle, which was totally against the rules.
Shula owned the Rules Committee for years, and everyone knew that.
And in the 1982 playoff game against the Jets, despite torrential rain the day before and the morning of the game, he ordered the Orange Bowl field not to be covered to neutralize the Jets advantage of speed against his Dolphins. It worked and they played in a virtual cesspool.
Yeah, Shula won more games than anyone. But he was 2 and 4 in the Super ?bowl, and lost maybe the most important game in history to the Jets in 1969, despite being an 18 point favorite. It was certainly more important than any other game to the AFL.
Shula had the best QB of his era in Dan Marino, and one of the best to ever play. But because he never gave him a good running game, Marino never won a championship.
Shula’s 1972 undefeated SB winning team is by far the most over-rated championship team I’ve seen, and I’ve been watching the NFL since 1960. Yeah, the won all their games. But they had a soft schedule and everything just went right for them.
But — you line that team up against all the SB winning teams since the first one, and they wouldn’t even be ranked in the top 15.
Shula is an old man now, so we can forgive him for running his mouth. But his record speaks for itself, good and bad. And the bottom line is he won only 2 championships in 36 years of coaching. That, in the final analysis says it all.

  196. “It’s long past time for Bud Selig to fold this team. Do the right thing sir. Show your integrity. Show your love for the game. Stop the cheating. Kick them out of the NFL.”
———————————————————Bud Selig??? Not even a commissioner anymore. Classic.

  197. Look, I don’t consider videotaping and trying to get a competitive edge against your opponent cheating. The other teams have to be cautious of this and take measures against it. If you think Belichick is the first, then you’re as gullible as the teams getting videotaped. If you’re predictable, then you’re not a very good team. What I question is the League’s officiating competitive fairness (ie Loins/Cowboys game). I just don’t trust them. And the Patriots always seem to be on the beneficiary side, ever since that Raiders game. The Patriots can blame the League for creating that cheating persona. And perhaps the League itself should be considered the true cheaters!

I nominate this poster as the biggest dope of all time. And he/she didn’t even know that Bud Selig is not the Commissioner of the NFL.

Really — what rock did you climb out from under?

  199. The Niners were cheating with the salary cap during their Montana/Young championship years. That’s how they signed key free agents like Deion Sanders.

Why are they never mentioned as having tainted championships?

  200. Ha ha ha.

ESPN is reporting that the NFL is investigating whether the Browns were sending text messages to and from the sidelines during games. This would violate league policy on sideline communication during games. It is a similar infraction committed by 12 NFL teams in 2007 (around Spygate) concerning violations of the timeframe of coach-to-QB communications via headsets. (The 12 teams were not identified but the Patriots were said to not be one of them).

All Belichick did was keep up with a league steeped in a culture of intelligence gathering. The only real crime committed by the Patriots was winning 3 of 4 SBs — otherwise this would not have been an issue. Had the Browns won THIS year’s SB, this texting issue would end up with a -Gate at the end of it — placed there of course by homer fans of rival teams.

The real question here is NOT who was violating one league rule or another — but who was NOT violating rules.

  201. You know what they call NFL coaches that don’t cheat, don’t look for angles and aren’t pushing limits? Unemployed…

Say what you want about the Spygate, they got caught, that’s the only difference between BB & The rest.

Especially Shula, excessive watering of the field so his gimp-kneed QB Marino wouldn’t get sacked 30 times a game. Leader of the rules committee (Hmm conflict of interest?). Johnny U thought Shula was a punk.

  202. Fact – The Patriots were taping Jets defensive signal calling.
Fact – This is against NFL rules.
Fact – The Patriots knew it was against NFL rules.
Fact – They did it because it gave them an advantage.
    …resulting in.
Fact – They cheated to win.

    ————————————————

Fact – An unspecified number of teams violated one league rule or another to gain an advantage. Twelve unnamed teams in 2007 (none of them the Patriots according to league sources) violated coach-to-QB headset communications. The Browns are now being investigating for sideline texting. There have been steroids and cap violations. Player tampering. Signing players just cut by the team you’re about to play. (That one should be illegal).

FACT – Team owners and coaches as well as league officials know this and that is why no one complained when those tapes were destroyed. Any attempt to blow the issue out of proportion would have opened up a league-wide can of worms no one wanted opened.

FACT – Even opponents downplay the advantage gained. The fact is that it is supposed to benefit the offense — and yet Brady struggled through much of the championship years. It’s the defense that won those titles. The fact the Pats have only managed to lose 2 SBs by 3-4 points rather than win 3 by 3 points has more to do with Bill’s trouble finding replacements for the players lost on defense after 2004.

FACT – The Patriots dynasty will continue to be celebrated in the record books, by Patriots fans, and referenced in NFL analysis of the new history being made.

  203. Also don’t forget that Belicheat has Ernie Adams and Shula never had a spy like that during his coaching years.

  204. The Patriots got caught cheating. So the nickname does apply and accurately so.

We don’t even know the true extent of the cheating either; as the videotapes were destroyed. If there was nothing left to hide, why destroy the videotapes?

Cheating also comes in the form of committing penalties during a game. For example, you can’t hold a receiver in the attempt to prevent him from catching a pass. Yet that’s exactly what the Seahawks did many times last year in their run up to the SB.

Cheat Carroll knew the refs wouldn’t call every single pass interference penalty against his defenders, so he instructed them to commit the penalty when necessary.

According to those on other teams, that was almost every single play and was outlined in PFT’s “Gilbride says Seahawks have “perfected the art” of pass interference” story last year.

Therefore Patriots fans don’t have to worry about being alone in this; as the Seahawks cheated all the way to a championship too.

  205. Ha ha, Shula is no better than a dumb internet troll.

He should talk about cheating. He’s an expert. The tampering scandal he was at the center of cost a 1st round pick and from the “15 man huddle” to the ‘mud bowl” this guys reputation for honesty was crap. He’s maybe the last guy who should be talking about Belichick.

  206. Pittsburgh got down 21-3 against the Pats in 2001 because they gave up 2 spcial teams TDs. What signals were they stealing to do that? The Pats probably didn’t belong on the same field as the Rams that yr either, but won the game on defense. Since they were stealing offensive signals to use to their advantage, why did they’re offense only put up about 250 yrds in each game and score 23pts in both games combined. Guess that blows that theory.

  207. Shula spent his life to be he get coach of all time and he’s not and going to have to share with Walsh, knoll, Lombardi, Landry, Johnson, Gibbs, with be lichen being the top dawg…

Sorry for your disappointment and disalusionment

  208. Belichick is a jerk and a very overrated coach. To be called to the carpet by a legend like Shula, has to be a punch to the belly. I am tired of reading all of the folks that condone cheating, lying, covering up crap. My friends & I are brutally honest and don’t always agree on things but we are cut from the same moral fiber and hold each other accountable. I think we need more of that in todays decaying society. If you don’t want to be called a cheat, don’t cheat.

  209. whiteyruss1 – Do you know the story behind Shula’s going to the Dolphins from the Colts?

In regards to respecting the coaching profession; other coaches in the NFL, Belichick has something that Shula has never had – class. Something Belichick learned from his father and also Bill Parcels: never disrespect another coach. Never.

  210. It’s not something we’d expect to hear from Shula? Yes, it is. You must not know much about Shula. He’s not exactly the classiest guy in league history.

  211. This says, Thanks also to this i of Mike Smith’s said accounts which recounts also that he DOES also so with that with him for that this i of his said accounts which recounts also that he DOES also so with that with him now here STILL recounts also that ” ‘ Don Shula calls ‘ Sir ‘ William Belichick OUT as ‘ BeliCHEAT ‘ ‘ ” for himself, for himself too as well, for himself too to boot, for anyone whoever accepts also that this even says also, Thanks also to this i of his said accounts which recounts also that he DOES also so with this with him for that this i of his said accounts which recounts also that he DOES also so with this with him now here STILL recounts also that ” ‘ Don Shula calls ‘ Sir ‘ William Belichick OUT as ‘ BeliCHEAT ‘ ‘ ” him/herself for him/herself, for fans, for readers, for others also and even for us, too, especially for giving us SOMETHING REALLY funnysounding about which to crack ALL the REALLY cheap jokes we want to all night long….

    He’s just jealous… Brady>Marino, BB>Shula

    ——————————————————

LMAO Beli-cheat will never be better than Shula, ever!

  213. whiteruss1 …

In the original article, MDS wrote: “It’s not something we would have expected to hear from Shula, who rarely speaks out or makes waves in retirement.” But Shula has been known to throw tantrums like a spoiled child in retirement when he gets his nose out of joint. And Belichick coming razor close to an undefeated season definitely got Shula’s nose out of joint 😉

  214. Unfortunately classless on the part of Shula, who I’ve generally regarded with respect. Shula himself was suspected of cheating on at least two different occasions including huddling too many players on the field and for the mud bowl. Personally, it wouldn’t surprise me if coaches uses every advantage possible to give their team an edge. I recall most pros acknowledged that includes trying to decipher opposing teams play calls and the pats were simply caught in an activity that many teams have engaged, which doesn’t make it okay, but also doesn’t mean it gave them a win. The Pats have been to the post-season 12 times in the last 15 seasons since Belichick has been at the helm. They have been to 5 Super Bowls winning 3. I think it would be hard to claim that Belichick and team have outsmarted all the refs, the league and the other teams in some cheat for all those 15 seasons. Players do actually have to play the game after all. Following the so-called “spygate”, Pats were probably under more scrutiny than most teams. I think Schula’s sour grapes probably come from the fact that Belichick’s win percentage since joining the Pats is significantly superior to Schula’s at Miami and Pats have been a contender nearly every year. It may also have to do with Miami being in the toilet for some time now.

  215. The Colts are of course grateful for Don Shula giving Belichick and the Patriots a little more bulletin board material – not they needed any.

Shula is obviously feeling threatened by BB.

  216. Hey Pats fans we wouldn’t even be having this stupid debate if it wasn’t for all time pats favorite ref Walt Coleman calling the “tuck rule” aka the suck rule. Still the most egregious error by a ref in the post season. If the fumble stands as called then the pats never have a dynatsy and all you bandwagon pats fans would go on not careing abaout anything but the red sox. Walt Coleman needs to be the next loser to into your team hall of fame, sorry I meant shame.

  217. Don Shula is a bitter old man who has become irrelevant in today’s modern era of football. Get it while you can Don because you will soon be forgotten and Belichick will have outdone you very very soon!
Best record in all of Sports over the last decade…check it! Winners win, losers hate!!!!

  218. I’m neither a Shula or BB fan. When some folks reach 85, there is a tendency for things to be spoken with less filters. I think a younger Shula might have held his tongue about BB. But as bluntly as he spoke, the sad reality is, he was right. BB’s staff got caught cheating and the team paid a big fine. BB defenders should stop trying to dismiss that point. And shooting the messenger for pointing it out lacks class.

  219. I am a Bills fan … yea, I know, I accept your empathy … how many Super Bowls have the Bills lost? 5! … including the next one they play in!

Consequently, I am not particularly fond of the Pats … however, what the Pats (including Belichick, Brady, and many others) have accomplished through the years is simply phenomenal.

As to cheating, it’s a bunch of nonsense, a non-story.

Do you really think the Pats had all of that success due solely to filming other teams? Puh … lease!

Do you really think other teams are not doing everything possible to maximize their chances?

And as for Don Shula, so what, he called him Beli-cheat … big deal.

I often tell people, ‘the only thing good about getting old’ is that you can do and say things that would have gotten you into a fight at 25. But now, people just look at you and think — senile, stupid old man!

We have had this great game of football for over 60 years now and there have been there have been may great quarterbacks; Johnny U, Marino, Elway, Favre, Montana, Aikman, Bradshaw, Staubach, Young, Starr, Manning, yes and Brady. Please then answer the following question:

How can the New England Patriots during Tom Brady’s tenure do something that has never been done before ? Win their division 12 out of 13 years IN A ROW ? FOLKS, its a statistical improbability to do that when no one has ever done it before. Teams have bad years, Even without Brady in 2008, they still won 10 or 11 games, OF COURSE BELICHIK CHEATS ! He will do whatever he can to win.

Ask the Baltimore Ravens if Belichick cheats, Ask JJ Watts if Belechick cheats. Ask the New York Jets if Belichick cheats (Jets playbook turns up in New England facilities). Ask Marshall Faulk if Belichick cheats. Ask Carey Williams of the Eagles if Belichick cheats, etc

Kudos to you Don Shula, a man of character, integrity and honor. You won the right way. You embodied great sportsmanship in your sport for so many years.

  221. Say what you want about Shula but he’s right, the Pats cheated and if it wasn’t illegal they wouldn’t have been penalized. Saying Shula cheated doesn’t change the fact the Pats did too or that they haven’t won a ring since they got caught. Brady is better than Marino, but Belchek hasn’t done a thing without Brady so let’s save the BS about Belichek for when Brady retires and he has to it without the greatest QB ever. I know he’s a good coach but honestly the name of his boat should be Brady cause he’d have 0 rings without him.

  222. It’s shocking to me how naive people are, or maybe it is just convenient to be naive in order to feel better about ones own team’s performance; i.e. my team doesn’t win because it doesn’t cheat. It’s not entirely clear why it’s even considered cheating to record a play call that is made out in public in front of everyone. A person in the stands can see the calls and could be recording on their electronic devices. Nevertheless, the league decided to make a clear policy on the matter in a 2006 memo and the Pats were caught violating that policy in early 2007 for which they were fined and lost a key pick. They are guilty of that, there is no debate. But, whoop de do. Even the Jets coach who reported it indicated he didn’t intend to make a big deal about it but that he didn’t want the Pats using Jet’s stadium to get an advantage and he had ability to go into stadium to shut it down. Teams and players have been fined for violating many a policy and they are hardly called cheats or have their victories called into question. And the league did not in fact call any Pats victories into question, but somehow supposedly smarter people in this column are doing so. If you ask any coach, probably Shula included (if he was honest), on whether they taped or attempted to record opposing teams play calling, or had violated some other rule (intentionally or inadvertently) in giving their players every possible advantage, they would say yes. Well, at least two famous coaches, Bill Cowher and Jimmy Johnson were honest to admit that it was common for teams to record opposing team play calls. So, were the Pats simply the only one to get caught and made an example of? We will probably never know, but we do know that they weren’t the only ones who did so when other coaches and commentators have noted it to be common. But, even if you don’t agree with any of this, what’s with the goofball comments from people of saying what have they done since that infraction in early 2007 (or prior)? First, they did nothing wrong prior to 2006 because the rule wasn’t issued until then. Second, they have made it to the playoffs 12 out of 15 seasons since BB took the helm. Third, they are 7 out of 8 since 2007. Not to mention that the Pats probably have the highest, or near highest, winning percentage of any team in the NFL since 2007. Oh and two additional SB appearances. You’d have to be a total moron not to recognize the team’s continued success year-after-year with a wide variety of different players including losing some real stars, players and coaches, that were paid very well to go elsewhere. The constants: BB and Brady.

  223. Shula could not win a SB with Dan Marino. Give Belichick Dan Marino and he wins multiple superbowls. Shula hung around a long time, but Belichick is clearly the better coach.

    ======================================

what do all these people have in common?

oh yeah, they lost to the Patriots

    9 AFC Championships
    5 super bowl appearances

they cheated, they knew the plays…BWAAAAHHHHH

your team knows the offensive play when they leave the huddle, how come they ever drop a ball, how come they don’t run for a first down on every play?

because the game is a game that is in motion, players have to execute, they have to have a brain.

    or they can just cry

  225. Once again the Haters have shown that they are the cheaters. They are cheaters because they live in willful ignorance of the facts surrounding Spygate.

They refuse to understand that the taping of signals has long been a part of the game. They don’t seem to understand that the real rule underlying where and where not taping can be done is about teams being not allowed to use the videos DURING THE GAME THEY WERE SHOT IN. Which is 1) basically impossible because it takes a considerate amount of time to analyze and 2) something no team has ever been accused of INCLUDING THE PATRIOTS.

Spygaters refuse to acknowledge the clear and simple fact that the memo issued by the NFL about not shooting from sidelines was created in 2006. Which means there is nothing by which anyone can discredit the Patriots Super Bowl wins. And the Patriots were accused of doing it in the first half of the first game of the season in which the new rule was administered and since then has never been accused of the same infraction. Which means the Patriots actually got better when their sidelines were empty of cameras.

The Spygaters also refuse to acknowledge the fact that the Patriots never videotaped the Rams walk-through before the Super Bowl. Instead, they prefer to believe the lie that Matt Walsh told the Boston Herald. A lie that was outed by other members of the Patriots video crew. A lie that Matt Walsh later confessed to making. A lie that forced the Boston Herald to retract the story and issue apologies to the NFL, the Patriots and Bill Belichick.

Spygaters need to live in the falsehood created by a disgruntled employee. They love the lie. They regard the lie as truth because it allows them to exist in a world where the Patriots taped every single practice of their opponents.

Spygaters are truthers who will not be dissuaded by facts or evidence. They need to live the lie because their resentment of the Patriots is that strong. I will acknowledge that it is human nature to get tired and/or resentful of winners that keep winning. It is human nature to want to see the constant winner upset … or see them stripped of their authenticity due to some scandal where it is revealed that all this winning was not due to superior skills and intellect. However, it must be stated that this is NOT a commendable human behavior. It is petty and small. It reveals a deep insecurity when someone refuses to acknowledge someone else’s skills, determination and hard work.

I think we can all be accused of demonstrating this behavior at times in our lives. It can be very easy to resent people we do not think are legitimate winners. Modern media shoves winners down our throats constantly. But when rabid resentment builds against those who have legitimate skills and work harder than others to achieve success, this human behavior becomes classless, mean and ugly.

So that is your decision Spygaters. Either learn and acknowledge the real truth behind Spygate … or continue to cheat. Continue to believe something that is not true. Continue to believe the Patriots were accused of something they were never accused of (using tape of signals in the game they were shot). Continue to believe that Matt Walsh’s lie is not a lie. Continue to believe something even Matt Walsh did not lie about … believe without a shred of evidence that the Patriots have had a long standing practice of filming opponent’s practices.

It’s up to you Mr. and Mrs. Spygater. Cheat. Refuse to acknowledge the skills of Belichick and Brady. Refuse to acknowledge all their hard work and ingenious game planning. Cheat. Just keep pretending that (despite the facts) the Patriots aren’t very good and the only way they could possibly be so successful is from cheating.

  226. 1 perfect season or winning your division for the last 15 years along with a few Afc’s and a few superbowls. There really isn’t a comparison between the two.

I also find it so funny that non patriot fans think that their teams have never done spying. You can continue to feed the illusion but rest assured that the reality is that they do. But I guess we can’t be the best at everything.

I absolutely love hearing about how the Patriots are this or that. It just shows that you know who the better player’s, team and the coach who is better than anyone else by a lot. (Not to mention probably the 1st to actually read the rule book. Now there’s a novel concept. ) because nobody puts a target on second place
    .
Unfortunately for the non NE fan you have to watch the best run of a team ever make history. And until Bill retires this is your future.

You ever wondered how a team can loose so many key players and still mange to win the afc. That is not luck that is Bill and something that is far harder than a perfect season

Being stuck in the “sucks right now ” is far worse than ” might suck in the future”. I know that you all realize this fact because why else would you be bitching?

Oh in closing, as I am sure many are debating the deflated balls. You have to be a complete moron to not realize that if you inflate a ball in say a room at 70 F and then take same balls outside into 30 degree air that the psi will in fact be lower. But because another disgruntled fan was upset that they lost and wanted to get a shoot in retaliation is pathetic and is the definition of asinine. They started off well but as soon as the freezing rain sapped the warmth out of them where they could only think about one thing. Staying warm had nothing to do with the outcome. Welcome to NE where football is played outside regardless of the weather.

  227. “Coach” Shula is the architect of the two biggest choke jobs in NFL chapionship history: The Browns dismantling of the Colts in 1965 and, of course, Super Bowl III.

He also conveniently omits any discussion ever of his poor post-season record or his own “cheating.” In direct violtion of NFL rules, he ordered the tarp left off the field before the AFC title games against the Jets and of having too many players in the huddle during games.
