Don Shula calls Bill Belichick “Beli-cheat”

Former Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula presents the inaugural Don Shula NFL Coach of the Year award in Dallas Reuters

Since the 2007 Spygate controversy, Patriots coach Bill Belichick has been referred to as “Beli-cheat” a number of times, but usually by fans of rival teams. Not by Hall of Fame coaches.

But that’s the name Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history, uses to refer to Belichick.

Dave Hyde of the Sun-Sentinel writes in a profile of Shula at the age of 85 that when the subject of Belichick came up, that unflattering nickname was Shula’s response.

“Beli-cheat?” Shula says.

Shula’s 1972 Dolphins have the only perfect season in NFL history. Belichick’s 2007 Patriots, who went 16-0 in the regular season but lost in the Super Bowl, were the team that came the closest to joining the ’72 Dolphins with a perfect season. And Shula apparently thinks that Belichick, whose team got caught that year taping opposing coaching signals, achieved his success using something less than sportsmanlike means.

It’s not something we would have expected to hear from Shula, who rarely speaks out or makes waves in retirement. Shula must not have warm feelings toward Belichick. Or Beli-cheat.

I’ll get the salt Coach Shula. Belichick has done some great things in the salary cap era.

  6. heelturn31 says: Jan 8, 2015 12:13 PM

Screw that dinosaur and his stupid ’72 Dolphins that went undefeated in Bedrock with like 8 teams.

  7. chiadam says: Jan 8, 2015 12:14 PM

The 72 Dolphins are the most annoying anything in the history of everything.

  8. vtopa says: Jan 8, 2015 12:15 PM

Sounds like someone is worried about the one coach currently in the league who can overshadow his legacy. Kinda petty there Don. Maybe you should stick to opening more overpriced steak restaurants.

The passage of time doesn’t change facts, Pats fans.

  10. cajunaise says: Jan 8, 2015 12:17 PM

What does this mean? Simple: from now on, when someone says, “Beli-cheat”, and someone else says, “pfft, whatever”, the response is, “Don Shula calls him `Beli-cheat’, too.” And that will irk Pats fans, despite their claims to the contrary. Thank you for this gift, sir!

  13. tauntonsyndicate says: Jan 8, 2015 12:18 PM

I’ve been turned off by the ’72 Dolphins ever since it came out that they get together and celebrate every year when the last undefeated team loses their first game of the season. Most professionals say nice things about the individuals that break their records and offer congratulations on a job well done. Its called showing class. After all, who else would know how difficult it is to reach that pinnacle of success. Sometimes its just better to take the high road.

  14. celticsforever says: Jan 8, 2015 12:18 PM

This man is irrelevant. Coaching in a non-salary cap era with one of the greatest QB’s ever (Marino) and he didn’t win squat for the last 15 years of his career.

  18. shortmandan says: Jan 8, 2015 12:19 PM

When the greratest teams of all time are discussed, the ’72 Dolphins are never in the conversation. The 60’s Packers, 70’s Steelers, 80’s 49ers, and even the 90’s Cowboys would’ve slapped Shula’s teams around. That’s why Don is a bitter old man.

  19. brianc34 says: Jan 8, 2015 12:19 PM

Truth hurts, huh? Pats fans are the worst. They act like they never got caught cheating.

  20. jeremycrowhurst says: Jan 8, 2015 12:20 PM

  29. patriotsdefense says: Jan 8, 2015 12:23 PM

Dona Shula spent years with a draconian and Dolphins centered influence of the Competition Committee. That is oodles worse.

And again, filming coaching signals is not illegal. Stealing signals is not illegal. Nor were those rules in place during the title runs. Don Shula accomplished nothing after 1972. He stopped being relevant during the Nixon administration.

In growing up I’ve kearned that it is extremely rare for someone, anyone who is successful not to cheat in some form or another, there are many who are simply never caught-I wonder if coach Shula might be one of the many? (And I’m a Baltimore Colts fanatic from way back-Unitas, Berry, Mackey, Orr(sville), Lenny Moore, Big Daddy Lipscomb, Tom Matte etc, etc, etc)

  34. chuckshontaspads says: Jan 8, 2015 12:24 PM

  35. kissmysandwich says: Jan 8, 2015 12:24 PM

I think two things are clear. Belichick will bend the rules as far as possible to win, and no one cares about Schula in 2015. Whether or not Bill is a “cheater” is for talk radio.

  54. johnlink00 says: Jan 8, 2015 12:30 PM

True. Passage of time doesn’t change that the Patriots were caught doing what the rest of the league was doing (and that Jimmy Johnson admitted on a Fox broadcast that the Cowboys did in the 90s). The Patriots filmed signals from the wrong place in the stadium. That was their crime. Not that they filmed the signals, but that they did it from the wrong spot.

  55. kd75 says: Jan 8, 2015 12:30 PM

  57. justanacehole says: Jan 8, 2015 12:31 PM

After the 1969 season, Joe Robbie, owner of the Miami Dolphins, signed Shula to a contract to become Miami’s second head coach. As a result of Shula’s signing the team was charged with tampering by the NFL, which forced the Dolphins to give their first round pick to the Colts.

Sometimes, you have to bend the rules to win.

  64. herkiethehawk says: Jan 8, 2015 12:32 PM

Shula is just jealous because even with his undefeated season, coaching nobility consists of Lombardi, Landry, Knox, Parcells, and now Belichick

nobody thinks of Shula in those terms. He is an afterthought, and he knows it.

Less teams. No salary cap. No free agency. And one Super Bowl to show for it. Belichick will take his five rings, and not even one is tainted since the banning of filming of practices from the stands only became a rule in 2006, after his wins.

    I’ll take Belichick.

  75. lanman11 says: Jan 8, 2015 12:36 PM

This has a hollow and petty ring coming from the man that ordered the tarps off the field during a monsoon a couple days before the AFC Championship game in the early 80’s in order to slow down the Jets offense and the Sack Exchange. It worked. Miami squeaked out a win in a virtual mud bath. Of course, this was “back in the day” when we dis not have instant 24/7 news cycles starved for content, and “gamesmanship” was approved with a wink and a nod. This guy also got on the rules committee and changed various rules to suit his offense and Dan Marino. Nothing this guy says, or anything any of the highly overrated 72 Dolphins say (like Mercury Morris) should be taken seriously. I don’t believe any team they beat in 72 had a record above. 500 and that may also include the Super Bowl Redskins who may have been above .500 after the playoffs, barely. And they barely beat them. I never liked Shula because he was always using his position to manipulate the system looking for an edge. I think this is a classic case of the pot and the kettle.

  76. whyamiacowboysfanagain says: Jan 8, 2015 12:37 PM

Did Belichick knowingly cheat or not? Did other teams of his era cheat? Did Shula’s Baltimore Colts or Miami Dolphins employ questionable tactics to gain an advantage? Who knows. But a Hall of Fame coach like Shula saying this this way seems kinda petty (even if it is true)…..

  77. jpaq68 says: Jan 8, 2015 12:37 PM

Everyone and every franchise wants to emulate the Seahawk Way

  81. rideforjesus says: Jan 8, 2015 12:39 PM

Let me see if I get this straight Coach Don. The cameras were in the wrong locations in game one. Jets coach Eric Mangini tells this to the referees. Then the referees remove the cameras so they cannot be used in the second half of the first game of the season.

Then they win 18 straight games. Now how did they do that with out cameras? Must have found another way to cheat?
Come on Don…the whole spygate thing was a joke… driven hard by the media.

  82. joestemme says: Jan 8, 2015 12:40 PM

I respect Shula’s legacy as much as the next NFL fan, but, here’s a fact that even his most ardent admirers might not know:

Shula coached up until 1995. In what year did he coach his last ROAD Playoff win? (Super Bowls don’t count, because they are neutral turf)

The answer? 1972. After that season, Shula never won a single road playoff game.

  83. vancouversportsbro says: Jan 8, 2015 12:42 PM

My respect for Shula just went through the roof. About time a respected coach in the game laid into Belicheck. What do Pats fans have to say now? That other fans are jealous?

He was still the coach of the Baltimore Colts at the end of the 1969 season, when then-Miami owner Joe Robbie approached him and signed Shula to a contract. The NFL charged the Dolphins with tampering and awarded their first-round pick to the Colts.

  87. Iknowitall says: Jan 8, 2015 12:43 PM

  88. EJ says: Jan 8, 2015 12:43 PM

    Fact- Bill Belichick cheated.
Whether or not he did it once or hundreds of times, he still ultimately cheated.
The NFL’s record books should have an *asterisk* next to any record made by Coach Belichick or any player from the Patriots team he coached, from the time he was hired in New England to the date the cheating was found to be happening. This includes the Superbowl and Playoffs too!
He is a disgrace to players and coaches that put in the time and follow the rules of the game!! SMH

  91. jdogg207 says: Jan 8, 2015 12:44 PM

Don Shula is the best. He had a long and great career and earned the right to say whatever the hell he pleases. Someone once found a playbook for the Raiders who also were once a great organization that won consistently and he refused to use it to his advantage. That’s why what guys like Belichick do bothers him. He has more stand up character in his pinky than most coaches and players.

And why the hate for the ’72 team??? Because they meet every year and celebrate their accomplishment? You do something great in sports that absolutely no one else in almost 100 years has been able to accomplish and tell me you won’t be proud of it. They have every right to be proud of it and should be. It’s not that they’re happy the current teams lost, it’s a point of pride that no one else has been able to accomplish it.

Shula diminishes himself with this type of thing. Belichick is an easy target for the angry, embittered, envious, and jealous. I guess Shula is one of them now. Sad.

I’m sure he’s very envious of being so far removed from the limelight while Belichick is going to be in the big show again this year. Every year Belichick and the Pats are in the post-season. That in and of itself is an accomplishment that ANY team ANYWHERE would take over their own. Legendary – hence the anger and vitriol directed as it is.

Another great year for the Pats – and it’s not over yet folks. Watch and enjoy!

Go open another lousy steakhouse Don.

Best game day coach in NFL history, and I love the man, but this was a bush league comment from a guy who was famous for seeking any edge he could get, including keeping the tarp off the field to let it get muddy. I’ll cut him some slack in his old age, but Bill is the closest thing to Shula I’ve ever seen. Familiarity breeds contempt?

Yet, Shula has nothing but praise for Philbin, who is a mediocrity.

    ==========================

I disagree, every year spygate is like a fish story for all the Patriots hating trolls. In ten years spygate is going to be about how the Patriots filmed signals, practices, walk throughs, had microphones in all of the opposing teams locker rooms, had all the phones tapped of the other 31 teams, covered up Bengazi and the IRS scandal, circumvented the salary cap, paid off refs… You get the point.

I wont argue that it wasnt a shady practice, but it also wasnt against the rules until 2007. So all of the trophies that everyone likes to say have an asterisk, really dont, because they didnt violate any rules or anything until 3 years after their 3rd Lombardi. Just saying

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Shula’s hands aren’t clean either. How about the time he soaked the field before a playoff game against the Jets so his ground game could have the advantage over the Jets’ passing game?

  127. razzledazzle427 says: Jan 8, 2015 1:05 PM

My two cents on this matter.

    1) Whose the ONLY coach in NFL history to lose going 18-1 in their season? Only two other teams have done that…84 49ers and the 85 Bears, both of which won THEIR super bowls in blowout fashions. Yep that would be the “brilliant” BB, whose playoff record as a HC after spygate is a “SPARKING” 9-8.

    2) 17-0 is still 17-0, doesn’t matter if you play all the crap teams that year. They beat TWO teams in those playoffs who were 10-4 and 11-3 respectively. One of those teams started a dynasty in two years (Pittsburgh). Also they beat a 11-3 Redskins team who had a better point differential than them all season.

Finally, if they were so vastly overrated…tell me why did they win again the NEXT season? I’m not even an AFC fan (49ers) but as TUNA said once…YOU ARE WHAT YOUR RECORD SAYS YOU ARE! Shula won a SB with a backup QB, BB couldn’t even get to the playoffs with a backup QB in 2008.

    Shula > BB all day!

THIS IS FLAT OUT WRONG. JUST MAKE UP WHATEVER YOU WANT TO FEEL BETTER ABOUT BEING CAUGHT CHEATING. see the actual statement from the league below.

‘That was re-emphasized in a memo sent Sept. 6 to NFL head coaches and general managers. In it, Ray Anderson, the league’s executive vice president of football operations, wrote:”Videotaping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent’s offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches’ booth, in the locker room or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game.’

  143. valentino8100 says: Jan 8, 2015 1:12 PM

Tinge of jealousy there Don? I think that the old man knows that Belichick is hands-down the best X’s and O’s man in the history of the game, and that when it’s all said and done, will have completely eclipsed Shula’s accomplishments, and will have done so in the era of parity and free agency.

  144. lanman11 says: Jan 8, 2015 1:12 PM

If you read the article on Shula, you will see him and the rest of his crowd dressed in those aqua blue and orange outfits celebrating the 72 team more so than his birthday. These guys hold onto that for dear life itself. You can also hear how egotistical he is in his comments. Shula has never really had much class. He didn’t have to, because he won a lot. It’s those times when he lost, or when he was afraid he might lose something, like a big game, or a record, or notoriety, that his character was revealed.

When he ordered the tarps off the field, in the rain, in Miami, before the AFC Championship game with the Jets, he secured a huge advantage, and that loss for the Jets led to the firing of Walt Michaels, who was probably the best coach the Jets had in the last century with the exception of Weeb Ewbank. If I were Shula, I wouldn’t be so proud of having a hand in the firing of one of my peers through unsportsmanlike acts.SHULA CHEATED, plain and simple.

Belichik wasn’t fined for his looks, they didn’t just voluntarily surrender a first round pick. They crossed lines and left a mark on the league’s integrity. Good for Shula not going along with the league’s damage control policy.

Spygate is a shibboleth that allows people to recognize bitter ignorance amongst their fellow football fans. Goodell handed down the largest fine in NFL history because of the firestorm that was created by the idiots at ESPN that launched a media circus in response to the allegations. Time and again, Goodell has shown himself to be a reactionary bully, handing down punishments based on public perception rather than any sense of justice, proportion or precedent.

Remember, when the Denver Broncos under Mike Shanahan skirted the salary cap so that they could retain both John Elway and Terrell Davis, Commissioner Tagliabue only handed down a penalty of $968,000 and a 3rd round draft pick. And that was in response to a much more direct from of ‘cheating’ that resulted in the Broncos winning two Super Bowls.

Multiple championship winning coaches have come forward to say that they also filmed signals but saw minimal benefit to the practice, including Jimmy Johnson and Bill Cowher. Former Jets coach Herm Edwards was shown on one of the segments released to the public waving at the cameraman, so it’s not like this was some big secret. Even Eric Mangini later lamented the firestorm that his complaint initiated and expressed regret for the debacle that followed.

In order to understand why Spygate is much ado about nothing, you have to understand what exactly it entailed. Defensive signals are deliberately hard to decipher since they take place in plain view of everyone in the stadium. As such, in addition to changing signals frequently, there would often be three people on the sideline issuing the signals with two of them being decoys and only one of them issuing the actual play call. The tape that was being recorded could not have been used during the games themselves, there simply is not enough time to analyze the video and turn it into useful information that could be relayed to the offense. The tapes were to help Belichick analyze the play calling tendencies of opposing coaches.

Football is a game of situations. Belichick wanted to answer the question: given a particular score, with so much time remaining, at this down and distance, with this offensive formation on the field, what kind of defense does this coach call for from the sidelines? Filming the defensive signals was the only way to answer this question, because the players on the field will often audible out of the defense that was called in reaction to the offense or will simply run the wrong defensive scheme.

It was essentially an attempt to reverse engineer the play-calling sheets that most coaches have close to hand during a game. It didn’t work on the on the offensive side of the ball because of the in-helmet communication system (which has since been added to the defensive side, negating the practice of filming signals altogether). It allowed Belichick to build a game plan hand tailored to match the tendencies of his opponent. This is why in many of the games early in his career as the Patriots coach there was an appearance of the Patriots playing chess while their opponents played checkers. It changed the way the game itself was played.

    FiveChampionships…

Thanks for proving my point. That memo went out in 2006. Well after the Patriots had won their Championships. The league decided it wanted to end the practice that all teams were engaged in when they released that memo. Belichick was reading from the rule book which stated “Any use by any club at any time, from the start to the finish of any game in which such club is a participant, of any communications or information-gathering equipment, other than Polaroid-type cameras or field telephones, shall be prohibited, including without limitation videotape machines, telephone tapping, or bugging devices, or any other form of electronic devices that might aid a team during the playing of a game.”
He misinterpreted that rule to mean the filming couldn’t be used during the playing of the game in which the filming was being done. The league wanted to clarify the rule, so they sent out the memo. This all happened after the Patriots won their Championships.

Shula’s 70s teams were ravaged by the World Football League or they might have won more.

Regarding, Spygate, I was at the game the rookie Big Ben smoked the Pats and stopped their long winning streak at Heinz Field. That’s the game the Pats filmed the Steelers coaches signals from the opposite sideline.

When the Pats returned and beat the Steelers at Heinz for the AFC title, Hines Ward said immediately after the game………”it’s like they knew every play we’d call.”

    Because they did.

He knows as well as every other football follower that Belichick was doing what every other coach was doing at that time … including what Shula did during his time; he tried to gain competitive advantage over other teams. Shula is just inept and always was. The fact he was never able to win a Super Bowl with Marino in his stable is proof enough of that coaching failure … even while he was throwing to Duper and Clayton. How are those sour grapes, Shula? Weeb Ewbank> Don Shula

    1969 Super Bowl III

    NY Jets 16
Baltimore Colts 7 (Coached by Don Shula, and favored by 17.5 points!)

The loss by Shula resulted in the destruction of the NFL as we knew it, and the forming of the new NFL which included all of the AFL teams that the NFL said they would never accept. Basically, Shula lost the biggest game in NFL History to Weeb Ewbank and the NY Jets, when public opinion was nearly unanimous that Shula and the Colts would humiliate the Jets. Why don’t we talk about THAT monumental failure Don?

To me spygate is much worse than I had originally thought….after having all of my concerns about Goodell confirmed after the Rice and Peterson situations I have no doubt the reason all of the evidence was destroyed was if it was known what the Pats were really doing it would call into question all of his SB wins with the team, he couldn’t let that happen and tarnish the league. Goodell is a lying rat and no way can you believe anything he says unless there is video proof of it…..

I do love the playoff’s but all this talk of the 72 flippers gets old

That was then this is now and if not for Eli and company the flippers would not even get a sniff

Every team cheats to some extent holding during a play is cheating and if you don’t get called then you got away with cheating.

Hitting a WR out of bounds is cheating if the flag is not thrown

Heck if not for a cheater holding a Lions player the cowboys would be home this weekend

Point being everyone tries to cheat every week

  188. miamatt says: Jan 8, 2015 1:36 PM

There truly is nothing more Don Shula could do to endear himself to the fans of South Florida.

And if anybody can sit on a high horse about character, it’s Shula. There is an infamous story about a Dolphins player (maybe it was an assistant coach) who found a copy of the opposing team’s game plan the day before the game. When it was presented to Shula, he tore it up and threw it away. It may sound quaint, but it beats the hell out of the slimy “everybody else does it, we just caught caught” garbage that comes from Patsy nation.

Of course, the Dolphins won anyway.

  190. lanman11 says: Jan 8, 2015 1:38 PM

I’m glad we had the time to re-visit all these truths about Shula and his so called legacy.

Slipped out of Baltimore in the middle of the night abandoning his employers in order to sign a lucrative deal with the Dolphins resulting in the loss of the Dolphins 1st round draft pick for tampering.

Removed the tarps from the field when it was raining in Miami, if he felt the opponent had a speed or strength advantage.

Had rules changed to suit his offense and Dan Marino (17 seasons with one of the great QB’s in Marino, and he has just one measly title to show for it?)

    Bitter and classless old man.

Thanks for taking us on a “Senti-mental Journey” Don! ROFLMAO!!!

But I am surprised that Shula said what he did – if anyone were to check his coaching record with and without Bill Arnsparger as his DC – they would be very surprised at his terrible W/L record. Winningest coach ever? Not without the underrated and under appreciated Arnsparger.

BECAUSE HE CHEATED! THAT’S WHY! And mostly because he had the greatest QB in the Super Bowl era, Tom Brady? What would this cheater have accomplished without Brady (and cheating)? NOT A DAMNED THING! As a Miami Dolphin fan I absolutely hate the Patriots football team. That doesn’t mean I pretend that Tom Brady isn’t one of the greatest QB’s in NFL history. I am completely honest when I say Bill Belichick is one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. So what’s with all the Patriot fans coming on here and bashing a hall of fame coach for? He never accomplished anything after the 72 perfect season? Are you kidding me? Dan Marino is over rated? What?!?!

From the 1972 perfect season up till he retired Don Shula won 12 division titles, 4 conference championships, 4 super bowl appearances and 2 super bowls.

How the hell can any of you say Don Shula is irrelevant? Theres a reason why he’s in the hall of fame. Just like theres a reason why Bill Belichick is going to be in the hall of fame.

The fact still remains that as great as Bill is, the entire football world outside of Patriots fans question his superbowls because he got caught cheating. It doesn’t matter if it was “technically” legal. If you film your opponent in a malicious and secretive way to gain an advantage, it’s cheating. The sad part is, they probably would have won at least 1 or 2 of those super bowls anyway without cheating which is why it doesn’t bother me. Tom Brady is that good.

“We didn’t lose the game because of any ‘Spygate,’ because of them having any additional things,” Cowher told 93.7 The Fan on Wednesday. “[If] they’re guilty of anything they’re guilty of arrogance because they were told not to do something but it was something everybody does. They got caught doing it with a camera.” Bill Cowher

Also if you want to get technical: This is the same coach who also drafted Chad Jackson, Ron Brace, Mayweather, Chung, Butler, Cunningham, and so on. Belichick did not misinterpret the NFL rulebook – on the contrary, as The Truth About Spygate shows, Belichick read it properly – it was Roger Goodell who misinterpreted it – or more accurately showed complete ignorance of it. Goodell acted against Belichick with complete lack of understanding of what the rulebook actually said – shown when Ray Anderson sent out two memos that falsified what the rules about sideline videotaping actually say, then exacerbated when Goodell was shown up by Belichick and had to cherry pick Article IX and the Miscellaneous Rules to justify slamming Belichick – if he didn’t cherry pick, he would have been forced to admit Belichick had read the rules properly.

So if Tyree doesn’t hang on, or Welker catches a ball that hits both palms, all of this is moot? Fact is, it’s hard to win the Super Bowl. It’s why 26 teams have zero rings since spygate. Don’t look now haters, but the Pats have a legitimate defense again. If Shula and his ’72 Dolphins so great why are Chuck Knolls Steelers considered to be the best team of the 1970’s and what was the Steelers record
    ’74: 10-3-1
    ’75: 10-2
    ’78:14-2
    ’79:12-4

    1972 Dolphins 17-0

However which team is considered the team of the 1970’s? THE STEELERS. When people think football of the ’70s they think Steelers. When people think football in the 2000’s they think Patriots. As for all the spy gate talk its the past. An if your agreeing with Don his perfect season is also in the past. SoDon just got watch Matlock and take a nap.

I think the great Don spoke the truth. As they say it takes a Great one to spot another cheater. He had the two greatest QB in history, he only won TWO SB all with Bob, not Dan who cared only for Stats. As much as I hate the Cowboys, I respect Tom Landry more then this smelly Fish. If he was such a great coach, why wasn’t his son a great coach at all? Buddy Ryan’s sons Rex and Rob accomplish more.

No one will read this comment since it’s the millionth of the article, but this is why baseball’s HOF is more prestigious. Players like Mcgwire, Sosa, and Bonds are not in the HOF for cheating. Belichick will be a first ballot HOF because the NFL doesn’t care about cheating.

  260. harrisonhits2 says: Jan 8, 2015 2:45 PM

    “fact is Shula never cheated”

Yes he did actually. He cheated when he allowed the Fins to tamper with him and take him away from Baltimore, for which Baltimore was awarded the Fins 1st round draft pick the following year.

  261. bushwoodcc says: Jan 8, 2015 2:46 PM

Shula was the lone coaching member of the rules committee for years and manipulated rule to his advantage, especially PI rules after he got Marino, Clayton and Duper.

And the reality is Shula is still butt hurt over Mark Henderson riding the snowplow out to clear a spot for John Smith.

  262. afwhigs says: Jan 8, 2015 2:48 PM

The whole spygate and “Belicheat” thing is so tired. Other teams have been caught and cited for the exact same thing. If anyone thinks the Pats really achieved what they have in the last 10+ years through “cheating” they’re deluded.

And the remaining 72 Dolphins cracking open champagne whenever an undefeated team loses is a sad gesture, and rooting for and celebrating the downfall of others just to desperately cling to some hint of past glory is really pathetic, and bad karma.

Oh, and the 2007 Pats won more games in that season than the Dolphins did in ’72.

  263. gridgod says: Jan 8, 2015 2:48 PM

  264. 2ruefan says: Jan 8, 2015 2:49 PM

I always admired Shula and his career. But I have to say that his using that phrase come across as classless and immature.

Is he jealous? I mean… Shula had arguably one of the best QBs of all time.. and did not win ONE Superbowl with him. In fact.. only even GOT there once with Marino.

    Maybe senility has set in.

  265. tedmurph says: Jan 8, 2015 2:50 PM

Even if Shula is bitter and jealous enough to believe a minor rules infraction blown way out proportion helped the Pats win SBowls, he still shows no class. As an esteemed HOF coach speaking about another, he really dropped his pants on this one. He reduced himself to the level of childish blog posters. Bush league.

  266. mfinsrule says: Jan 8, 2015 2:50 PM

What a senile, pathetic old man Don Shula is. Apparently he is still angry about the snowplow game. Let me enlighten Mr. Shula. I know at his age, he is probably losing his memory.

The Patriots went 17-0 AFTER the bogus Spygate non-scandal. The Patriots would have won the Super Bowl if not for a lucky, fluke catch by David Tyree. I suppose if the Pats were videotaping, David Tyree would not have made that catch.

Seriously, Don Shula just can’t take the fact that the Patriots have become the masters of the AFC East and the Dolphins have become a joke.

And Shula, I hate to break it to you, but EVERY team was ‘cheating’ and ‘videotaping’. It was LEGAL. Goodell sent that memo about not to videotape to EVERY team in the NFL, not just the Pats, because EVERY team was doing the same thing as the Patriots.

I’d like Goodell to give the Patriots back the draft pick he stole because this will go down as the most bogus sports non-scandal in history. Don Shula can go shove it. The Pats own his team. Deal with it.

One thing in looking up the stats that really caught my attention is that in the 11 playoff years, Belichick’s Pats played in the AFC Championship game 8 times, and with a win Saturday it could be 9 of 12. That’s amazing.

As for the guy who says what have they done in the 8 seasons since Spygate. Here are the stats:
88-24 (79%), 7 Division Championships, played in 4 AFC Championship games (with a win Saturday it would be 5). played in 2 Super Bowl games. No other team is consistently as good, period. The video taping had no effect. If anything, they have been better since Spy Gate 79% wins vs 67% .

Can any of you explain, while quoting the rules regarding video taping games how they cheated…you can’t because, they didn’t. Their mistake was continuing to do it after Ray Anderson clarified a sentence in the rules in 2006 and he sent out a memo to all teams, meaning ALL team videotaped during games…suck it up buttercup.

    is tampering cheating?

After the 1969 season, Joe Robbie, owner of the Miami Dolphins, signed Shula to a contract to become Miami’s second head coach. As a result of Shula’s signing the team was charged with tampering by the NFL, which forced the Dolphins to give their first round pick to the Colts.[42] The decision was controversial because Shula and Robbie’s negotiations and signing were conducted before and after the official NFL/AFL merger, respectively. Had the negotiations been concluded before the merger, while the NFL and AFL were rivals, the NFL’s anti-tampering rules could not have been applied.

    ————————
    Sure he never says anything:

Shula told ESPN’s “Mike and Mike in the Morning” on Thursday that if the Patriots finish with a perfect record to match that of his 1972 Dolphins, then there “shouldn’t be any attachment to it,” referring to a possible asterisk next to New England’s name in the record books.

“If they run the table, and they win all the games, then they are doing it within the rules of the National Football League,” Shula said. “And there shouldn’t be any asterisk to it. That would be the accomplishment that they made. It would be the best in all of sports.”

Shula also said if New England can finish the season with an unblemished record, the Patriots “will deserve to be called the best team.”

He’s just angry because the Patriots went 18-0, before they lost it, which is better then they did. He should relax. 72 was still the only undefeated team.

If the Pats are beating YOUR team by using tapes from years ago, most likely with a different QB, Off Coordinator, HC, etc. Than your team, or any team deserves to lose.

You do see coaches cover their mouth when giving plays right? Baseball pitchers cover their face with their glove. Catchers use their legs to block signs to the pitcher.

Just because they have not won a super bowl since they were caught taping signals has nothing to do with their lack of success. The Patriots and Belichick have been winning every year since 2001. The Patriots have finished in first or second place in their division every year since 2001. Onto Baltimore putz (i.e., Shula). Belichick = Best pro football coach ever.

    *************************

By the way, some people feel Shula threw that game because he knew the result would be a league merger, and he had a huge contract waiting for him in Miami if it happened.

It really is quite simple. Those who understand the specifics of what happened during so-called “spy gate” know there was no cheating taking place, but the Patriots violated a directive fro the league office not to tape defensive signals (which was/is common practice among all teams). They were fined for doing it after the directive.

Poor Don is having some senior moments apparently. As far as others who holler “cheater” ……well, it takes all kinds and some folks just aren’t all that bright.

  348. bencoates57 says: Jan 9, 2015 9:12 AM

Even without a perfect 19-0, the Patriots 2007 season exposed and tarnished the reputation of the 72 Fins. Every journalist began analyzing the Fins sked for the first time.

What? Only a 14 game regular season? A few have taken a 13-0 or 14-0 record into a 16 game season only to lose in the final 2-3 weeks.

What? The Fins played only 2 teams during the regular season that would finish with a winning record and both at 8-6?

What? The Pats in recording their 18th victory to no defeats went where no Fins team ever went? And to get there they beat a 5-0 Dallas team IN DALLAS. A 7-0 Colts team, IN INDIANAPOLIS. A playoff bound Redskins team 52-7. A playoff bound Steeler team by 3 TDs (despite a guarantee of victory by a Steelers player). And they beat the eventual SB champion Giants in the final game of the regular season (when the Giants were starting to heat up) IN NEW YORK. They beat San Diego TWICE, the second time while San Diego was on an 8-0 run.

What? All this winning occurred AFTER the videotaping was revealed and stopped?

No wonder Don Shula is mad.

  349. bencoates57 says: Jan 9, 2015 9:21 AM

“Zero SBs since getting caught, and they only won their SBs by three points. I’m sure the videos gave them at least a 3 point advantage or Belicheat would not have done it!”

    —————————————-

There is a fallacy in your reasoning. The Patriots also turned over their all-world defense between 2004 and 2007. Belichick was never able to find the right mix of players to duplicate the skills of Bruschi, Vrabel, McGinest, Law, J. Green (who always had that timely sack of Manning in relief of Seymour), Pfifer, etcetera.

Most dynasties end after 3 in a row or 3 out of 4. Belichick somehow managed to make and nearly win 2 SBs years after the dynasty ended.

This is why the vast majority of coaches who have not had a perfect season tarnished are ready to elevate Belichick to one of the all-time greats (and conversation as all-time greatest).

In fact it was one of the worst things that ever happened in the history of this country. And there’s no doubt they’re still using spygate to win because all of us intelligent fans know that any team with a QB who can’t even throw 2 yards downfield would be 0-16 every year without cheating.

It’s long past time for Bud Selig to fold this team. Do the right thing sir. Show your integrity. Show your love for the game. Stop the cheating. Kick them out of the NFL.

Shula should talk. He cheated all the time. He used to have as many as 15 guys in his offensive huddle, which was totally against the rules.
Shula owned the Rules Committee for years, and everyone knew that.
And in the 1982 playoff game against the Jets, despite torrential rain the day before and the morning of the game, he ordered the Orange Bowl field not to be covered to neutralize the Jets advantage of speed against his Dolphins. It worked and they played in a virtual cesspool.
Yeah, Shula won more games than anyone. But he was 2 and 4 in the Super ?bowl, and lost maybe the most important game in history to the Jets in 1969, despite being an 18 point favorite. It was certainly more important than any other game to the AFL.
Shula had the best QB of his era in Dan Marino, and one of the best to ever play. But because he never gave him a good running game, Marino never won a championship.
Shula’s 1972 undefeated SB winning team is by far the most over-rated championship team I’ve seen, and I’ve been watching the NFL since 1960. Yeah, the won all their games. But they had a soft schedule and everything just went right for them.
But — you line that team up against all the SB winning teams since the first one, and they wouldn’t even be ranked in the top 15.
Shula is an old man now, so we can forgive him for running his mouth. But his record speaks for itself, good and bad. And the bottom line is he won only 2 championships in 36 years of coaching. That, in the final analysis says it all.

Look, I don’t consider videotaping and trying to get a competitive edge against your opponent cheating. The other teams have to be cautious of this and take measures against it. If you think Belichick is the first, then you’re as gullible as the teams getting videotaped. If you’re predictable, then you’re not a very good team. What I question is the League’s officiating competitive fairness (ie Loins/Cowboys game). I just don’t trust them. And the Patriots always seem to be on the beneficiary side, ever since that Raiders game. The Patriots can blame the League for creating that cheating persona. And perhaps the League itself should be considered the true cheaters!

  366. bencoates57 says: Jan 9, 2015 4:09 PM

    Ha ha ha.

ESPN is reporting that the NFL is investigating whether the Browns were sending text messages to and from the sidelines during games. This would violate league policy on sideline communication during games. It is a similar infraction committed by 12 NFL teams in 2007 (around Spygate) concerning violations of the timeframe of coach-to-QB communications via headsets. (The 12 teams were not identified but the Patriots were said to not be one of them).

All Belichick did was keep up with a league steeped in a culture of intelligence gathering. The only real crime committed by the Patriots was winning 3 of 4 SBs — otherwise this would not have been an issue. Had the Browns won THIS year’s SB, this texting issue would end up with a -Gate at the end of it — placed there of course by homer fans of rival teams.

The real question here is NOT who was violating one league rule or another — but who was NOT violating rules.

  367. ditomsween says: Jan 9, 2015 4:10 PM

Say what you want about the Spygate, they got caught, that’s the only difference between BB & The rest.

Especially Shula, excessive watering of the field so his gimp-kneed QB Marino wouldn’t get sacked 30 times a game. Leader of the rules committee (Hmm conflict of interest?). Johnny U thought Shula was a punk.

  368. bencoates57 says: Jan 9, 2015 4:38 PM

Fact – The Patriots were taping Jets defensive signal calling.
Fact – This is against NFL rules.
Fact – The Patriots knew it was against NFL rules.
Fact – They did it because it gave them an advantage.
    …resulting in.
Fact – They cheated to win.

    ————————————————

Fact – An unspecified number of teams violated one league rule or another to gain an advantage. Twelve unnamed teams in 2007 (none of them the Patriots according to league sources) violated coach-to-QB headset communications. The Browns are now being investigating for sideline texting. There have been steroids and cap violations. Player tampering. Signing players just cut by the team you’re about to play. (That one should be illegal).

FACT – Team owners and coaches as well as league officials know this and that is why no one complained when those tapes were destroyed. Any attempt to blow the issue out of proportion would have opened up a league-wide can of worms no one wanted opened.

FACT – Even opponents downplay the advantage gained. The fact is that it is supposed to benefit the offense — and yet Brady struggled through much of the championship years. It’s the defense that won those titles. The fact the Pats have only managed to lose 2 SBs by 3-4 points rather than win 3 by 3 points has more to do with Bill’s trouble finding replacements for the players lost on defense after 2004.

FACT – The Patriots dynasty will continue to be celebrated in the record books, by Patriots fans, and referenced in NFL analysis of the new history being made.

  372. revelation123 says: Jan 9, 2015 8:28 PM

The Patriots got caught cheating. So the nickname does apply and accurately so.

We don’t even know the true extent of the cheating either; as the videotapes were destroyed. If there was nothing left to hide, why destroy the videotapes?

Cheating also comes in the form of committing penalties during a game. For example, you can’t hold a receiver in the attempt to prevent him from catching a pass. Yet that’s exactly what the Seahawks did many times last year in their run up to the SB.

Cheat Carroll knew the refs wouldn’t call every single pass interference penalty against his defenders, so he instructed them to commit the penalty when necessary.

According to those on other teams, that was almost every single play and was outlined in PFT’s “Gilbride says Seahawks have “perfected the art” of pass interference” story last year.

Therefore Patriots fans don’t have to worry about being alone in this; as the Seahawks cheated all the way to a championship too.

The Pats probably didn’t belong on the same field as the Rams that yr either, but won the game on defense. Since they were stealing offensive signals to use to their advantage, why did they’re offense only put up about 250 yrds in each game and score 23pts in both games combined. Unfortunately classless on the part of Shula, who I’ve generally regarded with respect. Shula himself was suspected of cheating on at least two different occasions including huddling too many players on the field and for the mud bowl. Personally, it wouldn’t surprise me if coaches uses every advantage possible to give their team an edge. I recall most pros acknowledged that includes trying to decipher opposing teams play calls and the pats were simply caught in an activity that many teams have engaged, which doesn’t make it okay, but also doesn’t mean it gave them a win. The Pats have been to the post-season 12 times in the last 15 seasons since Belichick has been at the helm. They have been to 5 Super Bowls winning 3. I think it would be hard to claim that Belichick and team have outsmarted all the refs, the league and the other teams in some cheat for all those 15 seasons. Players do actually have to play the game after all. Following the so-called “spygate”, Pats were probably under more scrutiny than most teams. I think Schula’s sour grapes probably come from the fact that Belichick’s win percentage since joining the Pats is significantly superior to Schula’s at Miami and Pats have been a contender nearly every year. It may also have to do with Miami being in the toilet for some time now.

Hey Pats fans we wouldn’t even be having this stupid debate if it wasn’t for all time pats favorite ref Walt Coleman calling the “tuck rule” aka the suck rule. Still the most egregious error by a ref in the post season. If the fumble stands as called then the pats never have a dynatsy and all you bandwagon pats fans would go on not careing abaout anything but the red sox. Walt Coleman needs to be the next loser to into your team hall of fame, sorry I meant shame.

Don Shula is a bitter old man who has become irrelevant in today’s modern era of football. Get it while you can Don because you will soon be forgotten and Belichick will have outdone you very very soon!
Best record in all of Sports over the last decade…check it! Winners win, losers hate!!!!

I’m neither a Shula or BB fan. When some folks reach 85, there is a tendency for things to be spoken with less filters. I think a younger Shula might have held his tongue about BB. But as bluntly as he spoke, the sad reality is, he was right. BB’s staff got caught cheating and the team paid a big fine. BB defenders should stop trying to dismiss that point. And shooting the messenger for pointing it out lacks class.

I am a Bills fan … yea, I know, I accept your empathy … how many Super Bowls have the Bills lost? 5! … including the next one they play in!

Consequently, I am not particularly fond of the Pats … however, what the Pats (including Belichick, Brady, and many others) have accomplished through the years is simply phenomenal.

As to cheating, it’s a bunch of nonsense, a non-story.

Do you really think the Pats had all of that success due solely to filming other teams? Puh … lease!

Do you really think other teams are not doing everything possible to maximize their chances?

And as for Don Shula, so what, he called him Beli-cheat … big deal.

I often tell people, ‘the only thing good about getting old’ is that you can do and say things that would have gotten you into a fight at 25. But now, people just look at you and think — senile, stupid old man!

We have had this great game of football for over 60 years now and there have been there have been may great quarterbacks; Johnny U, Marino, Elway, Favre, Montana, Aikman, Bradshaw, Staubach, Young, Starr, Manning, yes and Brady. Please then answer the following question:

How can the New England Patriots during Tom Brady’s tenure do something that has never been done before ? Win their division 12 out of 13 years IN A ROW ? FOLKS, its a statistical improbability to do that when no one has ever done it before. Teams have bad years, Even without Brady in 2008, they still won 10 or 11 games, OF COURSE BELICHIK CHEATS ! He will do whatever he can to win.

Ask the Baltimore Ravens if Belichick cheats, Ask JJ Watts if Belechick cheats. Ask the New York Jets if Belichick cheats (Jets playbook turns up in New England facilities). Ask Marshall Faulk if Belichick cheats. Ask Carey Williams of the Eagles if Belichick cheats, etc

Kudos to you Don Shula, a man of character, integrity and honor. You won the right way. You embodied great sportsmanship in your sport for so many years.

  399. dstock21 says: Jan 13, 2015 3:35 PM

Say what you want about Shula but he’s right, the Pats cheated and if it wasn’t illegal they wouldn’t have been penalized. Saying Shula cheated doesn’t change the fact the Pats did too or that they haven’t won a ring since they got caught. Brady is better than Marino, but Belchek hasn’t done a thing without Brady so let’s save the BS about Belichek for when Brady retires and he has to it without the greatest QB ever. I know he’s a good coach but honestly the name of his boat should be Brady cause he’d have 0 rings without him.

It’s shocking to me how naive people are, or maybe it is just convenient to be naive in order to feel better about ones own team’s performance; i.e. my team doesn’t win because it doesn’t cheat. It’s not entirely clear why it’s even considered cheating to record a play call that is made out in public in front of everyone. A person in the stands can see the calls and could be recording on their electronic devices. Nevertheless, the league decided to make a clear policy on the matter in a 2006 memo and the Pats were caught violating that policy in early 2007 for which they were fined and lost a key pick. They are guilty of that, there is no debate. But, whoop de do. Even the Jets coach who reported it indicated he didn’t intend to make a big deal about it but that he didn’t want the Pats using Jet’s stadium to get an advantage and he had ability to go into stadium to shut it down. Teams and players have been fined for violating many a policy and they are hardly called cheats or have their victories called into question. And the league did not in fact call any Pats victories into question, but somehow supposedly smarter people in this column are doing so. If you ask any coach, probably Shula included (if he was honest), on whether they taped or attempted to record opposing teams play calling, or had violated some other rule (intentionally or inadvertently) in giving their players every possible advantage, they would say yes. Well, at least two famous coaches, Bill Cowher and Jimmy Johnson were honest to admit that it was common for teams to record opposing team play calls. So, were the Pats simply the only one to get caught and made an example of? We will probably never know, but we do know that they weren’t the only ones who did so when other coaches and commentators have noted it to be common. But, even if you don’t agree with any of this, what’s with the goofball comments from people of saying what have they done since that infraction in early 2007 (or prior)? First, they did nothing wrong prior to 2006 because the rule wasn’t issued until then. Second, they have made it to the playoffs 12 out of 15 seasons since BB took the helm. Third, they are 7 out of 8 since 2007. Not to mention that the Pats probably have the highest, or near highest, winning percentage of any team in the NFL since 2007. Oh and two additional SB appearances. You’d have to be a total moron not to recognize the team’s continued success year-after-year with a wide variety of different players including losing some real stars, players and coaches, that were paid very well to go elsewhere. The constants: BB and Brady.

  401. orrnumberfour says: Jan 13, 2015 6:37 PM

Shula could not win a SB with Dan Marino. Give Belichick Dan Marino and he wins multiple superbowls. Shula hung around a long time, but Belichick is clearly the better coach.

    ======================================

what do all these people have in common?

oh yeah, they lost to the Patriots

    9 AFC Championships
    5 super bowl appearances

they cheated, they knew the plays…BWAAAAHHHHH

your team knows the offensive play when they leave the huddle, how come they ever drop a ball, how come they don’t run for a first down on every play?

because the game is a game that is in motion, players have to execute, they have to have a brain.

    or they can just cry

  403. mkword says: Jan 16, 2015 7:57 PM

Once again the Haters have shown that they are the cheaters. They are cheaters because they live in willful ignorance of the facts surrounding Spygate.

They refuse to understand that the taping of signals has long been a part of the game. They don’t seem to understand that the real rule underlying where and where not taping can be done is about teams being not allowed to use the videos DURING THE GAME THEY WERE SHOT IN. Which is 1) basically impossible because it takes a considerate amount of time to analyze and 2) something no team has ever been accused of INCLUDING THE PATRIOTS.

Spygaters refuse to acknowledge the clear and simple fact that the memo issued by the NFL about not shooting from sidelines was created in 2006. Which means there is nothing by which anyone can discredit the Patriots Super Bowl wins. And the Patriots were accused of doing it in the first half of the first game of the season in which the new rule was administered and since then has never been accused of the same infraction. Which means the Patriots actually got better when their sidelines were empty of cameras.

The Spygaters also refuse to acknowledge the fact that the Patriots never videotaped the Rams walk-through before the Super Bowl. Instead, they prefer to believe the lie that Matt Walsh told the Boston Herald. A lie that was outed by other members of the Patriots video crew. A lie that Matt Walsh later confessed to making. A lie that forced the Boston Herald to retract the story and issue apologies to the NFL, the Patriots and Bill Belichick.

Spygaters need to live in the falsehood created by a disgruntled employee. They love the lie. They regard the lie as truth because it allows them to exist in a world where the Patriots taped every single practice of their opponents.

Spygaters are truthers who will not be dissuaded by facts or evidence. They need to live the lie because their resentment of the Patriots is that strong. I will acknowledge that it is human nature to get tired and/or resentful of winners that keep winning. It is human nature to want to see the constant winner upset … or see them stripped of their authenticity due to some scandal where it is revealed that all this winning was not due to superior skills and intellect. However, it must be stated that this is NOT a commendable human behavior. It is petty and small. It reveals a deep insecurity when someone refuses to acknowledge someone else’s skills, determination and hard work.

I think we can all be accused of demonstrating this behavior at times in our lives. It can be very easy to resent people we do not think are legitimate winners. Modern media shoves winners down our throats constantly. But when rabid resentment builds against those who have legitimate skills and work harder than others to achieve success, this human behavior becomes classless, mean and ugly.

So that is your decision Spygaters. Either learn and acknowledge the real truth behind Spygate … or continue to cheat. Continue to believe something that is not true. Continue to believe the Patriots were accused of something they were never accused of (using tape of signals in the game they were shot). Continue to believe that Matt Walsh’s lie is not a lie. Continue to believe something even Matt Walsh did not lie about … believe without a shred of evidence that the Patriots have had a long standing practice of filming opponent’s practices.

It’s up to you Mr. and Mrs. Spygater. Cheat. Refuse to acknowledge the skills of Belichick and Brady. Refuse to acknowledge all their hard work and ingenious game planning. Cheat. Just keep pretending that (despite the facts) the Patriots aren’t very good and the only way they could possibly be so successful is from cheating.

1 perfect season or winning your division for the last 15 years along with a few Afc’s and a few superbowls. There really isn’t a comparison between the two.

I also find it so funny that non patriot fans think that their teams have never done spying. You can continue to feed the illusion but rest assured that the reality is that they do. But I guess we can’t be the best at everything.

I absolutely love hearing about how the Patriots are this or that. It just shows that you know who the better player’s, team and the coach who is better than anyone else by a lot. (Not to mention probably the 1st to actually read the rule book. Now there’s a novel concept. ) because nobody puts a target on second place
    .
Unfortunately for the non NE fan you have to watch the best run of a team ever make history. And until Bill retires this is your future.

You ever wondered how a team can loose so many key players and still mange to win the afc. That is not luck that is Bill and something that is far harder than a perfect season

Being stuck in the “sucks right now ” is far worse than ” might suck in the future”. I know that you all realize this fact because why else would you be bitching?

Oh in closing, as I am sure many are debating the deflated balls. You have to be a complete moron to not realize that if you inflate a ball in say a room at 70 F and then take same balls outside into 30 degree air that the psi will in fact be lower. But because another disgruntled fan was upset that they lost and wanted to get a shoot in retaliation is pathetic and is the definition of asinine. They started off well but as soon as the freezing rain sapped the warmth out of them where they could only think about one thing. Staying warm had nothing to do with the outcome. Welcome to NE where football is played outside regardless of the weather.

“Coach” Shula is the architect of the two biggest choke jobs in NFL chapionship history: The Browns dismantling of the Colts in 1965 and, of course, Super Bowl III.

He also conveniently omits any discussion ever of his poor post-season record or his own “cheating.” In direct violtion of NFL rules, he ordered the tarp left off the field before the AFC title games against the Jets and of having too many players in the huddle during games.
