How did Belichick not know until Monday?

AP

In response to the lengthy statement from Patriots coach Bill Belichick regarding his knowledge (or mainly lack thereof) regarding #DeflateGate, one major question has arisen, as noted by one of Thursday’s callers to PFT Live.

How did Belichick not know about the controversy until Monday?

“When I came in Monday morning I was shocked to learn of the news reports about the footballs,” Belichick said. “I had no knowledge whatsoever of this situation until Monday morning.”

So the head coach of an AFC finalist didn’t know, and wasn’t told, that his team’s footballs were confiscated at halftime of Sunday night’s game? No one told him at the time, and no one told him after?

Moreover, Belichick didn’t wonder what was happening when the first New England play from scrimmage was delayed at the start of the third quarter?

There’s no reason to believe that Belichick wasn’t being honest on Thursday. But it simply doesn’t seem plausible at this point that Belichick didn’t know anything about the topic until Monday morning.

Reasonable point. However, does honesty and Belicheck ever fit in the same sentence?

Nobody knows nothing. Deny, deny, deny.

  3. titans4evr says: Jan 22, 2015 5:47 PM

I think he obviously knew by the first thing he said after the game: “We are on to Seattle.”

Someone’s got his lawyer pants on.

  5. rayburns says: Jan 22, 2015 5:48 PM

So, Belichick was not entirely truthful?

    or

The NFL is seriously coitus-ing the pooch on this investigation?

    I’m sorry, that’s too close to call….

Because he knows how to stand up under interrogation unlike the wimps who got caught in New Orleans who started taking pleas.

    He was on to Seattle.

  9. giants89 says: Jan 22, 2015 5:49 PM

Suddenly, Belichick knows nothing about football rules and procedures. Strange for someone widely viewed as an extremely detailed coach. Before today, Pats fans would tell you he could recite the entire rulebook off the top of his head.

No, there are plenty of reasons, being a serial cheater and liar is just one of them.

    Belicheat is a liar.

    Tom Brady is a liar.

    Kraft is liar.

The whole world didn’t know until Monday.

  16. aljack88 says: Jan 22, 2015 5:51 PM

Brady would have known about any change for sure.

  17. millarddjr says: Jan 22, 2015 5:51 PM

Could it be, since each time provides 24 balls in poor weather, that they simply started using the backup 12 and didn’t inform the team? And there are delays all the time in football….

  18. andyr2120 says: Jan 22, 2015 5:52 PM

Giving the appearance of lying isn’t a good move, Coach. Come clean or face a stiffer penalty.

  19. fanfrommontreal says: Jan 22, 2015 5:53 PM

The same way Pagano said he wasn’t aware of anything even though he was told about it by his equipment manager at half-time and advise his GM, or at the previous game with the Pats in November if we are to believe what we read on sports blogs like this one.

  20. edelmanfanclub says: Jan 22, 2015 5:53 PM

Starting to miss the Manziel, Tebow and Favre stories on here.

  21. DrSteveBrule says: Jan 22, 2015 5:53 PM

The Patriots have identified the culprit and the equipment manager has been terminated.

  22. lgw91s says: Jan 22, 2015 5:53 PM

Nobody knew anything until some reporter from Indiana posted a tweet hours after the game. The announcers didn’t know what was happening. Simms said it was probably using a kicking ball.

As a Hawks fan, I kind of wish this would go away so the focus of the SB could the two best teams in the NFL this year going at it. If they broke the rules or not, it will not have any impact (maybe perhaps mental) on the game. No one will be suspended for the game, so it really won’t effect the outcome. I do have to admit though, the conversations being had around the office about balls is pretty amusing.

  24. elmobad says: Jan 22, 2015 6:02 PM

Doesn’t matter who knew or at what time.. RULES WERE BROKEN.. for the second time that we know of..
I remember thinking that the Saints bounty scandal was laughable. being shocked at the outcome. most teams rewarded big hits, even the NFL sold videos.

    keep it fair Goodell

  25. willycents says: Jan 22, 2015 6:03 PM

I wonder if he will ask Brady during the game if the balls feel ok during the SB?

  26. wadster says: Jan 22, 2015 6:04 PM

Enough with the ignorant accusations. Show me the proof either one of them did anything or instructed anyone to do anything to the footballs.

  27. canetic says: Jan 22, 2015 6:06 PM

He meant the Monday before the AFC title game, when he deflated the balls

  28. ravensaresuperior says: Jan 22, 2015 6:10 PM

And through all of this the Steelers fans are still the worst in football.

  29. lemmetalkwouldya says: Jan 22, 2015 6:16 PM

How is this any different from Chuck Pagano stating on Monday that he knew nothing about this, when it turns out that HE brought the issue to the attention of his GM, who then informed the league?

    Condemn one, condemn BOTH

  30. blizzard01 says: Jan 22, 2015 6:21 PM

Look, he was already on to Cincinnati.

  31. cowboysdude says: Jan 22, 2015 6:22 PM

He meant monday after the first day he was hired.. of course he knew.. just another blunder by the NFL.. what a joke.

  32. duffelbagsports says: Jan 22, 2015 6:23 PM

This is just a distraction and is taking the focus off of the Pro Bowl

  33. weepingjebus says: Jan 22, 2015 6:31 PM

He just won a 45-7 night game victory in the AFC championship, and celebrated on the field. This didn’t turn into a thing until a bitter Indianapolis reporter started whining about it later that evening.

  34. aznwhip says: Jan 22, 2015 6:34 PM

I’d think during a conference championship game, the head coach would have more important things to do like… actually coaching… than be bothered with what at that time wasn’t a big deal. The equipment manager supposed to go up to Bill and interrupt him while implementing his halftime adjustments with this? And after the game, well, everyone was really too caught up in the festivities and pomp I’d guess.

  35. abqhawk says: Jan 22, 2015 6:42 PM

He didn’t know due to a severe case of selective denial.

  36. vwbrown19 says: Jan 22, 2015 6:54 PM

I said the exact same thing how did he not know until he came in Monday morning was he cut off from everything. He’s foul.

  37. m4hawk says: Jan 22, 2015 6:54 PM

I will blame the weak kneed nfl if they don’t finally do something right the first time. Where is the nfl leadership anyway. Hello we have a issue here fellas

  38. proudchowdahead13 says: Jan 22, 2015 6:59 PM

I’m a Pats fan and I can’t believe that the officials said nothing to Bellichick about switching the footballs at half time due to the original footballs being under inflated. I would truly like to believe him, and Brady, but I think they are both liars. Hurts to say it, but there it is.

  39. xxsweepthelegxx says: Jan 22, 2015 7:00 PM

“Your face, my space, his face, whatever his face. You’ll have to ask them”

    Simply the best.

They were told they are getting a new ball during the delay to start the economy half, why would a coach think “oh my gosh, full blown investigation coming?”

They change out balls throughout every game, nothing new to see from a coach of 20 years

  40. bucsorbust says: Jan 22, 2015 7:26 PM

There is no way the league or anyone else is going to believe neither Belichick or Brady knew anything at all. Belichick’s comments served to keep the heat off of Rooney and Kraft, and Brady’s diversion was just to buy time for the next 11 days. Then somehow I’ll bet some folks suddenly remember something about the balls.

  41. proudchowdahead13 says: Jan 23, 2015 10:18 AM

I’m a die hard Pats fan, and I can’t imagine the officials not telling him that the footballs were replaced at half time due to being under inflated. I think he must think everyone is naive, or just blindly loyal to the team. They needed no extra edge to beat the Colts. This whole situation is unnecessary, and sad. I also doubt Brady’s honesty in this matter. Maybe my fellow Pats fans will hate me for this, but it is my opinion.

  42. mornelithe says: Jan 23, 2015 5:40 PM

Why would you question it? The QB is the one who chooses the balls, tells the equip manager what pressure they want, scuffing etc… Why would BB make unilateral changes to a ball, that could adversely impact his QB’s performance?

Has anyone asked Green Bay’s coach, whether they knew Aaron Rodger’s routinely submits over-inflated balls, pre-game, and expects the refs to deflate them?
