NFL warns Marshawn Lynch a crotch grab will cost 15 yards

cd0ymzcznguwzdbhnduynddiytjhm2yyzthlmtjjotqwyyznptlim2u1zmu0nmizodbmmme4yju1mdi4yju2zde4ogvm AP

The threat of fines has not deterred Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch from grabbing his crotch after scoring touchdowns. But the threat of a 15-yard penalty might.

The NFL wants Lynch to know that officials will be on the lookout and ready to assess a 15-yard penalty if Lynch does it again. NFL V.P. of Officiating Dean Blandino told ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio that the Seahawks have been warned that if Lynch makes an obscene gesture at any time during Super Bowl XLIX, the Seahawks will be penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Blandino told Paolantonio that if Lynch grabs his crotch after scoring a touchdown, “that means they will kick off from the 20 yard line.”

That’s where the Seahawks would have kicked off after Lynch scored a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter of the NFC Championship Game. If the officials had seen Lynch grab his crotch, he would have been penalized.

Lynch got away with it that time. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll will probably tell Lynch in no uncertain terms that he can’t risk it in the Super Bowl. If Lynch wants to pay a fine out of his own paycheck, that’s his business. If he hurts the team, that’s another story.

Hey Marshawn, like it or not, you are idolized by many young kids who want to be the next great running back.
What’s troubling to me is watching my 9 year old playing football with his buddies, and upon scoring a touchdown grab his crotch. When asked why the reply was “because Marshawn Lynch does it”!
Like it or not Marshawn, you are a role model, so why don’t you grow up!!!

  42. annes22 says: Jan 24, 2015 5:18 PM

Lynch is an idiot anyway, so carry on and give your team 15 yd penalties. I am sure he will hear from them if he does. It’s obvious money makes no difference.

  52. ibboydb says: Jan 24, 2015 5:25 PM

No Fun League: you have a rule you are threatening to enforce that is vague and subjective. Yet 11 of 12 footballs that the Pats used, did not meet a WRITTEN rule, yet the NFL must still investigate? At least Lynch proves he has balls to grab!
Grow a set NFL, Fine the guilty team now, get it done with, and if they choose to appeal, great, then investigate!!!
Further proof that 10,000 lawyers at the bottom of the see is a good start!! Oh yeah… Go Hawks!

Love the PED comments that come up on every thread.

Last time the Pats cheated? Last week. And the one before that. And the one before that. And the year before that. And the year before that. They’re probably cheating right now.

Last time the Hawks cheated? Before LAST season kicked off.

And how did they “cheat”? Did they steal playbooks? Did they try to give themselves an equipment advantage the other team didn’t get? Did they clear the snow from FG spots for only their guys?

    No.

Bruce Irvin–a then-3rd-down DE/LB–got popped for a mental focus prescription that 12-year-old boys take too. He sat on the bench, where he spent most of the games anyway.

Keep telling yourselves both teams are “classless cheaters.” One team is in the news every year for cheating. The other accrued zero advantage from its benchwarmers popping focus pills in the “I just heard about Macklemore” era 2 years ago. It’s not the same.

  62. packmanfan says: Jan 24, 2015 5:33 PM

Grabbing your crotch and taunting the opponent is stupid no matter who does it, but if you’re all about “Beast Mode” the NFL is just out to get poor little Marshawn. Lets see Michael Crabtree grab his crotch against the Hawks next year and see what all the “12s” have to say about that.

  77. tigerlilac says: Jan 24, 2015 5:46 PM

I am glad the Pats are playing Seattle, a team that also is also being dogged by the suits in NY. The best two teams are going man against man on the field. Two teams that don’t make excuses win or lose.

Also, a shout out top Rex Ryan, a coach that always played the Patriots tough and took every loss to the Patriots like a man, never saying the Patriots didn’t earn it. I am not surprised that we are not hearing any nonsense from Rex this week. He’s a man.

The NFL should be better utilizing their time and “expertise” on an issue like an integrity of the game infraction vs a touchdown celebration… Goodell needs to get off of Brady’s jock. He wonders why so many people thinks he’s a joke… SMH

  96. icantblvit says: Jan 24, 2015 6:03 PM

I am just curious – you can make a penalty right before the Super Bowl? Aimed at one person? This is incredible. The NFL’s focus is so misdirected. We are so wound up on a crotch grab, and I read where people are making this a class issue, watch tv, listen to music and watch music videos and then compare. Holy Mack – plus allot of haters out there looking for an excuse to vent because their loser team didn’t make it. What a life you lead.

  97. sayitaintsoflorio says: Jan 24, 2015 6:04 PM

  98. theeshawn says: Jan 24, 2015 6:04 PM

  99. winninaintsinnin says: Jan 24, 2015 6:07 PM

Maybe the NFL should look into it and do an extensive study that will end in the off season with a slap on the wrist.

Oh wait, that’s reserved for actual cheating in the game if it’s by Krap’s boys.

This is FAR more important to the NFL.

When the Hawks are up by enough, I hope he grabs it good.

  100. cactusbojo says: Jan 24, 2015 6:08 PM

Should be ejected. The game is televised to families and children. Fondling your private parts on tv is not good for the game. When my 5 year old saw that he pointed to the TV and said “he gotta go potty”. Very confusing for the children.

  101. bannedfromchoirpractice says: Jan 24, 2015 6:12 PM

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. It could be argued that, for Marshawn, grabbing of the crotch after scoring a touchdown is a behavior driven by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), which is a psychological/medical condition that is protected under the ADA.

  102. dmvdmv101560 says: Jan 24, 2015 6:13 PM

  106. denverdude7 says: Jan 24, 2015 6:20 PM

Penalty should rise according the number of times he does it.

    1st – 15 yards
    2nd – 30 yards
    3rd – 45 yards
    4th – 60 yards

Maybe then Pete Carrol will ask him politely to cut the 12 year old stuff.

  117. markv00 says: Jan 24, 2015 6:37 PM

Lynch and the Patriots are two different issues. In the Patriots case the amount psi claimed to be deflated should have been noticeable to any player that touched the ball. And what about the officials? It was raining, the official either gets a ball from the sideline or the current ball, wipes it down, holds a towel over until the offense comes up to the like and place the ball down, he didn’t notice anything wrong. A non issue.

Lynch on the otherhand has been fined (didn’t stop him), penalty for any obseene gesture if it’s seen by the official (might work), throw in any obscene gesture from either team to make it fair and on the second one loss of down and automatic ejection and depending on time left in game and any blowout leads where it doesn’t matter, enforce a suspension to start the next season.

Now that will put an end to this craziness.

My suggestion to the NFL is cut all of the lewd sexual innuendo and show boat dance celebrations out next season. 1st warning is a 15 yard penalty and automatic $15,000 fine. 2nd time around, $30,000 and 1 game suspension.

I don’t really even see what the big deal is if the grab isn’t absolutely obvious but I also don’t understand why at this point with the trouble he’s gotten into for it the first time he keeps doing it. I don’t think he should’ve been fined for the first one instead of just being warned but now that he’s aware just cut the crap. He keeps acting and making it look like the NFL are the bad guys for punishing him for his antics but how intelligent is he if he hasn’t yet realized the fines will stop when he stops.

I love football. Lots of people love football. But let’s dispense with this notion that somehow football is some kind of classy sport that should be used as an example for our children on how we should behave in life.

This is a sport that is about domination, violence and killer instinct. Perfect for a 5 year old.

This is a sport that objectifies women and dresses them in clothes that leave little to the imagination. Also perfect for a 5 year old.

I don’t know about the rest of you but I learned how to grab my crotch in grade school on the east coast way back in the 70’s – give someone the look, grab your crotch and give the head a little tilt back and we all new what that meant – bite me!

If you want to penalize him then do it for taunting because that is really what he is doing. Don’t give me this moral high ground BS about being an example for our kids and how it is an obscene gesture. It’s a violent, obscene sport with a lot of sexual overtones and displays. And if you are honest you will admit that is part of what you love about the sport.

It is like saying I love porn, but only the classy stuff. Don’t kid yourself, it’s still porn.

“Seahawks coach Pete Carroll will probably tell Lynch in no uncertain terms that he can’t risk it in the Super Bowl. If Lynch wants to pay a fine out of his own paycheck, that’s his business. If he hurts the team, that’s another story.”

Why in the world would you think that? Pete Carroll is the guy who invited agents to his practices and gave them access to his locker room while at USC imperiling the eligibility of every one of his players. The fact is that Pete Carroll always thinks he can get away with breaking rules. And why shouldn’t he? Marshawn Lynch launched himself backwards into the endzone while grabbing his crotch against the Cardinals and there was no call. When Richard Sherman intercepted Rodgers in the NFCCG, Sherman got in the face of the receiver and then went and tried to shake Rodgers hand but no taunting call on either. Carroll is right. Break all the rules you want and 95% of the time you get away with it.

  209. 12thman84 says: Jan 25, 2015 11:56 AM

Penalty should rise according the number of times he does it.

    1st – 15 yards
    2nd – 30 yards
    3rd – 45 yards
    4th – 60 yards

Maybe then Pete Carrol will ask him politely to cut the 12 year old stuff.

Check out the Patriots fumbling rate (plays/fumble) for these time periods:

    Last five seasons 2010-2014 = 187 plays/fumble

    SB winning era 2001 -2005 = 95 plays/fumble

This HUGE difference makes much more sense in light of the news the Pats are playing with deflated footballs which are much easier to grip, hold and secure. In other words, they figured out a way to cheat to gain a truly significant advantage. (Besides any possible advantages a QB may get in throwing the ball.)

Coincidentally the Pats remarkable improvement began in 2007, the year after Tom Brady spearheaded an effort to change the rules allowing teams greater control over footballs used in games.

I love how Pat’s fans call their team a dynasty, and yet Dallas, Pittsburg, and the 49er’s have more SB wins.

Yes, spygate was 8 years ago…and the Pat’s last SB win was over a decade ago. You really want to go there?

Everyone who goes to the Superbowl, should turn their back, while the players for the NE Cheaters are introduced. Maybe, they will get the message, but I doubt it.

When they cheated before, it only cost them a half million dollar fine to win a Superbowl. Talk about rewarding bad behavior!!!!!

The top 8 SB winning teams.

Numbers read left to right by, SB appears, win, loss, and team SB winning percentage.

    1 Pittsburgh Steelers 8 6 2 .750
    2 San Francisco 49ers 6 5 1 .833
    3 Dallas Cowboys 8 5 3 2 .625
    4 Green Bay Packers 5 4 1 .800
    5 New York Giants 5 4 1 .800
    6 Oakland/LA Raiders 5 3 2 .600
    7 Washington 5 3 2 .600
    8 NE Patriots 7 3 4 .429

So, having never previously seen these stats, and hearing “dynasty” thrown about for so many years, the reality is, that the NE organization is 3 out of 7 in SB’s.

Okay, so the dynasty talk clearly was just another in a long list of lies.

Look, I’m a Hawks fan. I love Beast Mode. But his insistence on the crotch grab is frustrating. There are plenty of ways to celebrate. I love the stop, shake hands and walk off move he has. But there really is no need for a crotch grab.

But as for your ridiculous Patriots fan view, heres the fact that you and the rest of your “kind” so obviously miss:

STOP saying the game was a blowout and it didn’t matter. The fact is, when the balls were doctored was BEFORE the game started. There was no blowout. This wasn’t an act that started in the 4th quarter. The score was 0-0 when the cheating happened.

And yes a 1lb. does matter, if it didn’t Brady would not have said his perfect ball was “12.5 psi”. He would have said anything in the 12-14 range was good with him. Everybodies hands are different. Every player has different hands. Having the ball fit your hands to its best capabilities gives you the best accuracy and touch. That’s simply common sense.

The NFL knows something happened. They know this is yet another black mark. I don’t think it’s the “giant scandal” it’s made out to be, but it was definitely skirting the rules and this is getting pushed aside with the “independent investigation” till after the Super Bowl in an attempt to avoid it detracting from the NFL’s night in the sun.

What is sad, and sucks, is the fact that this continues to happen. Whether it was spygate, taping sideline signals, deflategate, or the never used rotation of tackle eligible players, one of the greatest coaches (Bellichick) and one of the greatest QBs in the games history are tarnishing their own legacy with this garbage, when factually, as the game against the Colts showed, it was really never needed.

    Kind of sad.

Don’t warn Lynch. Just fine him. He’s doing it for publicity and you just give him more.

All players agreed, through the NFLPA, to abide by the league rules. Lynch knows that he’s breaking the rules and chooses to do it for publicity.

Stop giving Lynch a forum to make these stupid statements and he’ll stop too. Lynch like the press. He likes the attention and he’s obviously willing to pay the fines.

  219. packerbacker12 says: Jan 25, 2015 2:49 PM

“Just let these men play and stop taking the fun out of the game!”

How is fining Lynch for grabbing his crotch taking the fun out of the game? This is professional football. There is no room for that kind of childish behavior. You ever see guys like Barry Sanders do it? Emmitt Smith? Walter Payton? No because they played the game it was meant to be played. They didn’t grab their crotch when they scored.

    Actually 0-7.

Pats are yet to win without proven cheating.

They’re Buffalo except Buffalo played honorably.

Also the Steelers used horse steroids and haven’t won a playoff game since their team doctor was busted for steroid distribution.

THis year’s Superbowl is being ruined by all of the haters on both sides.

On one side, you have the fans that hate New England. THey call them cheaters, and to be fair, they did get caught cheating 10 years ago and paid for it. No other cheating has been proven, but haters are haters.

On the other side, you have the fans that hate the Seahawks. They call them cheaters for using PEDs and for their coaches antics while coaching in college ranks. No new PED use has been proven, but haters are haters.

TO sum it up. I think that both sides need to let it go. As it is, if Seattle wins, people will say that they cheated. The same goes for New England.
