Bill O’Brien: We’ll probably have a quarterback competition

The Texans played four different quarterbacks last season, opening the year with Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starter and closing it with Case Keenum playing in a Week 17 win.

That win left the Texans with a 9-7 record that had some wondering what Houston might have been able to do in the AFC South if their quarterback play had reached a higher level than Fitzpatrick, Keenum, Ryan Mallett and Tom Savage were able to achieve during their turns in the lineup. Head coach Bill O’Brien said this week that the team’s in the process of evaluating their options inside and outside the organization while planning for the offseason.

‘We’ll make the right decision and it will probably be a competition,” O’Brien said, via the team’s website. “It will be something where guys come in and compete and have to win the job and that’s the way it should be and that’s what we’re looking to do.”

Savage was a fourth-round pick last year, which probably nets him a spot on the roster for at least one more year. Mallett is set to become a free agent while Fitzpatrick is coming back from a broken leg and there won’t be room for both of them and Keenum if the team is going to bring in anyone to join the fray at quarterback.
