Jerry Rice admits to cheating, says everyone did it

With Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice applying an asterisk to New England’s latest Super Bowl win, Patriots fans will now apply 1,549 asterisks to Jerry Rice’s career achievements.

On Friday, PFT pointed out (at the behest of multiple Patriots fans) a recent admission from Rice that he applied stickum to his gloves.

“I know this might be a little illegal, guys, but you put a little spray, a little stickum on them, to make sure that texture is a little sticky,” Rice said with a laugh as part of an ESPN feature regarding the evolution of gloves.

At a time when many were expecting Rice to claim that his words were taken out of context or that he was joking, Rice has taken to Twitter to admit that he did it, and that it was more than “a little illegal.”

“I apologize ppl after doing my research about stickum!,” Rice said.  “The NFL banned this in 1981.  All players did it! .”

The banishment of stickum sparked the increased use of gloves.  Rice, who was drafted by the 49ers four years after stickum became an illegal substance, enhanced the gloves with stickum.

“I’m going to be point blank, I feel like it’s cheating,” Rice told Jim Rome on January 22 regarding the current controversy regarding whether the Patriots deflated footballs.  “Because you have an edge up on your opponent and it’s unfortunate that it happened.  I’m not saying the outcome of the game would have been different or anything like that because they got beat 45-7, but they still had an edge.”

By claiming that “All players did it!” regarding stickum use, Rice is trying to create the impression that he didn’t have an edge.  Regardless, it’s now clear that the greatest receiver of all time cheated — and it’s hard not to wonder whether Rice discovered the glove-stickum combo at some point during a rocky rookie season that featured nearly enough drops to get him benched.

Indeed, Rice at one point in 1985 ditched his glove and went back to catching footballs bare-handed.

I had to get back to my hands,” Rice said in 1985, from a 2006 item by Mike Tanier of FootballOutsiders.com.  “My hands got me here.”

At some point, Rice got back to his gloves.  And he started putting stickum on them.  And his gloves with stickum helped get him to Canton.

  1. Apparently, everyone is guilty of cheating. It makes me want to stop watching football.

I am not of the “If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying” philosophy, apparently.

  2. Hear that?

That’s the sound of pats nation basking in your tears jerry.

A hypocrite and a cheater in denial.

Can’t wait for deflategate to be proved a witch hunt. Eat your words jerry.

  3. Jerry was my favorite player growing up and is maybe the number one reason why I learned to love the game. And, he’s being honest, which is fresh air. Still the greatest, and still THE guy.

  4. If I recall, the issue with stickum, and the reason for it being banned, was that it was leaving all kinds of residue on the ball. I’m guessing that if he applied this stuff in a way not to leave any evidence that no one cared. Not defending the cheating, but it is important to understand the background.

  5. Funniest thing is that there’s still some dumb fans out there that think “their” team has never cheated…Wake up NFL fans, all teams have done it and will continue to bend the rules to get a competitive edge.

  6. Wow all these defenses of the use sound pretty familiar. I’m guessing Ruce will get a pass, the Pats obv won’t.

  7. Forget the hypocrisy part. I can’t believe he would actually admit that. What possible good could come out of saying something like that?

And now thanks to his mouth his career has an undeniable *

Randy Moss didn’t need to cheat.

  8. When Pats fans say “See! Everybody else cheats too!” its not to justify the actions of Spygate, but rather to say, “Why are you self-righteously piling on the Pats when every other team/player is also pushing to the edge of the rules too?”

  9. I wonder if Haley will call for an asterisk next to his 49er super bowl wins since their best receiver was openly cheating? Or will he and every other past player who are envious of New Englands success keep their mouths shut for fear of being deemed hypocrits.

Real curious to see “ALL” the information the NFL investigation turns up on” deflategate”. When do you think they will investigate The 49ers stickumgate?

  10. Stickum doesn’t matter. Air in footballs doesn’t matter. A camera in an improper location doesn’t matter. Texting on the sidelines doesn’t matter. Those are all non-scandals. The colts trying to frame another franchise, or turning up the heat in the visiting locker room when the visitors were all sick, or failing to provide anything other than hot water to that same team…that’s more in line with the traditional definition of cheating.

  11. Best receiver of all time. This doesn’t change any of his accomplishments or anything. This should be a reminder to retired NFL players who have media deals not to get caught up in media hype. One of the fun parts of having former NFL players on ESPN or whatever else is they can give fans perspectives on what is actually happening in NFL games.

So day one of deflategate if Rice and other NFL players were honest this never would have been a story. The players could have just been honest that “everyone seeks an edge”, its part of the game or whatever else.

Rice is a hypocrite. But he’s got a lot of company with him.

  12. And that’s why I said get rid of all the Super Bowl rings and start everything anew. All Super Bowl winning teams have cheated. Cheated rings are useless, now that every one knows about it. Throw them away, Tom, Jerry, Rodgers, Steve, and etc.

  13. I think Jerry is just a moron. There was a sticky spray that was sprayed on the old Neuman glove. However it was not the same thing as stickum and was not illegal.

  14. But its cool though right? Its not the Pats.

Trolls will once again find some asinine excuse that what Rice did wasn’t cheating.

While I am a Pats fan, and as soon as you say that people lose all respect because they feel you are being instantly biased, lets think about this for a second:

Pretty simple question: If you smoke crack, but everyone is doing it, does that make it legal? Better yet, if you are doing anything thats deemed not legal/cheating, if everyone is doing it, does that make it legal/not cheating?

To be honest, at this point in time, whether footballs are being deflated (still not proven,) rubbing down footballs, or applying stickum to their gloves, it seems to me the only way to not be cheating is if you take a football out of the box, and play with it with no gloves on. Then, no one is cheating.

We are beyond the point that this talk is blown way out of proportion, and as of now, my thought process is that these guys are the best players in the world, whether they drop a PSI of air, put hairspray on gloves, or take a brush and rub a football.

BTW, all this makes me still say, Barry Sanders is the best of all time.

  15. Even if every single team in the NFL cheated in one way or another, it wouldn’t change the fact that Goodell’s relationship with Kraft almost assures that the Patriots will never be punished. It’s like a free get out of jail card.

in the Patriots situation, they created an edge because the seahawks didn’t

Well since the NFL controlled balls for the super bowl your point is dumb.

  17. Same level of hypocrisy as major politicians in America. Jerry’s ready to run for office.

Sad that some Pats’ fans will think this sort of revelation justifies their own team’s repeated shenanigans.

The NFL has been pretty much dead to me after the Rams and Raiders left L.A. I would occasionally watch the playoffs, but after this year’s controversies (from the usual drug and assault arrests to allegations of cheating to blatant incompetence by referees) I’m going to stick with college ball.

The NCAA is almost as corrupt and brain-dead as the NFL, and many of the players’ personalities/behavior are similarly repulsive, but at least you know those schmucks will be gone after four years.

  18. Hypocrites out in force today. It’s hilarious.

I bet some of that stickem got and the ball and gave Joe a nice grip.

*’s all around. Such a shame.

  19. The question is…how much did the Colts pay the Patriot ball boy to take game balls into a locked room ?

  20. As a Patriots fan I could care less about what people think of my team or Rice using stickem. Stop crying you bunch of little girls.

  21. the holier than thous are backpedaling worse than the classy Seahawks that realized that Gronk is about to throw them out of the club at the end of SB 49.

Without Butlers catch, the weight of the sports would remain on the shoulders of NE for years and years and years.

Funny how your character shows itself in pressure situations, some rise above it and some backtrack like it’s nobody’s business…

  22. Im always amused by the ignorance and hypocrisy of fans when it comes to professional sports and players trying to get an edge. Some how a player gets injured….is injected with steroids aka cortisone and sent back out into the field. ….and that’s ok….but a player uses roids to recover and or enhance his body….and that’s NOT ok? Lol Jerry Rice still had to physically out perform other athletes and still be in position to catch the ball….stickum doesn’t do that for you….hard work does.

  23. So essentially, the point of this article is not that Rice used stickum it’s that New England fans are miffed that their first three Super Bowl wins are tainted by Spygate and now want some parity and are therefore going after a HOF who is part of the dynasty to which to which it’s compared by saying he cheated (as pointed out in the second paragraph).

Obviously it’s shameful that Rice admitted this, his records are seemingly unbeatable but it’s his character and work ethic that always placed him as GOAT. Now it seems that every “Dynasty” in the Super Bowl era has a dirty little secret, go figure.

“Behind every great fortune, there is a crime”
    – Honore de Balzac

  24. So you’re telling me that Rice called out Brady as a cheater on national TV where there is no proof of guilt while he openly cheated himself. To me, he owes the Pats a huge apology. Furthermore, his records could be tainted.

I’m curious what the news will be when the world finds out that the Pats did nothing. We now know that a) the refs never recorded PSIs before the game; b) there’s no proof the refs actually checked the balls pre game beyond a squeeze; c) we have no PSIs of Pats or Colts balls after the game; d) we have no base-line or facts what so ever; and e) we now know that only ONE BALL was 2lbs other (not 11 as reported by ESPN) and that one ball was the one in the Colts possession. fISHY.

Rice, Cris Carter, ESPN, and others should be ashamed for jumping to conclusions and Rice has big egg on his face for being hypocritical.

PS… Hey Carter, looks like Rice says you cheat too. Everyone did it.

  25. Given Rice’s central role in the 49’er’s offence we must put asterisk besides all the 49’er Super Bowl wins then. And unlike deflategate, where we have wildly contradictory reports from Mortenson and Rapport, Rice admits to cheating. Time to put an asterisk on their SB wins!

  26. As more and more teams are shown to have skirted the rules, the zero tolerance Pats haters are finding themselves painted into a corner of their own making.

    I find this hilarious.

  27. Things aren’t ‘a little’ or ‘a lot’ or ‘sort of’ illegal. Legality is a binary, there aren’t ‘degrees’ of illegality. They are either illegal or they are not. Throwing the descriptor ‘a little’ is an attempt to minimize the issue.

  28. Reminds me of one of my grandfather’s “old-timer” sayings…”you talk long, you talk wrong”. Translation: The more you run your mouth, the more you run the risk of talking yourself into trouble.

  29. Oh if everyone did it fine

Too bad jealous fans have convinced themselves signal filming is only done by one team

I’ve always wondered how those same fans explain coordinators covering their mouths even today?

Regardless – it seems like some fans can’t grasp the logic that a 2007 game 1 violation of a 2006 rule does not constitute “cheating” in 2001-2004. So they’re pretty much a lost cause for humanity

  30. patsfan says: Feb 7, 2015 10:40 AM

I REFUSE to think any less of Jerry Rice.

    let this non-story die.
    ——————————-
Of course you do. You are a fan of a team that has a culture of cheating and seem to have accepted it. Some of us though are not too fond of cheating and like games to be decided of who is better rather than who can get away with more.

  31. This is a non story. All the self righteous trolls on this board cheat in some aspect of their life. Everyone needs to let it all go, especially the silly stuff.

  32. Those gloves the WRs wear today are so sticky they probably are what J. Rice used. That aside, 49ers cheated to some Super Bowls, Denver cheated to some Super Bowls and so did the Patroits. Who else should be on list because that probably isn’t it.

  33. First of all Patriots would have beaten the Colts playing with an actual pig as the pigskin. Nothing about the team is tainted in my opinion.

2nd of all, every receiver used a little bit of stickum in the 80s. They made the rule so guys like Fred Biletnikoff didn’t have gobs of the stuff ruin the ball after every play, thats why they outlawed it 81′. Stickum in the 80s isn’t half as a helpful to receiver as the synthetic blend gloves that make guys like ODB make sick catches like he does- and he should. It make it fun to watch.

Rice was just being honest- anyone calling him a cheater is like saying Tom brady cheated if he gets called for a delay of game and you don’t understand football.

  34. I doubt it could be any stickier than gloves are today. Gloves today pretty much catch the ball for you!

if EVERYONE did it ,it’s not cheating
in the Patriots situation, they created an edge because the seahawks didn’t

    —————————————————–

News flash. The issue arose in the Colts game, not the Seahawk game. The NFL had total and complete control and responsibility for all balls in the Super Bowl when the Pats played the Hawks.

But hey, don’t let simple, basic facts get in the way of your narrative.

  36. it would not have even came up if Jerry hadn’t run his mouth about Tom Brady…..shame on you Jerry Rice not only for running your mouth about the Pats but for being a cheater…..no wonder he thinks the Pats cheated…..this guy just went from being a great athlete to being a clown in my book.

  37. It’s great that most of the fans here don’t understand why the pats fans are posting.

None of us really think rice is a cheater or was only successful because of this. We’re just pointing out we wish you had the same level of intelligence about these type of issues when it comes to the pats.

    Guess we’re just smarter.

  38. It is one thing for a PLAYER to cheat NFL rules and not be punished. That likely does happen a lot. However, pPayers are penalized, suspended when they are caught in the act.

It is a completely different thing when the ORGANIZATION cheats and involves ball boys in a deliberate attempt to create an advantage for their team versus another team by tampering with the NFL process.

Deflating balls to corrupt the NFL process is like paying off the Ref to help your team.

    You make my brain hurt.

First, if everyone is doing it, it is still cheating.

Second, there was no advantage. The facts are now supporting a case against the Colts for making this up, not against the Patriots for actually doing anything.

  41. Don’t care about the Patriots or this deflate nonsense.. But it’s wrong by ESPN to have Jerome Bettis, Brian Dawkins discuss this because only thing they are thinking about is Spygate they don’t think this is a big deal. Only reason they are reacting is because the Patriots beat the Steelers and defeated the Eagles in the Super Bowl.. and it was before Spygate. Jerome your own coach said he did the same thing! But man you got beat by Bledsoe in 02 championship game at home and in 05 with a Tom Brady who had a fever the night before.

  42. As a Ravens fan, I am sure glad I don’t have to find comfort in how many other people are cheating in order for me to feel good about our Super Bowl wins.

  44. Please explain how this has anything to do with the Deflatriots letting the air out of balls or taping their opponents. You can’t because it doesn’t. 46. Now all of the top receivers will speak out about how they never had to use stickum. No doubt Cris Carter will take advantage of this to try to get some recognition. He never gets tired to telling people how great he was.

  47. Give Jerry the ridiculous gloves the players get to wear today and he would never drop a pass……Spider man gloves.

  48. When Patriots fans talk about Spygate and say ‘everyone was filming signals’, people said that was no excuse. Same thing, Jerry #equalplayingfield.

    Cheating is cheating.

  49. Ok Haters and Trolls time for you to crawl back into mommy’s basement. The supposed Greatest NFL player of all time has admitted to cheating after taking a swipe at the greatest dynasty of all the New England Patriots !

1.Tuck Rule was neither cheating or put in place for the benefit of the Pats, it was a horrible rule that was correctly called on the field.

2.No team walk thru or practice was ever taped by the Pats but has somehow become urban legend.

3.Spygate was enforcement of a League wide memo about filming from the sidelines the location of the camera was illegal not the act of filming which is still done today…don’t believe it ??? why do coaches cover their mouths when calling plays or have “dummy signals” from multiple coaches on the sidelines during games…

    4. Deflategate a joke of a witch hunt that has more holes in the story than swiss cheese.2 Things are fact…Ball pressure will fluctuate based on atmospheric conditions and Brady completely dominated the Colts in the 2nd half with regulation footballs. He also dominated the best defense in the NFL in the 4th qtr of the Super Bowl.

The accusations and mud-slinging just continue to fuel the Pats,

They have the Best Owner, Best Coach and Greatest QB of all time …….deal with it !

  50. so much crow is being eaten this week that they’re going to have to add the bird to the endangered species list

  51. I like how “everybody’s doin it” is an appalling excuse for others, but just fine for him. The pillars of game integrity Ray Lewis and Jerry Rice. What a joke.

Face it, the Patriots have been out playing teams for 15 years, mostly because of Tom Brady. He’s just been better at the end of games then every other QB in history, and that has turned a lot of losses into wins.

2 years ago Brady had near impossible comeback games against New Orleans, Denver and Cleveland. It should have been a 9-7 season, but it was 12-4 because of him.

It is the ultimate team game, but he is edge that the Patriots have has all this time. Not some deflated football or game tape.

  52. What I’m getting out of this is, yeah, the Patriots did cheat.
It’s just not a big deal.

    amiright?

    Regardless, the Patriots did cheat.
..and no amount of back-pedaling or stories designed to soften the blow will change that.

    The Patriots are cheaters.
    Thanks for finally admitting it.

  53. I think most Pats fans, like me, could care less about Rice using stickum. It’s that the Pats were immediately convicted by ex-players, media and fans before all the true facts came out. I think the Pats will be cleared of any wrongdoing, and Rice will look especially bad and hypocritical as will Haley, Montana, Aikman, Bettis et al who have tried to tear Pats down to benefit the legacies of their own teams.

    _______________________________

Exactly. People complain that Pats fans say “Everybody does it” as some kind of justification, but that’s not true. What drives Pats fans nuts is that fans, “experts”, former players, what have you, love to get up on their judgmental high horses and point their fingers at the Pats as “cheaters” when they know darn well that their favorite teams or the teams they were on, or they themselves did SOMETHING

  55. If Pats’ fans were so confident that the Patriots didn’t do anything wrong, then they would have let this go long ago and moved on with their lives, instead of continuing to harp on it. For some reason they just can’t let it go.

As for Jerry Rice, he needs to speak for himself and knock off the nonsense by playing the”everybody does it” card. It isn’t about everyone else, it is about what he did. He knows what he did, I seriously doubt that he knows what everyone else has or hasn’t done.

  56. Pretty sure everyone still cheats in one way or another c’mon… when you have millions of dollars on the line with careers people do anything. It’s a win now league for young coaches, and players have about 3 years to be somebody or their out the door if you don’t cheat to win someone is waiting at the door that will heck the nfl cheats out of paying taxes every year for a billion dollar company and somehow goodell made over 44 million in one year

  57. Rice – you cheated and knew it, dirtbag cheater.

Funniest post in this thread! Ray Lewis returns from a torn triceps injury using PEDS to win a SB and you’re bragging about doing things right? The guy should have been suspended for his on-field cheating and banned for life for his off field activities, but instead the Ravens built him a statue. Not a surprise given the owner’s original stance trying to sweep the Ray Rice wife beating under the rug.

Seems like you are blissfully ignorant about what your teams is all about.

  60. I don’t give a rat’s backside about stickum or air pressure, I enjoy the game most of the NFL rules can be tossed except for the basic rules as to how the game is played you know 10 yds in 4 downs a touchdown is 6 points 1 point for the point after. Beyond that I really don’t care – if the NFL wants to make the game more exciting — stay out of it and let them play thats what makes it more interesting.

  61. Had Rice not called Brady a liar and a cheat on national TV and had ESPN not been fueling the Deflategate slander of the Pats, this would be a non-story.

Now Rice, ESPN, and the others who jumped to conclusions, and called people out, now have egg on their face.

  62. (cont) to get an edge. You’re stupid if you don’t, frankly.

Fans say “Then why are the Pats the only ones to get caught?” Well, they aren’t, if you’ve paid a little bit of attention. Its just that people don’t care because its not the Pats. There will be a headline, sure, but its quickly forgotten. Fans and whoever will cling to whatever they can to further their agenda to label the Pats the way they want, regardless of the facts that come out.

If the NFL comes back with the results of the Deflategate investigation and say the Pats did nothing, the fans that hate them will just scream that there’s a cover up. We know its coming. Because anything that exonerates the Pats is not what they want to hear. And a cover up will allow them to scream “cheaters!!”. These same fans will make excuses for their own team the same way Pats fans will defend the Pats.

Its just annoying, and super hypocritical. Before you go assigning your sad, bitter little asterisks to the Pats achievements, make sure your own house is in order.

  64. The one thing I’ve learned over the last 3 weeks… Of all the crybabies, whiners and finger pointers, Bills fans are the worst. Apparently they’ve taken the constant beat downs and 20 years of laughing stock status especially hard.

  65. Neither Rice, nor any player, should try to lessen their culpability by saying “EVERYone else did it” or that “ALL players did it.”

Number one, Rice does not have tabs on what EVERY player did or didn’t do.

Number two, it is extremely UNlikely that 100% of the players did it.

Number three, it is very unfair to the players who competed within the rules (and at a disadvantage).

Number four, it’s just bad form to try to derive benefit for oneself by casting negative aspersions on others (in this case, a whopping 100% of the “others).

  66. Go back and look at Rice’s career. He dropped everything in sight during his rookie year and then suddenly developed hands like glue.

I wonder how he did that?
I wonder how many clutch catches he made in all those playoff and SB games were because he cheated?
I wonder how much Joe Montana and Steve Young’s career totals were impacted to this?

Hey, maybe that guy who spent all that time looking at the patriots fumble totals should go back and compare Rice’s catch per target figures each year and quantify the benefit he received from this admitted cheating.

I doubt it could be any stickier than gloves are today. Gloves today pretty much catch the ball for you!

That may or may not be true, none of us know, and that is not really relevant to the fact that Rice cheated during his playing days. And since Rice says “everyone did it”, we also know that the rest of the offensive skill position players on the 49ers also cheated during the 49ers Super Bowl years, and that Joe Montana knew they were cheating.

In other words, we know that the Rice and Montana are sad, pathetic, self-righteous hypocrites. And to think we used to have some respect for those two – we were fools.

  68. Fraud is a deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain (adjectival form fraudulent; to defraud is the verb). So in other words, Mr. Rice….you are A FRAUD!

  69. Let’s see, he played in both Super Bowls against the Bengals and had significant catches. Let’s put an asterisk next to those.

  70. I am a 49er fan and I wonder what prompted Rice to make an absolute fool of himself.
I don’t condone cheating, but surely, he had to realize nothing good was going to come out of putting his foot in his mouth.

  71. CORRECTION:

Jerry didn’t know all of the players in the league.

But he did know all of the players on the 49ers.

So I guess Jerry is implicating all of the ball-handling players on the 49ers.

Wow, his former teammates must be angry that he has accused them of cheating.

  72. Rice’s reputation as a player will never change in my opinion as he is and always will be the greatest WR of all time.

But I just don’t understand why some of these players are so willing to throw each other under the bus for “cheating” when cutting corners to gain a competitive edge is and always has been such a big part of professional football.

Whether it be stealing signals, PED’s, pay for play, attacking injuries, altering footballs, circumventing the salary cap, illegal communications, pumping in crowd noise, or even elaborate forms of espionage anyone who thinks that their favorite team is the one NFL franchise that follows the rules to the letter because they have integrity is foolishly naive.

I guess for some NFL fans ignorance is bliss.

  73. I am not going to call Jerry Rice a cheater, although you would be well within your rights to do so based one his own admissions to applying stickum to his gloves which regardless of what anyone says DOES give you a competitive advantage (and one COULD say, gave Joe Montana an advantage with gripping the ball due to residual stickum).

None of this is deniable because this comes from Jerry Rice himself.

What I DO take umbrage with Jerry Rice is him flat out calling the Pats cheaters based on an initial report from a Colts friendly sports writer and a leak from an anonymous source by Chris Mortensen (Colts personnel maybe).

While I will not call Jerry Rice a cheater, he is arrogant and a hypocrite.

  74. Stickum will be the first product admitted to the Hall of Fame.
Then the football pins used to “deflate” balls.
    Then Hank Stram’s toupee.
    Then Peyton Manning’s cheat sheets….

  75. ALL OTHER TEAMS NEED TO GET IN LINE FOR THEIR BEATING BY THE WORLD CHAMPION PATRIOTS.

GETTING WHOOPED BY THE NFLS GREATEST DYNASTY IS AN HONOR AND A PRIVILEGE.

  76. I’m a Jets fan and I can say this the Patriots are the best team of this decade. They won after spygate and deflate gate is dumb.

Rice used stickum and he’s still the best receiver of all time, he took the gloves off and still produced and Randy Moss comes in at 2nd (former pats player). If Moss put in the time earlier in his career like he did later on he would of been #1 and the game hasn’t really felt right without his presence.

  77. “Please explain how this has anything to do with the Deflatriots letting the air out of balls or taping their opponents.”

Lol the Pats didn’t let the air out of any balls, the Colts deflated the single ball that was significantly under minimum pressure. The others were a small variance which was caused by the temp change/weather.

And since sideline taping was not illegal before 2007 it was by definition not cheating.

Don’t let actual facts get in the way of your whiny, emotional response about the mean ol’ Pats though.

  78. BTW,I’m inclined to believe everyone did do this. Our who team did this in mass. Back in the mid 1990s with the cloth and leather gloves.

  79. Ha, the nerds are going to have a field day with this. Asterisk everything.

If Thomas Jefferson spoke from the grave, he would admit something negative that we could tweet out and disparage him.

Why doesn’t anyone pick on hockey? Because they don’t have a RGoodell that has brought waay too much marketing to the NFL. The NFL is trying to please everyone for money. Now everyone has an opinion on the NFL. Now the NFL has to kiss everyone’s behind. Good luck with that.

  80. I don’t buy two things from Rice’s explanation.

First of all he does NOT know that everyone did it. That is not a fact.

And secondly I don’t believe for a second that he didn’t know stickum was illegal and therefore found out by “doing his research”…

This is what happens when you open your mouth before thinking.

  81. Jerry rice will now forever have ********** next to everything he’s ever done. 49ers titles tainted his records tainted. Cheated to win Superbowls and break records should be thrown out of canton

  82. Some much cheating in this game.

    Here is another example.

“In 1997, New England was at the heart of a delicious bit of espionage. The Patriots had signed fullback Keith Byars that season after he’d been cut by the Dolphins. New England then played Miami in the final game of the season, setting up a rematch in the first-round of the playoffs the following weekend.

Byars taught the Patriots defense all of the Dolphins’ audibles. During the game, linebacker Ted Johnson intercepted Dan Marino’s slant pass and returned it for a touchdown as part of a 17-3 victory. Beyond that, the Patriots defense even communicated to each other using the Dolphins offensive signals as cues.

“They were using our signals all game,” former Dolphins running back Bernie Parmalee said at the time.

So that gets us to the matter of Belichick and his videotaping. In short, it’s wrong and Belichick was warned about it before. Do he and the Patriots deserve the punishment? Yes, he blatantly violated the league rules.”

By Jason Cole, Yahoo Sports Friday, Sep 14, 2007

  83. Rice was so incensed at the Montana/Brady, 49er/Patriots comparisons, that he had to go and run his mouth, all based on a report from a disgruntled Colts reporter and “anonymous” leaks to Chris Mortenson.

    Great job.

If you look around and don’t see a fool — chances are it’s YOU.

  84. kingpel says: Feb 7, 2015 11:04 AM

Now all of the top receivers will speak out about how they never had to use stickum. No doubt Cris Carter will take advantage of this to try to get some recognition. He never gets tired to telling people how great he was.
    ————————————————————
Carter’s reaction will be most interesting. He has been one of the most outspoken Brady critics talking about deflategate as if it is a proven fact and created some huge advantage.

But now here is one of Carter’s biggest rivals, one of the few who outperformed Carter throughout his career now admitting that he cheated to do it? I expect Carter to be livid, and to now try to claim his place as the greatest receiver of all time.

  85. Cheating has and will always occur.

NFL: Bounties easily go back to L.T.’s time, pumping in crowd noise, signing players just to learn the secrets of their former teams, salary cap manipulation, steroids, faking injuries, taking dives to get a flag. The list goes on.

College: paying athletes, enrolling some who wouldn’t qualify if they weren’t offered a sholarship and not being allowed to fail so they can play is nothing new.

In baseball, there will always be vasoline, pine tar, steroids, corked bats, stolen signals, under the table contracts to name a few. Some of these apply to hall of famers.

    Soccer: players flop constantly.

NBA: flops occur, but the real controversy is the legitness of the draft lottery

  86. Who cares!!!!!!!!!!! It helped his grip. Does this and deflated footballs honestly matter? Maybe they shouldn’t wipe the balls down with towels when it rains, or players shouldn’t be allowed to put paint under their eyes to help with glare. Or no to tinted visors on the helmets. Stop shoveling snow to see the yard markers. No more coaches in the coaches booth, they all need to be on the side line like everyone else.
I’m sorry but this is all about what helped grip a football better. I may be alone, but does it really matter. And I honestly don’t think the integrity of the game is hurt. Players are already getting paid millions to play a game.

  87. If Rice got caught while doing it – he would’ve been fined or suspended.

Pats are cheaters, (and oh by the way they’ve been caught before), they were warned to stop cheating yet they continued to do it. They need severe penalties

Byars taught the Patriots defense all of the Dolphins’ audibles. ”

Just another example of the Pats making a legal signing and doing nothing illegal that other fans somehow consider “cheating”.

All teams sign castoffs of their division opponents all preseason and season long. The Pats have had many players signed by the other teams in their division and ones they had coming up on their schedule. Just like every other team.

Keep claiming legal actions by the Pats that are totally within the rules as “cheating” though. And keep acting like the Pats are the only team doing things like this.

    SMH

  90. I guess that’s why the refs didn’t think Jerry Rice could possibly have fumbled on the final drive in that Jan. 1999 playoff game that screwed the Packers.

  91. Common sense should dictate to any player, past or present, that trying to tear down the on-field accomplishments of any player, especially one as accomplished as Tom Brady is just dumb. That goes for the media as well.

The motives for tearing down said players is almost never the professed desire to protect the “integrity of the game” but rather to elevate one’s own accomplishments or to advance professionally.

Live by example and don’t point fingers is a wise philosophy.

  92. Um Dolphins guy. How would a running back know all the defensive signals the dolphins use? Wouldn’t he be more concerned learning his own plays? Not to mention teams change signals all the time because they know other teams have scouted them out. Geez. Seems like even without video teams have to make changes because somehow folks are learning signals. Could it be because they have photos of every play on the field. Could people write them down? Could someone lip read? Yeah that non video thing really solved the whole signal thing. What a joke. Do you really think that they are not watching signals during a game to see if they can figure out what to run against those signals? Grow up and quit being so naive

  93. “Even if every single team in the NFL cheated in one way or another, it wouldn’t change the fact that Goodell’s relationship with Kraft almost assures that the Patriots will never be punished. ”

Funny how everyone making this claim ignores the salient fact that if Goodell were really protecting the Pats and friends with Kraft, that there would never have been a deflategate in the first place as he would have warned the Pats before the game and made sure it never came up.

Salient fact 2. Goodell is a former employee of the New York Jets. They hate the Pats with a passion. Goodell hates the Pats with a passion or again, deflategate would never have come up.

Keep ignoring the important facts so you can keep your panties in a bunch though. Lol

  94. “1999 XXXIII Denver
    1998 XXXII Denver”

Denver salary cap cheated both those years and was fined and docked draft picks for doing so. How are they not on your bitter little list of asterisks ?

The Steelers are famous for rampant roid use, how are they not on your bitter little list of asterisks ?

Keep digging and I guarantee you’ll find something every single one of those teams did that someone here will call “cheating”

  95. The amount of naivety in these comment is hilarious , if you think your favorite team or player of the past or present isn’t doing everything they can do without thinking they will get caught to gain even the slightest advantage then you have no idea how competition works .

  96. All 49ers rings with Jerry Rice are officially TAINTED!
And that includes two of Montana’s rings he would have never won without Rice’s FILTHY CHEATING!

PS – Pats haven’t won a Super Bowl since….6 days ago. HAHA! Hi haters! You mad?

  97. Let us ALL be fair now…

    **Jerry Rice**

**Any San Francisco 49er *Championship team Jerry Rice was on**

    *******************************************

    Jerry….you are priceless…..and a fool.

  98. Ah, before we interview 5,000 players about what they thought the deflation netted the Patriots, could we at least determine the Patriots deflated footballs?

  99. The reason this is a big story is that it is not a story. The point for all you Pats haters is that all players on all teams are looking for every competitive advantage. Jerry Rice used stickem to gain advantage: what a shocker!!!!! Not.
Pats fan here. Jerry Rice broke the rules and got away with it. I don’t care. He is still the greatest receiver of all time.
Belichick was arrogant and broke the rules by illegally positioning video camera. He and the team got caught and paid with unprecedented fines. Move on. Patriots have been outstanding organization for 15 years running: deal with it!!!!

  100. **This admission is more damning and really a HUGE news story. ** JERRY RICE CHEATED AND CLEALY ADMITS IT……

    **DAMN**

    *********************************************

By claiming that “All players did it!” regarding stickum use, Rice is trying to create the impression that he didn’t have an edge. Regardless, it’s now clear that the greatest receiver of all time cheated — and it’s hard not to wonder whether Rice discovered the glove-stickum combo at some point during a rocky rookie season that featured nearly enough drops to get him benched.

Indeed, Rice at one point in 1985 ditched his glove and went back to catching footballs bare-handed.

“I had to get back to my hands,” Rice said in 1985, from a 2006 item by Mike Tanier of FootballOutsiders.com. “My hands got me here.”

At some point, Rice got back to his gloves. And he started putting stickum on them. And his gloves with stickum helped get him to Canton.

  101. If Rice hadn’t said “I’m going to be point blank, I feel like it’s cheating,” with regard to the Patriots, I would have given him a pass, but he now comes across as a hypocritical fool only concerned with his legacy. I’m looking forward to the results of the investigation that exonerates the Patriots. Nonetheless, there will be a chorus of idiots who will say it is a cover-up and the Patriots are “habitual line-steppers”.

  102. There’s a lot of fear out there in Patriot’s land being masked by ego and bravado. They are now collecting other team’s missteps to show they aren’t the only cheating team (while still professing their own innocence). Add SF, Falcons, Saints, Browns, etc. Others will surely follow. The game is becoming tainted.

Gone are the glory days when we were oblivious to these subtle “nuances” of the game. And if it was discovered it was called gamesmanship.

But these days the stakes are too high. We micro-analyze by instant replay, counting the blades of grass between two feet down or out of bounds. If we go to such great lengths to get one game right, then any evidence of cheating must be punished. Otherwise we risk watching a game of lies.

  103. Looks like Joe would would never have won more than TWO SB’s if Rice did not cheat. Think about that Rice, Haley, Montana!

Tpa43…. You forgot the * after the two Ravens SB’s. Just ask where the White Suit is……

As to Randy Moss, if he had played his entire career under Brady, he would be the number 1 receiver of all time. He had the most TD’s by a receiver in the one year he play with Tom.

Rice is just like Clemens, 354 wins, with most of the 154 inflated by PED while most normal person falters with age. I Jerry’s case, it’s Stickum.

  104. evilglazers666 – regarding Patriots signing of Keith Byars years ago. The Patriots have a long history of getting good performances from other team’s cast-offs. Byars was valuable to them for what he could do on the field, not as an informant. Besides, it isn’t cheating to sign another team’s former player and get info from him. It’s just not the big deal that some imagine it to be. Teams learn much more from scouting, game film, etc. about an opponent than any former player can tell them.

If the Dolphins failed to routinely change their signals, then it is inevitable that their opponents would figure them out.
The Dolphins whining about this was pathetic.

  105. Guess what Jerry Rice. EVERY team was videotaping because it was LEGAL and EVERY team plays fast and loose with football/inflation, including Aaron Rodgers, who likes his footballs OVERINFLATED. And the NFL does not care since they’ve never enforced the fine on the books for that. So I guess by that definition, the Patriots NEVER cheated either since EVERY team was doing the same thing as them.

  106. While Jerry Rice was an excellent receiver he also had two of the best all time QBs throwing passes to him. That had a significant impact on his success. Then throw in the cheating. Just sayin!

  107. Here’s my question: why hasn’t this story shown up on the so-called “World Wide Leader in Sports” site? ESPN still has Haley’s comments pinned to the top of their NFL page, but curiously no mention of Jerry Rice’s hypocrisy in their OWN video! They have also failed to put anything up regarding Ian Rapoport’s report at NFL.com saying that many of the AFCCG balls weren’t more than a few ticks below the limit, easily explainable by the temperature change. Apparently staying on theme is more important than providing balanced coverage.

  108. So what is different here???

Jerry Rice admits to using an illegal substance – cheating to essentially creating an advantage for himself.

Has Brady done admitted cheating? Has Bellichek done that? So are they liars as well as cheaters?
So what is the defense? Everybody does it so what?
Or is it, we didn’t cheat? Lets get it on record. What did Brady know about the ball boy going into the bathroom.

Lets see what Las Vegas does if the Patriots as an organization are cheating in games for 8 years. That is a lot different from Jerry Rice using stick-em.

  109. Of all the cheating scandals, to me the Steroid Steelers was the worst.

They made a deal with the devil, gained an unmatchable physical advantage like the East German Women’s Olympic swimming team, won four SB’s cheating and then the bill came due in the form of death before the age of 50 for many of them.

I’m sure looking back none of the survivors would say the cheating was worth it, but they cannot turn back the clock now

  110. If Rice was using it you know John Taylor and Dwight Clark were.

Did Clark make “the catch” in the NFC championship game with stickum ?

Did Taylor make the game winning catch vs Cincinnati in the SB with stickum ??

    People want to know.

  111. Jerry Rice went to a college that nobody ever heard of. He wasn’t that fast in his hands weren’t that good. It appears that if u add gloves and stickum that you get a HOF player.

  112. “I’m going to be point blank, I feel like it’s cheating,” Rice told Jim Rome regarding whether the Patriots deflated

    Well, well, well.

Mr. holier than thou just stepped in it.

Wonder how many of these other clucking hens want their past reviewed, eh Don Shula?

  113. Jerry Rice*

3 time Super Bowl Champion* with the San Francisco 49ers.*

    Super Bowl MVP*

    NFL Hall of Fame*

Well, no asterisk on being runner up in Dancing With The Stars!

  114. So the mental midget and confessed cheater, Jerry Rice thinks the Patriots have an asterisk next to their titles for something everyone did (Spygate) and something they never did (Deflategate) but this guy admits to cheating and nobody cares right? SMH.

And Florio is such a little *%$#…such a sniveling whiny little %$#@ that he has to point out multiple times he’s only writing the article “at the behest of Pats fans.” He wrote 582 worthless columns about Deflategate nearly single-handedly keeping that non-story alive but is only reporting that the supposed “greatest receiver of all time” is an admitted cheater to appease Pats fans. What a hypocrite.

I’m 100% sure this post will be deleted because PFT is like North Korea…YOU MUST NEVER CRITISIZE THE SUPREME RULER KIM JUNG FLORIO!

  115. Sorry Charles Haley but we’re going to reverse our decision to admit you into the Pro Football Hall Of Fame. It seems that two of your five Super Bowl victories with the 49ers (Super Bowls XXIII and XXIV) would never have happened had Jerry Rice not cheated, by his OWN admission no less.

We just count Lombardi Trophies until we doze off…

  117. WHO CARES! The Patriots didn’t win the Super Bowl because of a barely deflated ball, Jerry Rice isnt the GOAT because of Stickum, and Reggie Bush wasnt the Heisman trophy winner because someone bought him a car . This is no different then any of us who have clocked out a little early, or paid a lunch bill with the company card. Everyone in the world takes a little shortcut here and there, but apparently the message board trolls are the measurement of morality in society. This is not called cheating, this is called life. Get off your high horse.

  118. Barry Sanders should have an asterisk next to his name as well for applying broken ankles to NFL defenders for his entire career.

Now, to keep beating a dead horse, I wanted this lame deflate gate thing to end, but now there is an interesting twist. with only one football being severely deflated (the one in Colts possession) and all the others being just a few “ticks” under (which would seem normal when the Pats say the set their balls at 12.5 and then they are brought out into colder air), it appears there may a good possibility the Colts tampered with the ball to frame the Pats, which would explain the unusual amount of time the NFL is taking to investigate this. Let’s face it, that kind of drama is gonna be fun to see if it’s true.

  119. It’s no different than the gloves that receivers use today that have a tacky grip that helps prevent the ball from sliding through their hands.

  120. I am in no way a defender of the Patriots or a defender of cheating. But, from the moment team sports were invented everyone has been looking for a competitive advantage. Putting stickum on hands, stealing signs, air in footballs, scuffing baseballs, standing on shoes in basketball, corked bats, and on and on. Like I said I am not defending cheating but to think all players and teams are pure as the driven snow and it is only the Pats that cheat is naïve.

  121. Nobody really cares unless it’s the Patriots. I won’t say “haters” as that term is overused. The real word is hypocrites.

I really believe the Carolina GM is the biggest of them all. His offensive line all tested positive for steroid after the Super Bowl and then ten years later, he’s pointing fingers at the Patriots.

  122. Give me Moss. Better hands than Rice as we all know, and didn’t have to use stickem. Rice, like Cris Carter said about himself, could only marvel in what he wished he could do and watched Moss do it. No Montana or Young either, did it with ham n’ eggers, and Brady in the later part of his career for only two yrs. Changing the integrity of the game like Rice to his admission, and the Pats time and time again have has no place in a league that preaches integrity. Maybe we get the same outcome, but they were caught. Just my opinion.

  123. ‘There’s a lot of fear out there in Patriot’s land being masked by ego and bravado.’

    *********************

No there’s not. Not a single molecule of fear. All of us Pats fans know we are living through the last great football dynasty and it will go down in history as the most impressive of all NFL dynasties because Kraft/BB/TB12 did it during the salary cap era.

We have no fear. We merely enjoy pointing to the hypocrisy of all the mouth-breathing loser who keep chanting “asterisk” with regards to the Pats, but want to wave away Brad Johnson admitting he bribed ball boys to deflate footballs before his SuperBowl win, or Rice admitting he cheated with stickum, or Don Shula’s cheating via tampering with the Dolphins (which ended up costing the Dolphins a first round pick, same punishment as Spygate, hmmmm…….), or Aaron Rodgers admitting he over-inflates the balls before games, or the Jets coaches illegally lining up on the sidelines during punts to block gunners from the other team, and on and on and on.

Fear? Not a chance my friend. Just enjoying the ride of watching the greatest coach and quarterback in the history of the game.

    Pats 28
    Seachickens 24

  124. I think Jerry Rice subscribes to the George Costanza notion of lying/cheating. “It’s not a lie if you believe it”. Since Jerry didn’t believe it was cheating, it’s not. As a Patriots fan, I think Belichick felt that way about videotaping signals and still feels that way. Just play by the rules. I also believe the whole defategate thing is foolish and this will be proven out by the Wells report (no apology though to SB winners).

  125. In alphabetical order:

    *Charles Haley
    *Joe Montana
    *Jerry Rice
    *George Seifert
    *Steve Young
    *Bill Walsh

*Everything related to the 49ers “dynasty” years.

  126. Can the media make some effort here ?

Or are they just going to wait for all the historic “edge-seekers” to come forward and deliver these tidbits on a silver platter

  127. Why do so many people lack integrity? There have always been unscrupulous people but it seems most people are today and that’s a damn shame.

  128. Let’s see. Seattle cheated with several players getting caught using PEDs. The Pats supposedly cheated using under-deflated balls to help receivers catch the ball. And Jerry Rice admitted he cheated using some illegal-substance to help catch the ball.

Yeah. So, everyone is a cheater. Who cares? They all do something to gain an edge, even if it’s illegal. No one wants to hear it but that’s the way it is. This stuff goes on all the time in sports and only a fraction of those involved get caught and probably even less than that get exposed to the public.

  129. Quit trying to change the haters minds. The more haters the better. It just makes all the winning better knowing that they’re going to bed crying every season, dreaming their team could be even a fraction as good as the pats.😤

  130. I could care less about any of this. What would bother me more is if the Colts are found to have set up the Patriots for deflating the footballs, that is cheating and should cost them dearly. If it was the Pats, pay the fine and move on. Jerry Rice is a disappointment, and is just plain stupid, but then aren’t all these announcers and analysts? I don’t watch the game to listen to them.

  131. The Patriots have gone from playing Manuel the Spanish Waiter “no compressed, mi know nothing” to Bill Belichick’s and Bob Kraft impersonation of Lance Armstrong looking straight at you and saying “OH, WE WOULD NEVER…”

To now orchestrating a full campaign with background music and all of “HEY EVERYBODY CHEATS, SO THAT MEANS WE ARE OK, AND GOODELL BURNS ALL THE EVIDENCE AND MAKES IT DISAPPEAR”

So the kids are alright! Yeah, football is all about cheating!

That is the new narrative the Patriots are trying to hose the football nation with. THE FOOLS ARE THE OTHER OWNERS who let this rogue up in New England come to a playoff game and whitewash the refs with weird stuff that is above and beyond the spirit of competition.

Whatever happened to Belichick as a kid that caused him to turn into Belicheat! AND HE IS ONE LUCKY GUY AFTER ALL… Brady in the 6th round, the tuck rule, a commissioner who plays bitch to their owner and destroys evidence for them while destroys the New Orleans Saints for something much less compromising to the integrity of the NFL. He then runs into a defensive back in San Diego who instead of taking a knee decides to run it back and fumble it back to the Patriots in the playoff game years ago. .. and now he runs into the TOTAL FLAKE OF PETE CARROLL whose decision turns him into a choking dog of sorts because he did a similar gamble with Texas in 2006 and now had the ring in his finger and handed it back to Belicheat. Lucky man to turn than into a great coaching job … greater than Walsh, Shula, Landry, Lombardi and all of them together. So says Patriot Nation who is busy hosing the nation with “EVERYBODY CHEATS!”

  132. This is very serious Jerry. And I think you might regret saying this. Not a 49er fan but had a lotion deep respect for your skills and records but you enhanced them by making it almost impossible to drop the ball. Very bad day for your legacy. Hurts me to say this but you are no better the the Patriots. Tarnished for me.

  133. ASTERISKS

    for Rice

    for Montana

    for Chris Carter

    and all the rest,

    since, “Everybody did it.”

People talking crap about the Patriots, the greatest dynasty in the salary cap era, are all frauds.

  134. I personally have no issues with Rice using stickum. The issue I have is with the fact that he made multiple comments about the Patriots, calling them cheaters, and then saying they deserve an asterisk next to their title if they won the Super Bowl.

  135. There was an issue with the Dolphins and the Patriots back then and it was that the Pats had videotaped illegally all of the signals and after a game, not a playoff as it is claimed above, the Dolphin players got suspicious because it was obvious that they were taping signals and knew the signals

But it had nothing to do with Keith Byars and the Pats were warned and after that continued to do it and continued and did it into their Super Bowl teams and it took The Mangini guy to stop Belichick because the guy is incorrigible.

He and McDaniels are a common denominator to all the cheating and dubious stuff that goes on such as the idea that the numbers on players back does not mean anything anymore because Belichick decided to break the silent unspoken rules of football that you are supposed to CLEARLY point out who is eligible and who is not. It is not supposed to be a game of hide and seek from play to play and that will be changed because it took a cheater like that creepy man to bring this into play. It is because of guys like Belicheat that we live in a world where so many rules have to be written and enforced because his sort is incapable of ETHICS… ETHICS .

  136. Oh and thanks Indianapolis Colts, you’re shady tactics to bring heat on the Patriots has opened up a can of worms for the NFL and taken the attention away from the play on the field. That Super Bowl was simply amazing and yet people are still talking about cheating.

  137. The Pats the greatest dynasty that plays in a dysfunctional division where the owners and the coaches have not been NFL quality in 15 or 20 years… Dolphins, Bill, Jets, please. Amass enough victories against those guys and get 2 playoff games at home and that is a dynasty…

A Dynasty that had not won in 10 years…. no no no.

And forget about the salary cap era. The dynasties of yesteryear were torn apart by other leagues like the USFL… for example, the Dolphins 3 key players on offense left the team to the USFL Csonka, Warfield and Kiick and 3 of their coaches also left for the USFL.

The problem with Pat fans is that they only read their own blogs and nothing else. Just like Republicans and Democrats who watch only FOX or MSNBC and everyone else is a communist or a fascist, respectively.

    —————————————————

    Word

  139. Wait a minute ….. Jerry Rice ADMITS to using a banned substance – stickum – says that everybody did it, and says that it didn’t really give him an advantage.

Then he goes on to crucify Tom Brady as a cheater for using deflated footballs – which STILL hasn’t been proven! – and goes on to say that saying “everybody does it” is no excuse, and he asks “if there is no advantage, then why is he doing it??”. Lastly, he puts an asterisk next to Tom Brady’s four Super Bowl wins.

    Not TOO hypocritical, eh Jerry????

If you cheated by using stickum illegally, then Joe Montana’s records are every bit as tainted as Tom Brady’s records are, and both you, Joe, and the entire 49’ers organizationshould have multiple asterisks beside your Super Bowl wins and HOF statistics.

  140. It’s a shame that Tom Brady and the Patriots got caught RED-HANDED cheating again. Had it not come out for 20 years – who would’ve cared. However – Tom & Bill were stupid enough to get caught AGAIN so they deserve the penalties AND public ridicule.

Jerry Rice – ur great bud – hall of famer – love u man!

  141. I remember Jerry Rice dropping all those passes during his first 3 seasons. Howard Cosell used to call him “bad hands Jerry Rice”. His drops killed the 49ers. I don’t blame him for cheating. He couldn’t catch cold, and then he turned into a great WR. Wow. Montana had already won two super bowls before they got Rice, so this revelation doesn’t effect Joe. He was doing fine already with Dwight Clark and Freddie Solomon as his WRs.

  142. billswillnevermove says: Feb 7, 2015 11:08 AM

Doesn’t really matter…….the Patriots are the biggest cheating scumbags to ever play in the NFL, hands down, and it’s really not all that close.

    ————————————-
billswillneverwin…there, fixed that name for ya. Buffalol, the AFC East doormat for how many years?

  143. Let me tell all U Tinfoil hat wearin Agent Mulders out there something. Ur definitions of “cheating” are a little ridiculous. NOBODY in the NFL “cheats”. Seriously.

Cuz if u clowns wanna go down THAT road U cld say cheating goes on with EVERY SINGLE PLAY IN AN NFL GAME.

move on with your lives people.

  144. So the Newman gloves with built in stickum are/were ok? Don’t know when those came out but I used the golf version in the 80’s. I’d be willing to bet there were plenty of receivers who used stickum to no avail!

  145. A substance equal to stickum was used on all leather “receiver’s gloves” even into this century. Even when purchased brand new they were very sticky and they were NFL approved. Re-tackifying the leather isn’t an issue to me. It really doesn’t create that much of an edge. Having worn both I can tell you the UA gloves or Nike Vapor Jets of today grip much better. Problem is Jerry had to chastise someone else. Much like most former players they still wanna live in the limelight and are quite annoying as analysts. The gloves didn’t make Jerry the player he was but his mouth is making him the idiot he is.. under pressurized balls didn’t cause the pats to wallop the Colts or beat the hawks either. So all former players and especially Jerry right now just please shut up

  146. So..in reality…. can’t help but wonder if Joe Montana knew of this. Hard to believe he didn’t.

****This is an ENORMOUS can of worms Jerry Rice OPENLY ADMITTED to doing. How this doesen’t tarnish legacies related to those “great?” 49er teams is beyond me? The most ironic part is a confirmed and self admitted CHEATER called out a team that has not been found guilty of ANYTHING regarding the PSI (not CSI……) investigation. I am stunned one man can be so nonchalant about ALL of this. He is tainted FOREVER………****

I feel sorry for all fans of the 49ers……

    DAMN…

    …………………………………………………………………………………….

Idiot, even Barry’s dad said that Jimmy Brown was the greatest running back of all time.
You know people, sports didn’t just start when ESPN did. And ESPN has turned into a joke of a network!

  148. This is what happens when people act holy. Eventually something in your past will be dug up. We know that players used stickum, no doubt they still do and I’m sure all teams fiddle with the ball PSI. Best to just keep quiet about others affairs as a public figure…or get a PFT handle and hide like the rest of us. Karma is real. Ask Warren Sapp.

  149. Hey Jerry Rice Cakes,

    SUPER BOWL XLIX
#1 AFC Team NE* beat the #1 NFC Team Seattle

*BRADY’S #4 *OFFENSE beat the Seahawks #1 DEFENSE

*BRADY & *PATS the ONLY Team in NFL History to win the Super Bowl when behind ten points or more in fourth quarter.

Super Bowl XLIX NFL Records – *BRADY 37 completions – 4th quarter sore winning drive *8-8

Most first downs passing in SB game, 21, *Tom* *Brady*

*Tom**Brady* 6 SB starting QB appearances 4 SB WINS**** 3 SB MVP***

    Love those *

  150. I’ve read a lot of people excusing Rice because the gloves today are sticky anyway. Blah blah blah. That’s not the point. When Stickum was outlawed, the league allowed gloves, but nothing could be applied to the gloves. He admitted to adding stickum, and weather it was sprayed on stuff or the old gooey stuff, it was illegal. And, he admitted to breaking those rules to gain an advantage. People have said he still had to outwork and make the play blah blah blah. Well, maybe the stickum allowed him to make those game changing one handed grabs that he was known for whereas he otherwise wouldn’t have been able to.

I also find it ironic that Rice was acquired by the 49ers in a trade with the…Patriots.

  151. The NFL needs to have a zero tolerance policy for cheating.
Take away the SB trophy, don’t give them any rings and take away the Cheaters schedule for a year.
That should send a message to the Cheaters and all other 31 teams that they should not cheat.

  152. If Bart Starr never cheated then he is better than Brady.
Tom Brady* is overrated and cannot win an SB without cheating.

  153. Zero evidence the Pats intentionally deflated anything. The only balls deflated were Edelmen’s from the tinder girl.

With Rice’s admission, 100% evidence the 49ers cheated, plus they were run by an extortionist in Debartolo that intentionally manipulated the salary cap.

Jerry’s a diva that needs attention, and now that he has it, he needs a PR rep, stat.

“Step away from the computer Jerry,” Joe Montana was overheard saying.

  154. so clear now. He just hates the Patriots because they are burying all the 49er records!

what a bad excuse for a person. to think this guy is considered “great” by some!

  155. Im 34 years old… ill go through the rest of my life saying Brady was the greatest ever and Rice (and now montana) were products of cheating.

look up bradys 4th quarter numbers in the superbowl against an all time great d

And that’s why I said get rid of all the Super Bowl rings and start everything anew. All Super Bowl winning teams have cheated. Cheated rings are useless, now that every one knows about it. Throw them away, Tom, Jerry, Rodgers, Steve, and etc.

    That’s just ridiculous!!

  157. People who have been crying about Spygate for years have always overlooked the fact that such behavior has been RAMPANT throughout the NFL throughout its history.

And if you don’t realize that then you are the one with your head in the sand. Not Pats fans.

The examples are all out there and easy to find.

The funny thing is that Rice was stupid enough to throw stones at Brady when three days before he himself had openly admitted to cheating.

Even better, Pats fans are now laughing even harder at all of you who have clung to your cheater and spygate narratives so bitterly. On top of all the other examples of other teams cheating so many times Jerry Rice just put one more right on the top of the pile.

Of course all those yelling cheater and spygate now must look in a mirror and admit they really don’t know anything about football other than what uniform they root for.

We need some of those old timers back.

  159. With Deflate Gate, and Seattle making a mind numbing dumb call at the end, yup the Pats indeed have their fourth asterisk.

    #decreaseinPSI
    #thehawkslostitmoresothanthepatswinningit

  160. And that was part of the conversation Belichick had with Goodell during the spygate investigation. He told Goodell, and I’m paraphrasing, “I’ll take the punishment you mete out, but if you make this a big deal, I will sing about everything I’ve seen everyone else do in the 30+ years that I’ve been in this league.”

Goodell couldn’t let that happen. That’s why the investigation was concluded quickly.

And we are all silly if we don’t believe that all teams and all players attempt to gain some type of edge in what is an incredibly competitive and balanced league and where your entire campaign can turn on one play in a single game.

Rice is still the GOAT. Brady may become the GOAT.

    Go Patriots!

  175. For all of you who still harp of the advantages of Spygate and the of filming signals helping the defense, don’t let the facts of that filming coaching signals is not illegal.

The Patriots were punished for filming from the wrong location. Had they filmed from the designated location, there is no SpyGate.

Filming team signals is legal, but don’t that fact change the way you think about the Patriots or Spygate.

Coaches today still cover their mouths and send out fake signals because the coaches tape from each game will still have all of the signals from every play that is provided to every team by the league for their coaching staffs to study. This is in addition to the films that each team does from the designated film location.

Hell, you can even see some of the signals and play call attempts when network TV zooms in on the sidelines during the games.

  176. Everyone was using stick em or looking for an advantage back when until it was made illegal, and even then its not like stickem is any different that the sticky gloves they have now a days. Players back then had no such option. Players were putting vaseline on their unis, and pants also.

Yes, many others are doing it, and when they get caught they lose. It is only the Patriots that don’t lose.

Ouch! Fans of another team do not like the Patriots? That’s shocking!

  200. What a terrible article. The fact is that the law regarding stickum was passed in 1981 and everyone ignored it. The league didn’t bother to enforce it. Rice joined the 49ers in 1985 and as a rookie just did what the rest of the league was doing. Once the league cracked down, everyone stopped. No big deal and not even closely related to getting an unfair advantage in inclement weather by deflating the football. Give me a break.

  201. I’m sure someone has already alluded to it in the comments, but the simple fact is this:

They HUMILIATED themselves and DESTROYED their credibility as a newspaper in the process – just to protect the Patriots (which if that were the case they wouldn’t have run the story in the first place – for which a reporter almost ruined his career having to admit that he completely got the story wrong)

So apparently Goodel and Kraft have taken control of the MEDIA as well (though the tin-foil hat wearing fans haven’t explained why the paper could run the false story in the first place – but I’m sure they have an answer for that)

  203. What everyone fails to recognize is that once a receiver has held a ball and covered it in Stickum, what happens

OHHHH – the ball ITSELF is now sticky – and thus easier to grip for the QB!

So basically to sum it up, we’re comparing a ball that’s easier to grip with a ball that’s easier to grip

(if indeed that’s the case in deflategate because it’s not looking like there was any wrong doing other than by the Colts)

  204. Dear Jerry Rice Cakes,
I want to update you on your cheating accusations. – R.G.

  205. Kraft just gave Belicheck a pet CHEETAH for winning his 4th SB with the pats.
The CHEETAH is a male and BB named him Rodger.
BB said “Can’t wait to have Rodger with me on the sidelines as I waive to the opposing team.

  206. Let’s not forget Jerry Rice was a member of the 2001 Oakland Raiders team that lost the Snow Bowl/Tuck Rule game as well. He probably has a lot of irrational hatred built up.

Pats fans are in such denial that they resort to calling those of us who are on the side of the truth, “haters.”

Attention All Haters – Here is the FACTUAL TRUTH

#1: Unsubstantiated recording of PSI by the NFL Officiating crew, not only in this game but in all other previous games, as the NFL has zero policy on proper scientific standards of recording.
    #2: Inaccurate/false leaking of information
#3: NFL Rules seek to prevent unfair advantage in a game – Rule 17 was not broken/violated in the AFC championship since it was PROVEN beyond a shadow of a doubt on national TV that ALL the footballs on both teams had zero impact on the outcome of the game.
#4: 5th Grade Science as well as college science dictates loss of air pressure as temperature drops. DUH – We all know this with pure scientific observation of our tires every winter – DUH
#5: Defamation of Character is a SERIOUS CRIME people – wake up Haters and smell the stink of your own biased self righteous bigotry.
#6: UNFAIR ADVANTAGE was given to he Seahawks via two weeks of false reporting by the NFL, news media and general public believing the reported errors and misinformation.
#7: Goodell hires high priced law firm to ONLY investigate the Patriots thus creating a smear campaign started by the colts – who by the way – had possession of the ONLY football under 2psi.
#8: Defamation of Character/ Slander is a CRIME but this is of no concern to Goodell. It is a fact that Goodell feels he can braek the rules by not doing an impartial fact gathering analysis from BOTH teams while LEAKING false info to the news media that slanders/defames the Patriots. – These the FACTS !!!

  208. One thing is sure that everyone is jealous of patriots. there are so many teams violated the rules . so why no one was making a big deal when other teams broke the rules??? but only in patriots case everybody making huge deal, it is now even prove that patriots are guilty in under defalted football so thats clear indication that they simply jealous of patriots. to me patriots are best team in NFL history…

by the way I’m not New England fan..I m just being honest…

  210. Someone needs to do a scientific study of the effects of stickum, and how it might explain the ENORMOUS disparity in what Jerry Rice accomplished versus the next incredibly talented player. There is no way to explain that kind of variation. It’s like he was super human, and it explains why he could hang around the game so long.

Seriously…Carnegie Melon….do a study on this…..please. We all want the proof that Jerry Rice is a CHEATER to be irrefutable. We want solid data to support our claim he should be EXPELLED from the Hall of Fame and put into THE HALL OF SHAME. Also, we need ASTERISKS next to all those San Francisco Super Bowls, you know….the ones they bought by violating salary cap rules. The 49er’s need to have all those wins removed from the historical records too. And draft picks,….we want draft picks forfeited.

Jerry was throwing stones when he had this in his closet? Seriously? This says something about the man….

  211. I can’t believe all the haters on here. One person said that the Patriotse had “an unfair advantage against the Seahawks”…. umm the so-called “deflate-gate” was against the COLTS in the AFC title game. And, ESPN started putting stuff out before facts were in. 1 of 12 balls showed underinflation. One ball was in the Colts possession. Hmmm. The rest were slightly, which would be weather and physics related. (And I am an engineer and taught physics)

As more and more information comes out, it looks like the Patriots in fact did NOT cheat or tamper with the balls. But these pieces of information aren’t going to all sports sources (looking at you ESPN).

Spygate? let’s see, the Patriots did NOT tape practices. That came out as a false story. What they did (and admitted to) was tape signals from the sidelines. They were fined for the game they did… it was a new rule post 2006. Belichick and the Pats paid the fines and moved on. That was it, nothing more.

The other “cheating” was the tuck rule. Which was PROPERLY applied at the time. In fact, the Patriots were victims of the tuck rule against the Jets. It wasn’t a surprise, it just got national attention because of the playoff game. This is like if the rule of oversides gets turned from 5 yrds to 10 yds. People then complain their team only got to move forward 5yrs, so still a 4th down, whereas if they got the 10yrds they’d have the first down. It’s rules of the time.

In Summary: TUCK rule = Proper call, no cheating
Spy-gate: The Patriots were fined for something that had been legal until 2007. They admitted guilt and moved on.
    Practice taping never happened

Under-inflated balls; more and more evidence is showing Patriots are innocent. So not only do the Patriots not deserve an asterisk, Rice has made a hypocrite of himself for no reason at all!

  212. This isn’t surprising, and personally I don’t think it really diminishes anything.

But, it also shows how hypocritical all of the holier-than-thou posturing is against the Patriots. There have been many, many instances of proven rules violations in the history of the NFL, but only the Patriots seem to be eternally stuck with the label of “cheaters” – even though “spygate” was a bunch of nonsense.

I will also add, regarding the issue of deflated footballs (“deflategate” is a witchhunt based on misinformation, it seems), in his autobiography, Terry Bradshaw says they deflated footballs all the time. Where are his asterisks?

“Anytime a hater states “the Patriots superbowls are tainted” just means “my team sucks” or “we lost to BB and Brady again” !!!”
    ——————————–

The Patriots SBs are in fact tainted whenever and wherever they cheated. This is coming from a Green Bay fan whose team doesn’t suck, nor did they lose to the Patriots.

Some fans simply some don’t appreciate teams which resort to cheating.

    ——————–

Here’s a revelation for you. Your QB has admitted to cheating! You are another in a long line of hypocrites.

  214. “Here’s a revelation for you. Your QB has admitted to cheating! You are another in a long line of hypocrites.”
    ——————————–

Rodgers never admitted to cheating. He said he inflated the ball as much as possible before the refs checked it, hoping they would certify the ball as being in game condition.

That’s different than the refs certifying the ball first, then a player/staff member altering the ball later.

The former is legal; the latter is cheating.

Therefore, everything you said is false.

    ————————————————-

I love how when any other player or team gets caught or openly admits to cheating its “no big deal”. When the Patriots are even accused of breaking the rules it is headlining the national news for over a week and every pundit, writer, and fan outside of NE is calling for their head on a stake.

How you think some footballs being “a tick” under 12.5 psi is a greater advantage than a team’s #1 WR having a banned substance on his gloves to help him catch the ball is beyond moronic. The Patriots actually played much better when the balls were re-inflated at halftime.

Rice is a cheater, a liar, and a hypocrite. It’s just a shame he won’t get 1/10,000th the backlash the Pats have gotten for this deflategate farce.
