Philip Rivers holding off on back surgery

Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman isn’t the only player holding off on having offseason surgery.

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers passed on playing in the Pro Bowl last month and said there was a possibility that he’d have back surgery after battling an injury that hindered his effectiveness in the latter part the season. For now, that possibility hasn’t become a reality and Rivers is doing more physical activity even though he’s not ruling out surgery entirely at this point.

“At this point, the back injury is not requiring surgery,” Rivers said on 101 KGB FM, via ESPN.com. “We’ll kind of revisit it in a month or so. But everything is improving. I’m back to my regular workouts and running around. Me and my wife played a little tennis the other day. I’ve hit the golf ball a few times, so I’m actually on the up and up. So I’m pretty excited.”

Rivers is entering the final year of his contract and General Manager Tom Telesco said at the end of the season that there were no long-term concerns about the quarterback’s health that stand in the way of an extension. That doesn’t appear to be changing, so the chances of an extension before the 2015 season seem to be pretty good.
