Wes Welker weighs walking away

Getty Images

Wes Welker may be ready to call it a career.

Welker, the Broncos receiver who’s set to become a free agent next month, has told friends and family members that he might retire, according to Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports.

That’s not a big surprise. Welker is coming off a season in which he had just 49 catches for 464 yards, his lowest numbers since he was a backup for the Dolphins in 2005. The 33-year-old Welker’s best days appear to be behind him, and realistically, he probably wouldn’t get a lot of money in free agency. Welker’s concussion history may also be looming over his decision about his future.

Welker said after the Broncos’ playoff loss to the Colts that he wasn’t sure he’d be back in Denver, and now it seems that he’s not sure if he’ll be back in the NFL, period.

If Welker is done, the record will reflect that he led the league in catches three times and finished with 890 catches for 9,822 yards and 50 touchdowns.

This Seahawk fan wishes him the best. His health is worth a whole lot more than the game is. He gave, they gave, now kick back and enjoy life. You earned it.

  5. floratiotime says: Feb 10, 2015 7:18 PM

Right. Like that’s going to happen. He’ll play if just to hit the 10,000 yard mark.

  6. Marshawn Lunch says: Feb 10, 2015 7:19 PM

He probably won’t get a lot of money in free agency?? Well, I suppose the Seahawks could take a flyer on him. After all, folks on here are always saying the Seahawks are where receivers go to die, right?

  7. Patskrieg dot com says: Feb 10, 2015 7:20 PM

As much as I cursed his name after certain incidents in the past 2 years, I hate seeing Welk go out like this. The guy was money across the middle of the field and was tough as nails. Way under paid and under respected.

  8. nyyjetsknicks says: Feb 10, 2015 7:21 PM

Hey Wes, google concussions. You’re welcome.

  9. to147 says: Feb 10, 2015 7:21 PM

He’s a hard nose competitor who excelled based on his skill but played as tough as anyone on the on the field. He has taken a lot of shots though, so it’s a call he’ll have to make.

  10. pdw3332 says: Feb 10, 2015 7:21 PM

serves him right trying to screw Belichcik over. Bill B took him from Miam where he was aspecial teamer and tuned him into the ‘slot machine’, the Wlker & agents got greedy andtried to screw Pats over, ended up leaving for eenemy team fo basically same money…..hemust feel like an idiot watching his career going down tube in Denver, while Julian Edelman emerged to be better than he ever was. Then again if Wes could have made simple catch in the Suberbowl 47, he would have had a ring

  11. ionlyrootforthewinningteam says: Feb 10, 2015 7:25 PM

Bears need a guy like him, not him specifically, wouldn’t mind seeing him, but unlikely Wes!

Leave the Patriots, watch the Patriots beat the Hawks.

  14. patsfan1820 says: Feb 10, 2015 7:27 PM

Well given how many concussions he’s suffered over the years I’d say it’s time for him to hang it up. I didn’t like the way he left the Patriots but it’s sad to see him go out like this .

  15. hockeykrishna says: Feb 10, 2015 7:29 PM

Always loved Wes, even after he left the Pats for the Donkeys.

However, he’s taken way more big hits than anyone ever should. Hope he put away some money and can now go enjoy life! At this point he’s just taking too big a risk with CTE to continue.

Have to like his luck also. Got two HOF QBs to throw to him, bet someone like Megatron or Dez Bryant would have liked that!

  16. mannyaraujo2009manny says: Feb 10, 2015 7:29 PM

  17. bigbensbathroomseed says: Feb 10, 2015 7:31 PM

For his own sake it is time to retire. He definitely re-defined the slot receiver position.

  18. rpiotr01 says: Feb 10, 2015 7:32 PM

The fact that he’s not retired already is a sign that he’s suffered too many concussions. Walk away with your health while you have it, Wes. Great career, played with HOF QBs, nothing left to prove.

  19. alltee says: Feb 10, 2015 7:32 PM

Further proof tom Brady makes evey receiver better, welker hasn’t had stats like that since he was a dolphin, hmm I wonder what the reason was he had such bad stats since being a Dolphins and Then a bronco, wondering what was between those two teams that gave him such God stats

Sadly for him belichek, the greatest coach ever, drafted a quarter back and then converted him to receiver who now plays the slot as good if not better then welker.

  20. pdw3332 says: Feb 10, 2015 7:32 PM

Patskrieg dot com, Welker made close to $30m over 6 years with Pats….as Troy brown, Edelman, even Amendola have shown that primary slot role creates #s for guys….$5m a year for a WR who was not a deep threat, or threat on sidelines and not a good blocker was not too shabby

  21. FoozieGrooler says: Feb 10, 2015 7:32 PM

Probably just wants to put some distance between himself and the NFL before the inevitable discovery of just how deep the culture of cheating within the Patriots really goes…

  22. infectorman says: Feb 10, 2015 7:33 PM

    A capital idea, Wes.

How’d that whole Denver thing work out?

    Bahahaha!!!

  23. brobroski says: Feb 10, 2015 7:34 PM

*Crys* Wes deserves to be a champion

    I wish him the best.

  26. piratefreedom says: Feb 10, 2015 7:35 PM

He can’t and shouldn’t play like he used to.

He’s not very effective anymore and I hope he’s taken care of his finances sensibly so that the type of contract he could get now would be insignificant compared to his current assets.

He was one of the great slot receivers of all time and I hope he gets to enjoy his retirement in good health.

  35. pastabelly says: Feb 10, 2015 7:47 PM

Could have been worse. Mankins was drafted right after they won the third Super Bowl and was traded right before this SB season started. Just cruel. Welker may not have been a hall of fame, but he had some outstanding years in Foxboro. I’m glad he was able to get some money. Yeah, he got greedy, but that could have been bad advice from an agent. He will go in Patriots Hall of Fame- well deserved.

  36. derpadeederpjetsyjet says: Feb 10, 2015 7:50 PM

There was a period of time when he was the best slot receiver in the game. That time has passed. Great career.

Enjoy the horse races Wes. Real football fans will always remember you fondly.

  37. oscojoe says: Feb 10, 2015 7:50 PM

Definitely Sad was the best slot receiver in the NFL for a few years. If he had not let his ego get in the way he would have had a Ring.

With the concussion the past two year’s he should retire. If only he had stay with New England he may still have a few more years to cement his legacy.

Brady knew where to throw the ball to protect his receivers so they wouldn’t be as susceptible to the crushing blows like Welker took when Manning was throwing to him.

Just one more reason why Brady vs Manning debate is over.

  38. wizardofgronk says: Feb 10, 2015 7:52 PM

As a Patriots fan, and a fan of welker, I was not sad to see him get stomped by the Seahawks in the super bowl, before watching brady to Amendola folloqed by Brady to Edelman in the 4th quarter of the super bowl on their way to ring number 4 without him. I am not alone when I say I haven’t let it go that he dropped the game winner a few years ago (no it wasn’t a “perfect” pass, but he got both hands on it and dropped it). Seeing his “replacement” make the important catch is even sweeter. Wish Wes nothing but the best in retirement, but he will be most remembered (sadly for him) for being the guy who “dropped the super bowl” and then gave Bill the finger as he rolled out on his way to denver for less money…

  39. ironmd778 says: Feb 10, 2015 7:54 PM

One of the all-time great guys in sports. Might be the toughest Patriot I’ve ever seen, right there with Edelman. For his own sake though I think he should retire immediately. I think he has a tough future ahead of him physically and mentally as it is, no reason to add another year of hits to that head and body.

  40. promickey says: Feb 10, 2015 7:54 PM

Many fans may not remember how good Wes Welker was with the Dolphins before the GM at the time Randy Mueller traded him to New England.

He was a first down machine. When the Dolphins had 3rd and 7; There was Welker catching another
first down. Good luck Wes what ever you decide!

  41. carloswlassiter says: Feb 10, 2015 7:59 PM

Rex Ryan will pick him up.

  42. paychrisjohnson28 says: Feb 10, 2015 8:01 PM

Welker needs 110 catches for 1,000 career and 188 yards to get to 10,000 career yards…. Welker will play this season next for someone …need to hit those milestones to be considered among the all time greats…

  43. truths4all says: Feb 10, 2015 8:01 PM

Retiring is probably the best for this concussion prone player.

  44. tb12bestqbevah says: Feb 10, 2015 8:01 PM

  45. matthoover4 says: Feb 10, 2015 8:02 PM

He’ll sign with another contender at the end of training camp. Too close to 1,000 catches and 10,000 yards. Hard to hit the 1,000 balls caught mark, but he can get over 10,000 as a role player and help a team.

  46. kindbass says: Feb 10, 2015 8:03 PM

And everyone ripped Belichick and the Pats for not overpaying him like the Broncos…

  47. ahostiletakeover says: Feb 10, 2015 8:03 PM

  48. kindbass says: Feb 10, 2015 8:04 PM

Nevermind, forgot he actually took less money to leave. Ouch…

  49. 8oneanddones says: Feb 10, 2015 8:10 PM

In 2011 he had about 900 receiving yards after the first six games, including a 99 yard TD catch. It’s a shame most people don’t remember that part of the season.

You really gotta wonder how many years he would have left if he stayed in NE. Brady had a magical connection with him, those two were very special to watch. From a production stand point very lil was missed when he left, and the way he left was wrong, but that’s football. I’ll always have a ton of respect for him, and I’ll cringe in ten years when the 30/30 on him comes up.

  53. fordmandalay says: Feb 10, 2015 8:18 PM

If Manning comes back with his noodle-arm, Wes knows that even if he only gets 50 catches, 48 of them will be soft ballistic lobs that hang him out to dry to attract monster hits. He can’t survive that, better if he protects his health and walks away now.

  54. smarterfootball says: Feb 10, 2015 8:19 PM

Loved it when he had fun with Rex Ryan, using every “foot” cliche known to man at a press conference (professionally straight-faced, by the way). Sgt. Belichick didn’t see the humor in it and put him in a timeout for the 1st series of the playoff game.

Sexy Rexy would have reacted differently, making him the star of his next fetish video.

  74. Ghost Rat says: Feb 10, 2015 9:19 PM

Troy Brown helped create the slot receiver position in New England, and Wes raised it to a higher level. He ended up leaving New England and Julian Edelman is a more versatile receiver who raised the bar even higher. And Julian got the ring with a game winning touchdown reception.

I loved Wes in New England, but unfortunately he showed that he hasn’t quite grown up yet. I wish him well in post-football life and am glad I will be able to pull my Welker jersey out of retirement.

Americans are so angry. The guy didn’t injure himself, it happened as he was doing his job. The Pats didn’t want to pay him what he felt he was worth, so he moved on. He made the check he wanted and now if he chooses, he can retire. I’d like him get to 10k and maybe more, but if he wants to call it quits in his 30s and find some broadcasting job, so be it.

  84. annes22 says: Feb 10, 2015 9:44 PM

He bailed Mr Brady out many times in New England. All the concussions didn’t help, but he deserves better on here. 86. jrs1972 says: Feb 10, 2015 9:56 PM

  87. cheezwhiz1 says: Feb 10, 2015 9:57 PM

When the Pats acquired him, everyone told me I was crazy when I said he was going to make a bigger impact on the team than Moss. You really had to see him in Miami often enough to see how quick he was in traffic.

I wish he had gotten a ring somewhere. He was a fearless and unselfish player until the hard hits started to take their toll. Even then he still gave his all.

Maybe Rex Ryan can put his best foot forward in Buffalo and try to acquire him and step up to the plate. That would keep the Patriots and Jets on their toes.

Edelman younger, stronger and just as agile.

Problem for Welker was listening to his greedy agent. The more $$$ a player makes the more $$$ the agent makes.

How did your team do this year? I would guess not very well. Tell us what it’s like to be a fan of a team that is nothing more than a hot stinky flaming pile of bovine excrement. It’s been so long for the NFL’s Greatest Dynasty and Super Bowl champions that we forgot what it’s like.

Aaahhh it’s SO NICE to cheer for winners, not like you losers. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    This is a “no brainer”

  100. justintuckrule says: Feb 10, 2015 10:35 PM

We’ll take him for a minute as insurance for Cruz. With OBJ outside, welker will never get hit.

  101. edelmanfanclub says: Feb 10, 2015 11:09 PM

Its over man. Wes, You have nothing left to prove, you were great receiver for many years. All good things must come to an end. I wish you could have gotten a ring, but that doesn’t define you as a player.

  102. kam187 says: Feb 10, 2015 11:17 PM

He will return to NE as a role player

  103. tattooit says: Feb 10, 2015 11:25 PM

Too many head shots and too much ecstasy can’t be good for the brain. Time to pack it in boss.

All of you Patriot fans on here dissing this dude should be ashamed of yourselves. Pathetic. This is why everyone hates your team, it’s not the winning, it’s the insufferable fans. Why is EVERYTHING a chance to point out how smart Bill is or how great Brady is?? Are you really that insecure?

  104. immafubared says: Feb 10, 2015 11:26 PM

Tough SOB. He did the hard work, those passes over the middle where you get creamed. Great career and a gamer.
    Wish him the best

  105. babygaga19 says: Feb 10, 2015 11:28 PM

Wes, hang it up baby. You’re done!

  106. theandy59 says: Feb 10, 2015 11:31 PM

I remember Belichick saying when asked what it was about Welker that he liked, “I don’t know, every time we played them nobody could cover him.” I also remember Gil Brandt commenting that while he liked the Welker signing, “….he’s not the kind of guy that wins championships for you.” Sadly, Gil was correct.

  107. patriotinvasion says: Feb 10, 2015 11:46 PM

Edelman has eliminated all memory of Welker now in New England with his Super Bowl performance. Despite all the catches Wes made for the Pats he will forever be remembered for the one he didn’t catch in Super Bowl XLVI. Ball hit both palms and if he catches that the Pats almost surely win that game. Will never forget it, but glad the Pats got that elusive 4th ring in the end.

  108. longislandblitz says: Feb 10, 2015 11:50 PM

Mr. Welker the Oakland Raiders want to speak with you…they hear your nearing retirement and want to offer you a 6 year deal worth 72 million

  109. kate773 says: Feb 11, 2015 12:17 AM

I wish Wes had gotten a ring. But between all the hits he took in NE and in DEN, I really do worry about his health.

It is a sad way to go out, especially after the sacrifices he made to his body. He deserves to have something to show for it. Unfortunately more players flame out than go in a blaze of glory. I truly hope he is in a position financially to retire as it’s clear as an outside observer that it’s time. Both from a health and skill standpoint.

If he does hang ’em up, I wish him the best. He’d be a good commentator.

  110. raiderlyfe510 says: Feb 11, 2015 12:20 AM

If Wes Welker didn’t drop that pass in the Superbowl against the NYG Tom Brady would have 5 Lombardi’s. Giselle was pissed too. She was like man is her husband supposed to catch his own passes too?

One of the funniest super bowl memories of all time.

  111. varangia says: Feb 11, 2015 12:38 AM

Brady threw a bad pass to Welker in that SB. Good or half decent pass and the game is over. Big admirer of Brady but I have to call it accurately.

  112. RE LEE says: Feb 11, 2015 1:09 AM

We’ll always love you here in New England. Maybe you could still retire as a Patriot.

  113. beckiduckworth says: Feb 11, 2015 3:46 AM

Gonna miss this guy, been a Broncos fan since I moved here.

  114. vaughnjoe says: Feb 11, 2015 4:14 AM

He had a great career for a UFA. Things started to go south when he got busted for illegal substance. (See him at the Kentucky Derby) The guy was high as a kite. Been a good run Welker. Call it a career….

  115. themadfarter says: Feb 11, 2015 4:46 AM

Why no mention of PEDs?? Welker was a beast, made it to the top of the league as far as WRs go. Probably knows its too hard to make it there again, especially without the greenies!!!

  116. insider7 says: Feb 11, 2015 4:48 AM

In the end, The Hooded One prevailed over Welker in this one as well. Welker took equal money to play with Manning in Denver, to “stick it to Bill”. Welker thought that he was going to win a Super Bowl there. Nope.

BB and TB12 are now reigning Super Bowl champs, with a winning record over the Manning/Welker Broncos since Welker left the Patriots.

    Once again, BB prevails.

  117. ohand16 says: Feb 11, 2015 5:00 AM

I thought he was retired already based on last season

  118. carloswlassiter says: Feb 11, 2015 5:56 AM

Blame Welker’s agents for the rift with the Patriots.

They had an inflated sense of his value, declined the Patriots contract offer, tested free agency and ended up taking less money to go to Denver.

  119. carloswlassiter says: Feb 11, 2015 5:59 AM

    campcouch says: Feb 10, 2015 9:39 PM

Actually, he declined the Patriots contract offer and ended up taking less $ in Denver.

  120. vcupats says: Feb 11, 2015 6:27 AM

Brady & Peyton without Welker in the Super Bowl: 5-1, 25.0 PPG

Brady & Peyton with Welker in the Super Bowl: 0-3, 13.0 PPG

Both QB’s hope he returns… with an NFC contender.

  121. tincansailor981 says: Feb 11, 2015 6:50 AM

He’s had a good career, but with his history of concussions, his size and age, walking away now is probably best for his long term health.

  125. concrete998 says: Feb 11, 2015 8:01 AM

Great player for the Patriots. Belichick said he picked him up because he was tired of getting burned by him. Brady kept him out of harms way for the most part and they had a great chemistry. It’s too bad Peyton doesn’t have the same zip on the ball that Brady has. The Superbowl pass/ drop was equally Brady and Welkers fault… not a great toss but catchable.
I wish him the best, pound for pound one of the toughest players ever. Only game jersey I ever purchased was a Patriots number 83 for my Grandaughter.

  126. sec328onroute1 says: Feb 11, 2015 8:25 AM

If he cheated like Jerry Rice* and used stickum, the Patriots would have at least one more Super Bowl championship. 🙂

Best of luck to Welker. He is a true baller and doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone.

  127. warwiac says: Feb 11, 2015 8:38 AM

how many superbowls would the patriots have if he hadn’t dropped so many critical passes? difference this year, edelman and amendola didn’t.

  128. tommikula says: Feb 11, 2015 8:46 AM

Manning ruined him just like he ruined Austin Collie

  129. rob471773 says: Feb 11, 2015 8:46 AM

Wes Welker is an all time Patriot great it’s a shame he never got a ring in New England.

And please everyone needs to stop with the Edelman is better than Welker argument.

Welker in his prime is a much better overall player than Edelman.

  130. justintuckrule says: Feb 11, 2015 9:02 AM

You pats fans are insufferable. Thank god we own you. Ever think of blaming Christ Brady for having happy feet on that play and just missing him? Of course not. Fyi, Edelman wouldn’t have even gotten a hand on that overthrown ball. He had “a” good year but be real… Edelman couldn’t hold welkers jock those years.

Better check your facts. A before Welker’s last season in NE they offered him a 2 year deal well over what Denver gave him. And the year he went to Denver he took LESS money to go to there than what he was offered by NE (even though that offer was lower than what they offered him a year earlier)?

Welker’s agent screwed him by overestimating his value on the open market.

There were only a few offenses out there where Welker would have been a #1 or a #2 receiver. Wes was a great talent, but his home was the slot receiver spot. Not many teams make that position a primary target, so there weren’t a lot of suitors for him when he was an FA.

Regardless, watching Welker play during his years in NE was a lot of fun.

  132. lolatpatshaters says: Feb 11, 2015 10:11 AM

It doesn’t matter whether it was a perfect throw or not (it was not, but nowhere near the bad throw that some would like to think it is).

Fact: The ball was catchable and he should have had it. Can’t dispute what is fact.

    There is no argument here.

  133. lolatpatshaters says: Feb 11, 2015 10:12 AM

Welker was always a good foot soldier.

  135. gisellichek says: Feb 11, 2015 10:33 AM

I betcha… if BB offered him a deal to come back and try out (just to see what he has left) … he would…

Having him , Edelman and Amendola on the field at the same time would be a match-up nightmare… but I know that ship has sailed…

    Happy Retirement Wes…

  136. DennisT says: Feb 11, 2015 10:43 AM

Welker was a GREAT player for Patriots. Don’t forget all the years our offense ran through him! He was gritty, tough as nails and determined. That said, obviously he benefited from playing with Brady and I think he made huge mistake turning down Pats offer to him, because he ended up getting less on FA market.

Sounds like it may be time to hang them up for Wes.

Regarding the catch it was not a perfect pass, and for good reason. The Giants safety was patrolling the middle of the field. Brady put it right where he wanted it, where the safety would have no shot to pick it off. He has to make that catch in that spot.

  137. 23rdusernameused says: Feb 11, 2015 11:04 AM

    retire @ 33…
    NIIIIIICE!!

  138. elyasm says: Feb 11, 2015 11:41 AM

Please come home to New England Wes! I still think he has enough left in the tank to contribute and Tom won’t lead him over the middle to get murdered. Even if he’s only the latest member of the Belichick Home for Aging Stars, he deserves one last year in a place where he is appreciated and celebrated, not stuck in some roster depth purgatory.

  139. weepingjebus says: Feb 11, 2015 11:47 AM

The Giants shouldn’t have even been in those SBs since they cheated the draft to get Eli Manning in the first place and routinely fake cramps after a sideline coach gives the “swim” signal.

    NJ Giants**

  140. dirtyferret says: Feb 11, 2015 12:32 PM

In his prime Wes was one of the best slot receivers to ever play the game as well as a good punt returner. He even made a FG for Miami against the Pats.

No need to risk further damage to his health though, Wes may not have a ring but has nothing to prove either. I can’t blame the guy for taking more money (everyone here would do the same thing). Obviously it did not turn out the way he or Denver envisioned things.

I’m sure the Pats will have a Wes Walker day for him.

  141. tigerlilac says: Feb 11, 2015 12:33 PM

I can see Wes sitting out, staying healthy, and then coming back to help a team with Super Bowl aspirations who have an excellent QB but lost a key receiver. Brady, Manning, and Rogers would all make good use of Wes with very little lead time.

Why should he put himself through a whole season of betting his bell rung?

The Patriots have a history of bringing in veteran receivers during the season that had played for them previously.

  142. tigerlilac says: Feb 11, 2015 12:35 PM

Next to Julian Edelman, Wes is the toughest guy I ever watched play the game and he has done it a lot longer than Juliian.

  143. tigerlilac says: Feb 11, 2015 12:51 PM

“A wide open Welker – Balls hit him right IN THE HANDS and drops it. Choke play that cost the Patriots they’re undefeated season and Super Bowl.”

If you are going to denigrate one of the greatest Patriots receivers in their history get your bs facts right. Welker didn’t drop the ball in the undefeated season (2007, played in 2008). He dropped (not an easy catch) one in the 2011 Super Bowl (played in 2012).

I still have my Patriots No. 83 Welker jersey hanging in my closet. Just couldn’t throw it out, even though I think he made a huge mistake leaving NE, especially the way in which he left. In the Anything Can Happen world, maybe BB will feel bad for him and sign him to a minimum salary contract long enough for Welker to get his 10,000 yards. With Brady, it would probably only be two or three games.

  147. mellimac says: Feb 14, 2015 12:46 AM

Welker made all those short dude fans believe they could be a NFL star. He was an average Joe who soared. There were games where Wes was the only option for almost a whole game, and he caught them. Little dunk passes…I wish I could remember that one game (and I never got my bell rung like he has).

As for retiring, I’d like to see him hit 10,000yds, but quite frankly, he is a CTE candidate already, and perhaps it is time to accept that. No sense making it official. I’d like to see him enjoy his money into retirement age (65+). Besides, he’d make a great colour commentator, if he keeps his head. He can deadpan with the best of them.
