Butler still has to pay for “free” truck

Butler

The folks at Chevy helped Tom Brady avoid a $21,000 tax bill by agreeing to award the truck that goes with winning the Super Bowl MVP award directly to defensive hero Malcolm Butler. With Butler now catching the keys to the oversized car, Uncle Sam will be intercepting some cash directly from Butler.

The amount, as explained by Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, depends on Butler’s other income for 2015. If he makes the 53-man roster in New England, he’ll be in the top tax bracket. Which means that getting a $35,000 vehicle for free would result in $15,000 in taxes.

So, in other words, Butler would be getting a truck he may not have wanted to buy for any amount of money for $20,000 below sticker.

Still, Butler seems to be happy with that. Officially given the vehicle on Tuesday, Butler was asked if he’s a “truck guy.”

“I think I am now,” Butler said, per Reiss.

We’ll see if Butler still feels that way after realizing that he’ll still have to fork over 15 large, or whether he’ll eventually be inclined to trade it for screen legend Anthony Quinn’s undershirt.
