The Panthers didn’t have much money to spend in free agency last year.

But what they did spend, they didn’t spend well.

They started the process of cutting bait today by releasing veteran safety Thomas DeCoud.

DeCoud lost a starting job to fourth-rounder Tre Boston midway through last season, so the move is not a surprise.

But what’s amazing is how little General Manager Dave Gettleman found while dumpster-diving last year.

Only veteran safety Roman Harper held onto a starting job, while other signings such as Antoine Cason, Jerricho Cotchery, Jason Avant, Tiquan Underwood and Mike McNeill are either already gone or underwhelming.

Gettleman has promised he has more cap space to work with this offseason, and perhaps moving up in class from the dollar store will help the results.
