Adrian Peterson hasn’t asked for a trade, yet

Peterson Getty Images

The Vikings want running back Adrian Peterson to return.  Peterson, despite recently saying “of course” he wants to play for the Vikings, has serious misgivings.

Those two schools of thought have not yet collided.

Josina Anderson of ESPN reports that Peterson has not asked for a trade to the Cowboys and has not had any conversations with G.M. Rick Spielman.

Both Spielman and coach Mike Zimmer appeared on PFT Live from the Scouting Combine, and both explained that they haven’t spoken to Peterson, because they currently can’t.  Once he’s reinstated from suspension, they will.

Zimmer told PFT Live in January and again last month that, if Peterson is dead set against playing for the Vikings, the team would work something out.  But Zimmer also has said he believes he’s a good recruiter.

During his most recent visit to PFT Live, I asked Zimmer to pretend I’m Adrian Peterson and to make the case for not eventually requesting a trade.  Zimmer did, even calling me Adrian in the process.  If anyone (including the real Adrian) is interested in what Zimmer had to say, click the video below.

If Zimmer ultimately can’t persuade Peterson to stay, the question then becomes where he’d be traded.  The Cowboys are an obvious destination, given that Peterson has mused about eventually playing for one of the two teams located in his home state of Texas.  For now, though, that request hasn’t been made.

He obviously is orchestrating his way out. Make a trade, get the draft pick and move on…

  2. TeamBalco says: Feb 22, 2015 11:16 AM

Cowboys can handle this the easy way. Give Dez the longterm money, FT Murray, trade Murray for AP. Then FT AP next year.

  3. jermainewiggins says: Feb 22, 2015 11:17 AM

If he does want to be traded then enough with this dude…. talk about a lack of loyalty when this team has supported you every step of the way and even paid you your full salary and not to mention the team has not even brought up restructuring his 2015 cap his of about 15 mil. He is the one that put himself in this position but he’s a little mad because he got paid his full salary to do nothing? Straight up selfish

If AD “requests” a trade, the Vikes should request that he fulfill his contract. I don’t think the guy wants to hold out & miss more snaps; it’s not like he’s been working on his Ph.D in the off-season…..

  6. DaveKShape says: Feb 22, 2015 11:21 AM

Peterson certainly is shaping up to be quite the malcontent. He needs to be careful; the league has kept moving beyond guys like him in the past and it’ll happen to him too.

Peterson has always been a me first guy, goals are most yards ever,
instead of winning a super bowl. Farve should have been in victory formation in 2009, if it was not for the fumbling clown.

    RETIRE

  12. xemper0rx says: Feb 22, 2015 11:35 AM

The Vikes have all the leverage and would need a boat load of draft picks to send him off. If he holds out/retires they don’t lose anything. There are not many RBs that are even as close as good as AP. Not to mention he has fresh legs and is 100% healthy that he didn’t play all year. Dude tore his ACL and the next season rushed for 2k yards. He had a year off and is fresh now. He has a few more great seasons in him.

  13. keyspirate says: Feb 22, 2015 11:36 AM

As a Vikings fan I’ve been open to welcoming him back and moving on, but this is getting old. He’s coming off like a spoiled child. It’s possible or even probable that this might just be posturing on his part to warn the team not to ask him for major concessions.

  14. ebr362 says: Feb 22, 2015 11:37 AM

Miami should trade Wallace for AP straight up!

  15. conormacleod says: Feb 22, 2015 11:38 AM

So, the press is just going to ignore the salary cap and muse about him going to the Cowboys? Every article on the Cowboys talks about how they can’t keep Dez and Murray, but suddenly AP is going to the Cowboys!!

Fine. He really wants to be traded? Cleveland. They have money and need him. I think he plays for the Vikings, but if not, I trade him to a team that will guarantee he finishes his career in a wasteland.

  16. theallegedone says: Feb 22, 2015 11:41 AM

The Vikings went from 5 wins to 7 wins WITHOUT Adrian Peterson. He can’t be reinstated until mid April at the earliest. That’s deep into free agency. By that time the Cowboys will be forced to sign DeMarco Murray. This means that the Vikings trading Peterson to Dallas for picks isn’t an option. The Vikings will want at a minimum one 1st round pick AND DeMarco Murray. Honestly, I think that would be a good trade for both. Don’t talk to me about Peterson being older. He’s a machine, not your average running back. And then the Vikings would have a running back who by then would be under at least a 4 year deal. Win win for both.

  17. maestro1899 says: Feb 22, 2015 11:41 AM

The Cowboys have NO INTEREST in AP.

The only reason they would let DeMarco Murray walk is to save money at the position by drafting someone who is making the rookie scale salary, which is significantly cheaper than what DeMarco is going to get paid.

They are not going to let DeMarco walk only to pay a more expensive and older RB with a lot more wear-n-tear on his body.

    It makes no sense.

  18. ravenswhat says: Feb 22, 2015 11:42 AM

I love how AP is trying to frame this as the management doing him wrong. YOU BEAT A KID UNTIL HIS BUTTOCKS BLED.

  20. rosstuckershair says: Feb 22, 2015 11:44 AM

I can see AP wanting to go somewhere with an actual franchise QB….

And maybe he might have a great chance in the playoffs. He might even play a team that defensively does not attempt to disguise Cover 0 (for the second straight week) in a championship game in primetime…and advance even further in the playoffs…

Hmmm,..The Vikings should consider adding a 2016 conditional pick based on 2015 production for Adrian for this very reason…

  21. beavertonsteve says: Feb 22, 2015 11:45 AM

Plus, I would be wary of any player who spent significant time with the Minnesota Vikings. Putting on that purple jersey does strange things to one’s character and moral values.

  23. squishman says: Feb 22, 2015 11:46 AM

I have been bitter about the dirty dirty Saints, but lets be frank: Adrian did lose that game for us and kept us from the Super Bowl. No denying that.
I have been in AP’s corner for the most part because I believe in redemption and I believe people can change. By his recent comments, he shows that he has not changed. Now I hope we trade him.
    AMF Adrian.

    ——-

I was wondering the same thing. The only way this happens is if the Vikes re-structure him first or just cut him. AP is worth some money, but when the FA RBs last season got an average of 3.5Mil/year, he is still way too big of a cap hit when you can draft a far cheaper alternative. Nobody is going to trade a boatload of picks AND take a 15Mil cap hit for it. That’s just not how things work in the NFL anymore.

How about the media waits until Peterson actually asks to be traded or cut or anything besides trying to start some contest among all the pundits trying to act like they have some kind of fresh scoop which is pure conjecture.

None of this matters until the people in power can actually talk face to face legally.

  37. huskersrock1 says: Feb 22, 2015 12:27 PM

Peterson isn’t worth his salary, you can pay three solid players for what you are paying him and still get good production out of a cheap 3rd round draft pick. In a salary cap environment it is not about having the best player at a position, it is about bringing in cost effective talent that will allow you to field a complete team.

Peterson is not like your average running back. He still can bust through like he is 24. Vikings will regret letting him go but it doesn’t look like they have much choice. They have to trade him. They cannot cut him. They have to get something for him like they did for Harvin and moss.

  49. wellthatsinteresting says: Feb 22, 2015 12:48 PM

We are at that point with Adrian Peterson i think. The Vikings now have to try a play the spin game in an attempt to try and get some sort of trade value. The Vikings are the real victim in all of this. They paid Peterson to sit out all of the season with full pay, When it was Peterson who was in the wrong in the first place. Now the team will be lucky to get any sort of fair compensation because the NFL wont even reinstate Peterson Until April 15th When most teams have already made most of their free agent choices heading into the draft. Good luck to you Rick Speilman. But i say dump him as soon as you can and get what you can get and call it a day with AP

And what does he do? Opens up the entire issue again.

Now moving on will have a different meaning. Yeah, AP, I guess it is time for us all to move on. Hope you can end up in Texas and be content. Heaven knows you can’t be content making $15M a year from a forgiving fan base here.

Pros and Cons of keeping AP:

    Pros:
    – Freakish running back
    – Gives the Vikings an elite running game

    Cons:
    – Doesn’t want to be here
    – Beats up 4-year-olds
    – For 80% less money, you could get a back who has about 10% less talent

    I say let him go.

  73. eazye1187 says: Feb 22, 2015 1:56 PM

Only the people on this comment thread would make such a dumb trade.

  74. whatjusthapped says: Feb 22, 2015 1:57 PM

Trades are rare in today’s NFL, mainly because you have to fit the contract into your salary cap? Now take a quick look around the NFL and ask yourself three questions,

    1) are there any teams that have signed a $12 mil contract with any of their running backs? ($15 million hit to the Viking’s salary cap)

    2) Among the highest paid RB’s on any of the 32 rosters, how many of them are over age 30?

    3) Bonus question, do any of the highest paid RB’s have character issues, say for example, beat bloody 4 year old children?

That’s why Peterson will never be traded, its impossible. About the same odds as the Vikings winning a Superbowl anytime soon.

  75. leatherface2012 says: Feb 22, 2015 2:01 PM

AP is right to never play another down with the Vikings on principal alone.

  79. wtfchiefs says: Feb 22, 2015 2:24 PM

Only the NFL would allow a child abuser to have all the leverage and have a coach beg for him to stay. This low life shoved leaves in his 4 year old kids mouth and beat him with a stick, lacerating the kid in numerous places. It wasn’t a simple spanking as so many fanboys in denial will tell you.
I’m sure he’ll return next year though, and play very well. And I’m also sure the media will be sure to prop him up on a pedestal as some great comeback story, but in my opinion Peterson is trash and shouldn’t be playing and his children are in danger living with him.

  80. fatcamper says: Feb 22, 2015 2:49 PM

Dallas just signed Herschel Walker out of retirement to complete the deal. Straight-up, Herschel for AP.

Guy severely beats several of his many fatherless children, receives undeserved support from many MN fans, then he turns his back on the team and fans that stood by him in his darkest hour.

Now I understand why Green Bay fans mock Vikings fans.

  82. ppc50 says: Feb 22, 2015 3:20 PM

AP is playing the waiting game. If Dallas doesn’t do a deal with Murray, he will want out of Minn. and be traded to Dallas – even for less money. If Dallas sticks with Murray with a long term deal, AP will say that he trusts Zimmer, the Vikings organization and will stay.

  83. purpleguy says: Feb 22, 2015 3:38 PM

Hey, if the guy doesn’t want to be here because he feels the Vikings did what every other team would have done after he beat his kid, then it’s further evidence he hasn’t looked in the mirror and doesn’t get it. If that is all true, let him go and say good riddance.

If he admits fault and just doesn’t want to take the pay cut, that’s another thing.

Now we all know why the Vikes have done all this public “we want AP” media blitz mumbo jumbo.

  84. wafflestomp says: Feb 22, 2015 4:07 PM

Ha Ha Ha!!! Of course he wants trade.
    Worst franchise in sports.

And you know what’s truly pathetic?
It’s the fact so many of the purple paste eaters were more than willing to sell out their integrity and moral values clamoring for the reinstatement of this child abuser.

And for what? Eight, maybe nine wins last season. Not a great return for selling your souls.
And now he doesn’t even want you or your sorry team. Priceless!!!

This is great. This is worth all the love boats, wizzinators, dress wearing coaches, collapsed stadiums and never ending losing seasons put together.
I honestly can’t stop laughing at the butt hurt looks on all of your faces.

I’ve been trying to tell you this loser is not worth standing behind.
What message does this send to your own children when you don your Peterson jersey every Sunday and scream at the NFL for justice. Justice?
Are you just that dumb or are you trying to signal a warning to your own kids?
    Sad, pathetic and sad.

Looks like AP needs a taste of his own medicine since he’s acting like a spoiled child.

Couldn’t be more obvious he’s posturing to get released and join DAL. MIN has been completely supportive of him, welcomed him with welcome arms and he has hurt feelings after getting paid for the stuff he’s pulled.

I guess he really wants to play to DAL cause he would be looking at a massive pay cut. I used to like AP, but the way he’s behaving is absurd.

I have been bitter about the dirty dirty Saints, but lets be frank: Adrian did lose that game for us and kept us from the Super Bowl. No denying that.

How do you figure? We had five turnovers in that game: three fumbles (Harvin, Berrian, Favre) and two INTs. AP fumbled twice in that game but both were recovered by the Vikings. AP had 122 yards rushing and three TDs.

All the people that say the Vikings won’t get anything meaningful for Peterson might be right.

All the people that say the Vikings will get a truckload of picks might be right as well.

It all comes down to perceived value. What another team perceives to be the value of Peterson will truly tell the tail.

Someone as arrogant as Jerrah could easily do a “reverse Walker” trade just to keep his name in the headlines, especially if Peterson goes beast mode and trashes the rushing record.

No matter who gets Peterson in the long run, be it the Vikings, Dallas or whoever, I still say there are defensive players who are just waiting with baited breath to take out Peterson’s knees for what he did to his son.

  97. themeccalambeaufield says: Feb 22, 2015 5:41 PM

Besides the PR nightmare of explaining to the public why chose to acquire a absentee child abusing father it would make even less sense to pick up such a foolish contract which pays him 2x what the next closest back usually makes. Those 2 things alone has a team like the vikings mired in futility for decades. Why would another GM commit job suicide like spieladope has done?

  98. wafflestomp says: Feb 22, 2015 5:46 PM

    Cocormacleod, Randall Woodfield? Really?

You are digging so far back I had to look it up.
Randall Woodfield was a Portland State wide receiver drafted in 1974 by the Packers in the 17th round. Are you serious?

He never played for the Packers because he never stuck with the team past training camp.
All of his most egregious crimes took place on the west coast after his supposed “career” in Green Bay.
    Let it g0 Dude.

Chmura was released by the Packers shortly after the rape allegations came to light.
The allegations he would later be acquitted from.

You seem to forget about Green Bay’s most notorious law breaker, Mossy Cade.

After trading a 1st and a 5th round pick to the Chargers, the Pack installed Cade into their starting secondary.

After a year and a half of mixed results on the field, Cade was charged with sexual assault of his own aunt and was eventually cut by Green Bay.

After serving 15 months of a prison sentence he was promptly signed by the Minnesota Vikings.

  99. sonofad says: Feb 22, 2015 5:49 PM

I should have guessed you’d miss the entire point.

The fact is Minnesota signed Cade with a full understanding of all his misdeeds.
It doesn’t matter that Cade never played a down for them The point is moot.

Why should the Packers be chastised by the fact they drafted a player (Woodfield) that would go on to commit terrible crimes after spending what amounts to a cup of coffee in Green Bay.

The Vikings signed him with eyes wide open. Public outcry made sure he would never play for the team.
It’s too bad it wasn’t like that today.

“Schism” is like 5 years ago in the media talking about Brad Childress.

It’s like I have a cheese-head friend who witnessed the biggest choke in football by letting the Seahawks win the game leading directly to the Super Bowl. His stomach dropped and felt like he could lose a battle too by either orifice or both at the same time.

Jerry Jones recently went on record regarding their five year window with Tony Romo. It is also known that he doesn’t want to pay Demarco Murray.

Peterson would give the Cowboys a player who will produce early in that five year window, but he is under contract with the Vikings for the next three years, and the Vikings have honoured expensive contracts before – Jared Allen.

The only way Peterson suits up for the Cowboys this season is if they offer their first round choice this year. Peterson would probably have to agree to a reduction in salary with the Cowboys, but that should be a formality if he is serious about playing for Dallas.

Some might say that a first round pick for a running back – let alone a thirty year old one by the start of the season – is way too much. Thing is, Peterson is a once in a generation player, and getting him now would be the sort of ‘all in’ approach we’ve seen Jerry Jones do before.

The Vikings didn’t beat their son with a switch until his scrotum bled, that was all you AD. I’m surprised you didn’t drop the switch like you fumbled away the NFC Championship. The only one responsible for what happened to Adrian Peterson last season was himself.

  110. vikesfansteve says: Feb 22, 2015 9:28 PM

Of course Pete Morelli and the corrupt refs handed the Saints the win but they wouldn’t have had the opportunity if AD hadn’t fumbled at the 6 yd line with a hole so wide he could have drove a Mack truck untouched into the end zone. That’s Petersons 3rd fumble that was officially charged to Favre because it was a handoff but it was AD all the way. It’s embarassing to me when other Vikings fans regurgitate Stats from Wiki or ESPN and say Peterson only had 2 fumbles. Anyone who actually watched the game and understands football knows it was 3 and knows that one was the back breaker because that TD would have sealed a win. So that guy was right. Peterson did fumble away his chance at a Super Bowl, so his behavior recently towards the Vikings is puzzling to say the least.

AP is my favorite player of all time; he’s the best viking of my lifetime; he immediately makes our team exponentially better; I disagree and think he’s as unselfish as anyone in the game. I think every vikes fan saying “trade him,” etc., is simply using cognitive dissonance.

All I’ve ever wanted was to see AP with a real QB. We got it for 1 year and look what happened? Now we have a future at QB for first time in my life (aside from healthy Daunte), and now we want to trade him? BS vikes fans!

Do anything possible to keep him on this team.

With that said, I am also a dad. I think what he did was idiotic, but not pure malfeasance. Paid the price and will continue to do so for the rest of his life. The situation continues to deteriorate as the relationship becomes more acrimonious. We’ll see where things are at in mid April when Peterson can apply for reinstatement, unless this thing blows up before then…
