Reports: Bills talking deal with Josh McCown

AP

The Bills are reportedly trying to add Josh McCown to their quarterback ranks.

The Associated Press reports Buffalo is trying to work out a contract with the 35-year-old McCown, who’s regarded as one of the top passers available in free agency.

According to Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News, a Bills agreement with McCown could occur Friday, an unnamed NFL source told the newspaper.

McCown started 11 games for the Buccaneers in 2014, completing 184-of-327 passes for 2,206 yards with 11 touchdown passes. However, he committed 18 turnovers. The Buccaneers released him on February 11.

McCown visited the Bills not long after being cut by Tampa Bay. He visited the Browns on Wednesday and Thursday but did not strike a deal with Cleveland.

Rex probably thinks a QB with 11 touchdown passes and 18 turnovers ranks pretty high.

  2. doe22us says: Feb 26, 2015 2:25 PM

Lol, ok.. men the landscape for QB’s is quite bad, good luck Buffalo and yeah Spiller is gone.

  3. rodvmunchiii says: Feb 26, 2015 2:27 PM

McCown was terrible with the Bucs… like he was so bad the Bucs purposely played him – and not Glennon – to ensure the team would get the top pick in the draft.

Anywho if he’s there as a mentor of EJ or something, this could be a good move… but if they expect him to play… ugh.

  4. weepingjebus says: Feb 26, 2015 2:27 PM

    Sure.

  5. bassplucker says: Feb 26, 2015 2:29 PM

He would be expected to mentor/tutor EJ Manual there, vs Johnny Foosball in Cleveland. If those were the two teams it came down to, Buffalo is clearly the better situation by all criteria.

  6. billswillnevermove says: Feb 26, 2015 2:30 PM

The only reason he is signing with Buffalo is…he has a history with offensive coordinator Greg Roman and QB coach David Lee. The Bills need a veteran QB in camp so this fills that need and also the competition in camp between EJ and wh0 ever is the 3rd QB. Not much out there in free agency, unless you want to give up a ton for someone like Sam Bradford.

  7. bearsalwaysbearit says: Feb 26, 2015 2:31 PM

That might have a better outcome if they let Mario Williams play QB for them. McCown is not the answer to any teams QB problems.

The place where every backup QB plays at some point in their career

  9. waldoampere says: Feb 26, 2015 2:31 PM

I guess Rex isn’t in love with Sanchez after all.

  10. ghostofgilchrist says: Feb 26, 2015 2:33 PM

    He’s a backup at best….please…go get Bradford

  11. jason9696 says: Feb 26, 2015 2:33 PM

The Bills must have very little faith in E.J. Manuel.

  12. milkmandanimal says: Feb 26, 2015 2:38 PM

Having endured last year watching him “play QB” (those are very much sarcastic quotes) for the Bucs, I would just like to extend my sympathies now to Bills fans.

  13. laces out says: Feb 26, 2015 2:42 PM

he’ll be a free agent again this time next year

  14. bassplucker says: Feb 26, 2015 2:44 PM

Looks like the Browns may be stuck starting Johnny Foosball whether he’s up to the task or not. Hoyer is going to tell them to stick it (assuming they even ask), and no other FA QB wants within 100 miles of that situation even if it means the chance to start.

  15. billsrule2015 says: Feb 26, 2015 2:44 PM

Why the Bills are not calling to get Ryan Mallet asap in free agency I do not know. Josh McCown is a backup and another older version of Kyle Orton.

  16. dawgpoundjedi says: Feb 26, 2015 2:45 PM

As a Browns fan, I am praying this happens. The QB market isn’t good, but I want nothing to do with this guy. He had one above average season in Chicago, and that’s it. He’s been awful otherwise… let him be someone else’s QB. We have enough problems at that position as it is.

  17. td30 says: Feb 26, 2015 2:45 PM

I think Mark Sanchez is available

As a Browns fan, I’m not sure if I should be disappointed or relieved.

  20. corkspop says: Feb 26, 2015 2:47 PM

A lot of better QB’s are going to be available before the beginning of preseason.

  21. tolan04 says: Feb 26, 2015 2:48 PM

EJ must feel so highly of himself right now

  22. billswillnevermove says: Feb 26, 2015 2:49 PM

I know he looked awful on the Bucs, but the Bucs were a terrible, terrible team. Not saying he is great, but maybe he plays the way he did with the Bears the year before. Buffalo’s WR’s are on par with the Bears WR’s as a whole. Still don’t think the guy starts though.

  23. stash918 says: Feb 26, 2015 2:49 PM

Only a blowhard doofus who doesn’t understand the offensive nuances of the NFL in 2015 could think McCown is the solution to their QB issue. In other words, your Bills coach, Rex Ryan. I mean, did he even watch McCown in 2014?

  24. august589 says: Feb 26, 2015 3:07 PM

    Josh McCown–the “new” Kyle Orton.

  25. intrafinesse says: Feb 26, 2015 3:08 PM

McCown is better than EJ Manuel?
    They are both bad.

I’d rather save whatever they are going to pay him and put it towards better players.

  26. edavidberg says: Feb 26, 2015 3:10 PM

McCown stunk last year but so did EJ Manuel. At least McCown has looked like a competent NFL starter at some point. Some hope is better than none.

  27. pammy6 says: Feb 26, 2015 3:13 PM

Instead of letting young QBs play through they’re struggles the Bills continue to pull in old vets who are only a tiny bit better then the young QB anyway. Holcomb, Fitzpatrick, Orton and now Mcown. Ya think they’d learn from past mistakes, must just like losing.

  28. bassplucker says: Feb 26, 2015 3:18 PM

What’s kind of ironic about all this is that one of EJ’s better games last year – the overtime road win over Chicago in the season opener – was the game that got everybody wondering if the Bears should have let McCown go in the first place.

  29. jukeboxhero101 says: Feb 26, 2015 3:21 PM

from one terrible team to another.

  30. catquick says: Feb 26, 2015 3:31 PM

All you “genius’s” who mock the moves the Bills front office make forget that this GM made them a winner for the first time in a decade and a half. McCown may not be Rodgers, but the quality of the team he QB’ed in Tampa had something to do with it. They were just a bad team, period. EJ learned a ton from Orton, something he didn’t have his rookie year. He will learn even more from another seasoned vet. I doubt the Bills are looking at Josh as a starter. From all reports, EJ has become the guy, showing up first in the morning and being he last to leave. His accuracy has improved, and his attitude is much better. He has grown confident. You’re kidding yourself if you think he doesn’t have the tools or talent to make it. He was tossed into a maelstrom as a rookie with no vet presence. He has that now for 2 straight seasons. He could be the best young gun in the league, with an offense that he can excel in. Rodgers had Favre, Brady had Bledsoe. Everyone news a mentor in this complex NFL system. Look for EJ to shine. It’s a brand new world for EJ. Go Bills!

  31. lanham4eve says: Feb 26, 2015 3:33 PM

The bills currently have two qbs under contract, most teams go to camp with four. He may wind up cut or on the bench depending on who wins out ej, Mcclown or whom ever else they bring in.

  32. onlynyteam22 says: Feb 26, 2015 3:38 PM

@billsrule2015 how do you not know they won’t be going after mallet. This moves suggest that they will be if anything. They are bringing him in more as a coach/mentor (mark Brunell/Sanchez). Now you go get mallet and you have an open battle between mallet and EJ. mallet hasn’t done a thing in this league besides play under Brady. He will not demand a ton of money, it seems people think he’s going to be getting starting qb money, he won’t even be paid as tier 4 starter. This move is good for buffalo, and it will be better once they bring in someone to compete with EJ. This makes perfect sense. Stop reading into it that he’s coming to be a starter. he’s not.

  33. cantescapekarma says: Feb 26, 2015 3:40 PM

Well, I like that McCown seems to be choosing Buffalo over all the other teams he visited with. It’s not like he doesn’t have other options…

  34. joetoronto says: Feb 26, 2015 4:17 PM

McCown is beyond awful, just a hot mess, but he’s way better than Manuel and you have to remember, no one worth anything wants to go to Buffalo.

And you can’t blame them, it’s plain brutal.

  35. lolatpatshaters says: Feb 26, 2015 4:18 PM

I heard Rob Johnson is still available.

  38. njraiderfan19 says: Feb 26, 2015 4:23 PM

Rex is planning a ground and pound offense that suits Buffalo’s late-season weather. He’ll only need a steady veteran game-manager. Couple that with their defense and this will be a tough team to tangle with next yesr. This could be a good place for McCown.

  39. iloveagoodnap says: Feb 26, 2015 4:28 PM

Why why why why why why oh my god WHY. I hate being a Bills fan. This just took the wind out of my sails.

I know I would be a massive failure as an NFL GM. How is it possible then that year after year, guy after guy, I am scratching my head asking what are you doing of the Bills front office. How is it that they seem to be even more inept that me and make moves that cant possibly make any sense?!

16 years and counting. I hate this damn team.

  40. ampats says: Feb 26, 2015 4:32 PM

The two best QB’s in the AFCE play in New England.

Thanks for the laughs Bills fans

  41. elmaxoh says: Feb 26, 2015 4:35 PM

He’s not the short and long term answer here ..

  42. gjv001 says: Feb 26, 2015 4:41 PM

I believe there is a real good chance that Sanchez will be the Bill’s QB in 2015. If Sanchez plays for the Bills as he did for The Eagles, Buffalo will be in the Playoffs.

  43. j0esixpack says: Feb 26, 2015 4:42 PM

Buffalo fans better hope this guy is just camp fodder or at best a backup

35 years old – a thoroughly mediocre career at best – and if he played 16 games in a season this year it would be the FIRST time ever in his career

The Bills should get a young QB with potential, because if there’s one thing Rex Ryan is known for, it’s Quarterback Development 😉

  44. pslbucfan says: Feb 26, 2015 7:19 PM

I figured it out. They’re gonna play McCown, just like the Bucs, they’re gonna suck just like the Bucs did, and why? Cardale Jones in 2016. You’re welcome.

  45. kgunforhire says: Feb 26, 2015 8:05 PM

With a QB market pretty barren, why not McNown. I can see this move being healthy competition for EJ. Just because they sign McNown doesn’t mean that the Bills are done addressing the position. There’s so much that can still happen between now and the start of the season.
