Report: Raiders to part ways with LaMarr Woodley

AP

The Raiders will be cutting one of their free-agent signees of 2014.

Oakland is set to release defensive end LaMarr Woodley, Fallon Smith of CSN Bay Area reported Sunday.

Woodley, 30, notched just five tackles in six games in 2014 before a torn biceps ended his season. Last March, he signed a two-year deal reportedly worth up to $12 million.

Woodley was set to make $3.8 million in salary in 2015, per NFLPA data. Also, he was due a $1 million roster bonus on March 14, according to CSN Bay Area.

Woodley rose to stardom with Pittsburgh, notching double-digit sacks in 2008, 2009 and 2010. However, he has just nine sacks in his last 30 games, and he has not played all 16 regular-season contests since 2010.

    No surprise here.

You had a great run Wood. Champion and was paid really nice!

I think this signing was doomed from the start – from day 1 it was clear that Woodley was toast. He was the defensive Maurice Jones-Drew.

Other than Tuck (who was mediocre but came on late to provide leadership) and Penn, Reggie’s signings were abysmal.

I hope we don’t whiff in free agency again this year. Another monster draft and solid free agency and there’s no doubt we contend for the AFC West this year.

  5. ravenmuscle says: Mar 1, 2015 5:30 PM

Both the Steelers and the Ravens know when to hold them and when to fold them.

  6. bettis3636 says: Mar 1, 2015 5:38 PM

Woodley, Harrison, Timmons, Foote… man those where some dominate years… Woodley was a steal in the second round for a few years… Tomlin hit that 1st and 2nd round right outta the park… but all good things must come to a end… See Ya Wood!!

  7. patsfan1820 says: Mar 1, 2015 5:41 PM

    Next stop Atlanta?

  8. 6ball says: Mar 1, 2015 5:51 PM

Woodley : mediocre talent, top tier agent.

Lazy player who was once able to get by on pure talent.

  10. goraidersgospurs says: Mar 1, 2015 6:10 PM

Wish the raiders would release everyone & have over $100 million in cap space!!!

  11. sdflash2006 says: Mar 1, 2015 6:12 PM

This is a really bad move. No doubt he was a franchise legend. Ben Davidson, Ted Hendricks, Howie Long, Lamar Woodley. He is part of a long line of great Raiders defensive ends (5 really special tackles) and leaves quite a legacy.

  12. blackngold4life says: Mar 1, 2015 6:14 PM

He’s done! And don’t EVEN think about returning to Pittsburgh

  13. seatownballers says: Mar 1, 2015 6:19 PM

Raiders should trade their second round pick for A Peterson. They can pay him his wage and still get suh and Crabtree

  14. humb0lt says: Mar 1, 2015 6:30 PM

The Raiders released Woodley because they want to bring back Richard Seymour. Mark Davis is going to send two more 1st round draft picks to New England just to be sure.

  15. Fake French Accent says: Mar 1, 2015 6:39 PM

They should cut their offensive coordinator.

I went into a Raiders bar(yeah yeah i know) and totally destroyed everyones dreams, as a Vikings fans I had to watch Musgrave’s soul crushing attempt at play calling for YEARS. They kept being all like “Yeah but he did wonders with Mark Sanchez and Matt Ryan”, yeah, as a QB coach.

Mark my words, I didn’t hear the end of it from these Raider fans about how awesome their offense is going to be!! I truly feel sorry for what they are about to experience. Can you believe that? A Vikings fan feeling sorry for somebody else.

Let me get you started in your journey of misery; his offensive play calling card is smaller than most golf scorecards, and its not because he has a concise vision for how to run an offense.

  16. araidersfan says: Mar 1, 2015 6:46 PM

The Woodley sign is just one of many misfires by McKenzie. Part of the reason I don’t have much respect for the job he’s done so far as GM.

  17. eddytap says: Mar 1, 2015 6:48 PM

I’m a raider fan and have been one for years. Yes it’s been hard for the past 12yrs. But I believe raider fans need to be realistic (if that is even possible) about our situation. Reggie inherited a mess. It’s was a 10 yrs in the making mess. No One wanted the GM job who had experience or didn’t want to get paid a bunch if money to maybe turn this thing around. So if we couldn’t attract a top flight GM or Coach what makes fans think any top player would come to Oakland unless we overpaid them which was part of the problem in the first place. Every first time GM makes mistakes and Reggie is no exception. He needs time. From the looks of his last two drafts he’s figuring it out. The same goes for free agency. Reggie was working with a stacked deck. How do you attract top flight free agents without overpaying them. So that how you end up with last yr. give him time. It will come

  18. ariani1985 says: Mar 1, 2015 6:55 PM

Rose to stardom is a bit of a reach! More like a guy who was around!

  19. sdchicken says: Mar 1, 2015 6:58 PM

They need young talent not 30 year old veterans chasing one last payday. The salary cap hell is over…no more excuses.

  20. phukurmouf says: Mar 1, 2015 7:00 PM

    Lebeau and tennessee?

  21. Silver and Black attack says: Mar 1, 2015 7:02 PM

This was a no brainer..Woodley ranks #3 on the worst free agent signings list by Reggie Mckenzie..just behind Schaub at #2 and Matt flynn at #1.

  22. keithdylan says: Mar 1, 2015 7:05 PM

Wait, he was on the team?

  23. charger383 says: Mar 1, 2015 7:17 PM

time to get a real GM, McKenzie was just somebody to fill in like most of his siginings

  24. punxrawk124 says: Mar 1, 2015 7:17 PM

one thing i find very funny is every time a story concerning the raiders is on here you can count on the charger fans to turn out en masse to mock the raiders.
what a pathetic existence it must be to be a charger fan. no team in the afc west considers the charger games to be a rivalry. empathy is all the division has for the chargers i mean it must be tough to root for a team that has never won anything, and to be out numbered in your own stadium when the raiders (no matter how bad they are) come to san diego.
but yeah charger fans keep on focusing on the raiders its a good distraction from the zero glory of the san diego chargers, the cubs of the nfl

  25. ohand16 says: Mar 1, 2015 7:22 PM

    Steelers need him desparately

    We told you.

  27. raiderraffeal says: Mar 1, 2015 7:27 PM

This move is a surprise to no one. His done just like Branch is done. I think The Raiders will go after FA’s like Iupati, J. Hughes or G. Hardy and Pot-Roast. Draft K. White in the first, D. Perryman in the Second and Best Available after that.

  28. atodaso says: Mar 1, 2015 7:31 PM

@punxrock. Just like Joe Troll on any AFC West article. He’s got a lot of real cute nicknames though…smh

  29. timmons94 says: Mar 1, 2015 8:15 PM

Great player… When he is in shape. But he has been living at golden corral for awhile now… Dont get it… Eating himself out of the nfl

    ————
humb0lt obviously has nothing to work with. San Diego’s punter has a 4.3M cap hit this year. Antonio Gates is taking almost 9.8M, and Donald Brown counts for over 4M. Seymour hasn’t played in two years. Woodley has no cap hit, and gives back 5M this year. He was a bad choice, but isn’t pulling a check in Oakland this season.

    LMAO!

  32. realfootballfan says: Mar 1, 2015 9:41 PM

Most of those defensive players who leave Pittsburgh fall off the face of the earth and are never heard from again. Kevin Greene and Chad Brown.

  33. JSpicoli says: Mar 1, 2015 9:44 PM

    Ted Hendricks was a linebacker.

    TIA

  34. babygaga19 says: Mar 1, 2015 10:06 PM

Get rid of everybody except Woodson and Carr. And for gods sake, give Carr some weapons!

  35. radrntn says: Mar 1, 2015 10:26 PM

5 tacles are you sure? Maybe 4 of them were assisted.

c-ya, worst signee the past year. (yes worse than Schaub)…….get Suh.

    Go Raiders

  36. cannonballdookie says: Mar 1, 2015 10:47 PM

Cardinals or Titans will sign him but shouldn’t, he’s so out of shape and basically became a bum once he got his contract.

  37. Brandon in Northwest Suburbia says: Mar 1, 2015 10:52 PM

I really have no idea why anybody would sign a firmerly effective edge pass rusher who came into free agency 50+ lbs overweight. Even for the Raiders, that was a head-scratcher.

  38. realfootballfan says: Mar 1, 2015 10:54 PM

Meant to say Kevin Greene and Chad Brown were the few exceptions.

  39. sdflash2006 says: Mar 1, 2015 11:40 PM

I know Ted Hendricks was a linebacker. So was Woodley and who can tell who is a defensive end or a linebacker anymore anymore.

Doesn’t change the fact that Lamar Woodley was among the best ends/linebackers in a Raider history. I hope he enters the Hall of Fame as a Raider because of his deep connection with Oakland and the Raider fan base. And to think that he was willing to make such contributions for only $8 million brings tears to the eyes of this lifelong a Raider fan. Hate all you want his 5 tackles will live on in Raider history.

I just hope he doesn’t blow a hole in his chest before the hall comes calling, that would be a travesty! Stay irrelevant San Diego!

It’s all about the rings, Charger fans.

    Got any? 🙂

  42. darthravendarklordofthesmith says: Mar 2, 2015 10:35 AM

it’s all been a downward trajectory since his prophetic “joe flacco and the ravens will never win the super bowl in this lifetime” comments in 2011… oh and not retracting them after being proven wrong. so now he has this, along with the taste of his own foot, in his mouth.

    karma, woodley…. karma…

  43. crownofthehelmet says: Mar 2, 2015 11:46 AM

Woodley owes half that raiders money to James Harrison, and the other half to Casey Hampton.

  44. tavisteelersfan says: Mar 2, 2015 3:57 PM

Sign him for VET minimum plus large per sack incentives. Put him in for about 20 plays a game for 3-5 games. If it don’t work, say goodbye. Butler knows him well.

  45. bigbenschancre says: Mar 2, 2015 9:58 PM

Next stop Oakland? Oh, wait . ..

  46. babygaga19 says: Mar 3, 2015 12:05 AM

So Toad Man is calling the shots for Raider free agency and draft???? Man, that is soo awesome!

  47. sbchampsagain says: Mar 3, 2015 11:56 AM

Woodley needs to thank Harrison and Colbert for his overvalued contracts.

Troy will be 34 this year. Wonder how much longer the Steelers will hold on to him? The AFC North continues to hope he plays until he’s 40!
