McCoy reportedly isn’t happy about being traded to Buffalo

Getty Images

In our first of umpteen-and-counting items about the Shady-for-Kiko trade, it was noted that it’s unclear whether running back LeSean McCoy will welcome a trade from Philadelphia to Buffalo.

He possibly won’t.

Josina Anderson of ESPN, citing an unnamed source close to LeSean McCoy, reports that McCoy is “frustrated” by the news that he’ll be sent to the Bills.

“He’s a Pennsylvania kid,” the source told Anderson.  “He’s never played football outside of Pennsylvania — high school, college, pro.  So of course he’s not happy.  Sounds like it’s pretty final to me unless LeSean is refusing to go to Buffalo.”

Of course, refusing to go to Buffalo would mean not earning $10.25 million in 2015, ultimately being cut by the Eagles, and then being forced to find $10.25 million on the open market.

“It’ll be interesting to see how this process plays itself out because he’s an interesting individual,” the source said.  “In your mind, when you think of Buffalo you think of cold and losing games.  It’s not like it’s the Philadelphia market where you’re always on [TV] and you’re playing for like the division title or that type of thing.”

Bills coach Rex Ryan likely believes that he’ll be able to persuade McCoy to give it a try, and Rex definitely has the ability to do that.  But McCoy may still balk, which means that the Bills then will have to decide whether to go through with the deal.

The deal can’t be finalized until 4:00 p.m. ET on March 10.  Before then, either side can decline to proceed.  And if McCoy makes it clear that he has no desire to play in Buffalo, that could be enough for the Bills to walk away, minimizing any style points they’d lose by reneging on the tentative swap.

Good. If the Bills are going to deal Kiko, it should be for a different Eagle (Nick Foles).

Chip Kelly is trying to create Oregon East…salary caps don’t win championships, players do and every now and then you have to adjust your ego and scheme to fit special guys(see marshawn lynch). I think Shady is special, we can all agree that McCoy is a young gifted back with at least 4 good seasons of tread left. $10M is steep but tha’s the deal the owner agree to, why not honor it or restructure it to ease some of the cap pain.

  6. johnromeo54 says: Mar 4, 2015 9:54 AM

He’ll end up going, which is what makes having a source close to you saying you’re frustrated stupid. Great first impression for your Bills teammates!

  9. carloswlassiter says: Mar 4, 2015 9:55 AM

Honestly, who would be excited to go to the Bills?

Players aren’t dumb – they’ve seen the Ryan road show for years and know that that team isn’t going to win squat, the weather couldn’t be any worse, and it’s going to be a long, cold miserable couple of seasons for McCoy until the Bills also figure out that paying a RB this kind of dough makes no sense and cut him.

Way to get off to a great start with your new team, LeSean. Buffalo is one of the few franchises that’s trending “up” right now. A dominant defense and a few missing pieces on offense. Get over yourself.

My team is the most desperate in the NFL (Titans), but if this is actually how you approach things, I don’t want you anywhere near our locker room. More than anything, we need team players.

The way all these nfl contracts set up do t make sense to me. The players sign a contract where the most money is made in the later years but always seem to get traded or released because they’re number is so high. Being an eagles fan I loved McCoy, will still argue he’s the best in the league but 10.25 million for a rb is too much I’m not happy he’s gone but I’m happy they got a very good player for him as opposed to just releasing him like desean.

Eagles got the best of it in that deal CLEARLY:

    1. Dump a 10MIL/yr RB in league for 7 seasons;
    2. Pick up great young LB for about 9MIL/yr in salary cap hit.

The System makes Kelly’s players. He can find another McCoy without much effort.

  42. wclj says: Mar 4, 2015 10:20 AM

  43. chargerdillon says: Mar 4, 2015 10:20 AM

If McCoy was worth 10 million he’d still be an Eagle. Darren Sproles performed better than McCoy virtually the entire year.

Eagles fans may not want to hear this, but the minute Sproles started scoring TD’s, McCoy was always going to be traded or cut.

There’s only one person to blame and that’s McCoy. If he played better last year, he would still be an Eagle.

  44. derpadeederpjetsyjet says: Mar 4, 2015 10:21 AM

  46. phillyboypat5 says: Mar 4, 2015 10:23 AM

@billswillnevermove McCoy has been in the NFL since 2009. Eagles competed for the division, finishing in second, still making the playoffs. 2010, they won the division. 2011 finished second in the division, still competing. 2012 was a terrible year. 2013 they won the division. 2014 they finished second competing for the division for the majority of the season.

So yes, since McCoy has been in the league, the Eagles have been winning divisions or contending for divisions every year but one. Not to mention.

Not to mention from 2000-2008 they made the playoffs 7 times, winning the division 5 times. So yea, I would say for the most part, they are always winning or competing for the division title.

  47. realdealsteel says: Mar 4, 2015 10:24 AM

When you are a super special like Lesean it is easy to make about thirty million over three years in any city really . Probably much more .

He might not feel like giving Buffalo his special presence . He will have to stare out at the sky and give it deep thought and reflection .

  49. whenwilliteverend says: Mar 4, 2015 10:24 AM

First of all, when is he not complaining? Secondly, I think Chip Kelly is more interested in dumping his salary to give them more flexibility in signing other players. I agree with several other posters on here–he’s not worth $10M. I don’t think any RB is worth that now with the passing rules the way they are.

The thing that disturbs me is Kelly’s apparent desire to fill his roster with his former college players. I remember Steve Spurrier did the same thing when he was coach of the Redskins and we all know where that got him.

He may not be happy but I’m sure he’s not unhappy enough to give up his $10M salary. If he were on the open market, I doubt he’d get anywhere close to that. Again, not a slight on McCoy as much as it is on the devaluing of RBs. Plus, you can always get one in the draft and even in the later rounds. This year’s RB class is pretty deep. I’m actually surprised Rex is willing to pick up that contract.

COntrary to popular belief, you are not that much closer to a Super Bowl than Buffalo is….

Your franchise and mine really parallel each other.. we lose Super Bowls, and you are losers of NFC Championship games. Well, you did choke in that one Super Bowl, so yeah, we have been there before. Stop acting like you are light years ahead of us, when the reality is that Buffalo is a good qb away from being a Super Bowl contender. The fact that we could give you Kiko should tell you where are defense is…

oh and I love the Pats clown above who couldnt even spell Buffalo correctly. I expect nothing less from a classless organization, city and fanbase.

  53. ameradian1 says: Mar 4, 2015 10:27 AM

The real pressure here is on Ryan. He was the recipient of last year’s blockbuster trade in Percy Harvin to his Jets, but ol’ Rex could not build a winning team in spite of that. Now he is this years recipient of another blockbuster deal, and if he does not go better than 9-7, the record of last years Bills, he will be deemed a failure yet again.

Even further than that, since 99 the Eagles have either won or been in the hunt for the division every single year except for 3. So in 16 seasons they have had 3 bad ones. Only other teams like this are the Pats and Steelers.

  56. cardiovascularendurance says: Mar 4, 2015 10:33 AM

This whole thing reeks of Rosenhaus. His client got traded to a team he doesn’t want to play for, Rosenhaus leaks the info then claims the deal isn’t final yet and then leaks that McCoy doesn’t want to play in Buffalo. He’s hoping to force someone’s hand to get a release and cash in on another new contract for McCoy. It’s pitiful.

He now goes to Buffalo which is 284 miles away or a 4 1/2-5 hour drive. It’s not like they sent him to Oakland. I’m sure he can handle it. And his beloved Pennsylvania is only an hour drive away. Poor baby. So you want to make 10 mil AND dictate where you get to play? Newsflash: there are millions of people who would gladly trade places with you.

RB is a devalued position – you are extremely lucky to find an employer who thinks that it is worth what you are getting paid. Frankly, I think the Bills are fools for getting rid of a promising defensive player who is still on his rookie deal for an RB who will likely never again put up the same numbers that he did a few seasons ago. This smells like a panic move by the Bills who know that their QB situation is dire.

You should have had a no trade clause in your contract. Now you should know if you refuse you will have to find a new team and a salary. If you do this, everyone calling you immature will then resort to inviting you on your search for a new home.

  82. gnorules says: Mar 4, 2015 11:03 AM

I hate losing McCoy as much as every other Eagles fan, but if Kiko gets back to where he was two seasons ago I think Philly is winning on this trade since the defense has been crap. And since Chip is stockpiling Oregon players you know that we’ll see more. We already have Kenyon Barner on the team and Lemichael James was let go last season by the 49ers. That’s two cheap options that already know Chips system.

  83. jpmelon says: Mar 4, 2015 11:08 AM

I hope this source is accurate. The Bills should keep Kiko. The Bills will show both 3-4 and 4-3 this season. We absolutely have a use for Kiko. The Bills already made their splash hire when they got Rex Ryan. We really need some smart decisions. Upgrade one more spot on the OL, draft a RB in the 2nd or 3rd round to complement Fred Jackson, and bring in a FA QB (Hoyer?) to compete with EJ. If the OL is good, and the Defense dominates, it will set up our run-game regardless of who our RB is.

McCoy is a really good RB, but so is Spiller and he didn’t get it done behind our OL last year.

  84. truenorth84 says: Mar 4, 2015 11:08 AM

They’ve either won the division or have been within 1 game of winning the division in 10 out of the past 15 seasons. And that doesn’t count last year, when the division was on the line when they played Dallas in Week 15, so they were playing for the division that year too.

So of course, they’re not always playing for the division title. But 11 out of the past 15 seasons they have been, and that’s a helluva lot better than most teams, and much better than what the Bills have been doing.

If McCoy is smart he’ll gladly play for the Bills under his current contract, because that’s the last year he’ll likely come close to that number.

Personally, I don’t believe the current wisdom that RBs are interchangeable and don’t need to be paid. Most of them are, sure, within certain limits. But a great RB is hard to come by. If you can find a guy who can also catch passes reliably out of the backfield, or even line up in the slot on occasion, that player is worth paying, within reason.

Unfortunately, part of the problem is teams are lucky to get a few good/great years out of a back these days. 30 is now washed up. 28 is seen as prime, but on the wain. So hard to tell when a guy is going to decline.

  90. pftfan says: Mar 4, 2015 11:21 AM

You mean he doesn’t want to play for the “REAL New York team” (aka the one that plays in the 51st largest media market)?

I can’t see why Buffalo isn’t an attractive place to play being that it’s a mere 400 miles away from the fun New York City nightlife.

If McCoy doesn’t want to drive 12 hours to Manhattan, it’s only a 3 hour drive to Cleveland. With Buffalo, the possibilities are endless!

  91. ttommytom says: Mar 4, 2015 11:32 AM

Buffalo is way more similar to Pittsburgh than Philadelphia.

Philly is East Coast. The other two cities have a different mentality altogether. Anyone familiar with all 3 know exactly what I’m talking about.

So the whole ‘Pennsylvania’ thing is a bit bogus.

    ……………………….
When will you learn when people call it the real NY team it’s not in reference to NYC, it’s in reference to NYS. Contrary to the opinions of the undeservedly arrogant NYC area residents, there is an entire state of NY outside of NYC that wants nothing to do with being associated with NYC. Buffalo is it’s own city, it’s own region, with it’s own nightlife and it’s own culture and no one even considers NYC to have any relation to it, whatsoever.

But I suppose you can fall back on the 20 year expired “Buffalo is a dump and miserable” stereotypes, despite the fact it’s been named on countless lists in the past 2 years distributed by reputable media outlets which name it as an up and coming city, ripe with exciting new cultural, economic and social developments. I suppose you can also ignore the fact that countless Bills alumni, including those who never wanted to come here (Jim Kelley, for example) stayed here permanently after their careers ended.

Also your 51st largest media market #s are skewed- they don’t factor in Rochester, which is for all intents and purposes part of the Bills market, or St Catherines and Niagara Falls ON. When you consider all of those combined as the Bills total market (because in reality, it IS), it jumps into the top half of the league.

Aside from all of that, though- you’re spot on!

He doesn’t want to come here because the Bills suck the last 15 and he’s under the delusion and he’s under the impression he can get more money. End of story.

The Pats also dropped 28 on the seahawks. The Pats dominated everyone last year after week 4, with the Packers and their 2nd stringers vs Buffalo being the lone exceptions.

If you watched the Bills the rest of the year, it’s pretty obvious they were dominant at times and they were the only reason Buffalo was 9-7 and not 5-11. Even good defenses have bad games.

People don’t seem to understand. Buffalo is not going to get nearly the same amount of yards out of McCoy that Philadelphia did. Not even close. It’s the system. McCoy ran through huge holes mostly, with the occasional cut back in the open field that left everyone with their jaw dropped. But he also dances too much and gets dropped for losses on first and second down, setting up obvious passing situations on third down, which puts pressure on the quarterback.

McCoy plays great against defenses with linebackers who are slow and can’t get to the sideline (Giants) but against teams with stellar linebackers who can run (Panthers) he really struggles.

  122. jetfanfolife says: Mar 4, 2015 1:05 PM

    Rookie Year – 2009 637 yards – 308 rec yards

2010 “the year of the franchise player, Michael Vick” LOL – 1,080 yards on 207 carries 5.2 ypc avg – 592 rec yards

    2011 – 1,309 yards on 273 carries, 4.8 ypc ave – 17 TD’S, 315 rec yards

    2012 – ANDY’s last year – 840 yards on 200 carries – 4.2 ypc avg – 373 rec yards (NO OFFENSIVE LINE)

    Chip Kelly- McCoy Era
    2013 1607 yards on 314 carries, 5.1 ypc avg – 537 rec yards
    2014 – 1319 on 312 carries, 4.2 ypc avg – 155 rec yards.

By carries, TD’s & YPC – McCoy did better with Andy, not Chip. So the “system” excuse Eagle fans want to use now is really funny. He’s a 26 year old franchise RB that will have fantastic years under Rex & a more conventional offense.

The very minute shady said he would restructure his deal but noy6take a penny less…Chip was shopping him. McCoy is a great RB but, he doesnt fit Chip’s offence. Its an uptempo offense. So when shady does his usual dance in the backfield looking for 80 yards instead of taking the 5 they gave him then dropped for a loss. It pisses Chip off. Now instead of 2 and 5. Its 2 and 14. Plus, all his noise for 11 mill a year. No thanks.

  134. dave_bords says: Mar 4, 2015 1:52 PM

Bills are playing the compensatory game. Let Spiller go, trade for McCoy. Rather than sign Hoyer or Sanchez, trade a low round pick for Cassell. Depending on Hughes and Searcy, should result in some compensatory picks. Seems like the Bills are willing to gamble on the DL being the main factor of the DEF. I don’t get when fans talk about honoring contracts. If the contract says the player can be cut at this time for this much money and then gets cut, then that means they honored the contract. The only way to not honor a contract is to do something a contract doesn’t allow.

Anyway that flawed argument is irrelevant in this situation anyway. McCoy’s contract is being “honored” otherwise they wouldn’t have the ability to trade him to the Bills.

If anything McCoy is the one who supposedly isn’t going to honor his contract. Its being reported that he is trying to rework his contract to get more guarantees from the Bills for the last 2 years of his contract, and if he doesn’t get it he will try to kill the trade by not showing up. Even though under the contract they signed the eagles have every right to trade him, and also under the contract he signed he’s required to show up to practices and ota’s.

So let’s not cry for McCoy he knew exactly what was in the contract he and his scumbag agent was signing. I don’t remember hearing him complain when he was cashing a multimillion dollar signing bonus.
