Bills close to deal to retain pass-rusher Jerry Hughes

AP

One of the biggest names on the free agent pass-rusher market may never get there.

According to Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News, the Bills are close to finalizing a deal for defensive end Jerry Hughes.

That will be a huge deal for the Bills, who made an equivalent splash on the other side of the ball of running back LeSean McCoy.

Hughes looked like a bust in Indianapolis, but has posted back-to-back 10.0 sack seasons with the Bills. He’s still just 26, so the Bills clearly saw enough in him to warrant what will certainly be a huge investment.

Where are all the Rex Ryan haters now? Seeing as you all think he’s the GM.

Rex came to the realization that Revis will land in NY or stay in NE.

I don’t get the appeal of signing a contract as a big free agent name without first seeing what’s out there. If you don’t want to leave you can still accept the teams offer. I must be missing something because if I was an agent or player I’d be excited as hell to open up my contract for auction to see what the value is and have a pick of teams (including the current team).

I can’t see what is gained by signing before free agency.

Not a huge need glad to see him back

Better than McCoy over-pay, but who knows — both will probably be busts in Buffalo.

Somebody call Raiders GM Reggie M and tell him the Raides need DE help and DT and Guard and WR and RB and MLB and CB and Safety I miss Al Davis Reggie is clueless

  8. rhemish says: Mar 8, 2015 8:47 PM

Hey Mark Davis you know what you know and you know what you don’t know I know you don’t know Reggie is a poor GM The raiders gave so many needs and so much cap space and Reggie is in slow motion so frustrating For Raider nation after last years failures

No. Hughes saw he wasn’t getting the money from other teams that the Bills were offering. Over paid. He will now be the bust he was in Indy since he’s getting paid.

For the last month Bills fans had Jerry Hughes as a product of Williams, Williams, and Dareus; I wonder if he still is.

I got a buttload of haters for saying this on the Giants thread earlier.

Redfield11 the ability for agents to negotiate with other teams opened up Friday, I think.

Nah, just spoiling the air waves until we get him back in the fold. Simple fan tradecraft.

Hughes definitely benefits from the guys around him…but he played well 10 sacks 2 seasons in a row is pretty good, and his style and of play fits Rex’s defense so resigning does make sense. Lets just hope this means the Bills are going to focus on building the O-line in free agency.

Moron. Hard to be a bust in Buffalo when he already has played two seasons here and has 20 sacks the last 2 years AHAHAHAAHHAAH. Oh and he’s only 26.

Bills = best DL and pass rush in the NFL. 111 sacks the last two years. That’s what happens when you have 4 superstar all pro DLs in Kyle and Mario Williams, Marcel Big Daddy Dareus and Jerry Hughes. Love having the best D in the league.

  20. rolandsloan says: Mar 8, 2015 9:27 PM

It’ll be fine as long as Jerry tries to live up to the contract….And he doesn’t challenge Marcel Dareus to any drag race’s.

Just maybe he wanted to stay in Buffalo. Maybe he knows that he will prosper in Rex’s Defense.. Sometimes it isn’t all about the money

  22. talkingproud says: Mar 8, 2015 10:04 PM

He’s asking for $10 million per year and the Bills have offered him $8.5 million per year. That doesn’t seem very “close” to me.

  23. chiefchampionofjustice says: Mar 8, 2015 10:38 PM

Bills did Hughes a solid by not putting tag on him. His agent has agreed to make every effort to work deal out. It WILL get done

  24. sellout1983 says: Mar 8, 2015 11:20 PM

Crap, really really wanted Cincinnati to get him. Good job Bills.

  25. carnegiemellonisafruitstand says: Mar 8, 2015 11:31 PM

All that money and he doesn’t even have to play football after New Year’s.

  26. catquick says: Mar 8, 2015 11:36 PM

    restorativejusticeprogram…..you mean “busts” in Canton.

  27. hottubtodd says: Mar 8, 2015 11:37 PM

With Miami using up most of their budget to sign Suh, Buffalo can scoop up Charles Clay, one more guard ( maybe Iupata) and still have room to grab another QB. That’s all a bonus to an off season that Bill fans can get excited about. We still have to play games, and the Pats are our Daddy, but in a year round league. It surely makes it easier to go to work in March nowing that my team is not waiting for the competition to get worse. Go Pegula, Go Whaley, Go Ryan. GO BILLS!!!!
