New deal for Scott Tolzien means Matt Flynn’s out in Green Bay

AP

As it turns out, the Packers hanging onto quarterback Scott Tolzien was a sign of a bigger move.

According to Tom Silverstien of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers aren’t expected to keep veteran backup quarterback Matt Flynn, after keeping Tolzien with a one-year, $1.375 million deal.

Of course, based on his career trajectory, Flynn probably has a few more hysterical contracts left in him, and has proven to be a serviceable backup in the past. Given the state of the market, he’ll almost certainly find work as an unrestricted free agent.

The Packers obviously saw enough out of Tolzien to figure him as the backup to Aaron Rodgers, and will now bring in a younger quarterback to fill out the depth chart.

They traditionally hadn’t kept three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, though Tolzien made them change their tune on that. Now, they’ll either go back to keeping two, or find a developmental kid to hang around and carry the clipboard.

  1. Flynn has been a serviceable backup for one team. For every other team he’s played for, he’s failed miserably. This is the same guy who was cut in favor of an undrafted rookie free agent, not once, but twice in the same season (Oakland and Buffalo). His career should be over.

  2. Even when Tolzien started 2 years ago I was impressed. He threw INT’s but showed a great arm and poise. Than last preseason he clearly outplayed Flynn. He’s a hard worker and is never going to be anything more than a backup, but I think he has a chance to be a pretty good 1.

  3. Best of luck to him. He served the Pack well as a backup and seems like a decent guy. Who knows in today’s crazy NFL… he might still end up as a starter somewhere.

Of course, knowing the Packers’ offense as well as Flynn does, I’m sure Spielman, Zimmer and BOTH Wilfs are beating a path to his door even as I type this.

  4. Although he was only ever a backup QB in Green Bay, I’ll always be thankful for Flynn saving the season a couple years ago. Forever a Packer.

So he calmly throws billets to the other team? Impressive!!

  6. Matt’s a really good guy. I’ve had the opportunity to be around him on more than just a couple occasions. I wish the best to him.
He needs to be in a west coast offensive schemed passing system. That’s what he understands the best.
My concern is his elbow tendonitis. It’s a problem he has to deal with.

  7. Great move. Nothing against Flynn, but Tolzien has a great upside. Once he goes through the entire camp running the #2 team, he’ll be much more prepared to enter and produce. I am pleased with this move.

  8. I want each and every one of you Packer sloths to come kiss Viking behind when Teddy beats you at least once this season.

    Once!?!?

Come on, I can’t believe you could possibly even entertain the thought or admit the possibility that Teddy Bruisewater & Co. wouldn’t beat the Packers twice!

Even three times were they to meet in the playoffs (on the Vikings way to their Superbowl L triumph).

  10. … as pretty much every Packer fan predicted. Can’t feel bad for Flynn; if he’s had any financial sense at all he should be set for life from the contracts he got from other teams.
Thanks for your contributions Scott, and best of luck.

And pervy – really? Getting all revved up over the possibility of one win against your big rivals? Well, I guess that’s what losing – what is it? 5? 7? – in a row does to someone.

  11. Flynn has served GB well. Hope someone picks him up. Tolzein deserves a chance. Has looked good in practice,

  12. And the Packers are playing clown music even louder this time thinking Tolzien=Tarzian. He can only be their retard. On the other hand, Bridgewater=Beat Packers.

We are a better franchise in a better state than the loserville Packers in a terrible state with clown music.

Viking fans spend their weekends commenting on Packer articles…. lol.

  14. Hope Bridgewater doesn’t fake another ankle injury to avoid the Packers this season.

Anger management classes fail again? Take a couple of minutes and look back at the records of the two franchises over the past decade. BTW-I hear the Vikes are looking at AJ Hawk. How many ex-Packers does it make on the Vikes? Better be careful who you call losers. Lots of ’em on your team.

  16. And the Packers just keep playing clown music louder if they think Tolzien equals Tarzian. On the other hand Bridgewater equal Beat Packers. Like it or not it’s the fact.

We are a better franchise in a better state than the loserville Packers in a terrible pathetic state with clown music.

  17. Gotta love the how far the expectations have fallen for Vikings fans. I’ve heard nothing but joy about finishing 7-9. And nothing but hope for a QB with 14 TD’s and 12 Ints. And now they top it off by predicting 1 yes 1! singular win against the GB Packers.

Way to shoot for the stars Pervy, cody ariani, in teddy, conner or whatever names you are commenting as today.

  18. Whatever the level to which the trolls attempt to relegate the status of Green Bay, the Green Bay Packers, or the fans of the Green Bay Packers, it all fails miserably in the face of one simple fact:

    The Packers own the Vikings.

How does that make you feel?

  19. Talking about over paying is Cobb. He’s garbage and would never made the Vikings squad. He has learn a lot from Jennings and yet still trash. Keep wasting Rodgers career with these mediocre receivers.

  20. Talking about over paying is Cobb. He’s garbage and would never made the Vikings squad. He has learn a lot from Jennings and yet still trash. Keep wasting Rodgers career with these mediocre receivers.

Any Packers trolls can say Packers own the Vikings. That’s only an opinion, but it’s facts that CHOKING OWNS THE PACKERS, that’s all that matters.

  22. Packers have had the upper hand recently, but in the 70’s and 80’s, the Packers were DOMINATED by the Vikings. 3 wins against the Vikes in ten years (20 games) at one point. The tide is about to turn once again!

If the 70’s and 80’s are now suitably and selectively relevant for you, I guess the Viking trolls can stop saying the Thirteen (13) Green Bay Packer NFL World Championships are too old to be worth talking about then, I guess.

    Do I have that right?

  25. Cody, Cody, Cody. One missed opportunity does not constitute a trend. And the Packers have won your coveted North Division Title what, four times in a row? Five?

You look up “owned” in the dictionary, and you’ll see the Vikings. As in……”owned by the Packers”. That, my simple friend, is called a fact.

  26. The Vikings will most likely return to their customary, and rightful, place in the NFCN cellar this year.

The Packers are clearly the class of the division and the Lions are coming on strong.

The Bears were an absolute train wreck last year but they are still The Chicago Bears. A storied franchise with much to be proud of. Their tradition and history simply will not allow them to stay down.

And then there’s the Vikings. The hapless Vikings, who are quite accustomed to losing. It’s what they do best because it’s what they’ve done the most. They simply don’t know how to be successful. The only people in the entire organization that have ever won anything are players that won something with another team. The owners have never won anything. The GM has never won anything. The head coach has never won anything. 90% of their players have never won anything. It’s just a loser culture.

  27. Tolzien was still too raw with the offense last year to take over for Flynn, but he should have had enough time now. It will be interesting to see how he’s progressed; he already had a good arm and mobility.

  28. Cody, have you strayed away from your meds again?
Take some deep breaths and count to 10, or at least do the best you can.

I can totally understand your frustration. It must be terribly painful to have your Vikings completely owned by the Green Bay Packers year after year.
Their continued success must be a stinging torment for you. That’s obvious.
I just can’t imagine your reaction to Teddy Junkwater’s imminent regression this season.

    Sad.

  29. Flynn was never that good, merely servicable and now his time in GB is over.

But if he were smart and could stand the stench coming from the Viking’s locker room, he should sign there immediately. He’s better than Bustwater and with that O line, Bustwater will be on IR by Holloween. Flynn could then be a starter and be re united with his ex Packers Jennings, Johnson and Bostick. (jeez, can Spielman donate some of his salary to Ted Thompson? Those are all Thompson’s picks or signings.)

Packers should sign Tolzien to a huge contract of $100 mil since he’s going to be the next Favre and get Rodgers out of there asap.
    ////////////////////////////

He won’t sign a contract that large until he’s near the end of his career……….and the Vikings pick him up.

  31. Good move by the Packers! Tolzien is a hard working kid and a student of the game. He deserves this opportunity.

  32. Too many over-the-top comments. As a loyal Packer fan, I have the following to offer:
-Glad to have Tolzien signed. I think with the right tutelage, his strong arm and work ethic will make him a great, serviceable backup to AR.
-Thanks for everything, Matt. You did exactly what was asked of you. Good luck in your future endeavors.
-I’m glad the Vikes have Bridgewater, an up and coming team leader. I’m expecting great things from him this year.
-I’m glad the Vikes have Zimmer. I think his workman type attitude will have the Vikes competitive in the NFC North.
    Now, let’s just play ball!
