Reports: Mark Sanchez is staying in Philadelphia

Chip Kelly’s running his offseason at the same kind of tempo he wants his offense to play on the field.

A flurry of moves (or at least apparently mutually agreed upon negotiating positions) continues, as the Eagles have reached an agreement to retain quarterback Mark Sanchez, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

According to Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports, it’s a two-year deal worth $9.5 million, with $5.5 million guaranteed.

Sanchez isn’t the same kind of big fish as cornerback Byron Maxwell or running back Frank Gore, and will quickly be overshadowed if they do something with wide receiver Jeremy Maclin.

But he does offer them a known commodity under center. Where he sits on the depth chart, or behind whom, remains interesting.

At this point, it’s reasonable to think the Eagles will try to make a play for Marcus Mariota until they don’t, based on the way Kelly’s done business this offseason as much as their former college ties.

But even if they can’t land the Oregon quarterback, Sanchez offers them someone to push Nick Foles.

That’s a lot of money to give to a backup QB.

I think Sanchez could be used as trade bait for when the Eagles try to trade up for Mariota (unless of course they’re trying to make a deal with the Jets). But why keep Sanchez at $5.5 million guaranteed when you’ll get the same result out of Nick Foles who only makes $1.5 million this year?

Whew…….Tennessee dodged a big bullet there…..now back to your second round draft pick??????

    Remember there is always Tebow…..

  4. wizwix says: Mar 8, 2015 7:30 PM

Boy, Philly fans are going to go NUTS when they don’t draft Mariota. It’s nothing if not a foregone conclusion on their message boards that Kelly is going to do whatever he can to get his QB (Including manipulating the roster to get rid of old, AHEM, no, highly used, AHEM, no, expensive – yeah that’s it – expensive talent to free up space for Mariota).

Can you imagine the riot that is going to ensue when the team doesn’t get their desired QB?? Those cries of Kelly, franchise maker will turn into Kelly, franchise-killer!

    I’ve got my popcorn ready…

Wow that’s a lot of money to mentor Mariota.

  7. TheDPR says: Mar 8, 2015 7:41 PM

Eagles fan here who hopes they do NOT get Mariota. Keep rolling with Foles as the 1, Sanchez as the 2, and improve the rest of the team.

  8. jh500 says: Mar 8, 2015 7:42 PM

That’s not backup money. There’s going to be a competition.

  9. sumkat says: Mar 8, 2015 7:43 PM

Under 5 mil for 2 years is about standard for a veteran backup. I mean, I’m not really big on the signing, the guy proved last year they can’t win with him under center, but it’s hardly an outlandish amount of money.

Also, radio is Philly is reporting that Maclin will also be back on a 4 year deal. Obviously that’s nothing official, but at this point, nothing is

  10. gka33 says: Mar 8, 2015 7:45 PM

I have seen the three trophies thank you! This coming from a team that moved their stadium closer to b’more to prevent Charm City from having the opportunity for Two more trophies! Oh, what have you done for your city lately? I think the Ravens have done much better as of late!

  11. noneckinc says: Mar 8, 2015 7:46 PM

Logicalvoicesays…now if the Redskins could win a superbowl without it being a strike year..that would be something. Until then enjoy your cheap trophies. Your scrubs are better than others scrubs. You dolt.

@logicalvoicesays they should show the redskins games on the History Channel because all your fans talk about is the past

But people here said it was a sure bet he was going to Buffalo to reunite with Ryan. I guess not….

  16. captbuff says: Mar 8, 2015 8:31 PM

But, but, but YOU said (in multiple posts) that he was going to join Rex Ryan in Buffalo. You said (despite Sanchez holding Ryan’s teams back for years) that Ryan would want him!

No way you pay that much for a clip board holder. Meeting your starting QB Philly.

Maclin, DJax, McCoy, Cole all gone, but at least you still have the Sanchize in the hizzey, Philly fan, lol. Championship, never mind that Chip’s 3-11 vs. winning teams over his first 2 seasons, and that was with those premium players.

  20. aroel79 says: Mar 8, 2015 8:52 PM

    Maclin to KC

  21. fordmandalay says: Mar 8, 2015 8:52 PM

Sanchez is comfortably settling into his career for the next decade – sitting on the sidelines in a rocking chair reading magazines, getting paid millions per year, and no more harsh glare of the spotlight, fan hate, and pressure of being a starting NFL quarterback anymore. Sweet deal. Wonder if he’ll still be bagging supermodels though?

  22. wallabear says: Mar 8, 2015 8:56 PM

Kelly and his Eagles will never gain a Super Bowl berth unless they trade up to No.6 with the Jets to get Mariota.

  23. trainwrecksryan says: Mar 8, 2015 8:57 PM

That’s a lot of money for third-stringer (behind Foles and Mariota)…

  24. abninf says: Mar 8, 2015 9:02 PM

    Well, it’s confirmed. They’re a Dream Team.

Let Maclin go and keep this guy, you stop taking your medication Chip fools.

  27. keepyerstickontheice says: Mar 8, 2015 9:38 PM

Well, if Cap’n ButtFumble isn’t going to Buffalo as we were all promised, and Vick isn’t going to Buffalo as we were all promised, then it must be Tebow. It has to be Tebow, despite the fact that they’ve agreed to sign Cassell, Tebow will be going to Buffalo.

    =========

Let’s talk about how free agency works. Jeremy Maclin chose to leave for Kansas City. We have no idea whether the Eagles offered him a competitive offer, or if he even gave them an opportunity to do so. It’s quite possible that Maclin simply wanted to play for Andy Reid again. We have no idea and won’t find out for several days.

But let’s go ahead and bash Chip Kelly with no information.

  29. sportnut92 says: Mar 8, 2015 10:49 PM

Up until this move I was all on board with the Eagles off season moves.

This is the NFL not the NCAA, if Chip let’s Nick Foles go it is going to come back to haunt him, for the rest of his career.

  30. courtjester1234 says: Mar 8, 2015 11:47 PM

I’m starting to thing Jeffy got duped and hired a guy who is destroying the team with moves only a Timmy from South Park MIGHT to be able to comprehend. We aready have Nothing to look forward to this summer with base ball. the Stinxers? don’t get me started. and I admire what Hexy is doing, but it will be a couple years! And now Chip Kelly (who the heII calls themselves Chip?) is killing the team singlehanded.

  31. nothingbuttthetruth says: Mar 9, 2015 12:43 AM

Here’s an idea: Every Eagles fan who doesn’t like Kelly’s moves simply stop rooting for the team. That’s it – pick another team or take a few years off until he’s “back in college”.

How quickly all of you will come running back, Eagles foam finger on one hand, beer in the other, when it’s proven (once again) – and I know this is a tough concept for many of you to comprehend – that a professional football coach, a guy who does this for a living and at the highest level – knows more about the sport than you do.

Feel free to flee. Just be prepared to apologize when you come slinking back – and you will, when this teams wins and wins BIG.

  32. mogogo1 says: Mar 9, 2015 10:27 AM

Too much money for a backup QB. And too much attention to the QB position in general given their problems last season on offense could all be traced directly to the decline in the running game.
