The Dolphins have parted ways with several members of the 2014 team as they clear cap space ahead of the expected signing of Ndamukong Suh, but they’ve decided they want to hold onto one of their restricted free agents.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that defensive end Derrick Shelby is getting a second-round tender from the team. The move ensures Shelby will either be back with the team for a $2.35 million salary or that the Dolphins will have a chance to match any other offer that comes his way. If they don’t they’ll receive a second-round pick.

Shelby has played in 47-of-48 games for the Dolphins over the last three seasons and recorded 5.5 sacks over the 2013 and 2014 campaigns. He was suspended briefly by the team following an arrest last year, but has otherwise been a key part of their defensive line rotation.

Unless someone bowls him over with an offer, he should remain one in 2015 alongside Suh, Cameron Wake and anyone else that winds up on the roster for next system.
