Cornerback Darrelle Revis is once again a free agent, able to sign with any team. But if he picks a new team, it could be one of his old teams.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the sense in New England is that Revis will be a Jet.
The Jets drafted Revis in 2007, and they traded him to the Buccaneers in 2013. Tampa Bay cut him after one season, and he landed with the Patriots.
Revis is believed to be willing to take less to stay in New England. The question is how much less? The sweet spot possibly begins at roughly $2 million per year in total compensation. Also, a willingness to fully guarantee three years of the contract could help make the difference.
If Revis chooses the Jets, it’ll be interesting to see whether the Patriots urge the NFL to investigate whether the Jets further tampered with Revis by giving his representatives hard numbers before Revis became a free agent. The Patriots already have accused the Jets of tampering based on public comments from owner Woody Johnson.
The tampering charges arose in part from a desire to scare the Jets away from pursuing Revis. That apparently didn’t work.
