Report: Eagles not planning to sign Tim Tebow at this time

Getty Images

It appears that any visions of Tim Tebow and Mark Sanchez joining up for another ride will have to be put on ice.

The football world was buzzing on Monday when word broke that Tebow was working out as a quarterback for the Eagles, but it looks like we’ll have to keep waiting if Tebow is going to get another chance at an NFL job. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Tebow’s visit to the Eagles on Monday has come to an end and that the team has no plans to sign the former Bronco, Jet and Patriots “at this time.”

While the move would have fit into both the unpredictable Eagles offseason and coach Chip Kelly’s habit of zigging where others might zag, it would have been far more surprising if the day ended with Tebow holding a contract.

He has worked with throwing mechanics guru Tom House, who has worked with Tom Brady and Drew Brees, but it would be quite a gamble to think that Tebow’s turned into the consistent, accurate thrower that NFL teams need at quarterback since we’ve last seen him.

  1. Does anyone really think that Bradford is going to be the franchise q/b????? Chippy is zigging and zagging to get Mariota in the draft…lol…. As a ‘Boys fan, I’m not holding my breath that Murray does not end up with the Jags, Raiders, or Titans. I guess time will tell. I do wish we could have kept him, but that’s the way it goes 😦

  2. As a Giants fan, I’d be willing to give the Eagles not one but TWO roster exemptions and a $10M credit on cap space if that signed that slug.

  3. It has been a lot of pressure on the front office of the Eagles because of all the changes. They needed a something to bring up moral so Chip was like, “I know what will get everyone a good laugh around here. Lets bring in Tebow and watch him throw a football.” Tomorrow Charles Barkley will come by to hit some golf balls.

  4. (1) Bring him in and let him master your offense from all points of view.

    (2) Insert him into the lineup to make up for the lost/ would-be James Casey snaps.

    (3) THEN allow him to consult/coach other players who I assume (by new professional culture the Eagles are establishing) would have no issue to learn from Timmy T

  5. the “Chip’ster” . . loves screwing with the media.

You guys bit . . hook – line – sinker.

  6. If Tebow were a more polished NFL QB than teams would be more willing to look past the fact that he is essentially a distraction machine. Aside from one perfect game-winning pass to Demaryius Thomas, I can’t think of anything he has done up to this point that would warrant him being welcomed back onto an NFL team. His greatest attributes, his character and leadership, don’t put points onto the board…which is the name of the game regardless of how great a guy you are.

  7. Chip: I have great ideas for how to maximize your talents:

Tebow: I will only play QB. I am a QB.

Chip: Alright, guess you don’t want to play the NFL.

Tebowites: HE NEVER GOT A FAIR CHANCE! WAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Can people please put an end to the Tebow’s a Christian, ergo he’s blackballed from the NFL narrative? It defies all logic.

Polamalu and Russell Wilson are just as outspoken about their Christianity, that hasn’t hurt their careers at all.

  9. Hey, if they can call EJ Manuel and Matt Cassel QB’s, why not Tebow?

His arm is just as strong as Peyton Manning’s too.

  10. Tebow makes good business sense. You’d make more than his salary in about 1 week in jersey sales alone.

He’s not a good football player, but he would be the most popular third QB and could help you prepare for a running QB from the scout team.

Not sure if it’s worth the distraction, though. There are still many delusional fans that would immediately be calling very loudly for him to start. Because they are insane.

  11. A little research and one can easily connect the dots.

Chip Kelly and Urban Meyer are very close. Urban Meyer views Tim Tebow almost like a son. It’s not a stretch that Kelly gave Tebow a workout as a favor to a friend and to help drum up some buzz for Tebow. People are talking about Tebow today, even if the Eagles have no intention of signing him.

Do you really think he wasted the time of his personnel people just to screw with the media? I would want him fired if I was a fan and thought that. The Eagles didn’t exactly tear it up last year and can spend time “screwing ” with the media.

  13. Chip’s just screwing with everybody (media, throlls, haters) now. Gotta love it!

  14. It’s funny seeing comments that Tebow is better than half the QB’s in the league. HA HA HA

Tebow isn’t better than half the HIGH SCHOOL QB’s in a town with only one High School.

  15. Maybe Chip Kelly doesn’t care what anyone thinks and is being extremely thorough when building the roster now that he has more power. I’m loving it. Makes the league a lot more fun. If there was one offense Tebow could play in it would be Chips. If they land Mariota in a trade, I could see Tim being third string at best though.

  16. Please stop talking about Tebow being a viable option at H back, tight end, or anything other than a QB.

First, he has already said that he won’t change positions.
Second, he can’t catch. At all.
Third, he didn’t just work with a QB coach to go play H back.

  17. Tebow as a back-up in that system makes sense to me. Same with Vince Young.

Both QB’s have proven they can win games; albeit, not the “way” traditional QB’s can.

As stop-gap during an injury, he can get it done. I really don’t get why he (and VY) aren’t holding a clipboard somewhere.

Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder, Whitehurst, McCown, Fitzpatrick, Shaub, etc…aren’t nearly as talented as Tebow or Vince Young.

  18. Do you really think he wasted the time of his personnel people just to screw with the media?

    Yes Yes and Yes !

This comes on the heels of Tebow not being on the participants list for the upcoming veterans combine.

Tebow had been working out with Tom House.
The veteran scouting combine will be held March 22.

    Chip did him a solid.

  19. Tebow is better than many current starting QBs in the league, and he is better than every QB currently on the Eagles roster.

  20. “It’s funny seeing comments that Tebow is better than half the QB’s in the league. HA HA HA

Tebow isn’t better than half the HIGH SCHOOL QB’s in a town with only one High School.”

Except he’s arguably the greatest college QB in history.

Not a Tebow fan but its so easy to spot those who have a bias one way or the other.

Tebow’s a great NFL QB- Bias for him

Tebow’s worse than half the high school QB’s – Bias against him

  21. The Eagles watched him throw, that’s why they didn’t sign him. When you watch him throw live, you walk away amazed at how bad of a QB he really is.

  22. Arizona has Tebow instead of Ryan Lindley(?) you dont think they go further in playoffs last year? Seriously my gator homerness aside this guy isnt better than lindley ej manuel gabbert geno smith whitehurst johnny manziel etc? i obviously know were not talking elite starter here but for petes sake why does andy dalton keep getting bailouts after ZERO playoff wins?

somebody should give the man a chance to make a squad kids a winner

  23. Playoff games won since 2011:

    Tim Tebow – 1
    Mark Sanchez – 0
    Sam Bradford – 0
    Philadelphia Eagles – 0

I wish Chip Kelly or someone would pay attention.

  24. Please don’t think he could be a TE, the jets tried that when the fins played the Jets, I was in the stands and saw it. Sanchez threw him a pass and he forgot to turn around. The ball bounced off of the back of his helmet for an incomplete. He was wide open, could have been a big play.

Unfortunately it is quite thinly disguised why those same so-called “Christians” hypocritically whine about Tebow not being in the NFL but ignore Polamalu and Wilson’s devout religion and superb careers. Polamalu and Wilson don’t “look” like Tebow to them. It is little more than that, sadly.

  26. Let’s pray for Tim to get the opportunity to return to the NFL. Down on one knee and start Tebowing.
Just give Tim a chance and he will inspire his teammates to greatness and help to restore values and decency to the NFL.
    Make it happen Chip.

  27. If he turns Bradford into Mariotta, then he can run his college offense…but he’ll need a backup, one who can run, and run a college offense. Let’s see, who is available that fits that description…

  28. So he still couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn?
    ————————————————————–
From what he’s said about his love life, he can’t hit the barn side of a broad either.

  29. I almost want to see Tebow start a game just to have another round of Tebowmania. After a while you miss the crazies who don’t understand football come out of the woodwork crying tears of joy when Tebow wins 13-12 on 60 yd FG and making excuses when he gets blown out 45-10 by the Buffalo Bills and looks utterly awful.

  30. Can people please put an end to the Tebow’s a Christian, ergo he’s blackballed from the NFL narrative? It defies all logic.

Polamalu and Russell Wilson are just as outspoken about their Christianity, that hasn’t hurt their careers at all.

Russell Wilson is a yoga practicing hindu. Polamalu, Reggie nor Kurt ever made any converts like Tebow did in 2011.

  31. I’m no Evangelical, but there’s got to be a place for Tebow on some team in this league. On the other hand, if the Jets released him maybe there is no hope.

  32. So many Kelly haters. The guy brings in a qb and works him out and he gets blasted for it. He’s a great locker room guy, high football IQ, and has a playoff win on his resume. Not saying he should be signed, but why all the negative feedback for a workout to see if his game improved?

  33. OK, here’s way it should go, trade Bradford to Washington for Morris and swap 1st rounders. Washington could dump RGIII and draft one of the young RB’s in the draft. Kelly can sign Tebow and have every decent RB in the East under contract. That’s how you play fantasy football.

  34. Little respect for someone who realizes sex doesn’t make a man, nor X babies out of we’d lock. How many players point to the heavens and nothing mentioned. If Tebow hadn’t mentioned his sex life he would be playing . Too bad players have to be immoral, sex ,With X women , show signs of violence and considered men. In God we trust..

That would be an amazing stat if football weren’t a team game.

the kid is a winner – crazy someone doesn’t give him a chance
    =========

Not really. He was actually only 7-4 as a starter in 2011 on a team that went 14-2 the season after he left.

He was blown out 45-10 by the Lions. He lost his last 3 regular season games, including a 40-14 drubbing by the 6-10 Bills in Week 16 with their playoff lives on the line. He lost again in Week 17 yet backed into the playoffs. He won a game that never should have been in Denver (the Steelers had the better record) and then got his doors blown off 45-10 the next week in New England.

In 8 total wins, he outscored his opponents by a total of 44 points. In 5 losses, he was outscored by 128.

He completed less than 50% of his passes, which is just about impossible to do in today’s pass happy NFL.

He is terrible. Please accept this and move on with your life.

  37. The barn side of a broad comment was awesome! If you thumbed that down, you have no sense of humor and I pity you

  38. “He can be a receiver and do trick plays like Edleman!”

    ======================================

Only one problem–Edleman is a far superior receiver AND quarterback.

If Tebow is good at something, throwing the football is not on the list.

  39. Stop with the TE nonsense.
    He isn’t big enough (235).
    He’s never run routes
And most importantly if he ever tried to block anyone he would get his head put through his ass.

Frankly it’s an insult to every TE in the league that’s worked at the position for years or is an athletic freak (Graham and Gates). Tebow is neither. Now add to that the fact that he has refused to change positions.

Tebow needs to go to Canada or the Arena League if they’ll have him and work on his passing game. Of course he’s refused to do that also. Pure hubris.

  40. Nice guy, but just needs to go away. No place for him and the Tebowites in the NFL. His fans have cost him a career in football.

  41. Perhaps Tebow is Chip’s response to the fans and media who say that with all the recent changes, the Eagles don’t have a “prayer” to make the playoffs.

  42. Only the dumbest team in the NFL would sign tiny tim teblow, the most useless pice of trash to ever disgrace an NFL uniform. Hey tiny tim teblow how wrong were your detractors that you couldn’t make it in the NFL? You were the only one who was wrong thinking you deserved to be in the NFL.
