Report: If Eagles can trade Barkley, they’ll likely sign Tebow

Reuters

Tim Tebow to the Eagles isn’t dead yet.

Although the Eagles didn’t sign Tebow after working him out this week, they still might, according to Dianna Marie Russini of NBC 4 in Washington. According to Russini, the decision will hinge on whether the Eagles can find a taker for Matt Barkley in a trade. If they can, they would likely sign Tebow to become the third quarterback on their depth chart, behind Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez.

It’s an interesting question whether the Eagles could find a taker for Barkley. On the one hand, Barkley hasn’t played particularly well in limited action, with zero touchdown passes, four interceptions and a passer rating of 43.8. On the other hand, Barkley was once considered such a good prospect that when he decided to stay at USC for his senior season in 2012, people thought he might have been the first overall pick in the draft. All it takes is one NFL team to be enamored with his talent for the Eagles to get an offer.

And then Chip Kelly could sign Tebow. Although no one thinks Tebow would have any chance of beating out Bradford or Sanchez for the starting job, it’s not unthinkable that Tebow could make the Eagles’ roster as a third-string quarterback. Most people around the NFL believe that Tebow’s career is over, but Kelly doesn’t think the way most people around the NFL think. He may be ready to give Tebow another chance.

  1. Has anyone been more forgotten after being drafted than Matt Barkley? I actually was searching for the kid the other day as I figured he must have been cut by now with all the QB moves the Eagles have made since he was drafted without mention of him. Sure enough he’s still there blending into the background.

  2. I’m not sure I buy it. It’s not like they need to clear roster space. If they wanted to bring him in, they could just do it. Chip had 5 QBs on the off-season roster in 2013 and 4 last year.

  3. No one knows how much his passing skills may have improved. It’s a long shot but let’s make sure the guy with religion doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt from libtardo media.

  4. He’d never see the field…as QB. Tebow will bring that culture chip wants too. As an Eagles fan Im all for it.

  5. God owes it to Philadelphia. Tebow owes it to God. This is literally a match made heaven. Make it happen.

  6. Again with this reporter

Dianna Marie Russini of NBC 4 in Washington???

Will she actually be right for change?

Then again, we can waste our time on a certain QB that can’t play and got his butt saved by Matt Prater.

  7. @shakdelrio
How about because he has been cut more times than Tebow, is washed-up and has had FAR less success in the NFL recently than Tebow?

    Maybe THAT’S why….

  8. Has there ever been an “Intervention” for an NFL head coach?!?
Unconventional is one thing, but Kelly’s “March Madness” is beginning to look like a bad acid trip…

  9. I’m sure some team somewhere will offer something for a largely untested 3rd round QB. Right?

Which would probably mean that the Chip Kelly Off-season Magical Mystery Tour continues unabated.

We’re going to need more popcorn.

no body wants barkley, nobody wants tebow and #nobodyhasitbetter

Dude no offense to you personally but your team has totally fallen apart this offseason. About 25 teams have it better now. It’s time to stop saying that.

  11. Not sure how this guy isn’t already on a roster somewhere. Surely he is good enough to be a third option. What do I know sitting from my couch…

  12. He’s trading Barkley to San Francisco for Kaepernick ,then he’s going to package Bradford and Kaepernick for Jeff Garcia !

  13. I wouldn’t mind the move. A third stringer is a third stringer. With Tebow perhaps Chip thinks he can implement some type of read option package for him. All that said, not sure what Chip thinks Barkley is worth, a 6th or 7th rd pick maybe?

  14. Thank Goodness for Tim Tebow!!!! Hope this marks the end of all the threads about that quitter that used to play for SF!

  15. Dianna Russini can barely keep up with Redskins news, how is she getting insider information about what the Niners and Eagles want to do? She is easy on the eyes, if you guys get what I mean. lol

  16. Not for nothing but chip kelly sure has got my attention. from the outside looking in he seems like he is gonzo nuts. i cannot wait to see what happens with the eagles. either way it is going to be something wild.

  17. 3rd string QB – such a non-story…except it’s TEBOW, which, to some, makes it a HUGE story.

Chip is having so much fun just screwing with everyone! He’s pulling the strings, and the media and fans are flopping around to his every whim. Hysterical to watch.

Only 3rd year in the league and already the NFL’s Master manipulator.

  18. Barkley is a West Coast guy if there ever was one and the Eagles never should have drafted him. He is a very smart QB with an average arm who in the right WC system could be a viable option.

  19. Hey, with all those stupid moves, this team definitely could use some help from Jesus. So why not?

  20. Chip Kelly is ten steps ahead of all of you. Tim Tebow would be the third string QB. If he had to play at QB, the Eagles are screwed. If Matt Barkley has to play(already happened), the Eagles are screwed. Anyone who gets to their 3rd string QB is screwed.

But, unlike Matt Barkley, Tim Tebow might just be able to contribute at TE, H-back, or possibly be a very real threat inside the 10 yard line(where the Eagles struggled mightily last year, probably cost them the AZ and SF games).

  21. Chip Kelly is a breath of fresh air, who doesn’t think like the closed-minded team execs and writers who ignore Tebow’s NFL accomplishments because he doesn’t look or play like a typical QB. It was that type of approach that kept Doug Flutie out of the league for so many years. Kudos to Kelly for at least not sticking inside the obtuse box of conventionality that encumbers the minds of most NFL decision-makers and commentators.

  22. remember just a very short time ago we all kinda felt sorry for the Brown fans, you poor poor Eagle fans.

  23. Wait this doesn’t make any sense. It’s March, not mid-August. Why does Kelly need to trade anyone to bring in another QB?

  24. I think it would be cool for Tebow to get a shot again. I think Dallas could take a look at Barkley as a long term hold. Trade a 7th rounder for him

  25. The Cowboys should pay another team to make an offer today for Barkley, just so the Eagles bring Tebow in. Perfect payback for Murrray.

  26. Im a Broncos fan, and i’ll never forget our 8-8 season with Tebow, It was one of the greatest seasons ever, and i’m not religious. This kid is pretty awesome all around. He needs a chance, so many crappy NFL Qbs out there.

  27. I think it’s a good signing, he’s the 3rd string so he’s not going to start at QB, and I think Chip will use him creatively. He can just call him a QB but use him like a FB/TE, I think that’s the best way to use him, since he doesn’t want to not be a QB.

  28. Bradford and Tebow are just smoke screens. I think Chip’s going for the USC trifecta – he really wants Matt Leinart.

  29. To the poster who said Chip Kelly’s inherited a 20 win team from Andy Reid. Do you watch or follow the NFL ? Reid’s last Eagle team won 4 games and two wins were gifts.

  30. Chip Kelly is looking like he’s going to dominate the NFL. The guy in control of the roster is by far the most important person in an organization, and Kelly just got that power. Bradford is an elite QB, Sanchez is a real good young veteran QB, Barkley is better than half the starters in the league right now, and all Tim Tebow does is win football games (college and Pro). So if Kelly is as good at the other positions as he is at choosing QBs, the Eagles are going to be the dominant team as long as Kelly is in charge. Kelly seems to be copying Bill Belichick’s attitude of disregarding what the other teams are thinking, and do what you think is best for your team. It’s working in New England. Eagles fans should be ecstatic. I’m not even an Eagles fan and I’m excited.

  31. I guess this is Kelly’s way of playing with fire. If you want the devilish circus atmosphere, it’s yours.

  32. This whole “let Tebow be an tight end” when he’s never done it, isn’t tall or long enough, and can’t catch or block, is an insult to all legitimate tight ends everywhere.

He also can’t throw, but hey, who needs that at the QB position in the NFL?

Contrarian argument: (he’s a winner!) Hilarious.

It seems like he’s a genuinely nice person. I’ll give him that.

I love it when 20 year old guys think they’ve been around the block a few times.

  35. I can’t wait to march down Broad Street with Timmy………..first of all, I’d like to thank my Saviour, Jesus Christ…….

  36. It might not take a team willing to gamble on barkey.

It might only take a team that wants to have the possibility of another team thr they happen to play against this season starting Tim Tebow to make the trade.

  37. In the event the Eagles sign Tebow, you can be sure that Kelly would figure out a way to use him that people haven’t thought of. The guy has talent, just not as a conventional QB.

  38. Hey Dianna, if Chip wants Tebow so bad, why doesn’t he just cut Barkley, rather than trying to make a trade that won’t happen? #flawed logic

  39. I can’t believe Kelly isn’t smart enough to understand the Tebow Circus that follows him everywhere he goes – a horde of hate-filled, right wing faux-Christian nutjobs who will make his life miserable unless their talent-free figurehead is treated like the second coming. It won’t be about Tebow’s ability – it never is. He’s a symbol and a lightning rod for the insane.

  40. Lets correct something right now. He won’t have to beat out Bradford. Sam probably blew out his ACL when he heard about this. Sanchez? Really? I’m thinking if Tebow makes the team, he’s 2nd string by week 2, Bradfords on the IR or traded, and Sanchez is, well, being Sanchez. Now tell me how crazy it sounds…

  41. The Eagles are sounding like Vikng fans who talked of trading Ponder. You might think Barkley or Ponder has trade value and that’s your opinion but the market of the other 31 GM’s think otherwise.

    Good luck to all involved.

  42. Love that the 3rd string QB for this team attracts so much attention. The Eagles truly are America’s Team.

  43. It’s not just a matter of talent — Tebow carries a lot of baggage along with him, and a media circus trails him wherever he goes. I would’t want that if I were a H.C.

  44. Sesame Street says they will trade for Barkley. They say they really miss him!!! Willing to trade a first round pick and Oscar the Grouch!!!!

  45. Tebow isn’t actually that bad a 3rd QB because unlike most (see the guy from Arizona) he has a weapon that can do enough to win a game. His running, particularly in an offense that can use it could be enough to gain a few crucial first downs and get a score on the board that can be defended (say 17-20 points).

Denver used this formula to get to and win a play off game. That’s better than Arizona did when they were down to a 3rd string guy.

  46. No chance to beat out two guys who, playoffs included, he has a better passer rating than? Back when he couldn’t throw the ball that well, which is something that’s probably been fixed? Why’s that?

  47. Put down the crack pipe Chip.

If we behaved like this at a regular job we’d be drug tested!

  48. I think Chip just enjoys all the attention he’s getting.
Sooner or later, he’ll have to realize that he needs Defense to win in this League.

His Offense rarely gives them a legitimate blow.

  49. 4thquartermagic says: Mar 17, 2015 7:16 PM

My hope is Burger King gives Chip a double whopper for Barkley.

Howard Eskin dosent have two burgers to pay with

  50. Jeff Lurie has allowed his organization to become the laughing stock of the NFL. Jeffy, sell the team and stick to the ballet on Sundays during football season!

  51. LOL! Please sign Tebow Chip! They could make holy Smoothies together to cast out Riley’s evil demons.

  52. IF Chip signs Tebow, a QB no other team has shown any interest in for 2 years, better brace yourself for the return of TO.

  53. Then there would be a very good chance Tebow would end up the starter. Bradford will be out for the season with an injury after one game, Sanchez will suck, so Tebow will be all they have left. Who would be dumb enough to trade for Barkley?

  54. I would say Tebow is probably better than most if not all 3rd string QBs in the NFL right now and probably better than some 2nd string QBs.

Problem is that most teams don’t want to put up with the media circus that follows him. Too much of a distraction, unfortunately.

I mean, look at how much press this is getting! He is being considered to be a 3rd string QB in Philly and he is making headlines like he is going to be the starter there. Ridiculous. I feel sorry for the guy.

  55. Chip is a genius! The Barkley trade will happen and all he wanted Bradford for was to help sign Demarco Murray. Tebow & Murray running Chip’s offensel Genius!

  56. more Tebow haters here and I don’t get it. The guy is entertaining and that’s what the game is really about. As a lifelong Bears fan I’m going to buy the NFL ticket when all the Bears games are here on free TV just because of Chip. (if he signs Tebow). Everyone here seems to forget that there are 31 NFL teams that won’t win the Super Bowl next year and right now all 31 won’t be able to blame Tebow.

PS I am a practicing agnostic.

  57. I am still surprised that Tebow is not on an NFL roster. When he was with Denver they were an average team, but I watched him single handedly defeat the Raiders in Oakland. Once they let him loose, he couldnt be stopped. Of course he couldnt throw a decent pass to save his life, but with 10k reps with new mechanics….

  58. Most people around the NFL believe that Tebow’s career is over, but Kelly doesn’t think the way most people around the NFL think. He may be ready to give Tebow another chance.

    —————————————-

All Chip is saying is give Tebow a chance.

  59. If Tom Brady’s QB mentor says Tebow is ready, then maybe that’s someone to whom it is worth listening.

As for Matt Barkley, the Eagles need to contact the Bears on this. Cutler is on his way out in Chicago as soon as the Bears can cut him loose without killing their salary cap with guaranteed money they’ll owe. The Bears will have a new starting QB in 2016 – why not Barkley?

  60. pretty sure they aren’t telling this lady in d.c. their plan for barkley and tebow.

not sure what one could expect to get for barkley. he didn’t look very good in his limited chances.

  61. When the Eagles sign Tebow and trade Sanchez to the Bills it will destroy the Internets. So excited!

  62. Barkley went from having the opportunity to being the number one pick to losing a roster spot for Tebow. Think about that for a second

  63. I don’t know. My memory is that Tebow was way better when he had to play fast because they were trailing. May be a good fit to be in a fast paced offense where he doesn’t have time to think, just react.

  64. lega1eagle says: Mar 17, 2015 10:43 PM

Laugh all you want. You won’t be laughing when Chip brings the Eagles to the “Promised Land” and wins us a second Super Bowl title.
    =========

When did the Eagles win their first Super Bowl title?

  65. Whoever the starter is, as soon as he throws his first incompletion, the Tebow crazies will be demanding that Tebow be made the starter immediately and will throw epic tantrums if he isn’t. Probably will picket the Eagle front offices.

  66. So this means there is a team out there that would rather have Matt Barkley and one less draft pick than just sign Tebow and keep all their draft picks?

  67. Dallas should trade for Barkley, for no other reason than to let Tebow preach to and pray for the Eagles players. And maybe Tebow takes a few reps away from the first two QB’s on the roster… Trade for Barkley, if he can’t hold a practice squad position, let him go… But Tebow to Eagles would make my offseason much more enjoyable.

  68. Bradford gets injured easily, and Tebow beat him in college. Mark Sanchez is the king of interceptions and the ButtFumble. Tebow isn’t God and he isn’t perfect, but he’s had less injuries and turnovers than Sanchez or Bradford.
