Zimmer doesn’t have much to say about Adrian Peterson

Getty Images

Tucked at the bottom of Sid Hartman’s article regarding Vikings coach Mike Zimmer’s preference for a larger Teddy Bridgewater in 2015 is a fairly small quote regarding Zimmer’s views on running back Adrian Peterson.

“Well Adrian is under contract with us and we’re excited to get him back here with his teammates and get him back playing,” Zimmer said.

It’s believed that Peterson would like to be under contract with a different team, and that Peterson hopes a trade will be made at the league meetings in Arizona.  In two different appearances this year on PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio, Zimmer said that if Peterson definitely wants out of Minnesota, the team would accommodate him.

The process of accommodating Peterson could indeed unfold in Arizona, with the Vikings finding a trade partner (perhaps the Cardinals) and moving Peterson, who turned 30 on Saturday.  Or perhaps Zimmer has been overruled by the folks who write the checks.  Absent a trade package reflecting Peterson’s actual value to the Vikings, why should the Wilfs say anything other than “play for us or play for no one”?

Meanwhile, it’ll be interesting to see whether Zimmer reiterates his position that, if Peterson wants out, he’ll get what he wants.  It could be that, before Zimmer is ever asked that question again by the media, a trade will be worked out.

  1. It’s very possible Zimmer could be lying, or that he is okay with Peterson leaving and rebuilding but Spielman has the ultimate authority and desperately wants Peterson back. Either way it’s turning into a big mess.

  2. Will he be off the exempt list by the time the season starts?

What if the 6 game suspension (after he is off the exempt list) is upheld?

Who would trade for a 30 year old running back that isn’t on the field for pass plays?

What value can the vikings salvage?

We can only wait for the next installment of this soap opera.

  3. The first comment above is wrong on so many levels. First of if you can’t forgive AP then how can you even think of a fair and justice society? However, this situation needs to be put away in one way or another.

  4. Nothing like digging through a tiny sid hartman column for some Sunday afternoon material. Only the Minnesota Viking articles consistently produce high amount of PFT comments. It’s kind of strange. So many packer trolls…

  5. All this really tells us is that the Vikings’ PR team wrote an extremely generic response for Zimmer to use on the subject with the goal of accomplishing 2 things:

    1) Don’t hurt Peterson’s market value (as his previous comments about accommodating Peterson did)

    2) Support the relationship with Peterson in case of a return

  6. AP needs to quit listening to his agent and quit feeling sorry for himself. You screwed up and you are mad at the Vikings???Where are all the uneducated pack trolls?

  7. Wilf’s made it clear, when they hired Warren as the COO. They don’t want him back! Trade him for as much as the market offers and move on.

Nothing much to say about the Vikes…except another 4-12 season

    Odd considering they’ve never had a 4-12 season…

  9. Peterson prefers an open-air stadium. It’s the only venue large enough for his big head.

  10. Zimmer doesn’t have personnel authority. And if AP really doesn’t want to play for my team, I’d just as soon they trade him to a team in the AFC so we don’t have to see him again. And don’t send him to a team he wants — send him to the Jags or the Raiders who have higher draft positions (maybe then he’ll see the grass ain’t always greener).

  11. The Vikings will end up on the short end of this switch…..err…stick, but they don’t deserve to. Peterson should be on his hands and knees thankful for the opportunity to play again. He should take a huge paycut and talk about how anxious he is to get back out there.

Nope. That’s not what he’s doing. He actually feels he is worth the high pay grade and trade value…..combined.

The Vikings may have to eat this one, because he won’t be worth a plug nickel if he returns to Minnesota……but he’ll be paid a king’s ransom.

  12. I don’t get it, Zimmer’s comment is no different that the other half dozen interviews where he said exactly the same thing so why is it making headlines now?

I seriously doubt that anything Zimmer says could really hurt Peterson’s trade value. His age, his fumbling in a championship game, his conviction for whipping a 4 year old child bloody and his inability to block on blitzes or catch out of the backfield has determined his trade value already. Which to say is a 5th rounder if Spielman could find a team to eat a $15 million cap number.

  13. Nothing much to say about the Vikes…except another 4-12 season

Actually, the Vikings have never had a 4-12 season. They have had 17 divisional titles though. And since this is undoubtedly a Packer idiot who impressively managed to put down their beer and block of cheese long enough to type that:

Since1970 merger-Losing seasons (Central or North):
    Lions -27
    Bears – 24
    Packers -16
    Vikings – 12

    That’s 12 losing seasons in 45 years…pretty pathetic!

  14. “Lions sure could use another RB and im sure he’d like to go to a contender.”

Which is it, the Lions or a contender?

  15. No, Wilfs wouldn’t do that. They see him as an asset, and rather than have that asset quit, they’d rather get SOMETHING for him. The bridge is burned. It’s time to move on and get a pick or two even if they’re later picks rather than have him quit and receive nothing for him.

  16. What if the 6 game suspension (after he is off the exempt list) is upheld?

Who would trade for a 30 year old running back that isn’t on the field for pass plays?
    ——
His suspension was already over, and he wasn’t going to be suspended for the start of the season.

AP’s career receiving numbers are on par with Lynch. It’s a myth that he isn’t valuable on third down.

  17. As a coach, Zimmer knows that you don’t want a guy on your team who doesn’t want to be there. I’m sure they’re trying to convince Adrian he should want to come back, but at the same time they’re trying to determine what they can get for him. Spielman has the final say so they aren’t going to give him away, but Zimmer is going to put pressure on if Adrian doesn’t change his attitude.

  18. …or perhaps the Vikings are going to hold their ground. why should they be forced to give him away after they paid him 15 million last year when AP screwed the team over by his careless and indefensible actions. if im Spielman I’d tell AP and his punk agent either play for us, get us fair compensation in a trade (2 first round draft picks), or retire. Your choice.

    We are 4-12 without AP
    _________

They were 6-9 without AP last year, and he contributed virtually nothing in the game they won with him. They were 6-6 with Teddy as the starter in his rookie year, so I don’t see how they would get that much worse without AP this year.

  20. Sid Hartman also said this week that Christian Ponder would probably beat out Derek Carr and shock all the geniuses who didn’t think he was any good, so there’s that.

  21. All kinds of Viking fans talking about packer trolls but no actual packer trolls as of yet. What makes y’all think a guy named Bronx Bomber is a packer guy? Little gun shy aren’t y’all?

  22. Kapp11kramer9

Thank you!!! I don’t care about either of these teams (although I like Zim as a bengals fan), Vikings fan should use this statistic from hereon out and say SUCK IT PACK.

  23. Peterson is the missing piece in AZ.
Cardinals will have to give up draft picks; but in the exchange they become a instant contender in the NFC
a deal will be reached when the Vikings get what they feel is fair ccompensation.

    ——————-
Or perhaps you’re making a mountain out of a molehill.

  26. Well what IS his actual value Florio?

Do you know that the value of any good or service is what someone is willing to pay!!!

Yes we like to contort things and rig thing in this country…just look at the idiocy in our stock markets at all time highs when things ARE worse then ever.

I know people like to THINK that when everything is perfect for the seller, i.e. multiple bidders all vying for the contract of this guy and all these teams have ample room to take on his contract…then this would be the ‘actual’ value?

Not really. The actual value is what someone is willing to pay for it…whenever that good is up for sale.

Well AP is, and what he goes for is what someone is willing to trade for him. Now can Minnesota sit on him? Sure…but there’s no guarantee he’s going to play, and these next three years Minnesota could use a draft pick and that cap space that is created from a trade to load up for the future with Teddy Bridgewater.

So remember this Florio, his ACTUAL value isn’t what talking heads think in a fantasy football Madden 15 sense. It’s what some ACTUAL GM is ACTUALLY willing to part with in order to secure him.

If it’s Arizona or Tampa or Dallas or someone else, ALL 31 other teams KNOW he is on the market. We know there is an offer on the table from Arizona, and we should suspect that

Now if the GM can’t trade him because he’s scared of the backlash that delusional Vikings fans want a ‘Herschel Walker’ type trade, then he shouldn’t be a GM, because no one is going to give up even 1/5th of what the Vikings idiotically gave up for Herschel Walker (who by the way did have one good year..it wasn’t so bad of a trade for the player they got, it was just bad based on the compensation and the language of ‘if the players given to Dallas don’t start they turn into 2nd round picks’.)

So if the Vikings GM can’t get passed that trade and reflect the market value of AP, which is about a 3rd or 4th round pick (2nd at the absolute, positively, overpaying price most) then he shouldn’t be a GM. He should not listen to delusional fans, because no matter WHAT decision he makes, some Vikings fans are going to be pissed. At this point I’ve even read on Vikings boards that some don’t want him back. So no matter if they trade him for a 1st round pick…some are going to be pissed. A 2nd…a little bit more. A 3rd…a little more than that. Even if he comes back, some will be pissed. So don’t listen to the fans who expect a Herschel Walker type fantasy trade. It’s not going to happen.

AP can either sit, fake injury, or cause trouble… or he can garner you a pick and cap space for the future. Bridgewater’s time isn’t soon, it’s in a few years, it’s best to line up your stars for a run rather then have an aging AP when Bridgewater hits his prime around 2020.

But again Florio and other media, the value of ANY player isn’t what’s in your head, it’s what someone is willing to offer. No more. No less. If some team wants to give Minnesota a 2nd round pick for AP, then that’s what he’s worth.

What was Brandon Marshall worth? A 5th.

What was Mike Wallace who the Vikings JUST trade for worth? A 5th with a 7th coming back. No more no less. That’s what they are worth.

All 31 teams know, and by now Minnesota KNOWS who is interested and who isn’t. They probably even have an offer, maybe two. That’s what he’s worth. If they think it’s best to sit him and waste everything, him, their capspace, and not receive a pick, they can… but that would be dumb.

What did the Lions receive from taking that approach with Barry Sanders?

Crickets… They didn’t get anything. They wasted a player in his prime and got nothing for him. Spite is not the way a competent GM handles a team.

So Florio, it’s best to remember how things are valued and how they do so in the real world, because anyone can make up an overvalued or undervalued price based on their minds and perfect scenarios. But then again since America has gone so far off track, I don’t blame people for forgetting this rudimentary fact. But that was the reality we used to live in, now we live in a rigged fantasy…soon to be a hellish nightmare if we don’t wake up.

  27. We had 23 division titles in the 70’s, a record that is the envy of the entire Midwest! What could be better than that?

  28. This is more a cultural/societal problem than it is an Adrian Peterson/football problem. Everyone has an opinion on whether what Peterson did (or has been doing for years) was wrong, and to what degree. The sad part is, well, there are a lot of sad parts. Peterson’s kids aren’t the only kids being abused out there. But what really sucks for football fans is that up until a few months ago, Peterson’s name was starting to come up in conversations of the greatest RBs of all time. At the top are Jim Brown and Bo Jackson. Next are guys like Walter Payton, O.J. Simpson, Adrian Peterson, Barry Sanders, Gale Sayers. But Adrian Peterson doesn’t really think he did anything wrong to his kids. No wonder our prisons are over-crowded.

  29. Zimmer was in cincinnati when the Carson Palmer thing unfolded, right? Tell ap he’s a Viking or he retired. If he retires someone will come calling desperate mid season.

  30. Disgraced Viking coach Mike Zimmer is 0 for his career against Mike McCarthy and the Packers.

In fact, Zimmer is 0 for his career against every current regime in the NFC North. Now that’s what I call hapless and tasteless.

  31. What exactly is Peterson mad about. He went overboard disciplining his kid and a whole bunch of people view what he did ad child abuse. The Vikings initially let him play and then went along with (as did Peterson himself) a paid leave of absence while his legal issues were worked out to his best possible conclusion. If anybody should feel disrespected or cheated in this debacle, it is the Vikings. It really is a simple choice. Play for the Vikings and be paid more than he deserves, or, sit out and PAY the Vikings around $30K per day once the season starts. If I were the Vikings management, I’d tell him there will be no trade unless some kind of Herschel Walker deal is offered (not happening). If he shows up but shows no effort on he is combative, then suspend him for conduct detrimental, no pay, and recoup and no percentage of his bonus already paid. Hardball tactics are usually bad for future business but they are completely justified here. Good luck trying to get paid next year as a 31 year old RB who hasn’t played in almost 2 years.

  40. Even if the Vikings don’t have him, they will be at least a 10 win team. Like Moss, Owens, Chad Johnson, one man doesn’t make a team good!!! Like Montana, Rice, Taylor and Craig or Aikman, Smith, Harper and Irvin or Bradshaw, Harris, and Stallworth and Swann, it was a team effort. Go ahead and be selfish, see how that turns out for you. You can stay in Minnesota and understand that McKennan and Asiana will help carry the load with having Wallace, Johnson, and Rudolph spreading the field. Zimmer will have the Defense even better. BUT go to a team that doesn’t know you or how to play with you. But rember what you will be rembered for in 3 years when you career will Almost be over. Plan for your life after and out of football. Football will not be a career. You will hopefully still want to work for another 35 years.

Your right, being competitive year after year is no way to measure success. Yep they have lost four Super Bowls….3 of them to heavy favorites and 3 of the greatest teams of all time. Green Bay has been favored in ALL of theirs, so they have actually lost the same amount of favored Super Bowls as the Vikings……hmmm.

  44. What Zimmer wanted to say was “I wish Rick would trade the diva to Green Bay so the fans could troll their msg boards”

I still can’t believe how GB gave up in the championship game, it’s gotta suck chewing on that all off season lol

  45. Did Zimmer have leaves stuffed in his mouth? Anyone remember when Peterson reffered to himself as a slave? He was going to compete in the Olympics? Your under contract play or retire.

Now as AP is walking ‘free’, they have a “Welcome Home” sign….

As the O’ Jays sang, “they smile in your face all the time they…..”

  47. I find it seriously unlikely that Peterson beat his kids, because after 10 years in the NFL, if there’s one thing that Adrian Peterson and the Vikings has never done, it’s beat someone.

  48. Yeah, that was a bad end to the Championship game this year. Viking fans are all too familiar with having to chew on that all off season. Remember ’98 to Atlanta and ’09 to New Orleans? Still sting? Thankfully Green Bay has won the big one a few times and just knowing that is the bane of all Viking fans brings a smile to my face.

  50. Attention all troll losers bashing the Vikings, if we are such a nothing team, why do care so much to bash us? Are you infatuated with us? We could care less about your team. We are too busy having a life. Why don’t you get one!

  51. If I’m AP, just because the Vikings refuse to trade me doesn’t mean I have to play. Ever heard of pulling a Percy Harvin? Vikings remember him I’m sure. Pay me to sit the bench while I get over my headache. Who knows it could last all season.

  52. Zimmer had the right thing to say – Adrian is under contract with the Vikings and we are excited to get him back… The media is just killing this “story”.

  53. He will be traded on draft day as soon as people miss out on their RB’s. Self inflicted drama queen. Minnesotans are generally mild mannered forgiving people but this is overboard even for them. The Vikings didn’t do anything but protect their brand.

Time to go, trade for a linebacker!

  54. So the Vikings are stuck? Like Wallace, he is young enough to take on a 9 million contract. EVERY TEAM does not want to take on his contract, and some can’t!! If a team is ignorant enough to think one man makes a team, think again. Look at Payton manning!! Since he has been in Denver, how many Super bowls has he Won? But he fills the seats to get the fans to buy in. To be honest and not winning the super bowl can be almost more rewarding because of the the anticipation of winning. People want to go to games that they think will win. Like Jerry Jones, it’s a business to him. Put a competitive team on the field and fans will come. Doesn’t matter if Murray or peterson is in the backfield. Just put up points to excite the fans and try to win.

  55. Your right, being competitive year after year is no way to measure success.
    _____________

Year after year? Have you watched the Vikings play in the last 5 seasons? They have a 31-48-1 record and .3875 win%.

Since 2001 they have made 4 playoff appearances and made them back to back ONCE during that span. Winning 10 or more games in a season THREE times. Losing at least 10 games in 6 seasons, over the same span.

I am sure that some people remember when the Vikings were actually competitive as you may be thinking of, they just happened to remember Jimmy Carter being pres. and wearing disco outfits on the way to the theater to watch Star Wars.

You and I have different opinions when it comes to what “competitive” means.

  56. It almost seems like Peterson is trying to have it both ways, he apparently wants to play elsewhere next season, but there also has been no indication that he is willing to restructure his contract, for the Vikings or anyone else. This may be the sticking point that is holding up any possible deals with other teams. I’m sure this will all get resolved at some point, because at the end of the day, he wants to suit up and play…somewhere.

  57. At Adrian’s 30th birthday party he rented a camel and dress himself up like Aladdin.

I feel bad for Zimmer, there probably isn’t a harder working coach in the NFL and all he wants to do is build a winner, yet he gets saddled with a marquee RB who not only has legal and league issues, but now has an attitude along with one of the most annoying agents in sports.

With only one trading partner the reason a trade hasn’t happened is no doubt the offer has been well below asking price. Nobody is going pony (or camel) up close to $10million / year and give up high draft pick(s) for a 30 year old RB, I don’t care if he is Walter Payton. Too much baggage, too much money, too old, and that annoying agent.

  58. I believe Peterson would come back to the Vikings if the Governor would issue a formal apology, on behalf of himself and all the cyber bullies in Minnesota, admitting that AD was not convicted of child abuse. Before his day in court, Dayton slandered Peterson from both sides of his mouth: “Mr. Peterson is entitled to due process and should be innocent until proven guilty…..However, he is a public figure; and his actions, as described, are a public embarrassment to the state……I believe the team should suspend Mr. Peterson, until the accusations of child abuse have been resolved by the criminal justice system.” At the time, Peterson was charged with felony injury to a child. But he was convicted of misdemeanor reckless assault. He made a careless mistake while disciplining his child. This is not child abuse. Yet Dayton has said nothing. Dayton needs to explain to Minnesotans that Peterson was not convicted of child abuse, because many Minnesota cyber bullies are still claiming he was.

  59. If I were the Atlanta Falcons, I’d be licking my chops at the chance to acquire “All Day”

  60. after all of this all we hear is what AP lost in sponsor’s and how this is because of what the team did. I believe that the team lost a ton also start with Radisson and the list goes on the team had to deal with him.

  61. AP is a silly man. I mean take a huge pay cut then and play with a less promising team. Does AP seriously think his SB chances are better in AZ. PROVE IT then and take them to a SB.
