Zach Mettenberger organizes workouts with Titans receivers

There’s plenty of speculation about possible moves the Titans may make at quarterback in the coming weeks, much of it centered on drafting Marcus Mariota or making a trade for Chargers veteran Philip Rivers.

Right now, though, Zach Mettenberger is at the top of the depth chart and he’s acting like the starting quarterback by organizing workouts with the team’s skill position players ahead of next week’s start of the official offseason program. Running back Dexter McCluster thinks it speaks well of Mettenberger that he’s taken that initiative and wide receiver Kendall Wright said it shows Mettenberger is “stepping up” into the opportunity.

“I do think Zach is more than capable, and he is ready for the challenge. There’s some stuff to him, a different kind of swag that he has. He has some stuff to him that I love about him. And I respect him a lot,” Wright said, via the Tennessean. “Right now Zach is the guy, and that is who I am rolling with until further notice. He is the quarterback until Ken Whisenhunt says otherwise.”

The Titans have been looking at several options among first-round prospects of late, leaving themselves plenty of options if they stay put with the second pick or make a move somewhere down the board. The fact that Mettenberger is setting up workouts probably isn’t going to sway their decision all by itself, but it could add to the starter qualities he’s shown and lead the team to stick with him in 2015.
