Washington’s selection of Iowa offensive lineman Brandon Scherff with the No. 5 overall pick might have caught some draftniks off-guard.

Well, Scherff was in the same boat.

“I haven’t talked to them since the Combine, so I was pretty surprised,” Scherff said Thursday night in Chicago. “But I’m stoked and happy, and I’m ready to go.”

Scherff was regarded as one of the top linemen in the draft. He will play right tackle in Washington, head coach Jay Gruden said Thursday night, according to ESPN.com’s John Keim.

Asked how he might be able to help Washington’s offensive line, Scherff said: “I like to consider myself to be a nasty football player. I want to jump in and earn the respect from all the teammates first and learn the plays and just go out and prove it to all the guys.”
