Report: Steelers were “ready to draft” Maxx Williams before Ravens traded up

Getty Images

Steelers tight end Heath Miller turns 33 in October and the team reportedly had their eyes on a player to complement him now and potentially replace him down the road.

Problem was, their AFC North rivals from Baltimore had designs on the same player and traded up to get him. The Ravens dealt a fifth-round pick to Arizona to jump up three spots in the second round to take Minnesota tight end Maxx Williams with the 55th pick.

That was one pick ahead of Pittsburgh and Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the team was “ready to draft” Williams with the 56th pick. They wound up taking cornerback Senquez Golson with Williams off the board, addressing a need at cornerback but apparently just missing out on a player who could torment them multiple times a year if he pans out in Baltimore.

The Steelers have five more picks at their disposal on Saturday and we’ll find out if any other tight ends caught their eye over the last few months.

I’m very surprised the Steelers didn’t move up to secure their guy, and then I’m not. Baltimore got a really solid player, and a steal at that pick.

Wouldn’t have it any other way.

Great anticipation by OSmith. As usual, Colbert sits on his hands while the 2 Collins, Rowe and Williams come off the board. Then he compounds it by overdrafting a 5’8″ slot/nickel CB at least a rnd too high. But he’s the ‘best in the business’, right men? LOL. Even though Dupree slid in many people’s eyes, he has huge bust potential too. SCoates can’t catch. Colbert needed to hit on this draft and so far it’s a total whiff.

Forced Pittsburgh to take a CB. It did them a favor.

In the 2010 draft the Patriots gave the Oakland Raiders a 6th round pick to move up from 44 to 42 in the 2nd round. They then used pick 42 to draft Rob Gronkowski. Having missed out on Gronk, the Ravens then used pick 43 on Sergio Kindle.

Ravens spoil the steelers plans once again. Steal a TE and make the squealers take a 5’8 nickel back in the 2nd. Don’t worry though he plays like he is 5’9!

No disrespect to Maxx Williams, but , the Steelers have a number one offence, it’s good to see some defensive players . . .
I am very used to top five defenses, and can’t wait to get back to normal 😉

Just another example (of many) where the Ravens outclass the Steelers.

  12. citizenstrange says: May 2, 2015 12:11 PM

Can you imagine if they took a TE in the 2nd round and then a WR in the 3rd? Maybe then Big Ben could crack the magical, mythical, 15 point barrier in a home playoff game.

Who am I kidding? The Steelers won’t make the playoffs. Last year’s cream puff schedule was an aberration.

Nearly every GM/coach who is in the league and those who aren’t say it typically takes 3 years to see how a draft turns out.

Yet you have the uncanny ability to tell in 1 day. How have you not been hired by a team yet?

  15. pitt4059 says: May 2, 2015 12:22 PM

The Steelers are gonna draft PSU’s Jesse James today. 6′ 7″ and fast. A cross between a WR and TE.

  16. loyalraven says: May 2, 2015 12:24 PM

Ironically, in the 2010 draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted now retired Jason Worilds with the 56th pick. Asked why he decided to retire, Worilds promptly answered, “the extreme embarrassment of having to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tim Tebow crushed our souls. Ever since they took our steroids away we cant win man. We cant win!! I’d rather retire and give up millions of dollars than play for that dumpster fire. It’s embarrassing.”

  17. Eutaw's Finest says: May 2, 2015 12:25 PM

Yea I pretty much threw this out there yesterday right after the pick when steelers fans trolled in unison that they wouldn’t have picked him anyway and the ravens wasted a 5th on nothing. Clearly trolling and accuracy do not fall in the same category.

  18. kremis says: May 2, 2015 12:25 PM

Boy Maxx is counting his lucky stars. Doesn’t have to live under the Tebow curse as a Steeler so he will get to experience playoff wins and potentially another Super Bowl or two.

  19. enoughofthatalready says: May 2, 2015 12:31 PM

Ravens did not spoil anything and they beat them at nothing here. What a joke. This did the Steelers a big big favor. Golson is a perfect fit for the Steelers and is being called one of the best fits in the first 2 rounds so far. What he lacks in size is made up for in his toughness and ability which is what the Steelers D lacks right now. And who says that Colbert whiffed on the draft? Dupree and Golson fill in big needs and Coates could give them the best young WR core in the league.

Ha. Before this past year the Ravens never beat the Steelers when it counted as they were 0-4 against the Steelers in the playoffs including 0-1 when they were the Browns 1.0.

Makes you wonder how Ozzie knew that the Steelers “were ready to draft Williams”. And why is that not considered tampering? Hmmm. Golson may have been overdrafted but he fits what the Steelers are looking for. Tough guy with amazing ball skills for a team that could not buy an INT early in the year. Dupree would have been taken earlier if not for the RB/CB spree in the earlier picks. Again Dupree fits the Steelers system perfectly as a guy that can play in multiple sets. Coates has better quickness and recognition than some of the guys ahead of him and his catching ability or lack thereof can be worked on. Total whiff? How the heck would you know before these guys step into training camp?

They cannot afford to give away picks to move up. They need young bodies in certain positions and they are getting that. Hopefully today will result in a S, OLB, CB, RB, TE and OT or DT.

Steeler Nation was very much aware that the Steelers would have probably taken Williams as he is the best TE in the draft but it did them a favor by the Ravens taking him. They still have Heath Miller and they drafted a guy last year that they can use until they draft Miller’s heir next year. Ravens have had no luck at TE in the last 2 years and were deperate to get this guy and they did. Case closed.

Cream puff schedule? Ravens had nearly the identical cream puff schedule and they finished behind the Steelers. Plus the Steelers lost to the Bucs, Jets and Saints. Could have been 14-2. And anyone that knows anything about football knows that the loss of Bell really dismantled the Steelers offense and that along with the Ravens’ perfect defensive playcalling is what caused 15 points by the Steelers. You may recall the previous thrashing.

This is why the Ravens are 6-3 against the Steelers in the last 4 years. We have a better front office, period. Picking their pocket for a TE that will be a star , when both teams badly needed one, is a classic example. One has to wonder if Bruce Arians had anything to say about to whom to trade the 22nd pick. Steelers were 2nd in AFC North in 2013 and the Ravens were 3rd. Steelers were 1st in the AFC North in 2014 and Ravens were again 3rd. Translation = they finished BEHIND the Steelers in 2 straight years. Got it now?

If we held that against every team that did that to us, we’d be a pretty bitter group of fans by now… We got a good corner, which is more use to us than a tight end. We also got Jesse James later in the draft. Trust me Ravens fans, we’re not at all upset. By the way, the Tebow thing is way tired. We’re over Tebow now and looking forward to a bright future now.

  66. concretejimmy52 says: May 3, 2015 6:16 PM

Steelers are still rebuilding. Ravens reloaded. They’re WR corps and DL improved even with the loss of Ngata and Torrey Smith.

  67. steelercrazy says: May 3, 2015 10:51 PM

Ravens out drafted them by reaching for a receiver with their top pick? Ha, hardly! Wait until Dupree plants Flacco into the turf. Ravens didn’t out draft anyone. Newsome panicked by trading up for a TE who can’t block, Steelers were going CB anyway and had no interest, grabbed a better TE fit for their scheme with Jesse James. Harbough, Newsome got played by Colbert and wasted a draft pick by trading up.

And no replacement for Ngata, Ravens in decline!

  68. bbbbwindows says: May 3, 2015 11:35 PM

The front seven for the Ravens is probably the deepest and most talented in the NFL. Adding Carl Davis is just insult to injury.
The PPG on Sunday reported Colbert as saying they were drafting a corner no matter what in the 2nd round. He said they were trying to trade up to get Golson and would have passed on Williams even if he were available.
That’s either an obvious lie or the Steeler front office is worse than anyone thought.
Golson was projected as a 3rd and even 4th round pick by many. At 5’8″ he might not even make it in the NFL. I wonder what took the Steelers 7 minutes to overdraft a projected 3/4th round pick in the second round?
They got their pocket picked (as originally reported in the PPG on Saturday) by their division rival. Of course we have to give the assist to Bruce Arians! Payback is a @#$&%!!!
This comes on the heels of last year’s draft when they passed over probowl linebacker C.J.Mosely and let him fall into the Ravens lap. Colbert is really having a bad run. It’s becoming obvious they just are poor judges of talent.
The results of a superior front office were most visible in last year’s playoffs, when the Ravens SPANKED the Steelers. I guess after a 3 year absence the Steelers were just happy to make the playoffs.

It’s pretty obvious that Colbert is lying about at least one thing for sure…..his BPA mantra must be untrue if they were taking Golson over Maxx Williams. Williams was projected as a 1st or early second round pick and a surefire starter in the NFL with outstanding NFL pedigree. Golson was a projected 3rd round pick that may or may not make it in the NFL because he is so little (5’8″). Well apparently he can play baseball if he doesn’t make it in the NFL. Maybe the Steelers can make a deal with Clint Hurdle????

I get it. You like your guy. Soon you will argue he is only 7″ shorter than Richard Sherman.

  71. ampatsisahypocrite says: May 4, 2015 2:03 AM

Can’t wait until Dupree blasts his 270 lbs. of freak speed into Flacco! At that point we’ll hear the end of the Maxx Williams garbage. And the biggest non-story of the draft will finally be over.

The myth of the Ravens “superior front office” was debunked when they paid a career 84 passing-rated QB 92-passer-rating money. In other words, simple mathematics called the Ravens a bunch of yahoos and morons. Enjoy your overpaid mediocre QB as he drags down the team towards the mediocrity his career stats show.

  73. MostcensoredposteronPFT says: May 4, 2015 2:20 AM

The Ravens front office is better than the steelers? No duh.

Way to draft a manlet CB pittsburgh, when will they learn…

  74. corvetteman6 says: May 4, 2015 7:23 AM

saw the guy play a number of times and aside from the highlight film run, where he lept over two different (and stupid) tacklers, all I can say is, Bah! He’ll be a typical Raven. Lots of hype. Lots of blather. Little in the way of impact, especially when a Steelers linebacker is smashing him on an errant crossing pattern from the most overrated QB in the NFL.

  75. getyourownname says: May 4, 2015 9:26 AM

All this brain-dead chirping aside, reality is these teams frequently seek to draft the same players, so there will always be jockeying for position. Each team wins some of these battles and loses some. I’m sure Ravens would have liked Dupree for example.

I do question whether this CB can survive the pounding of a whole season. Darrell Green – who most of these posters seem too young to know about – was a 5’9″ HOFer for Washington, but he was possibly the fastest NFL player of his era and also the League has gotten bigger and faster overall since then. But as always, we will see.

  76. TebowedOutOfThePostSeasonAndNeverToReturn says: May 4, 2015 9:59 AM

Sour grapes, Pittsburgh. Nothing but sour grapes. I suppose you’ll next be saying you weren’t trying to win the Wildcard game. I’ve never seen a fan base so full of lame excuses for every loss and blunder.

  77. corvetteman6 says: May 4, 2015 10:26 AM

Tebowed, they have prescription medicine available for your continual mental incontinence. Continually chirping about a wild card game of five years ago is like telling you to count Super Bowl trophies and then get back to us.

  78. guitarkevin says: May 4, 2015 10:33 AM

Reading all these comments was like witnessing children argue over who has to clean up the mess they made in the living room.
As a Ravens fan I am disgusted by the level at which my fan base stooped to talk smack to an obviously great organization and rival in the Steelers.
Of course Ozzie has to try and outsmart the Steelers, they are the only true threat in this division.

  79. inozwetrust says: May 4, 2015 10:58 AM

Oz once again proves he is the master. Steelers have a good draft also. Let’s see how it plays out on the field in the fall. Likely that both Ravens and Steelers start 0-1

  80. steelercrazy says: May 4, 2015 12:45 PM

Golsen is 5’9 not 5’8, has had success covering large receivers, is a ball hawk and fits perfectly into the Steelers zone scheme. And the improved pass rush with Dupree is the biggest factor that will improve the Steelers defense, takes the pressure off the secondary.

TE Williams is not a blocking TE and those TE’s don’t interest the Steelers. TE Jesse James is a better fit for thier scheme and can be groomed while Heith Miller plays out his last few seasons. So the Steelers would’ve passed on Williams, they needed to upgrade their secondary in the 2nd and were not going to wait around until the 3rd round to do it. So the Ravens basically traded up for no reason.

  81. theuglitruth says: May 4, 2015 12:58 PM

To be honest, I like TE Jesse James. I’m not a Steelers fan, but that kid has some great hands. If the Steelers use him right, he could be a game changer in the red zone.

Can you do some homework and provide Flacco’s playoff stats? For extra credit compare them to Big Ben. Flacco got paid cause the kid plays at a much higher level in the playoffs and won MVP in the superbowl his contract year. HE played his cards right and Ravens had to pay him or someone else would of. He will re work the deal to be more team friendly after this season and get more talent in to help win another SB, hopefully right?

  83. whitetrash69 says: May 4, 2015 1:49 PM

One is the number of pro bowl players Ozzie has drafted in the last 7 years, one is also the number of wide receivers he’s drafted that have produced 1k or more in yards in a season during his entire tenure in Baltimore. The guy is overrated….

  84. jacktheraven says: May 4, 2015 5:32 PM

@ ampats. Ozzie, John H. I, and many others laugh at you bringing up ” 84 passer rating”. when evaluating a QB. That means NOTHING to us. WINS are what keeps our jobs, and Joe has won MORE than any QB in his 1st 7 years.

  85. jacktheraven says: May 4, 2015 5:36 PM

I realize, it’s tough looking up at Joe, and The Ravens. When your team is 3-6 against them, since ’11. No playoff wins, in that time. Watching The Ravens win 6 playoff games, including a SB. It’s got to be tough.

  86. bbbbwindows says: May 4, 2015 6:14 PM

I guess Colbert is lying then when he said BPA is their philosophy. He changed his story on Sunday in the PPG, saying they were taking a corner in rnd 2 no matter what. This is what bad teams do…..leave a first round talent on the board and draft a 5’8” corner projected for the 4th or 5th round. Good decision. The skinny on Golson was ” allowed too many TDs last year, limited to slot corner in the NFL”. Williams was ” day one starter”.
Steelers draft grade of D is no surprise.
Ravens received a grade of A, “…..ravens got first round talent with their first 3 picks”.
Tears all around in Steel City.

Too bad he’ll be overthrown regularly and set up to get crushed over the middle week after week.

  89. bbbbwindows says: May 4, 2015 10:18 PM

After giving the Steelers the Spankings of all Spankings in the playoffs last year, I find it almost cruel and unkind to torment them any further. But I just can’t help myself….LOL..LOL…LOL. So I won’t.
After this draft, I am prepared to step out with a pretty dramatic statement.
This is the best, the most talented, the deepest, the biggest and the fastest team the Ravens have ever put on the field.
There isn’t a weakness at a single position and they have quality depth at every position (except QB).
When the final cuts come, other teams will be looking to pick up starters. Especially the Steelers, who have little talent and absolutely no depth.
Our front office has put us in position to win our third Super Bowl. This would have happened last year if we hadn’t had 18 players go on IR.
Barring another barrage of injuries, the Ravens will win another Lombardi….and it won’t be close.

  90. steelercrazy says: May 4, 2015 11:39 PM

Ha! Problem is the 18 on IR were no better than their replacements.

Factor in aging edge rushers, no Ngada and a secondary that’s declined since Reed’s departure and you get a team in decline.

Flacco chocked in NE, so that meaningless win in Pittsburgh due to Bell being hurt actually cost the Ravens a chance to get Dupree, who will be terrorizing Flacco for years to come!

  91. bbbbwindows says: May 5, 2015 12:17 AM

Steelers love little cornerbacks….Golson 5’8″ and 175 soaking wet (LOL)…..gave up way too many Tds last year and because he is so little can only maybe play slot corner in the NFL. Great second round pick, and one projected to go in the 4th or 5th round, and one for which Colbert would have passed on first round talent Maxx Williams, projected to be a day one starter.
Bell…..he was a huge factor in the first 2 games vs. the ravens…..29 yards rushing and 58 yards rushing…..NO FACTOR. NO BODY could run on the Ravens. Front seven best in the NFL. Kind of like the Steelers….OR NOT.
The Ravens will be cutting players that could start for the Steelers.
When that tiny little secondary gets a look at the Ravens receivers: Williams 6’7, Waller 6’6″, Brown 6’5″ to go along with Smith Sr and Perriman well, they might just shrink up and die.
This is the raven’s year, so y’all just keep on rebuilding

  92. bbbbwindows says: May 5, 2015 12:28 AM

Check out the skinny on Dupree….”total project as a pass rusher, might not play much the first year.
Of course we took Za’Darius Smith (his teammate) in the 4th round because….”when watching films of Dupree, Smith was in every single frame. Smith is likened to Pernell McPhee 2.0.
Even with your watered down, weak linebackers Dupree will be there to learn from graybeard Harrison.Maybe he’ll start before he leaves the NFL for a career in religion.
When we take a linebacker 1st round he goes to the probowl first year and is runner up for DROY. Of course you guys could have taken him but …you just didn’t know.
Guess your just dumb about things like that

  93. steelercrazy says: May 5, 2015 12:01 PM

bbbbwindows, you couldn’t analyze pee wee football. The Ravens themselves tried to trade up to get Dupree but didn’t have enough to offer to move up so high in the first round. That’s why they panicked in the 2nd to grab Williams with the Steelers drafting ahead of them.

The fact that you keep saying Golson is 5’8 when he’s actually 5’9 shows that you have nothing of any substance that’s negative on him from a skills standpoint, so you have to exaggerate and misstate his height to make your point. 5’10 Antonio Brown torches your “big” defensive backs so your argument about height is not valid. I’ll take skills over height.

As for Bell, the Ravens targeted him in the second game and held back his rushing numbers, that’s why the Ravens weak secondary got torched. Look for more of the same this year.

  94. dontstabmeray says: May 5, 2015 1:28 PM

Why hasn’t Jump Ball Joe been to more than 1 Super Bowl? Strange because you people act like he is so great. Great QBs go to multiple Super Bowls.

  95. jacktheraven says: May 5, 2015 3:18 PM

Joe just turned 30. Relax, he’s got 7-9 years to go to multiple SBs. Geesh, he stunk till he was SBMVP. Now he still stinks because he’s only been to 1. Manning, Brees, Favre, etc. all only won 1

  96. bbbbwindows says: May 6, 2015 12:56 AM

steelercrazy….good name, crazy is the operative word.
I will look forward to much more of the same as last year, particularly the shellacking the Ravens put on the Steelers in the playoffs IN Pittsburgh! This was despite the Ravens having 18 players in IR last year, including 10 players from the secondary. That’s the only reason Ben had 1 good game last year against us. The other two he was on his back the whole game and even got knocked out in the playoff game. What a beat down. That has to be even more embarrassing than getting TEBOWED in your last playoff game 4 years ago.
As for Golson, what a horrible pick to make in the second round. He was a projected 4th round pick by most. The skinny on him was “….limited to slot corner in the NFL, allowed way too many touchdowns”. I hope he starts for you guys. Flacco will have a field day against him. That’s why it took the full seven minutes to select this pick. Y’all were still in shock after we stole Maxx Williams. The skinny on Williams was “day one starter”. The ravens got first round talent with their first 3 picks. The Steelers got 1st round talent with their 1st pick, 4th round talent with their 2nd and 3rd picks.
This is exactly why the Ravens are 6-3 against the Steelers in the last 4 years. The Ravens have 7 playoff wins during this time while the Steelers have 0 (zero). These numbers don’t lie. The teams aren’t even close anymore. The Steelers are in rebuilding mode, no defense and a new D coordinator. The Ravens are loaded and ready to make another deep playoff run.
Face it, the only thing you really have to look forward to in Pittsburgh is a new history book on the great (but now deteriorated) Steeler franchise.
The days of Ben and his miracles are but a memory. Time to get on the Pirates bandwagon, they actually have a good team that has a chance to win a playoff game this year.!!

  97. ampatsisahypocrite says: May 6, 2015 11:45 AM

“In difference to what was reported, Senquez was targeted to be picked in the second round.” “Without a doubt, we were going to come out of that round with a corner, and it was never a discussion. In fact, we tried to trade up to secure Senquez Golson, just to set the record straight.”
    –Kevin Colbert

Let’s put this nonsense to rest now.

  98. bbbbwindows says: May 6, 2015 1:48 PM

Yea, lets put it to rest. Better to lie (so obvious) and save face than be seen as incompetent. Especially after last year’s fiasco, leaving probowler and runner up DROY CJ Mosely on the board for the Ravens to immediately snap up(on the clock less than 1 minute). I wonder why it took 7 minutes for the Steelers to jump on their coveted Golson?? Maybe they were wondering why they were drafting a 5’8/175lb, 4th round corner in the 2nd round? Good point, so is everyone else.

  99. steelercrazy says: May 7, 2015 12:17 AM

1st round talent with the 1st three picks, thanks for the laugh!

A 1st round a receiver who can’t catch, 2nd round a TE who can’t block and may even sit behind Pitta, 3rd round a DT who has issues rushing the passer.

TE’s who can’t block don’t interest the Steelers, so the Ravens wasted a pick trading up. Colbert played that brilliantly by releasing misinformation via a tweet by a local sports writer and Newsome took the bait.

The Steelers on the other hand got a beast of an edge rusher in the 1st, a ball hawk interception leader in the 2nd, and a solid depth pick for their receiving corps in the 3rd. Add to that another ball hawk CB in the 4th. Both CB’s fit nicely in the Steelers zone scheme and have solid skills to make up for height. End result, the defense is upgraded.

So things are looking up for Steeler nation. Ravens on the other hand continue to struggle replacing former key players like Ngata, Reed, Lewis, Bolden, Rice, too many whiffs like Arthur Brown, Cody, O’line and secondary safety replacements.
