Webster says Mariota will get “every opportunity” to start

AP

Last week on PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio, Buccaneers G.M. Jason Licht said that rookie quarterback Jameis Winston will be given “every opportunity” to start Week One against the Titans.  On Thursday’s PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio, Titans G.M. Ruston Webster said the same thing about his own rookie quarterback, Marcus Mariota.

And getting “every opportunity” to start means getting the first-team reps throughout the offseason and training camp.  While Webster didn’t make a blanket commitment to that approach, he acknowledged that’s the inclination, and he explained that a more definite decision will be made based on this weekend’s rookie minicamp.

For more from Webster (including whether he’s gotten any trade offers for Mariota since making him the No. 2 overall pick), click the thing in the thing below.

  1. It would be best to leave Mariota on the bench. If Mettenburger falters, then bring in Mariota. This is not a deep team and there is nothing to lose, so what’s the rush? This is not like that Giants team that had a solid core of players and Kerry Collins at QB and a 6-2 record but were itching to start Eli Manning, who went 1-7 the rest of the season.

  2. If you look at the Titans draft, they clearly drafted around Marioto (seven of their nine picks were offensive players). Starting him and seeing what he’s got is the right thing to do. I’m eager to see how well his game translates to the NFL. It may take a year or two, but I think Marioto’s doubters will be proven wrong.
