Dante Fowler out for season with torn ACL

AP

The third overall pick in this year’s NFL draft will miss his entire rookie season with an injury suffered at his first day of practice.

Jaguars pass rusher Dante Fowler is out for the season with a torn ACL, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Fowler, a talented edge rusher from Florida, was expected to make an instant impact on Jacksonville’s defense. Instead, at the first practice of today’s rookie minicamp he went down awkwardly, immediately grabbed his knee, and had to be helped off the field. It looked bad, and now it’s been confirmed that it was every bit as bad as it looked.

Just a week ago, Fowler was arriving in Jacksonville as a player who was supposed to make a big splash as a rookie. Now he’ll spend his rookie season rehabbing, and hoping he can be the player in 2016 that Jacksonville wanted him to be this year.

1. Sad…. The Jaguars are snake-bitten. I feel bad

Hoping for a speedy recovery.

-Broncos Fan

2. Such horrible news. As a Skins fan, people were willing to move up in the draft for this guy, and I wouldn’t have been sad to take him. Pure havoc wreaker off the line.

3. That is just awful, but if it’s going to happen, it’s better to happen early so he has as much time to rehab as possible before 2016. I just saw that Bleacher Report had the Jaguars as the #6 defense as of now, and a lot of it was based on Fowler’s presence.

4. Unreal….a week and a day after being drafted and he’s already out for the season. Talk about bad luck.

5. It’s tough being a Jags fan. It’s almost comical how many horrible things happen to this franchise every year.

6. Poor guy. I hope he makes a speedy recovery and is ready to go next season. I really feel for him and the Jaguars.

7. A year of being on the sideline…hopefully absorbing everything and hitting 2016 healthy and wise.

8. Obviously I feel bad for the young man but I feel bad for the Jags fans as well. They are trying to dig out of a mess and can’t catch a break.

9. Dang, this sucks. No one wins here. The player, the team, the fans, the game…always hate when players get injured. When it happens during one of their 1st practices of their career? wth…terrible fortune.

10. Wow, just like what Sean Lee went through last season. Good luck and have a speedy recovery. Bright side, Jags will be picking top 3 again in 2016.

11. At some point, the Jaguars have to catch a break (no pun intended) right?

However, the Jags weren’t adhering to the rules of no contact, so they’re reaping what they sewed.

12. wow, just wow. What a roller coaster of emotions going from being picked so high to the lowest of low knowing that you won’t be playing.
What a bummer for that guy and the team.

13. Unlucky young man. Hope you come back stronger.
Colin B. Patriots fan Scotland

14. You guys are forgetting that his contract is slated so this has no factor into the negotiations.

Tough though for the team and player

15. Can’t help but feel bad for the Jag’s and their fans. Seasons not over, Gus has them headed in the right direction.

16. Terrible news; especially with being a top 5 pick. Sorry Jag fans, nobody wants to see something like this especially within the first week of minicamp.

17. Colts fan here but there’s no way this should happen to anyone. Hoping the young man can rehab and be the player everyone thinks he will be – and then get pancaked by Anthony Costanzo.

18. Why would ANY rookie step on the field for any reason before that signing bonus check clears and his ATM receipt has six zeros on it?

19. Blaine Gabbert, Justin Blackmon, Dante Fowler Jr. Man….Jacksonville can’t catch a break with 1st round picks.

But maybe Blake Bortles and Luke Joeckel will work out

20. I can’t help but feel bad for the kid. Get well and wish him a speedy recovery.

21. Its “The Curse of Tebow”. Tim Tebow prayed a curse on the Jags because they wouldn’t let him play on their team. Make a trade with the Eagles and bring Timmy home and “heal” our franchise!!

22. Wow. Wonder how much the jags get fined for this. In think $250k for the team and the coach is suspended two games. If you watch the tape it’s more probably than not they were doing banned off season drills.
Roger must fully investigate this for the integrity of the game, to be responsible to the 31 other owners.

23. Sorry to see, but we are reminded once again how silly it is to grade recruiting classes days after the draft.

24. How can these fans of other teams send condolences to the Jaguars and sign it as their teams “nation”? You are just one opinion – maybe I like the same team as you but I don’t feel bad that he got hurt…..Or maybe I do. Either way, you don’t know, don’t group me into your “nation”.

Signed it’s not your nation

25. This shows how crazy the NFL is almost anything can happen. (Disclaimer: its still more probable than not that a certain team in the northeast is cheating.)

26. String of bad luck for the Jags, finishing in last place for so many seasons, acquiring below-par QBs in recent drafts (Gabbert and now Bortles), and now getting a top-notch player in Fowler only to get injured before training camp even starts a few months from now. Jags should have drafted Bryce Petty to turn their organization around.

27. There must be a curse on the top-rated pass rusher of the draft. First Clowney last year, now this.

28. Oh, Jaguar fans. I’m so sorry. That is absolutely brutal. Best wishes for a full recovery for Fowler from a Bears fan.

29. remember the scene with Kevin Spacey form Horrible Bosses
“you people are MORONNNSSS” thats the jags coaching and front office how they feeling right now lol

30. Poor guy. First practice of his rookie season. Its gotta be rough for that to happen to a top three pick. I bet he was excited to come in and have the chance to start right away. Man, i wish him a speedy recovery.

31. I was excited to see this kid play, hopefully he comes back stronger than ever.

-Lowly Bears Fan

32. Salaries are slotted and Fowler signed an injury waiver which states he will practice in exchange the team agrees to negotiate the contract in good faith, in case of injury. Jaguars will honor the slotted salary or the NFL will come under more brutal criticism, not to mention the Jags would create a divide between management and the players.

33. The only thing I know about him was how tough and great he claimed he was, completely lacking humility. Guess he wasn’t even the least bit tough after all. Can’t root for a guy who completely lacks humility.

34. Was he wearing the gold shoes at the time of the injury?

Speedy recovery. See you in 2016.

35. Sorry for the loss of your #1 pick Jags…..I know this hurts. I pray that Mr Fowler has a speedy recovery & returns to the field ready to get after it.

36. Sorry to hear. This guy has a bright future. Here’s wishing to a speedy recovery.
Vikes / Canes fan!

37. Chad Greenway tore his ACL in his first preseason game. Years from now, Jaguar fans won’t even remember Fowler missed his first year, and they’ll love having him and another first round pick next year.

38. We don’t get to say this to other team’s enough, but the entire Buccaneer Nation is sorry, Jacksonville, and we hope for Fowler to make a speedy recovery.

39. As a Niner fan, I have a good idea what the Jags fans are going through right now with a tough blow in the off-season. As a shlep behind a keyboard, I have no idea how hard this is on Mr. Fowler. Hang in there young man. Here is to a speedy and full recovery.

40. No true NFL fan wants this to happen. Keep your head up, Jags fans, modern medicine will get his ACL repaired and modern rehab techniques will have him back and stronger necxt year.

41. This is the kind of thing that normally happens to my Browns. Hope for a speedy recovery, he was going to be an exciting player to watch.

42. Terrible news for Fowler and Jags. I’d love to see Browns and Jags improve together and create a modern day boutique rivalry. I know this is wrong but if it happened at Dallas (or similar) I wouldn’t care

43. As a Raider fan, I really didn’t care one way or the other about the Jags or Fowler before today (no disrespect intended). But this is such an unfortunate incident for this young man and a team trying to find ways to win that I hope this kid comes back and has a hall of fame career for himself and the Jags fans.

Pretty poor when you have to try and make a point over another team’s accidental hardship. You don’t show much class with your statement. If the NFL believes something was being done illegally let them deal with it. How about coming in here and giving your thoughts and hopes for a speedy recovery?

45. Cowboys get three first-round picks, the Jaguars have none.

Luck is a fickle mistress.

46. Like most of you guys I’m not a Jags fan but this is still a sad story. I think we all like to see talented players on Sundays even when they don’t play for our team. Wish him a speedy recovery.

47. Jag Fan! Don’t be fooled by these hypocrites — the vast majority of these people, including me — don’t really care about you, your team, or Dante Fowler. When they say they feel just terrible about the kid, they mean the kid they just finished googling to make sure it wasn’t that other stud pass rusher their team almost drafted. When they say they were hoping to see him play this season, they didn’t mean against their teams. It’s easy to feel magnanimous now, or anytime frankly when it’s the Jags, when injury strikes an opponent. Just remember how obnoxious other teams’ fans were back when you were good.

48. Too early in the year for any injury let along this type.

Hoping for a quick recovery and speedy return to the field!

49. wow, feel bad, tough break for kid…. I think if Jags would have taken Cooper, we would have taken Fowler. Hope he comes back 110% good. Still think Jags had one of the best drafts out there.

As far as “Cowboy Nation” get real…..there is only one nation, all others are just wannabees.

50. I am a Cali Rams Girl 4 Life and I for one don’t ever want to see any player get hurt especially beginning rookies what a sad way to start. My prayers and blessings to this youngster for a speedy recovery. Hugs to The Jaguars and fans !!!

51. Khans mustache twitched when he heard the news. Seriously tho I think all nfl fans lose here. He was exciting to watch and will be again I am sure.

52. Let’s see, he played last time in November, (1 bowl game in January) draft is in may and Suddenly they play at 100% in mini camps?
Something here is not right.
Jags must be fined and draft must be in March

53. Thanks to the “thumbs up” button being so close to the “report comment” button, I just reported my own comment.

Again.

PLEASE FIX THIS, FLORIO!

54. Wow, that’s horrible news, definitely one of those franchises you just feel for, as a ravens fan I have some sick happiness cause they skipped Baltimore for Jacksonville of all places, two Super Bowls later I couldn’t be happier about it. wishes for a speedy recovery! Here’s that that backhand 😉

55. @dynamo1 We are not at all hypocrites we’re all human, and were showing we care regaurdless of what fan team we happen be from. You or anyone else can agree or not agree that’s up to you. I wish only the best for anyone and football is a dangerous sport. Have nice day!!! Rams 4 Life

56. I think they should have taken Cooper or White. Best offensive players in the draft. Or take Williams, best defensive player. The Jets got a gift. The Jags got robbed.

Bad things will now happen to you or your team, I would never wish this on any player or team. I believe if you’re the best team, you want to beat the best players on the other teams. It seems you’re a bit of a coward, wishing ill will on others.

You upvote your own comments? That’s weak.

59. Don’t forget in 2013 Jags 1st Round Selection OT Luke Joeckel broke his ankle in his 1st game starting at LT after starting about 4 games at RT.
It’s, “The Curse of Tebow”!

60. Is he even signed yet? I know that the positions are slotted, but could this timing affect his rookie contract?
What a horrible break for the young man and the organization both.

61. I really feel bad for Fowler and all the Jaguars fans. Hopefully it balances out and Bortles has a ProBowl season and leads you to the playoffs.

Seahawks fan

62. As previously mentioned, 2006 1st round pick for the Vikings Chad Greenway tore his ACL in the first pre-season game, he will be wrapping up a decade with the club this season and will go down as one of the greatest defenders in team history, and will undoubtably have his number retired.

I say this because people always forget it happened in retrospect or unless it is brought up. It sucked at the time, but in the end? It mattered very little, he is currently the longest tenured member of the team and will go down as a legend and a monster of a draft pick.

Keep your heads up Jags fans! I like what you guys are building down there, I don’t need to tell you it will take patience but, if history is any indicator this is just a MINOR speed bump.

63. First and foremost i feel horrible for Fowler and the Jags.

My main point is its so idiotic to have a minicamp a week after the draft. Great job NFL ruining a season for a player & team and having players out for the year on the first meaningless practice.

Its ironic how much better the quality of play used to be on about 60 less practices. The first practice should be training camp a month before the season starts. To practice this early is idiotic.

Can the NFL do anything right? No.

64. I feel no remorse for the Jags. As a Ravens fan we lost Pitta for a second straight year last year along with 5 DB’s! I do feel for the player though, rough way to start your career.

65. Great guy and we all wish him a speedy recovery. The Jaguars are a hard luck football team. Bummer.

66. Man…the Jags can’t catch a break. I hope he recovers and comes back even better. Sorry Jags’ fans, seriously.

-Eagles fan.

67. Bravo, to all the variety of different teams’ fans out there “flooding this board” with their well-wishes!! Beautiful!! Despite the really lame, highly cunical comments I read from some Cowboy, Steeler and Raven fans, there is an amazing amount of good-karma here!
Very tough break for the Jaguars, their fans. I also wish him a perfect recovery and hope he uses the down time his rookie year to prepare for an excellent 2016-17. (Hey Dallas, Pitts and Baltimore NO TEAM DESERVES THIS. Not even the Cowboys, Stillers or uhm, Ravens. I think.)

68. …..could this be the catalyst for the NFL to move the draft to March…than demand NOTHING but conditioning drills for 2 months before 11 on 11?……you cant just throw these rookies into playing combat after being off for 4 months.

69. Even with me being an ardent Gator hater, I hate to see this happen to any player, especially a guy just getting started in his career. It’s just a shame, but hopefully like Clowny from last year, he bounces back and can get back to top speed next year.

70. Pick sucked out loud. High round Florida player with the same skill set as 1000 other guys. Situational player, not a 4 down player, spend big money on him???? Cmon, bad pick we could have used Williams or cooper, but now the guy I wanted least is on the shelf. Lame v

71. I don’t get it…dudes blowing out ACL’s in a non contact deal….like Derrick Rose driving the lane & collapses……just a theory but these dudes are so fit & tight that it just snaps…..Anyway I feel bad for Fowler & the Jags………

72. There is something wrong with the nfl and imo it is the artificial feilds. waaaay too many knee injuries…I hope his salary is injury guaranteed.

73. Well, look on the bright side, there will be another seat filled in the stadium on game days, and who knows, if he brings a few friends, maybe they could put a real dent in all those empty seats…

74. Trash talking about hating your team or the back and forth bickering between us fans comes to a halt when this happen,,,you never want to see this happen to a anybody,,, GET WELL SOON YOUNG WARRIOR

#STEELERNATION

75. Been a jag fan for 29 years and and this might hurt the most. So excited for the season and to watch him play.
It’s really cool to read all the well wishes from other fans though.
If the black cloud ever leaves watch out for the Jags!

76. As a Texans fan, I always root against the teams in our division. But wow man, this sucks for all of us football fans.

Dude the Jags have only been a NFL Franchise for 20 years. Since 95. But thanks for being there the previous 9 years cheering us on.lol, I realize it was prob a typo but just had to razz you.

79. I hope that he recovers quickly and is back up to 100% real soon. This really sux. I hope nothing but the best for him.

Now…

Why does there have to be trolls on here?? Calling him a bust, etc., etc., etc.. Absolutely no class, as if they care.

Good luck to him and the Jags. Will be wishing you both the best this year.

– Vikings fan

80. Wow, I feel really sorry for the dude. That is all kinds of snake bit.

Still, there is a part of me that is thankful that my Redskins never got the opportunity to draft him.
