Broncos third-round pick Jeff Heuerman suffers torn ACL

AP

Broncos rookie tight end Jeff Heuerman will miss the entire season after tearing his ACL at practice today.

Heuerman, a third-round draft pick, was injured while running down the field on a special teams drill at rookie minicamp. He was carted off the field and diagnosed with a torn ACL.

I feel terrible for Jeff and this is a very unfortunate situation,” Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said. “Jeff was going to be a big part of our team this year, and he’s still going to be a big part of our team and organization in the future. He’ll get well and be with us as part of this team throughout his rehabilitation.”

The Broncos were hoping Heuerman could make an immediate impact on an offense that lost top tight end Julius Thomas to free agency. Instead, Heuerman will spend his rookie season rehabbing.

  13. Ferdinand says: May 9, 2015 9:13 PM

There were quite a few last year, too as I recall.

Feel bad for Heuerman, but this doesn’t hurt the Broncos anywhere near as badly as the Jaguars losing their first round guy.

How will the haters blame the Patriots for this???

This sucks. I like to beat the Broncos, but not because their guys go down with injuries. I wish him the best in his recovery.

Unfortunately for Heuerman he’s struggled with injuries throughout his career, and this particular injury will probably label him as “injury prone”

Can only think of one thing causing so many knees to break down like this, steroid abuse giving him too big of muscles that their bodies can’t naturally handle.

It’s obvious drug abuse is a consistent nature in the NFL.

@carl gray I’m used to seeing dumb comments but yours may top them all. Have no clue what you mean about karma towards the broncos and how it relates to the niners. I especially have no idea how you expect to go 14-2, get home field advantage, and win the SB this year in that division. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but I don’t see it as realistic to even think niners will be wild card team in that division after losing all the players they lost plus letting Harbaugh walk. But cheers to you and your passion. I guess

  32. steincj36 says: May 9, 2015 10:11 PM

Or maybe its a rookie who just got there and is trying to make a positive impression on his Coaches, Teammates and fans by showing that he was worth the 3rd round pick spent on him. Rest and recover well young man. It was just a combonation of dumb luck and youth pushing himself too hard. Rehab and go on to have a stellar career! This from a Charger fan.

OK, maybe it’s time (or over due) that conditioning and training be examined and evaluated in all the college programs that want their players drafted into the NFL.

Or, NFL teams need to start looking and vetting the training and conditioning programs these kids are coming out of in their colleges before they draft any of these kids. I’m Sorry But MULTIPLE season ending injuries don’t occur like this unless a player is not a.) Taking care of themselves and b.) Training right. (Training and conditioning themselves like they want to be in the NFL.) And they SHOULD be learning how to do this properly and productively from their college programs.

  37. steelerdeathstar says: May 9, 2015 10:28 PM

Injuries like this can happen at any time, of course…but do they really need to be running drills in early May? Especially when these guys might not be at the peak of their conditioning?

  41. ajigel says: May 9, 2015 10:33 PM

ACL surgery is becoming like tommy john in baseball. It’s needed way to much. I know concussions are a priority, and I get this, but knee injuries seem to be right up there. Not sure how to prevent them other than through proper training, though

  42. lostsok says: May 9, 2015 10:36 PM

Ouch. When this kid was drafted my first thought was: perfect fit. 50-60 catches for all but any other team…potential 80 catch guy in Denver.

I hate the Broncos…but this just breaks my heart. Hate to see these kids hurt right out of the gate. Bad for the game on every level. But…football is hard.

    Good luck coming back, kid.

  45. sb8ramsfan says: May 9, 2015 11:01 PM

Is it just me, or are there more ACL injuries now than there used to be?!? SMH! Hoping and praying for speedy recoveries for both of those young men! It hurts my heart every time it happens to one of them.

  46. justintuckrule says: May 9, 2015 11:02 PM

  47. quinzze says: May 9, 2015 11:16 PM

The NFL should allow players with injures to use HGH, isn’t that what it was invented for? Thay all take it anyway and if you think most of them don’t your fooling your selfs. I want to see the best players play and if HGH gets them on the feild faster than good shoot his knee up with it and get him back out there.

  51. purpleguy says: May 9, 2015 11:37 PM

I have a hard time believing he tore his ACL just running down the field on a drill. Seems like many of these mini-camp injuries result from a little more contact on drills than is permitted under the CBA.

  52. jh82208 says: May 9, 2015 11:39 PM

Good ACL’s are wasted on 32 year old non professional athletes like me. Such a shame. Get well soon.

  53. ymca2014 says: May 9, 2015 11:45 PM

These ACLs are breaking like crab meat. Players are in such great condition, they can broad jump right out of the combine. But the ligaments are still the same, and not built to withstand these freakish movements.

  54. snowdood163 says: May 9, 2015 11:57 PM

As a broncos fan, I’ve gotten used to reluctantly checking the comments section as usually about 80% of them are negative comments toward manning. I must say though, it’s very refreshing to see only 1 idiot loud mouth pats fan looking to talk isht. Not counting the delusional 9er fan. Way to be classy, pft commenters. Kudos.

  55. denverdave3 says: May 10, 2015 12:00 AM

Another b;own Elway draft. First round is injured and has to be a backup, second round tackle is a reach, probably won’t be any good in year one. No third round is out. Elway is not good in early rounds. A few guys have been fair, but he hasn’t had any pleasant surprises.

In fairness, he’s done well in later rounds and Free agency both rookies and vets,

But first three rounds are a disaster every year. only a couple have made the pro bowl. POOR.

I’m not suggesting the field had anything to do with this, I have no idea. But I’m wondering aloud how intensively the NFL has studied field conditions and types to determine if there’s a way to reduce the risk of these kinds of injuries.

It’s just weird to me that alot of these kids go through college at full speed in actual games and don’t tear an acl, and then in non/low contact nfl practice they tear. Maybe it’s all the pre-draft prep they do, I don’t know.

To those curious posters that asked about ACL/Injuries in the previous decades… yes, of course the injuries were there and in fact the numbers are about the same! Artificial Turf causing/being blamed for some of them is balanced out by better real turf management. Old grass fields use to hurt many with ankle injuries and knees too. It is a fact of life and the human body has not changed that much in the last thousand years. Sorry God, but poor Engineering on this one.

The only difference is the vast amount of social media and reporting that is at our fingertips. Nonetheless, sorry to the Broncos Fans and Heuerman. This just plain sucks.

  79. motsuret06 says: May 10, 2015 11:44 AM

This is complete and total bravo sierra and should not happen at all. This along with the injury to Dante Fowler of the Jags should show the folly of these rookie mini camps. Is it worth all of these knee injuries to run up and down the field for special teams drills with no contact nor pads. These injuries are the fault of over zealous coaching staffs in the NFL and a handle needs to be gotten on them. All of this soft soap and sympathy is uncalled for. This one is on Kubiak and the poor player has to be cut on and rehabbed for a year or longer just to get another try at a pro dream. This is not training camp nor the regular season. No reason for it.

  80. rc33 says: May 11, 2015 1:59 PM

    Tough break.
Feel bad for the kid…and Dante Fowler too.
What really sucks is that TE Fred Davis just signed elsewhere. He looked the the best “still available” option.
