Patriots releasing CB Kyle Arrington

AP

The Patriots are parting ways with one of their defensive regulars of recent seasons.

New England will release cornerback Kyle Arrington, ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss reported Monday morning. Other media outlets have also reported Arrington’s departure.

The 28-year-old Arrington started 4-of-14 games for the Patriots in 2014, notching 39 tackles, four passes defensed and one sack. He played 25-of-53 defensive snaps in Super Bowl XLIX, getting the start as the fifth defensive back. He also played 15-of-28 special teams snaps.

Arrington was set to make $3 million in salary in 2015 and $3.5 million in salary in 2016, per NFLPA records.

According to Reiss, it’s possible Arrington could return to New England, ostensibly at a lower salary. However, Arrington could also draw interest from other clubs, given his ability to help in multiple phases.

The release of Arrington continues an offseason of significant change in the New England secondary. New England lost cornerbacks Darrelle Revis (Jets) and Brandon Browner (Saints) in free agency and also waived corner Alfonzo Dennard. The moves leave holdovers Logan Ryan and Malcolm Butler and free-agent additions Bradley Fletcher (Eagles) and Chimdi Chekwa (Raiders) as among the primary options at cornerback.

Damn they got rid of the weakest link. Now we’ll have to go after Logan Ryan who is almost as bad.

I’m truly surprised by this. Arrington is a good slot CB. He’s not to great on the outside, but in the slot he can get the job done. I hope the Pats can bring him back.

Seems more and more evident that a philosophical change is taking place on the Pats’ defense.

  4. bassplucker says: May 11, 2015 10:44 AM

He’d be a good pickup for my Bears. They had a great draft, but CB is a position that has pretty much been lost in the sauce this entire offseason. I see problems ahead if they can’t put anyone better than Tim Jennings on the field opposite Fuller.

  5. patriotsdefense says: May 11, 2015 10:45 AM

He lead the league in INTs in 2011. He wasn’t so great in 2012 or 2013 but he had a pretty strong 2014 campaign, notably against T.Y. Hilton. It sucks that his last memory as a Patriot will be him getting burned up and down the field in the Super Bowl. He wasn’t as bad as his play suggested in that game. He is a stellar special teams player with great burst. I hope he finds a home and plays another handful of seasons.

He also could give tips to other teams on culture of cheating.

Mike has shown that It is more probable than not that Ted Wells tampered with witnesses. Why has Wells not turned over his personal phone and all his records related to this matter voluntarily? His law license should be suspended for at least 6 investigations.

surely they plan on trading for a few solid corners right? right?…this is getting worrying

  11. imodan says: May 11, 2015 10:55 AM

Bout 3 years too late. That guy got burned more than any CB I ever saw.

Just another example of how the Patriots cut corners to win Championships.

  15. alan226 says: May 11, 2015 11:12 AM

Good riddance . He gets torched all the time and was an embarrassment in the SB.

  16. fearthehoody says: May 11, 2015 11:15 AM

I hope Bill has some kinda ace up his sleeve. Arrington is an awful #1 or #2 CB, but is an excellent nickel CB. I have no idea what he is doing.

  17. harrisonhits2 says: May 11, 2015 11:16 AM

A bit puzzling but Belichick obviously has a plan for the defense. Guess it will be a crushing Dline and don’t give the other team much time to throw at our corners.

  18. andymannfl says: May 11, 2015 11:19 AM

Did he have to return his pressure gauges or do they just let him keep them?

  19. Ralphie says: May 11, 2015 11:20 AM

My most recent memory of KA was he got utterly torched by Chris Matthews (called up from the Seahawks practice squad) in the Super Bowl. BB pulled him. He had to. Once the Pats put Browner on Matthews they stopped the bleeding, KA getting benched also opened the door to Malcolm Butler to come in as the nickel and we all know how that turned out.

2015 Pats, 4-12, last place in the AFCE. Looks like they are making a play for Cardale Jones.

  21. tedmurph says: May 11, 2015 11:29 AM

Sure, dump Dennard and Arrington because they make too much. You’re all set at CB, right? I’m not sure they have a CB that could even be a 3/4 CB on any team. That includes MButler. Looks like a bridge yr, I guess.

  22. cantonbound13 says: May 11, 2015 11:33 AM

I wonder how many receivers they will end up cutting after they realize they can’t catch a fully inflated football.

People hate on him but he could start in NE this year. The cb in NE are just not good right now.

Another bust. This makes what Shannon Sharpe said look like he truth. Who else on this team is a HOF. There has to be some cheating going on, and for years!

  28. justwinbaby29 says: May 11, 2015 12:15 PM

Raiders have a ton of money for a situation like this. Go out and buy Arrington – a player still in his prime. Spend the cash, Reggie!

With all these corners gone, and Bradys suspension coming up..looks like the Steelers are going to be the favorites in week one.

  31. thefnang says: May 11, 2015 12:38 PM

Glad to see him go always getting burnt like he did twice in SB costing 14 points …

I am a huge Patriots fan but this was a great comment

  36. pastabelly says: May 11, 2015 2:42 PM

He was a decent slot corner. He covered TY Hilton well. Chris Matthews was just too big for him. Now we’ve lost Revis, Browner, Arrington, and Dennard. Who’s Next?

  37. edelmanfanclub says: May 11, 2015 3:26 PM

BB re-signed him thinking he can play both inside and outside and he’s not very good outside. I dont know why when its so evident he can only play insider, Bill continues to trust him outside and he would always get burned. Wherever he signs youll get a nice nickel man to man corner. It looks like we’re going to be playing alot of zone this year though.

  38. boomerst3 says: May 11, 2015 3:33 PM

Patriots did not lose Revis and Browner. They chose not to keep them. There is a big difference.

  39. higheriqthanyou says: May 11, 2015 4:17 PM

    How deflating.

Pats realize that with Belichick and Brady out for the year, they’re not going anywhere so they’re trying to save some money so Kraft can pay the huge fine.

    Make sense.
