While the Buccaneers landed ex-Texans safety D.J. Swearinger on waivers Tuesday, they weren’t the only club submitting a claim for the third-year pro.
The Jets attempted to claim Swearinger as well, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported.
The Jets’ new General Manager, Mike Maccagnan, was the Texans’ director of college scouting when Houston drafted Swearinger in Round Two in 2013.
Calvin Pryor, Marcus Gilchrist and Jaiquawn Jarrett are among the Jets’ primary safeties. The club did not draft a safety, and adding Swearinger would have added to the depth at the position, if nothing more.
The Buccaneers are ahead of the Jets on the waiver wire on account of having a worse record in 2014.
