Linebacker Mychal Kendricks has been the subject of trade rumors this offseason and said Tuesday that he doesn’t know whether he’ll still be a member of the team when the season starts in September.
Kendricks has been a starter for his three seasons in Philadelphia, but the team acquired Kiko Alonso in a trade with Buffalo and drafted Jordan Hicks in the third round to go with DeMeco Ryans in a crowded inside linebacker group. Kendricks said he thought there were ways to get him, Alonso and Ryans on the field at the same time, but also said that the team hasn’t had any talks about extending his contract (which expires after the season) and that he isn’t sweating the possibility that his NFL future lies elsewhere.
“I didn’t know what to think,’' Kendricks said, via NJ.com. “I didn’t know what it was. I guess it was what it was. In this league we’re all renting space. It’s a business. And you have to admire that and respect that. Hypothetically speaking, if I were to get traded the next team must want me. If you can play, you can play, and if you can play they will pay. There’s no hard feelings either way.”
Ryans isn’t back to speed yet after last year’s torn Achilles and the Eagles would probably like to see that happen before moving Kendricks ahead of this season, but if there’s one lesson from this offseason in Philadelphia it’s that no move should be totally ruled out.
