Cops find Brandon Spikes’ car abandoned after “hitting a deer”

Getty Images

It hasn’t taken Brandon Spikes long to make an impact upon his return to New England.

Or at least his car, anyway.

According to FOX 25 in Boston, a car registered to the Patriots linebacker was found abandoned on the highway early Sunday morning, around the time another car was hit on the highway.

According to the Massachusetts State Police, state troopers responded to an abandoned 2011 Maybach on I-495 in Foxborough. Police said an OnStar representative told them the driver of the car reported hitting a deer. While troopers did not find a deer in the vicinity (or a driver), there was a report of a 2009 Nissan Murano being hit from behind nearby.

The Maybach with front end damage but no visible antlers is registered to Spikes, who just re-signed with the Patriots.

No antlers? Really?? Sounds like a city boy writing this. Deer shed their antlers every winter after the rut and may just now start growing them back. Additionally doe have no antlers.

Also Deer have been known to run as far as a mile after getting hit by cars… they are a lot sturdier than people realize. Nothing suspicious about no antlers or no dead deer on the scene.

  53. bigbensbathroomseed says: Jun 7, 2015 7:10 PM

  54. yooperman says: Jun 7, 2015 7:12 PM

It is possible to hit a deer and not kill it. But it is impossible to hit a deer and not have deer hair on your car. Plus there will also be hair at the impact site. Any police officer can tell if the damage was caused by soft tissue or a hard object. Time will tell if he really hit a deer or something else.

  55. tskocpol says: Jun 7, 2015 7:12 PM

Too bad. Spikes was excited about returning to the Patriots and it looked as if he could play effectively, especially early in the season when other key players might not be back from injury.

But it will not take the cops long at all to figure out if the Spikes car hit the other one and who it was that was driving and called OnStar. If Spikes was drunk, hit the other car, and walked away, even lied about the deer, he would be in real trouble with the law and also in for a long NFL suspension. The Patriots will cut him at once.

Stupidity, if this is what happened, and it is lucky no one was seriously hurt or killed.

  59. hittfamily says: Jun 7, 2015 7:15 PM

  60. Ferdinand says: Jun 7, 2015 7:15 PM

Why are they looking for the whole deer? All you need is some fur or some blood. Or paint and scratches from the other car.

A deer that is only injured can sometimes go quite a distance before it falls. And traffic/accident recreation officers should have no trouble telling the difference between impact marks coming from something as inflexible as a vehicle and something as pliable as a living creature.

Besides, people who hit deer don’t generally flee the scene if that is all that is going on.

Stupid is as stupid does. And it looks like Spikes did stupid.

Not to worry, though. Massachusetts has always been lenient on people who crash their cars and then split the scene. Anyone remember Ted Kennedy? He got a two month jail sentence for leaving the scene of the accident in which his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne suffocated as she lay in his car under water, unable to free herself. The judge then suspended the sentence because of Kennedy’s outstanding character.
His wallet helped too, no doubt. The Kopechne family was taken care of with Kennedy money and no autopsy was ever performed on her.

So I’d say Spikes will come out of this just fine.

As a frequent traveler of that section of highway, there are lots of car/deer collisions occurring – usually worse in the fall. It’s not a pretty sight after a meeting between a deer and an 18 wheeler. Anyways, the State Police, who have a barracks in Foxboro, have lots of experience in these matters.

  87. aikman2284 says: Jun 7, 2015 8:47 PM

You can’t blame him for lying. The organization he works for embraces lying and cheating the facts. He is just following the lead. I hope the young man is telling the truth but rarely do we hear true facts from his associates and employer.

  88. dst62306 says: Jun 7, 2015 8:49 PM

All you on here bashing the Patriots think you know how thet operate but by the comments it’s pretty clear you don’t. I f Spikes was involved he will be out of a job by the end of the day tomorrow, just like Hernandez who was cut between the time they arrested him at his house and he arrived at the police station.

  92. physk says: Jun 7, 2015 8:58 PM

Police said there was a man in a white suit named Ray that was asking if they found any antlers

  93. numberoneinthehoodg says: Jun 7, 2015 8:59 PM

So this is how players get deer antler spray!

Myself, I’d use a cheaper car, but to each his own.

    @Mr. Craig

    Seasonally of course.

  94. pleasestopthesnow says: Jun 7, 2015 9:00 PM

First of all great pic of the deer above.

Second, im sure Urban Liar will be saying Spikes attended his Bible studies at a press conference tomorrow.

Typical patriot behavior. They should be thrown out of NFL- go play in Syria.

  100. qdog112 says: Jun 7, 2015 9:48 PM

The Pats are becoming the NFL’s Otis of the Andy Griffith Show. Goodell should just give them their own key to lock themselves up every night to save time.

‘It is possible to hit a deer and not kill it. But it is impossible to hit a deer and not have deer hair on your car. ‘

I’ve done it. My neighborhood is overrun with deer. One even ran into _my_ car while I was taking a turn. No hair was left.

I have no idea what happened here, nor does anybody else. Some details here would be useful. For starters, how far away from the rear-ended car was Spikes’ car found? “The same highway” could be 50 miles away.

It really shouldn’t be hard for an insurance adjuster to tell whether Spikes hit a deer or another car. They are two completely different kinds of accidents, and with the other car identified, it should be fairly easy to tell if Spikes is lying.

Oh, and haters? This has nothing to do with being on the Patriots.

  106. whispersd says: Jun 7, 2015 10:19 PM

Looking at the photo makes me think this wasn’t a deer. That’s a bit too much damage for a deer to walk away from.

  107. ninjapleazee says: Jun 7, 2015 10:34 PM

    Cadlow,

Alfonso Dennard was arrested twice for DUI.

    LOL, #DEERHITANDRUNGATE.
PAT FANS; It wasn’t him. You have no evidence. He would never do that. Everyone hits a deer and runs.
    I can hear it already.

Btw, drunk/drugged driving reason he ran.

  109. drewzducks says: Jun 7, 2015 10:40 PM

Lance Alworth just checked in to assure everyone that he’s home and resting comfortably.

  110. jvw1982 says: Jun 7, 2015 10:50 PM

He must have been really drunk to run into the back of car while driving on the highway……now lets see if he can find a sucker to say they were driving his car, hope that was a big contract he signed with NE he’s going to need it…time is running out…..

  111. johnnyb612 says: Jun 7, 2015 11:11 PM

    Probably drunk.

  112. orivar says: Jun 7, 2015 11:15 PM

He might of not been drunk, he could of just been buzzed. If anything it would of been more plausible if he went off into the woods, if the highway goes through a woody area (I live in Jersey so most of ours do) and lose myself because of “shock” and “head trauma”..just enough to sober up.

  113. kissbillsrings says: Jun 7, 2015 11:15 PM

  115. vincelombardisghost says: Jun 7, 2015 11:31 PM

Looking at the Maybach damage photo, no deer collision causes that much damage. His alibi will soon be, forgive me, deflated. He’s in a heap o’ trouble. Another bald faced lying NFL player. The cops must be licking cop chops on this one.

Dough – The stuff that buys me beer
Ray – The guy who sells me beer
Me – The one who drinks the beer
Fa – A long way to my beer
    So – I think I’ll have a beer
La – la la la la la beer
Tea – No thanks, I’m drinking beer
That will leave me with no Dough

NFL Refs: we have off-setting personal fouls. Personal foul on Brandon Spikes for running into the deer. Personal Foul on the deer for fleeing the scene of a car accident and inflicting damage to the vehicle.

    Penalties offset. First Down.

  129. pleasestopthesnow says: Jun 8, 2015 7:36 AM

Correction by the NFL refs after consulting with Blandino:

We have a correction on the last penalty: personal foul on Brandon Spikes for running into the deer and fleeing the scene of a car accident. Personal foul on the deer for damage to a moving vehicle and fleeing the scene.

Penalties offset. Spike and the deer are ejected. Replay 1st down.

  130. billh1947 says: Jun 8, 2015 7:37 AM

“Please just another bunch of lies I guess. Where were the remains of the poor deer???? What a load of rubbish.”

The truth is that when you hit a deer with your car the deer does not always die or even go down on impact,I have hit two deer at night and searched for them with my flashlight after stopping abruptly, nothing but some deer hair on by bumper so dont presume all hit deer die instantly, many run off to die in the woods of internal injuries.as for Spikes, the fact that he didnt stick around and wait for the cops does make him seem like he is hiding a DUI,smart,

  131. billh1947 says: Jun 8, 2015 7:41 AM

“It really shouldn’t be hard for an insurance adjuster to tell whether Spikes hit a deer or another car.”

Deer just do not leave scraped off paint on a car that collided with another though they do leave hair and crap on the car that they collide with.

  132. denverdude7 says: Jun 8, 2015 9:06 AM

Proper tire inflation could have prevented this accident…
