Brad Smith scheduled to visit Lions on Tuesday

The Lions are holding their final set of organized team activities this week and they may have designs on adding a veteran presence to their special teams units before this phase of the offseason comes to an end.

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports that the team is expected to visit with wide receiver Brad Smith. Smith has played a variety of roles during his nine-year NFL career, but was almost exclusively a special teamer with the Eagles over the last two years.

Smith saw 81 offensive snaps for Philly over 19 games and caught three passes, but was a regular on the team’s kick coverage units. That was the case in previous stops with the Bills and Jets as well, although those teams found more use for Smith on offense.

He has extensive kickoff return experience and four kickoff return touchdowns during his career, which could figure into the Lions’ plans although Smith wasn’t used in that role by the Eagles. If Smith does land with Detroit, he’ll probably vie with Jeremy Ross for a backup wideout/special teams job on the 53-man roster.
