Patriots release Brandon Spikes

Getty Images

Police in Massachusetts found an abandoned 2011 Maybach registered to linebacker Brandon Spikes on I-495 early Sunday morning, which has reportedly led them to reach out to Spikes to see why his car was left on the highway.

According to the car’s OnStar system, the driver reported hitting a deer before taking leave of his vehicle. No deer was found near the car, but another car reported being rear-ended on the same stretch of highway and the Massachusetts state police is trying to sort out exactly what happened.

The Patriots aren’t waiting for the mystery to unfold to make their call on Spikes’s future with the team. The team announced Monday morning that Spikes has been released.

That makes for a short second tour of duty with the Patriots for Spikes, who returned with the team recently after spending last season in Buffalo. He was going to be in the mix for work at linebacker, but the Patriots should be just fine at the position as long as Jerod Mayo and Dont’a Hightower are fully healthy in time for September.

Patriots picks out of Florida in the 2010 draft are as follows:
Aaron Hernandez: good but a murderer
Jermaine Cunningham: a bust who got busted for revenge porn
Brandon Spikes: great run stuffer but had a sex tape and now a hit and run all a season after talking crazy smack about the Pats
At least we got Devin McCourty and Gronk that year

  32. boblavoie says: Jun 8, 2015 10:31 AM

It doesn’t take a genius to put two and two together – did Spikes really think he was going to get away with this bogus story. Looking at a pic of his vehicle and the extent of damage, if he would have hit a dear, there would have been signs everywhere. Why did you leave the scene Brandon, too much to drink? Are you still searching for someone to take the fall? Too late, you’re unemployed. Now get some help while you’re in prison (hit and run). We don’t need you in New England.

  33. all4patriots says: Jun 8, 2015 10:33 AM

    Typical Patriot.
Liars, dopers, abusers, cheaters and rules “misinterpeters”.
I am sure Bobby Kraft rushed to pick up Spikes along the highway and is hiding him out until sober.
The owners of the 31 LEGIT teams should force the sale of the embarrassing Patriot franchise.

The fact you ALL neglect to see is that unlike other classless organizations (which you believe the Patriots are, but aren’t) they quickly cut ties and get rid of those who do wrong.

They do protect and back up those who are innocent.

Those who understand that will give a thumbs up.

Those who hate the Patriots and don’t understand logic will give a thumbs down.

A lot of posters here either do not understand why the Patriots really are an excellent and ethical organization, or willfully want to smear and dismiss the team.

ALL NFL teams deal with the fact that a significant minority fraction of players are troubled people who make dumb mistakes (drugs, drinking and driving) or do downright bad things (family violence, injuring and killing people). I am willing to bet all teams have had such players to deal with.

The difference is what they do about it. The Patriots have a good record of IMMEDIATELY cutting ties — for example, with Hernandez, now with Spikes — even if those players could help, if cleared (Spikes) or if the team would gain money by waiting to cut ties (that was true for Hernandez). But look at what other teams have done — such as the Ravens, whitewashing Rice and Lewis, or Dallas, which goes out to find and sign miscreants as bargains.

As one person explains, the Patriots are sticking by Brady because he and they believe he is innocent. Patriots do NOT accept that the deflategate railroading was deserved or done in a fair way. In contrast, the Patriots leadership DID take responsibility for the filming infraction in 2007, even though that matter was frankly overblown.

In the current deflategate matter, the League seems to be punishing the Patriots and Brady for not agreeing to take blame — hardly fair to do when the accused do not think they are guilty and have not had a real chance to make their case. The fact that the Patriots organization is at least above average in the NFL in avoiding and cutting real wrong-doers should, in an honest world, buy them credit.

Spikes was going to help the Patriots. But he got cut within a day of what almost certainly was a DWI hit and run, and the Patriots did not dawdle waiting for law enforcement or the video!

  58. david9261 says: Jun 8, 2015 10:52 AM

As a fan of the Patriots, i could care less that they released him. The most important thing is that the family of three in the other vehicle could have been seriously hurt or killed. Thankfully they are fine and you people who are taking shots at the Patriots should be ashamed of yourselves! The Bills signed him last year as well. Football is not life and death, but DUI and lying about it is.

  59. corvetteman6 says: Jun 8, 2015 10:52 AM

Every time one of these guys from Florida pop up in the news, it makes me respect Tim Tebow even more. The fact that he had to play and win with such trash around him? I applaud character that succeeds rather than guys like this, who no doubt will be joining his buddy Hernandez in lock up shortly.

Clever way to get out of a DUI ticket and a leaving the scene of an accident.

‘Officer, I saw a deer and swerved to avoid it. The next thing I know I hit it, or at least I thought I did.

My car looked a mess, so I just left it. I called a buddy to pick me up and planned to call a tow truck the next day.

I had no idea I had hit somebody. Seriously. I was swerving to avoid a deer and then I thought I hit it anyway.’

They’ll be fine at Linebacker…because the refs will call holding all day long against opposing teams anyway & the Offense will be cheating!

Why does Brady still have a job after being proved a cheater, costing the team a Million dollars, 2 draft picks & the rest of the little credibility they had remaining after the first time they were caught cheating? Probably because cheating is endorsed by the owner, coach & fan base!

  68. phinsup2068 says: Jun 8, 2015 11:00 AM

    Not really a loss.

Figured he was less than 50% to still be on the roster in September. Decent at best run stopper. Below average tackler. Can’t even cover his own shadow.

  70. catquick says: Jun 8, 2015 11:01 AM

  71. patsfanforlife says: Jun 8, 2015 11:01 AM

Trying to figure out from all the haters what the action of one individual on his own time and in his own car have to do with the organization being “corrupt”. Is your thinking that the Patriots organization told him that he should flee the scene? Or is that just your knee jerk reaction to anything possibly reflecting negatively on anybody and anything even remotely associated with the Patriots?

  73. ialwayswantedtobeabanker says: Jun 8, 2015 11:02 AM

We all know Spikes didn’t innocently hit a deer. It’s obvious.

Equally obvious is how Brady directed that his footballs be surreptitiously deflated behind closed doors for the purpose of circumventing a League rule on the matter. Brady refuses to share electronic evidence, his team denies access to “the Deflator” (McNally) for the key second interview and they’re also working a story that “the Deflator” is just an innocent fat guy trying to drop a few ell bees.

Both stories are equally implausible. However, Spikes is a two-down linebacker who can’t cover. Adios, Brandon.

Brady is the only QB to ever lead the Patriots to a Super Bowl Championship (four of them, in fact). Guess whose equally implausible bullcrap is defended to the death — and which player got crapped out faster than a plate of post-consumption Ex Lax brownies?

  74. goingthextramile says: Jun 8, 2015 11:02 AM

Here is what I “think” happened. Brandon Spikes “must have” lent his car to someone and they (Shayanna Jenkins?) didn’t want to get arrested for perhaps driving under the influence, so they ditched the car and fled the scene. Whoever it was that Brandon let drive his car needs to take the fall for this! #Patriot Way.

  75. patriotsdefense says: Jun 8, 2015 11:04 AM

If Brandon Spikes started his career in the 1980’s instead of 2010 he would have been a Hall of Fame linebacker. The game has changed away from everything he excels at. One of the best run stopping LB’s in the game doesn’t have a spot in today’s NFL.

The second they heard the Hernandez accusation they released him, other teams would have waited right till the end.

If more teams cut players ASAP rather than giving talented players a lot of chances i think players would behave far better as they know one mess and they’re out

Typical Patriot behavior right? Why not just typical NFL behavior? Sure New England had Hernandez.

But they didn’t have Hardy, Washington, Rice, McDonald, Lewis, Hurd, ….

I could go on forever. Let’s not act like the NFL cares about integrity. Alot of players are bad people.

  91. sbaltimore says: Jun 8, 2015 11:22 AM

It’s also more probable than not that 3 of his 4 tires were under inflated by at least .5 psi. The league is calling for an independent investigation, to be completed sometime before the start of the 2017 season, at a projected cost of around $50,000,000.00

This off season has proven what I’ve always known. There are a lot of bad guys in the NFL.

I can’t imagine what it must be like if you’re a decent guy who cares about his family and you play in the NFL. Because you know every locker room has guys who have a history of trouble with the law and are guys you wouldn’t trust if you met them in a dark alley.
Throw in you have guys who abuse alcohol or drugs and it must be tough if you’re that clean living, family man.
I always thought that Troy Aikman is an example of a guy who wasn’t thrilled with a lot of his teammates, even though they won multiple Super Bowls together. If you watch him talk about those teams and his teammates, he never gets too excited as you would expect him to be.
Fortunately, there are more good guys than bad guys in the NFL. It’s too bad they get all the press.

Give us a break regarding players are cut when they do something wrong. Many of those so called players had issues in college or on prior teams but the Pats signed them anyway.

  101. twpguy1964 says: Jun 8, 2015 11:31 AM

  103. carloswlassiter says: Jun 8, 2015 11:35 AM

The most shocking part of this story is that a 2nd or 3rd tier NFL linebacker with a likely career duration of perhaps 5-7 years at most decides that he needs to drive a Maybach.

  110. denverdude7 says: Jun 8, 2015 11:46 AM

Belichick was actually the one driving Spikes’ car and Brady was in the back seat with his girlfriend.

Spike’s was actually doing the right thing by having Belichick drive him home after having had a little too much to drink.

Brady was seen checking the tires for proper inflation after the accident. One was slightly over-inflated so he called the Deflator immediately for assistance.

WHAT ?!?!?!?!? You don’t believe this story?

Hey, it’s every bit as believable as a guy nicknamed “The Deflator” taking a bag full of footballs into a bathroom after inspection and NOT letting a little air out isn’t it?

  111. fordmandalay says: Jun 8, 2015 11:51 AM

So how much is a used, accident-damaged Maybach worth? I’m guessing Spikes is going to need to start selling off assets to live, and I’m also guessing he didn’t put much of his football earnings away.

Funny thing is that this dude has been on the team for about 30 days. Must have been the influence he picked up from his time in Buffalo.

I don’t have on star, but when I hit a deer with a Ford there was very little impact in the car. Is a 3000 pound car going at highway speeds hitting a 150 pound animal even enough to register as a impact accident? It makes a loud thud, but doesn’t stop or even slow the car.

You know, I’m beginning to sense that other teams’ fans are maybe a LITTLE BIT jealous of the Patriots going to the AFC Championship game every other year…

… and of course going to the Super Bowl 6 out of 14 years

I’m sensing THAT might have something to do with the jealous animosity as when the Falcons pipe in crowd noise or the Colts purposefully lose games to Suck for Luck – or the Jets coaches TRIP players running down the field, no one says much about the “integrity of the game” – including Jets fan Roger Goodell

  122. weepingjebus says: Jun 8, 2015 12:16 PM

Other teams find out via hard evidence that their player beat his child with a weapon to point of causing cuts and bleeding and they “punish” him with 1 year paid vacation and welcoming him back to the team with open arms.

Tell me more about how the Patriots are evil skum?

More like the model NFL team.

  159. dave399 says: Jun 8, 2015 1:40 PM

Being a Patriots hater must be such a helpless feeling.

They’re about to unveil their championship banner in less than 90 days. You all know Brady will be there one way or another. All punishment will likely be overturned by Goodell. If not, a judge will allow Brady’s suspension to be “suspended” pending a legal decision.

How will it look for the NFL if on opening night, the Super Bowl champions are celebrated on national TV, but the Super Bowl MVP is suspended due to allegations of cheating during the game that led up to the Super Bowl? The punishment will be overturned. You know it and I know it.

Then you’ll have to hear the phrase,, “The defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots” about 10,000 times over the course of the season.

So you can’t beat them on the field and you can’t beat them off the field. What a helpless feeling.

  160. gashmr says: Jun 8, 2015 1:48 PM

My team is better than your team because my team has betterer people. What a load. The current state of the NFL is one where every team front office picks up the newspaper while saying prayers. Teams are stuck with choosing between morality and winning.

Teams, and that includes my Seahawks, make a choice to pick a player who has great football skills and less than sterling life skills. They are rolling the dice on if the guy wilol produce enough for them to get to the next level before he implodes and gets arrested, suspended, busted on a drug test, or kicked out of the league for domestic violence or worse.

Every year we seem to have dozens of these incidents where playrs are screwing up their careers and the reputations of their teams by making stupid decisions.

Murder, rape, attempted rape, beating women, assault and battery, child abuse, gun charges, hit and run, DUI and drug busts. These are the examples of the new breed of NFL player.

I don’t know what the answer is. But it seems when you shove millions of dollars at young men they tend to get a false sense of their importance. These guys play a game. The problem is that the game generates billions of dollars and has millions of fans all saying their team is the bestest mostest cleanest and honorable organization because its felosn don’t match the level of the felons on your team.

The Pats are no better nor are they worse than any other team. I am not a Pats fan but they are just another sports organization that engages in the moral relativism of our time and culture. The Seahawks are the same.

If they win we cheer, and we hope that the good players stay out of trouble. If they lose we wish some other team’s good players could screw up just enough so that our team takes a chance on them.

Meanwhile players such as Russell Wilson are viewed as wierd? Tom Brady is detested as a cheat? Peyton Manning is reviled as a loser?

The Bills already told him he would have to try out and make the team in training camp. No way was he getting a huge raise to play part time. Likely his NFL career is over now. He didn’t exactly have a bidding war for his services.
Maybe Arena ball wants him, but I doubt it.

Pats fans mostly have no problem with Hernandez being convicted with circumstantial evidence. They are glorying in the release of Spikes on what is, so far, circumstantial evidence. But they get apoplectic about anyone suggesting St. Tom be judged by circumstantial evidence.”

    With Hernandez, there were bodies.

With Spikes, there was the scene of a crime.

With Brady, there were footballs deflated exactly how you would expect them to be given the elements.

    See the difference?

Yet another pats homer clinging to a 0.4 % chance of this happening naturally compered to the other teams balls.

You team with this current line up has about that chance to ever make it back to a SB w/o cheating.

  200. whispersd says: Jun 8, 2015 6:07 PM

“Patriots, a “Model Team”? Seriously? This from a team that repeatedly cheated because they were likely afraid they weren’t good enough to win without cheating.”

Like Troy Vincent, you have a weird idea of what “repeatedly” means.

In 2007, Belichick disagreed with the commissioner about what the videotaping rule was. So he ignored a league memo which, in his opinion, represented a false description of the rule. He shouldn’t have done that.

Seven and a half years later, a bunch of NFL executives, coordinating with the GM of the Colts, make a half-assed sting operation, with the intent of “proving” that the Patriots are cheating again. When they see a bunch of pressures at 11.5, a full psi lower than what they think they should be, they tell the Pats “you are in big f***ing trouble” and put the wheels in motion.
Some time in the next few days, somebody at the league office informs these execs that they’ve screwed up, big time. That in fact footballs lose pressure when they cool off, and that’s why the Pats lose 1 psi of pressure. So rather than admit that they made a mistake, these NFL execs double down on their mistake, apparently thinking that their position will let them get away with lying. (Hey, they’ve done so before!) So they leak a false story to Chris Mortensen saying that the footballs are 2 psi low, not 1 psi low. That’s a HUGE lie, since it puts the air pressures below what could possibly be explained by the laws of physics.

And then they hide the real pressures from the Pats for two months, while bringing in an inquisitor to try to nail the Pats. See, they figure that the Pats are really cheating, even if the evidence on this day doesn’t support that, so they are going to make sure they get a conviction. And hey, there’s a text message that uses the word “deflator”, which is surely a suspicious word for a person who works with footballs to use. (Right? – Wait, that argument doesn’t make sense, let’s move on.) We’ll pretend that “deflate” means the same thing as “cheat” and – tada!

  201. whispersd says: Jun 8, 2015 6:17 PM

“Yet another pats homer clinging to a 0.4 % chance of this happening naturally compered to the other teams balls.:”

Another math illiterate who only read the p-value from the Exponent report and didn’t look at all the assumptions that had to make to get that p-value. Did you notice they had to assume the following order of events:
    1) Pats balls gauged first
    2) Colts balls gauged second
    3) Pats balls re-inflated and gauged

But the reason for only testing four Colts’ balls was because they “ran out of time”.

If, instead of comparing apples and oranges, you use the gas law to see what the temperature of the balls was likely to be, you see that the Pats’ footballs come in at the low 50s and the Colts’ come in at the 60s. So, no, the Pats’ balls were not suspiciously _low_ (and even Exponent doesn’t make that claim) – the Colts balls were _high_ if they were tested right at the start of halftime.

But of course they weren’t. They were tested after the Pats’ balls were re-inflated. Also, they weren’t as wet as the Pats’s balls, because they were in a plastic bag while the Pats’ balls weren’t (not to mention they were being used a lot more in the first half).

Rather than allowing for the different conditions, Exponent explicitly made an assumption that the conditions were the same. Why did they have to “assume” information about the timing of a process when the actual facts should have been available? That seems suspicious in and of itself. Surely they could have just asked Walt Anderson “What did you mean when you said you ran out of time – was testing the Colts’ footballs the last thing you did at halftime?” I bet the _knew_ what the real answer was, but rather than use an out-and-out lie as the basis for their argument, they pretended that this was some kind of mystery, and then they made an assumption that favored the desired result of guilt. They did the same thing when it came to making a judgment about which gauge was used.

This is what you get when you pay big money to a consulting firm to print the argument you want to hear.

    _______________________________

Hernandez had a mountain of circumstantial and forensic evidence against him. He was cut because of his apparent involvement in murder. Spikes left the scene of an apparent hit and run. Once it became clear that Spikes was in the car you had enough to know the story. Spikes left the scene of an accident and for all he knew left people for dead.

The Wells report is full of holes and even acknowledges that they could not determine that intentional deflation even happened. And IF it was intentional the “crime” is manipulating footballs. On par with spraying silicone on lineman’s jerseys or stickum on receivers hands/gloves, and far less egregious than say…pumping in crowd noise.

The idea that you can even draw a comparison between the acts of Hernandez/Spikes and deflategate shows what a sad, pathetic person you really are.
