Gruden: McCoy and Cousins want to start, “It’s killing them”

Robert Griffin III is the starting quarterback in Washington, but he’s getting a fight from both of the other quarterbacks who started last year.

Coach Jay Gruden said today that all three quarterbacks -- Griffin, Colt McCoy and Kirk Cousins -- have shown him something at minicamp. Gruden said McCoy and Cousins both look like players who can start.

“You see Colt McCoy do some great things today, Kirk Cousins did some good things yesterday. Both of them are making their case known, both of them, like I said before, have had a taste of a starting quarterback job in the NFL and they both want it back real bad. They’re doing an excellent job of competing every day. It’s killing them on the inside, I know, that they’re competing for the backup job right now, but they are doing an excellent job and you can see them all progressing at a good rate,” Gruden said.

Gruden reiterated that Griffin is the clear No. 1 quarterback, and that the competition in the preseason will be between McCoy and Cousins to be the No. 2 quarterback.

Of course, Griffin was the clear No. 1 quarterback at this time last year, too, but as it turned out he only started seven games. It wouldn’t be surprising to see McCoy or Cousins starting at some point this season.
