Bills players adapting to “juggling game” at quarterback

The old football cliche has applied to Rex Ryan’s teams for years: If you’ve got two quarterbacks, you’ve got none.

So you can imagine how confusing it is for the Bills having four.

With no clear-cut favorite between Matt Cassel, EJ Manuel, Tyrod Taylor and heck even Matt Simms, the Bills will head into training camp with uncertainty at the most important position on the field.

The Bills have rotated Cassel and Manuel heavily with the starters, though there are reports Taylor will get every chance to win the job himself. That has created uncertainty among the other players throughout a spring when they’re already digesting the new system of offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

“We’re working with three, four quarterbacks,” running back Fred Jackson said, via Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News. “So it’s a juggling game who we’re going to be playing with, but also we’ve got to know what we’re doing when we get out there.”

The fact it’s up in the air is primarily because of the cast of characters involved. Settling on one of them as soon as possible might help stabilize the rest of the offense, and the fan base, which has reason to worry.

Of course, those fans are sufficiently stirred up that they bought season tickets in record numbers, so maybe it was part of Ryan’s master plan.
