Dennis Pitta expected to start the year on PUP list

Dennis Pitta has made impressive strides in his comeback from a dramatic hip injury, but he’s not quite ready for camp.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, the veteran tight end is likely to open training camp and perhaps the regular season on the physically unable to perform list.

Being on PUP at the start of the regular season would mean he’d miss at least the first six games, after suffering another fractured and dislocated right hip last year. He hasn’t been cleared by doctors to practice, though he has rehabbed to the point of being able to run routes and do individual drills.

Pitta’s due $4 million in guaranteed money this year whether he plays or not, so there’s little incentive for the Ravens to not give him time to get well. But at 30 and coming off two years of injuries and rehab, there’s also not much reason for them to assume he’s ever going to get back to his previous level of play.
