Jack Del Rio: I don’t see why Raiders won’t win the AFC West

AP

The last time the Raiders won the AFC West, it was at the end of the 2002 season, when Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” was the No. 1 song and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was the top movie at the box office. It’s been a long time.

But new Raiders coach Jack Del Rio doesn’t see why the Raiders can’t win the AFC West this year.

“Goal No. 1 is to win our division, and I don’t see why not,” Del Rio said in a video on the team’s website.

Raiders offensive line coach Mike Tice added, “We’re going to be a championship football team.”

In the time since their last playoff appearance, the Raiders have gone from Bill Callahan to Norv Turner to Art Shell to Lane Kiffin to Tom Cable to Hue Jackson to Dennis Allen to Tony Sparano as head coach. All those coaches arrived with optimism that they’d be the ones to win in Oakland. Maybe Del Rio will finally be the coach who can actually turn things around.

  1. I’m old enough to remember when the Raiders were a perennial powerhouse. But I also live in reality and know that my team was mostly average (with a few good years here and there) between ’86 and ’02 and wretched the last dozen years.

At this point, I’ll be satisfied if Del Rio can get the team to play competitively on a consistent basis – no more lying down and being embarrassed by certain opponents. If this happens then the W/L will improve somewhat although unfortunately I don’t think the team has anywhere near the overall talent level to compete for a playoff spot as of yet (chalk that up to the GM).

  2. “Goal No. 1 is to win our division, and I don’t see why not,”

Of course, that is goal #1. It is the goal #1 of all 32 teams.
Its not exactly a Joe Namath type guarantee.

  3. Well Jack one of the main reasons the Raiders won’t win the AFC west is they lack a quality head coach.

  4. How did Jack Del Rio ever get hired again, after he threw his players and assistant coaches under the bus in Jacksonville, in a desperate attempt to keep his job?

  5. I think their only obstacles are the Broncos, Chiefs, and Chargers being about 2 billions times better. But if they can overcome that…well, sure!

  6. I hope they do win their division.
As a casual observer, I don’t see why they won’t either.
They have a really good, young QB, and the rest of the division isn’t getting better, but worse.

    Manning is done.
Rivers is always competitive, but what else do the Chargers have?
The Chiefs always sound like they should be good, just to play out another mediocre season.

I like the Raider’s chances. I’d love to see them get more competitive.
Besides, for how long can you possibly suck?

  7. Top 10 Reason Why the Raiders Won’t Win The AFC WEST:
    #10 KC Chiefs
    #9 SD Chargers
    #8 Denver Broncos
#7 Derek Carr gets lost in the Black Hole
    #6 Philip Rivers
    #5 Peyton Manning
#4 NFL will not let them win
#3 Referees will not them win
#2 Their Delusional Fans think they can win the division
and the #1 reason the Raiders will not win the AFC West

    Jack Del Rio

  8. Other than the lack of a head coach, I see 3 reasons: Broncos, Chiefs, and Chargers.

  9. I think it is shameful that the Raiders have the workout facilities of a high school team. I don’t know why anyone would expect them to compete with the absolute worst resources in football.

  10. Why you won’t win?

    It’s because you’re coaching.

If you were worsening as coach, allegedly lost drive for coaching, and got subpar results with more talent (particularly in Denver), your future in Oakland does not look good.

    Plus, you have Bill Musgrave.

  11. our CBs simply suck and our best S is 56 years old and Philly was happy to see Nate Allen go.. thats why they wont win the division, teams will be passing all over them..

  12. This from the man who put a tree stump and an ax in the locker room back in Jacksonville. Sorry, Chris Hanson.

  13. They are not quite ready talent wise to win the division this year but another good draft and continues improvement from their young players will make them contenders in 2016 I believe. Denver is done after Manning retires and they will probably win 10-11 games this year but no more 13-14 win seasons and running away with the west. San Diego never seems to put it together despite some good talent and Rivers and the rest of the cast is aging. Not sold on any team QBacked by Alex Smith, so The Raiders are ascending and the rest of the division’s teams are in decline or stagnant. I see a good future for the Raiders in the next couple of years.

  14. I like what the Raiders are building out in Oakland. Will they win the division this year? Probably not. But they are a lot closer than most NFL fans give them credit for.

  15. MDS, you never cease to amaze me. This was hardly a Rex Ryanesque prediction this was a comment made during a Raiders coaches reception and it’s was stated more humbly, as you quoted him, than your headline suggests.

Del Rio is not a braggadocious leader. That said, I expect my Raiders to be onto something this year, and next year…. look out.

  16. i just dont see it happening.. for a struggling franchise you need a very special coach or a one of a kind franchise player that can just change the culture.. unfortunately the raiders have none and may be slightly more competitive.. but they will finish in last in that division yet again..

  17. Del Rio is a good coach, and the Raidahhhs look to finally be getting their roster together. The problem is they’ve got a really tough division. The Chiefs aren’t great…but Reid will have them in perennial contender status soon. San Diego also isn’t great, but they are usually quite respectable. And then there’s Denver, which I just don’t think the Raiders are ready for. Hopefully they can be competitive.

  18. Even though he’s dreaming, he made no claim of a dream team.

Nothing to see here folks, move along.

  19. If you think an enimim song and the Lord of the Rings movie is “a long time” then you’re young.

  20. They’ll be better this year but they’re not quite a playoff team yet. They need a much better OL and DBs to become contenders. The offense has potential to give fans some exciting games this year, though.

  21. Peyton manning has not been defeated by the raiders since he’s been in Denver. I have no way of checking, but I’m pretty sure he’s also been pulled early in every one of those victories.
Crawl before you walk, JDR and Oakland fans.

  22. Uh…Because the team, the ownership and the coach pretty much suck.
And not that it has an effect on the team itself but have you really ever seen a Raiders fan, it’s always some white trash looking guy with a faded out Tim Brown jersey.

  23. What is he supposed to say? “Open up your wallets people, buy season tickets, and get ready for another 4-12 season?”

As long as anyone under 26, especially Carr, Mack, Cooper, Jackson, Latavious, Sio, Jelly, DJ Hayden, and TJ Carrie progress, that’s all that matters.

  24. I think the Broncos will win it but who gets second spot is definitely up in the air. The other 3 all remain somewhat equal and light years behind Peyton.

  25. I can already see three problems with that.

    1. Broncos
    2. Chiefs
    3. Chargers

    =================================

When there are 3 teams light years ahead of you that can’t win a Super Bowl, you know you have it bad.

  26. Jack, how many times did you win the division in the nine years you were coach of the Jags?

  27. Are you kidding me? the guy couldnt even coach a highly talented broncos Defense to stop weaker offenses….

what makes him think he is gonna do better with a full team to coach?

is it the time he coached a highly talented broncos team with a prime PFM? for a few games as the interim?

because he wasnt coaching the quarterback (PFM) and O coordinator was

    this dude is delusional

look i believe the radiers are gonna be a little bit better this season ….. but that is because of Carr

    but win the division?

  28. Maybe not win the division but I definitely think they will be competitive. A good young QB with tons of potential one of the best young LBs in the game… They are on the upswing. The NFL is better when the raiders are good so I hope they get there…

    _______________________________

You are correct. It is not exactly a Joe Namath type guarantee because Jack didn’t make a guarantee.

Definition of guarantee: “a formal promise or assurance (typically in writing) that certain conditions will be fulfilled.” Joe made a guarantee.

Definition of goal: “the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.” Jack identified a goal.

    Class dismissed.

  30. I’m a HUGE Raiders fan but every year the Raiders players and coaches say the same thing, “We’ve got a lot of talent”, “This roster is solid”, “I see us contending”, etc, etc, etc. The thing is this year *could* finally be a year that the Raiders make some noise. The roster is dramatically better and the coaching staff is solid. (Side note: Still don’t understand the Dennis Allen hiring but that’s another story.) What I’d like to see is for the Raiders to follow a Del Rio philosophy and that is to “Just keep chopping wood.” What this means to me is keep working hard, work on your craft, take responsibility, and do your job. I think the Raiders can sneak up on other teams this year and it would be cool if they did this stealthily in a way where the other team said (after the game), “Holy crap, we didn’t realize the Raiders were capable of playing that well. We took them for granted.” I see a turnaround season, and 8-8 or 9-7 is about as high as I would go. The following season will be much better. The long wait is over Raiders fans, the Raiders are on the right track. Jack/Team: Keep chopping wood. Good times are ahead.

  31. “I don’t see why Raiders won’t win the AFC West”

    ————————————–

    Reason 1) The Denver Broncos

    Reason 2) Peyton Manning

Reason 3) The San Diego Chargers

    Reason 4) Phillip Rivers

  32. Win the division??? Maybe you should focus on winning a game or two first, Jack. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.

  33. The Raiders had a brutal schedule last year. They had to play the NFC West in addition to their own tough division. Out of their last 6 games, they defeated the Chiefs, the 49ers, and the Bills. They are finally out of cap hell and drafting well. There is much promise in Oakland.

  34. Wow!!!! And Joe thinks the circus has come to Buffalo. Maybe they stopped in Oakland too. Better yet, go to the circus in Toronto and enjoy yourself, take the family. You certainly can’t take them to an NFL game!

  35. @ bigmark67 – I agree that Denver will probably only win 10 or 11 games this year too. But that’s still more than what the rest of the division will win. And when Manning goes and if we decide to keep OZ, he’s still gonna be better than Carr!!!

The Raiders aren’t even close to being a playoff caliber team. Maybe if you guys signed a QB who can actually play at the NFL level you’re chances would improve. Outside of that, that’s just wishful thinking by the average Raiders fan.

  36. “PLAYoffs? Don’t talk about PLAYoffs. You kiddin me? PLAYOFFS? I just hope we can win a game.”

    Jim Mora

(Man…those were the days of really great HC interveiws!!)

  37. CAPTION:

    “Hey LOOK…I’ve got THUMBS!!!”

(Gotta love the NFL. They move bad coaches around the way the Catholic Church moves around bad priests, and school systems move around bad teachers.)

  38. I’ll be the first to say it, I’ve never liked Del Rio as head coach or as a D coach. He’s never wowed me with anything more than what other guys have done over the years. He’s a nice guy who means well, but that doesn’t make him a good coach.

Bringing in more talent this year doesn’t change anything for Chokeland. For the past 20 years or so, they’ve had a ton of talent on every team and still they can’t get the job done. This season isn’t going to be any different.

Until ownership changes and they find a GM who can actually manage, Chokeland is always gonna be the way it was under Al– filled with empty promises, trading away their best players and then firing the coach after a season or two. This franchise just doesn’t understand rebuild and so they keep making an effort to rebuild every single year, which is why they keep landing themselves in last place year after year after year.

    ——————–
Manning doesn’t get pulled out of games. As for Oakland, 6 wins this season is probably a more realistic goal.

  40. For starters the biggest problem besides qb since 2002 are

Bill Callahan, Norv Turner, Art Shell, Lane Kiffin, Tom Cable, Hue Jackson, and Dennis Allen (Tony S).

Not a single one of those guys have got an NFL head coaching job since besides Norv, and we know how that worked out

Looking at that list and to think you now have Del Rio (and Norton) there is reason to get excited. He is the only one besides Art Shell ever to be a head coach prior, and remained employed.

  41. Yes … it’s easy to call down a team when it’s down but seriously 2002 they were in the SB.
Only 15 other teams have been to the SB since 2002 so please don’t make it sound it’s an eternity.
Now name me the 16 teams that have not been to the SB since 2002.
    Chiefs ? ….. NOT
    Chargers? …. NOT
Broncos? …. once and they got blown out too.
So please stop with the trolling.

  42. Just coach the team dude. No need for silly bold statements like that. Aside from the donkeys being the clear favorite to win the division (barring injury to peyton)..the main reason we won’t win the division is due to the schedule wegot slammed with. 6 eeast coast road games with a 10:00 am start. Just winning 7 or 8 games will be a challenge.

  43. Just Stay Delusional Baby! Stay Delusional!

God, the Raiders make me laugh. Keep it coming man, don’t ever stop.

Hey Jack, you wanna lighten up on the sauce a little? Geesh!

  44. Jaguars fan here and I hate Del Rio for his drafts, play calling, and tanking a season to get himself fired, plus the most abysmal coach speak interviews….I once privately asked Brian Sexton (voice of the Jags at the time) why he still continues to do the ‘Jack Del Rio Show’ and his reply- because we’re under contract to do so…rolling his eyes. Easily the worst hour in radio all week in Jacksonville. That said….

    David Carr
    Khalil Mack
    Amari Cooper

At least they’ve drafted well and have some franchise faces. Del Rio left the cupboard bare in Jax. Don’t let del Rio near your draft.

  45. Jack Del Rio never was the sharpest tool in the shed.

Maybe, MAYBE, he can turn them around in a couple of years… after Peyton retires, if Rivers moves on, and if Andy Reid can’t get a WR to catch a TD pass (though they just got Maclin so…).

I like the enthusiasm, but THIS year? Makes him sound like a borderline lunatic.

Well at least they got a decent and improving QB, you also haven’t been able to say that in a while.

  46. This is kinda laughable them winning the AFC west is a ? they can make the playoffs but they did beat the toughest team in the AFC west (chiefs and they picked up some really great players in the 2015 draft

  47. As a Pats fan, the hate from the Raider fans over the “tuck rule” and all the other crap, gets old. Yet, through it all the league was and will be better off when they return to being a competitive member of the NFL. Hope it’s this year.

  48. I think the Raiders are maybe 2 years away from being a perennial playoff team. But that depends on the drafts we have. We need star players at CB, DE, WR, and RG and I think we’ll be okay. A lot of holes but were surly getting there. I like our young players at all the other positions.

  49. A few reasons why the Raiders will not be left in the cellar this year.

    1. Head Coach is an upgrade, but the assistant coaches are huge upgrades!

    2. Better talent, and the better talent from our 2014 draft are now a year older with better coaching.

    3. McFadden = gone

    4. Amari Cooper = here

    5. KC lost some good players

    6. KC has Andy Reid, he always has a few good years, nothing that great

    7. Gary Kubiak, seriously?

    8. Peyton now goes from a 3 or WR set to just two, I am sure his numbers wont be as impressive.

    9. The Chargers, have good coaching, but they tried to trade their QB, you really think Rivers feels great about that?

    10. The Chargers made no significant upgrades, so I don’t see them doing so great again.

  50. As a Dolphins fan, I’m largely indifferent on the Raiders. But in a QB driven league, they seem to have that piece figured out. Sample size relatively small (and yes, 1 yr is small), but if I’m an OAK fan, I’m very optimistic re: Carr’s 2014 season.

Couple that with a new WR in Cooper, one of the better young LB’s in Mack and some other nice pieces they have and I don’t think they are too far away from at least being competitive. I assume even being competitive would be welcome relief to a long-suffering fan base.

No, they aren’t going to win AFCW this year. And frankly, thy’re prob. not going to win it next year. But if I’m a Raiders fan, I’m feeling better than I have in awhile….

  51. Del Rio is a smart guy. You have to get your team to believe. Dennis Allen never exuded any confidence in his players.

Realistically winning 7 games would be a very positive season. But in 2016 the Raiders could arguably be the favorites to win the AFC west.

  52. 10. The Chargers made no significant upgrades, so I don’t see them doing so great again.

    =================================
    This is a joke, right?
Jacoby Jones for special teams (Chargers were last in that regard, so he is definitely an upgrade)

Orlando Franklin at guard (upgrade over Troutman)

Melvin Gordon (Probable upgrade over Mathews)
Danny Woodhead healthy (He makes the entire offense better)

    Ladarius Green is ready

    Stevie Johnson (Slot receiver upgrade)

CB/Safety looking to be the best the Chargers have seen in almost 10 years. Verrett will be pro-bowler this year. Weddle will do as he always does.

Chargers will win the division this year.

He probably stopped drinking the minute he left Denver. Boozing seems to be a job requirement in that organization.

  56. What he said and what the headline is, is not the same.

“Goal No. 1 is to win our division, and I don’t see why not,”

If for some reason one had to define what he said, this is more accurate:

I don’t see why winning our division shouldn’t be our #1 goal.

True even for an 0-16 team.

Why you didn’t use his quote as the headline is why we don’t like media. -1 PFT

    12 years without a winning season. 12.

There’s no need to troll that.

  58. Del Rio’s kinda spilling the news that all these failed and prospectve coaches don’t want anyone to hear, namely that ANY football team can be a contender ANY year.

It’s been that way since Bert Jones. Recently, Sean Payton and Andy Reid has shown the NFL how to do it. It’s just a matter of having a decent owner, a proper management team and a coach that has a little imagination and secures the right players.

  59. Jacoby Jones for special teams (Chargers were last in that regard, so he is definitely an upgrade)

Orlando Franklin at guard (upgrade over Troutman)

    _ – – – – – – – – – – – – –

    wow…….those are impressive upgrades

  60. Best thing that could have ever happened to the Broncos defense was Jack Del Rio taking the Raider job. Wade Phillips will allow their talented defense to be much more aggressive. Raiders will continue their thirteen year run of mediocrity.

  61. Haha careful Jack, now you and Reggie are going to get fired this year if the Raiders don’t do well. Nobody did less with more last year than Jack. Pro Bowl players everywhere and could not get the D to play well at the right times. Oakland has half the talent Denver does. Good luck Raider fans, teams getting better but you guys are still last in the division.

  62. “I’m old enough to remember when the Raiders were a perennial powerhouse. But I also live in reality and know that my team was mostly average (with a few good years here and there) between ’86 and ’02 and wretched the last dozen years.

I am a Viking fan but back in the old AFL/NFL days my AFL team was the Raiders and have always maintained a soft spot for them. I hope all you Raider fans have the pleasure of returning to the days of the “Pride and Poise” boys of the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s those were some really great teams and the epic battles they forged against the Chiefs, Dolphins and Steelers during those decades were some of the best football I have ever watched in over 50 years of watching pro football. Hope your return to greatness and glory is swift!

  63. I don’t see why not. And if not this year, then certainly next year, and for years to come, as Oakland is the only team in that division with a promising young quarterback, while the others in the division are old (San Diego, Denver) or just average (Kansas City).

  64. Well, divisional games will account for 6 losses.. They also play the afc north this year so at least 3 more losses to the bengals, steelers, Ravens, maybe even the Browns. Throw in packers, lions, Vikings.. That’s 12 losses minimum.

  65. Ill tell you why you wont win. First you destroyed a decent Jag / Tom Coughlin team before you were run out of town. You threw all of you coaches under the bus EVERY year. You turn over of Asst. Coahes was an embarrassment. You have no eye for talent. 90% of you draft picks were busts and you have the worst draft pics in Jaguars history. Examples included Matt Jones. Derick Harvey, Reggie Williams, Blaine Gabbert, Byron Leftwhich, Drayton Florence, Jerry Porter…ect. ect. But wait, you say that would be the GM’s fault. Not Quite..Del Rio had the final say in ALL draft pics. That is a fact. Del Rio is not a head coach. No way No how..Raiders are in for a several more years of losing.
