Anyone expecting a quick resolution to the quarterback competition in Bills camp should probably reset their expectations.
The Bills have Matt Cassel, EJ Manuel and Tyrod Taylor taking turns with the first team and all three will run two possessions with the starter during Saturday night’s scrimmage, which makes it hard to point to a frontrunner at this point. On Friday, coach Rex Ryan said that the team might keep it that way right up until their opener against the Colts whether they’ve settled on a starter or not.
“This will probably play out,” Ryan said, via ESPN.com. “Indianapolis might not know who the quarterback is until we play them. We may know, but they may not know.”
Ryan said that the team could whittle the list of competitors down to two at some point in camp, but that the team would have to see if “a little bit of separation” happens in a group that has to pick up their level of play from where it has been thus far. Based on that assessment, it’s hard to believe anyone in Indy will be losing too much sleep over the identity of Buffalo’s quarterback next month.
