Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham believes he has a torn ACL

AP

The Steelers are still awaiting MRI results on kicker Shaun Suisham’s injured knee, but Suisham’s belief is that the injury is a season-ender.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Suisham has told people he thinks he tore his ACL.

Losing Suisham, who has made more than 90 percent of his field goals in three consecutive seasons, would hurt. The Steelers don’t have another kicker on the roster, and there aren’t a lot of good kickers available at the moment. The 39-year-old Jay Feely, who played in four games for the Bears last year, may be the best veteran currently on the market.

This is what happens when kickers try to play football. He has only himself to blame.

  2. gtodriver says: Aug 10, 2015 1:43 PM

Sad to see this happen to anyone at anytime. Even more so in a preseason game.

It sucks to see someone get hurt in a meaningless preseason game. Anyone who doesn’t think kickers matter didn’t see Blair Walsh go 0/3 last year at Detroit in a game the Vikings lost by 2.

I bet morten Anderson can still nail it 50 yards

  5. stillers213 says: Aug 10, 2015 1:48 PM

I remember thinking last season that Suisham was always farther down the field on kicks than most. I always admired Shaun’s eagerness to be in the middle of the play, but it got him in trouble this time.

Why wouldn’t team rules prevent Kickers from even attempting tackles in a meaningless pre-season game?

Upside of your starting Kicker making the tackle in a useless exhibition contest? Zero.

Downside risk? It’s large, and it’s obvious.

    This was so unnecessary.

Umm ok, so the Steelers now lose 11 games instead of 10.

  8. bassplucker says: Aug 10, 2015 1:55 PM

Jay Feely is not the answer, especially for an outdoor, cold-weather team. They’d be better off auditioning young legs off the street and hoping for the best.

Not a Steelers fan, but kicking as well as he does in their home stadium is pretty awesome. No one likes kicking there.

Somebody bail out Jeff Reed and sober him up.

  11. mmmpierogi says: Aug 10, 2015 2:02 PM

Maybe they can see if Jeff Reed’s available — heard he was apparently behaving true to form yesterday at the HoF game.

  12. paulieorkid says: Aug 10, 2015 2:02 PM

Available PKs? I could be wrong, but I believe the following are currently unemployed: Nate Freese, Billy Cundiff, the aforementioned Jay Feeley, Alex Henery.

Kai Forbath (Skins) is struggling and the camp competitor (Ty Long) is doing a little better. If Skins cut Forbath and Forbath signs with Pittsburgh, recent history tells us he will go on to kick even better for his next team. See also Graham Gano, Nick Novak, and Suisham himself.

Or the Eagles/Packers playoff game back in 2010 where David Akers went 1/3 and the Eagles lost by 5. The missed FGs were 41 and 34 yards. Ones that should have been pretty much automatic.

Ya, but that should easily beat the rioters from the Charm by two games.

Sad to lose a kicker like that in preseason.

The last time the Steelers were desperate for a kicker they found him unemployed, lining in Canada. Shaun Suisham! They’ll find another one. (I wish announcers would stop calling him “squeezem”). Be well and come back Shaun.

Call me crazy, but isn’t there some kind of technology available that would quickly provide evidence of whether or not one suffered a ligament tear?

  18. hikermike says: Aug 10, 2015 2:30 PM

    I’ll bet Kickalicious is available.

Good luck with the PK thing, from a Lions fan who has been there. Thanks Nate Freese!

Nic it’s a 3 second knee push by the doc and he can tell 100%. They’ll do an MIR for confirmation…but the doc is always 100% by doing the push test.
    Cardinal fans still hate Pitt…
Another poster was cortex Kickers need to stay away from tackling…hope every other coach is telling their K today…we need you more than a tackle downfield.

It wasn’t like he was going to be needed to kick in the Super Bowl this year.

  21. STILLlolatpatshaters says: Aug 10, 2015 2:43 PM

I bet Dr Rydze would work miracles with that knee.

Everyone knows he’s the only reason why the Steelers were any “good” in recent years so why not give him a call?

Pittsburgh is definitely not the easiest place to kick, either.

Why do Cardinals fans hate Pitt? Since 2007, it has been at least a dozen former Steelers players and at least 4 Steelers coaches that have moved to the Cardinals. Blame Kurt Warner and the Cardinals final drive defense on the Super Bowl loss.

I’m sure it’s just torn-ACL-like symptoms. rub some dirt on it and walk it off.

    Time for a Gramática comeback!

  26. johngaltx says: Aug 10, 2015 3:53 PM

Why is the kickoff still in use? Put the ball on the twenty and forget about having 21 borderline players crashing into one another and risk having your #1 scorer getting smashed into and missing a season.

  27. clashpoint says: Aug 10, 2015 5:43 PM

Anyone trolling football injuries is not a football fan, and should shut up about football.

Bad luck for the Steelers and Sushi, that guy is pretty clutch as far as kickers go. Luckily the Steelers have been practicing their goal line plays in camp, not that you’d know it from last night’s game. The over/under on Steelers two point conversion attempts just went up in Vegas.

Since Rydze was dismissed, Steelers have a 72-40 regular season record, 3 division titles, 4 playoff appearances, 5 playoff game wins, 2 Afc championships, 1 Super Bowl championship and 2 defensive players of the year.

In about three weeks kickers are going to start getting cut. Bunch of them on teams right now basically pushing last years kicker. If you’re looking for a franchise QB that would be something but a kicker? You’ll have 20 of ’em looking for jobs very shortly.

Just read a report linking Billy Cundiff to the Steelers. Even as a Ravens fan I couldn’t wish that kind of evil on anyone even the Steelers.
