Sluggish start for RG3, Redskins includes Niles Paul injury

AP

Robert Griffin III played two series in the Redskins-Browns preseason opener Thursday night, completing 4-of-8 passes and taking a bunch of stiff shots after delivering those throws.

The Redskins got three points to show for his work. Pierre Garcon dropped what might have been a touchdown and certainly would have been a gain of 40-plus yards on the first drive after getting behind Browns cornerback Justin Gilbert.

Griffin’s pass was on the money, too, but Garcon didn’t finish the play. That drive ended when Griffin really had no one open on third down and tried to force one to rookie Evan Spence.

On the second drive Grffin completed a pass for no gain on a third and one but Alfred Morris kept the drive alive on fourth down. The Redskins settled for a field goal after that; on a third down miss Griffin took a big shot from blitzing Browns cornerback K’Waun Williams.

Griffin finished with 36 passing yards, all of those coming on three completions to Ryan Grant.

The Redskins lost tight end Niles Paul to injury late in the first quarter. He was carted off with a left leg injury after being rolled up on by Browns linebacker Craig Robertson. Trainers immediately placed an air cast on Paul.

Paul had the best season of his career with 39 catches last year. The Redskins held their other two veteran tight ends, Jordan Reed and Logan Paulsen, out of the game with injuries.

The Patriots have great players and coaches since 2000’s, why do they always cheat instead of straight up play?

  2. gurnblanstonreturns says: Aug 13, 2015 8:57 PM

Griffin’s pass to Garcon was NOT on the money. He hesitated in the pocket, then threw late with Garcon having to slow down and twist his body. Garcon should have – and will almost always make that catch – but it was a bad pass. Griffin does this all the time. There are many examples of wide open receivers waiting for Griffin’s pass and TDs turn into long gains or incompletions and the drive sputters.

    Griffin cannot play.

Not sure what game you are watching. Griffin looked decent in two series, NOT sluggish at all. Had Garcon not dropped the would-be 60 yrd TD, he would have had an EXCELLENT first half.

Hopefully RGIII is renting, cuz this will be his last yr in Danny’s house of horrors…bobbie G sucks…

  5. senatorblutarsky says: Aug 13, 2015 9:11 PM

Bob Griffin will not make it through the season. This will probably be his last year in the NFL.

  6. doe22us says: Aug 13, 2015 9:13 PM

Was the throw late a little and behind, but still Garcon should have caught it..

  7. andreboy1 says: Aug 13, 2015 9:24 PM

Griffin is just the QB equivalent of his favorite restaurant-Hooters

    Mediocre

    Time to call Chris Cooley.

Pretty sure RG3 was anything but sluggish, looked better tonight than he did all of last year…

  12. gurnblanstonreturns says: Aug 13, 2015 9:39 PM

I know what game I’m watching because it is so similar to earlier Griffin efforts. Two five yard outs to Grant. A three yard run instead of throwing to open receivers on a third down. A late, underthrown long ball to Garcon resulting in an incompletion. And, on the next play, a wild, high and inside throw on a 3rd down, five yard hitch that could have been disastrous – and did end the drive. And, Griffin taking a bunch of hits.

    Griffin cannot play.

  13. bigbenh8tr says: Aug 13, 2015 9:46 PM

Hate the Skins and RG3 but he looked fine besides holding onto the ball too long. Ordinary

  14. dynam01 says: Aug 13, 2015 9:47 PM

RG3 still can’t read coverages entering his 4th year in the league, which mean he’ll never get it. His mechanics are a mess, which mean’t they always will be. He’d rather listen to his dad’s advice than that of his coaches. He still hasn’t learned to slide, or avoid massive hits like the one he took tonight. Another injury is just a matter of time, which is probably what Gruden is counting on.

  15. realfootballfan says: Aug 13, 2015 10:17 PM

Griffin actually looked fine today. I guess somebody’s watching highlights or the stats instead of the games, lol.

Griffin’s pass to Garcon was NOT on the money.

you are clearly just a RG3 hater because that was a good pass, it wasnt great, but it wasnt bad and saying he can’t play is stupid. he was 4 of 8, not a bad game at all…had Garcon caught that pass (which by the way he SHOULD have caught) he would’ve been 5 of 8 with a TD and we would be talking about what a great game he had…..and by the way, the 3 yard run was a good play by Griffin since it got a first down and he had the first down and the ball to Garcon may have been under thrown, but it still should’ve been caught. i thought Griffin had a good game.

  17. beerbudsnbevo says: Aug 13, 2015 10:37 PM

The Skins are gonna be a trainwreck.

That’s gonna collide with the Philly trainwreck.

    Can’t wait

Kirk cousins is awesome! Cut colt McCoy..Ross will make the practice squad..G3 missed x-lax..still looked sharper then usual..oh and p smith will be a beast

  19. roylp says: Aug 13, 2015 11:10 PM

    Lol

let’s break down every QB like you guys do Griffin.

  20. timtomandkevin says: Aug 13, 2015 11:22 PM

    Portis is sideline reporter.

  21. ggagne66 says: Aug 13, 2015 11:29 PM

Everyone’s praising Griffin and the line. He played one quarter and was hit at least 5 times. Might be a short season for Bob. Looked very ordinary, which I guess is an improvement.

  22. laserw says: Aug 13, 2015 11:40 PM

The truth about the long incompletion is not being stated here. Garcon was going inside, Griffin threw the ball to the outside forcing Garcon to adjust and try to catch the ball across his body – he was wide open and Griffin clearly did not throw the ball accurately. Had he thrown the ball to the inside as Garcon was heading, it would have been a touchdown. Griffin cannot throw the deep ball accurately.

If you doubt me revisit the video on youtube about this play – it clearly shows Garcon going inside, Griffin tossing the ball to the sidelines away from him forcing Garcon to adjust his route.

  23. skins1970 says: Aug 14, 2015 12:33 AM

RG3 played well not great. Yes he held on to the ball a little too long on that pass to Pierre Garcon but he still should have caught it, The only real negative I saw were those 2 fade passes to Garcon in the end zone those were not good throws.

  24. mitchem85 says: Aug 14, 2015 1:40 AM

The unmitigated hate towards Griffin makes me sick, some of you here need to get a life.

  25. therealsmiley says: Aug 14, 2015 6:31 AM

Everyone slow down….Cousins looked good. RGIII looked ok…Colt looked lost. Cousins throws over the middle and is not scared to do to so. RGIII and Colt just seemed not willing to throw in the center of the field. Ross, Plummer and our new RB looked good. Ross is going to turn some heads. Preston Smith’s sack came against 2nd or 3rd stringers…..he looks a little slower against the starters but it takes time and it is a process. TE is a concern, we might be calling Sleepy Davis and Cooley. The good news is the DLine got penetration (without a blitz)….it’s gonna be a decent line boy!! Hail!

  26. therealsmiley says: Aug 14, 2015 6:33 AM

PS did I mention Cousins looked really good in the pocket. The guy threw INTs last year because of the leaks on that line (which looked better…Moses will be the key at RT….he’s still reaching a lot).

  27. therealsmiley says: Aug 14, 2015 6:35 AM

PPS Scherff was 15 yards down field (3 yards past the RB) on a running play. I don’t care where we play him….just keep him on the field.

  28. therealsmiley says: Aug 14, 2015 6:37 AM

And I think our center play d most of the game…check the tape?

  29. hugeredskinsfan says: Aug 14, 2015 7:59 AM

Portis was an excellent player… he was terrible on the sidelines… haha

  30. ludacrish05 says: Aug 14, 2015 8:42 AM

    Kirk Cousins, please…

  31. cowboysallday says: Aug 14, 2015 9:21 AM

Lol to the people saying rg3 looked fine- you don’t know football. Did you guys see him in the redzone? 2 or 3 back to back plays he throw the ball out of bounds on a fade route…that’s pretty bad

  32. We Buy Homes Syracuse NY says: Aug 14, 2015 9:57 AM

Hows sad is it that Griffin has played so badly for his fans that they get ecstatic when he actually takes a 3 step drop properly or completes a 5 yard pass. RG fans aren’t redskin fans, they are RG fans. I hope he moves on so we can get rid of the annoyance.

  33. skins1970 says: Aug 14, 2015 10:45 AM

If you don’t like RG3 please stop commenting he wasn’t great but he played well. The people who thought he was terrible didn’t watch the game, have a irrational hate for him or like Kirk Cousins who always has played well against the Cleveland Browns but not so much against anybody else.

  34. skinsfanwill says: Aug 14, 2015 11:36 AM

The clear problem here is the damn coach still trying to throw the ball on the 1 yard line. I did also notice Cousins playing nearly all of his snaps out of the shotgun and running and read option play. Something clearly RG3 should be doing. I think the coach is setting him up for failure. On many occasions, the play calling had all the wr’s running 5 yard patterns. With the speed they have on the outside they should be stretching the field. That opens everything else up. Which is what the coach did when Cousins came in the game. Too bad Cousins already has shown that he can’t handle pressure.

  35. angermanagement says: Aug 14, 2015 12:05 PM

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Cousins thrive if he was playing with the first stringers. Morris/Jones is a great RB combo, the o-line is better, generally good WRs…

  36. shalakka says: Aug 14, 2015 12:51 PM

the offense looked vanilla when RG was in there and totally changed when cousins got in? anybody else notice that?
the dropped pass would have made the stats better. and RG only played a short time.
the defense didn’t look great either.
    just nice to see football!

  37. nc04bear says: Aug 14, 2015 2:08 PM

No, what is sad is all you experts who are now pro commentators and jump to conclusions after one meaningless pre-season game. Garcon gets a pass on that simply b/c ITS THE FIRST GAME. If you wanna talk PRE-DESTINATION then lets talk Cousins interception fest. But granted he could make up for it, but that is something that is hard to just try out in the middle of a season. Same goes for great RB’s who put the ball on the ground too often. Jimmy Johnson would issue pink slips on Monday for a crucial fumble. So just chill people. You are not 3step, 5step, footwork, throwing motion, defense reading professionals so I just laugh when all this comes out.

  38. nc04bear says: Aug 14, 2015 2:12 PM

If the Skins had not sucked when RG3 came to town it is possible he could have remained healthy but he tried to be Superman for YOU the Skins fan and he took YOU to the playoffs and he had YOU up 14-0 before Seattle knew what hit em and then the injury took over.

Rg3 never had a chance in DC after that and YOU wont let him forget it…ever. I kind of hope he does move on cuz I don’t think Gruden is the answer for him, but Dallas just might be cuz Jerry loves the kid and that would be so awesome to see RG3 start against the Skins and have YOU say uh, well, uh, lets see, why did we get rid of him?

  39. getyourownname says: Aug 14, 2015 2:33 PM

If you read the Washington paper you see the following headlines/summaries:

“RGIII showed what he needed to”

“a good start from Griffin…. showed Griffin had improved in all the aspects he needed to from last season”

This morning on radio their in-house Little Danny shill/announcer Larry Michael could barely contain his optimism. Another preseason win and you’ll be hearing the team and fans spinning the “P” word and Joe Theismann comparing RGIII to Aaron Rodgers.

In short, the delusion will continue.

  40. therealsmiley says: Aug 14, 2015 2:45 PM

    No conclusions….just observations. Hail!
