Chancellor would lose $267,647 a week for an in-season holdout

Getty Images

If Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor is serious about his threat to continue holding out into the regular season, he’s thinking about costing himself a serious amount of money.

At Chancellor’s salary of $4,550,000, he would lose $267,647 for each week of the regular season that he misses.

Of course, Chancellor is already costing himself about that much for each week he misses camp: The Seahawks are fining Chancellor $30,000 a day for each day that he’s absent, and the team can force him to pay back $250,000 of his signing bonus. That’s close to $1 million he’s lost already.

To engage in a holdout that’s costing him that much money, Chancellor must think there’s a good chance that the Seahawks will eventually relent, give him a raise and forgive those fines. And the Seahawks have shown in the past that they’re willing to consider doing that with other players. So maybe as the season approaches, the Seahawks will blink first and give Chancellor the money he seeks.

Chancellor is playing a dangerous game, however. If the Seahawks hold the line, he’ll have to show up eventually if he ever wants an NFL paycheck again. And when he does report, he’ll have lost a whole lot of money.

So it wouldn’t be surprising if the bluster from Chancellor’s agent in August changes into Chancellor reporting to the team in September, without a new contract.

Trade him for picks and continue to have a long successful run.

  2. packergator says: Aug 21, 2015 8:35 AM

Not to mention the amount he’d lose on any new contract if the Seahawks keep winning without him.

  3. whenwilliteverend says: Aug 21, 2015 8:39 AM

I hope the Seahawks draw a line in the sand and tell him they will NOT forgive the fines. Some team has to have the stones to stand up to these guys who are dissatisfied with a contract which they just signed. I hope they take that part of the signing bonus too. As was mentioned in a previous story, if they re-work his contract then Bennett will want his re-worked as well. Then Marshawn Lynch will want more money again.

The Seahawks should just tell him to look at all the money they gave Wilson and Wagner and say they don’t have any more. So he can either play for a “measly” $4.5M (and the pro-rated signing bonus) or he can hold out and throw away money.

As they always said in the Army….”You can make a wish in one hand and crap in the other and see which one fills up faster.”

  4. bassplucker says: Aug 21, 2015 8:40 AM

Wish I could afford to throw that kind of money away. To put it in perspective, that one week of pay would buy a really nice house free and clear (at least in some parts of the country still). Think about it.

As a Seahawks fan I say be a man and own up to the contract that you signed. The next guy will always

players contracts should be guaranteed and neither side should be allowed to renegotiate. both sides signed a legal document and both sides need to live up to it.

In the NFL success usually comes back to bite you in the butt, as everyone wants to get paid for their contributions to the success.

Besides Chancellor comparing his contract to his teammates who’ve recently been rewarded , he would also be comparing it to someone like S Devon McCourty of the Patriots who signed a 9 million dollar contract in the offseason.

Pro Football Focus has him ranked as a good, but not great player. As opposed to Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman in the Legion of Boom, along with Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett and Bobby Wagner, who are ranked as great players on the scouting scale PFF has.

When you have a great D-Line that provides pressure to make bad throws and great coverage by your top corner, it’s easier to make plays. He’s a solid player, but not worth the trouble. I would deal him for picks at this point. If I was the GM I would sign all the elite-level players to long-term deals and let the good, but not great players go.

Otherwise, they’ll start to have really bad salary cap issues.

This is Seattle’s version of Lawyer Milloy, the good, but not great (ranking-wise) safety for the Patriots who let him go five days before the start of the 2003 NFL season and ended up on the Buffalo Bills. They ended up still having a top defense and defeated the Carolina Panthers to win the Superbowl.

  13. Fried Toast says: Aug 21, 2015 9:12 AM

Absolutely one of my favorite players on the team. Love Kam!

BUT, man up, dude. If the Hawks don’t ding him for every single penny he owes them for showing up, I’ll lose more respect for the front office.

I’ve loved the Seahawks for as long as I can remember, but the current team are starting to erode their SB48 goodwill. I’m perfectly fine with trading away Bennett as he seems to think that he needs more money, too (that being said, at least he showed up!)

The greed is insane. It’s a direct reflection on what’s wrong with our country today. And yes, #3, I’m looking at you, too.

  18. Straight Cash Homie says: Aug 21, 2015 9:17 AM

While I’m not a fan of the Seahawks I have zero problem with a player trying to squeeze a little more juice out of an orange, so to speak. Get the money while you can because you’re one injury away from no paycheck or if you have a down season getting your contract “renegotiated” for way less than you were making previously. If the contracts were fully guaranteed like the NBA/MLB then I’d side with the owners and say play your contract out. But being this is the NFL and a contract is basically the equivalent of a scratch off lottery ticket you have to get paid for your production while your able to still produce before that lottery ticket gets torn up and thrown away.

  19. bbfe says: Aug 21, 2015 9:18 AM

Well as a Patriots fan, I enjoy seeing teams rise to the top and then tumble down under their own weight. It just magnifies the Patriots greatness.

  20. phrancheyez says: Aug 21, 2015 9:21 AM

He’s a good safety, but he’s not worth a raise.

The problem with Seattle is that their defense has been so good, that everyone on the defense thinks it’s a result of their own play. None of them buy into anyone else around them making them look good, or the scheme, or position coaches or anything else.

To these self-righteous players, nothing around them matters. They themselves made the defense good, and everyone around them looked good as a result.

The problem is, when everyone on your defense thinks like that (and they almost all do), everyone wants big money. And some will eventually get cut or traded because of it, and get their money from another team. They’ll be cut in 1-2 years because they aren’t producing, but they will have still made their money. So in hindsight, you can’t really blame them.

I really hope Seattle doesn’t give in.

  21. jonevans511 says: Aug 21, 2015 9:21 AM

Who are you people to say he’s greedy? He’s earned the Seahawks much more money than he’s earned for himself. MUCH MORE. He’s unhappy with his pay, who are you to say to he doesn’t deserve more? I absolutely loathe the Hawks but even if I were a fan I’d much rather have Kam happy and higher-paid than unhappy and not reporting. If you really think this “Legion of Boom” is going to perform at the same level without him you’re drunk, but it goes even deeper than that. Pro Athletes are people too, despite the fact many of you seem to think otherwise. They see what goes on in terms of their teammates’ contracts and guess what? Certain things bother them! If in this case Chancellor is a little ticked that Wilson is getting what’s getting , he’s not mad AT HIM. He’s mad at the situation, reevaluates what he’s done for this team versus what RW has done, and says you know what? This is the point where I’m going to push for more money. I’m not saying it definitely is this way now, but I cannot blame him one bit given the way the NFL is structured if this is the case. “Oh, QBs are the most important so you should pay them handsomely, but not the defensive studs who effectively won us our first SB”. Just like a team can offer you a crazy deal and cut your a$$ before paying even half of it, players can become upset with their current deals and want a new one. It’s not that serious, let the grown-ups in these situations handle the negotiations and it will all play out. For many of you to bash the players in these cases, especially talented, valuable players, is to overlook the greed on the part of owners and that’s whats sad to me.

Before you all jump up and down while whining about your how job won’t let you renegotiate mid-contract, this is not about you. You do not work as an NFL athlete. It’s a completely different animal so please stop acting like you’re in any way equivalent to Kam or any other NFL player with a contract situation. Stop it.

  22. Fried Toast says: Aug 21, 2015 9:21 AM

I think just about every fanbase in the country told you that goodwill would fall in the face of greed. The fact that you thought it would at all shows your naiveté and the fact that you didn’t believe what 90% of people who were in the same situation at some point shows you’re closed minded and not open to listening. I get the feeling he either knows or suspects that he won’t make it to the end of this contract, let alone see a new one, so he’s trying to get the money now because his career is coming to an end sooner than people think.

That’s just crazy talk. Too much caffeine this morning?

First. Seattle doesn’t have a “great D-line.” Avril and Bennett are their best pass rushers, and neither had many sacks last year, or any in the SB. Avril left hurt in the SB.

Earl Thomas, Mr. 3 interceptions in 3 years, calls defensive plays. Where was he in the SB? It’s as if he wasn’t in the game. Zero production. He was no more hurt than Kam! Thomas couldn’t stop Amendola from catching a pass near the back of the end zone just a yard from him? Give me a break about Thomas being the best safety in the game. Hardly! Vastly overpaid. Kam does all the policing and Thomas knows it!

Real talk from a Seattle fan, not some homer nonsense.

Pay the man. He’s earned twice a mere 4.5M. He set the tone for the win against Denver in the 2013 SB. Not Thomas. Heck, Thomas nearly, and could have easily been called for 2 pass interference calls, that weren’t called when he failed to keep Denver receivers in front of him. The only thing that kept Denver from scoring was Manning’s passing being off.

    Lose the blinders.

Kam should fire his agent for 2 reasons. Signing the deal in the first place if he is so unhappy with the deal now and advising him to hold out. If Seattle has him pay the fines and I think they should – 1 million dollars of his year is wasted with this tactic. It sets an example for others not to hold out.

At this point, trade him to a bottom dweller team with no chance at competing for years like Jacksonville or San Francisco for picks and go and sign Mathis to help out that sieve of an offensive line.

All these idiotic Seahawk fans saying “pay the man” have no idea what a salary cap is or how it works and are brain dead and clueless in not being able to foresee the nightmare that that precedence would set among other players on the team. The second they renegotiated Kam’s contract, Bennett would hold out too. 56. granadafan says: Aug 21, 2015 11:31 AM

Players shouldn’t sign such long term contracts because the salary cap has been increasing every single year with no signs of leveling off. That means guys will be getting larger contracts. If their ego can’t stand that, then perhaps they ought to sign 2-3 year contracts only and then sign larger ones as the market increases (unless you’re a running back).

I’ll quote Jim Miller (former NFL QB) again, to NEVER sign a long-term deal. Bet on yourself to stay healthy and injury free. That way you’ll be able to negotiate a new contract every year. And if they tag you more twice, it’ll become cost prohibitive to do it the third time. Also, no one will be able to say, you need to honor your contract.

  63. competitivecompetitioncompeter says: Aug 21, 2015 3:11 PM

This holdout is an empty gesture, nothing more. Let’s say he holds out, into the regular season. Where’s the endgame? Show up week 11, willingly play 6+ games at your unacceptable rate of pay again, then hold out the following year again?

The idea of a holdout is that it’s a bluff that you’ll just sandbag out the rest of your contract til you hit free agency. That might work with just a year left and the bridge you’re about to burn almost in the rear view mirror.

Also Kam is a highly intelligent rational being, not a macho meathead. He knows it’s gonna be hard to make up a lost million (let alone a lost season’s $8M) over the life of the new contract he wants. At a certain point you can’t let your quest for more money turn around and net you less money.

I think the line will be when he has to start writing Paul Allen checks to pay back his forfeited signing bonus. At that point, not only is he “losing” the game checks he’d otherwise be earning (which is actually only an opportunity cost) to actually paying money for the privilege of not getting paid.

I’m sure strangely-not-former Bears QB Jay Cutler would disagree with that. The only reason he’s not backing up Geno Smith right now is because he caught the Bears FO between a rock and a hard place with his franchise QB level long term contract. They can’t cut him this season because they have to pay him $15 million dead or alive… did Jim Miller even make that much in his career?

Kam isn’t missing games. He’d be a fool too. Right now fans are a little annoyed but understand holding out of camp. He’s made his point. IF (BIG IF) he actually misses games then he will lose a lot of support from fans that he’s worked so hard to get. Team captains don’t miss games on purpose. I’d be stunned if he missss games. Don’t cross that line Kam! The Seahawks aren’t gonna give you a new deal you just signed couple years ago.

The only time the Seahawks gave new contact to a player (Marshawn Lynch) is because he had 1 year remaining on his contract. The Seahawks might redo a guy with 1 year left but 3-4+ years? They won’t. If they did this than everyone would be lining up at the GM’s door asking for new contracts with 3+ years left..
