Four-game suspension suggests multiple violations for Martavis Bryant in a year

AP

The new substance-abuse policy dramatically reduced the punishment for players who test positive for banned compounds like marijuana. Which means that more violations of the policy are now required to trigger a four-game suspension.

For Steelers receiver Martavis Bryant, the proposed four-game suspension means that the league believes he has violated the policy a second time while in Stage Two of the three-stage program.

Given the changes to the policy, the Steelers should be alarmed that Bryant already is facing a four-game suspension. It means that, only 16 months after he was drafted, he has failed to choose football over a banned substance on multiple occasions.

If he continues to not choose football over one or more banned substances, he eventually will face a 10-game suspension and, after that, a minimum suspension of one year.

The good news for the Steelers and Bryant is that, under the substance-abuse policy that was in place when Bryant joined the team, he possibly would be facing a one-year suspension now. The better news is that the new substance-abuse policy removes from Commissioner Roger Goodell or his designee final say over the punishment, with neutral arbitration available for Bryant to present any arguments he may have in support of the position that he didn’t violate the policy, this time.

Still, if he loses, Bryant could eventually be facing a one-year suspension — with a requirement to pass up to 10 tests per months in order to get reinstated.

  1. it could be a FIRST time violation for PED or HGH; and he did put on 20 pounds of muscle this off season.

I would assume that PFT would know this…..

A first violation will result in a suspension without pay of up to six games depending on the nature of the violation. Use of a diuretic or masking agent will result in a suspension without pay of two games. Use of a steroid, stimulant, HGH or other banned substance will result in a suspension without pay of four games. Evidence of an attempt to manipulate a test will result in a suspension without pay of six games.

  2. What happened to discipline here? Very sloppy indeed, are we the Raiders now? Clamp down and send a message to the others…

  3. And here I thought only the Ravens broke the law. At least that’s the word according to Squeeltown faithful.

You all better pray for Ol’ Bathrooms head, neck, shoulder, hand, wrist, arm, hip, abdomen, back, leg, knee, ankle, and foot because the next man up drowns innocent dogs in buckets.

  4. Make weed legal and be done with it.

Half the players are using it at one time or another.
It’s not addictive unlike the painkillers players use
to deal with the bumps and bruises. It’s not a
performance enhancing drug, it’s their way to chill out. Let them – there are worse things to worry about.

  5. For Pot?

But of course the NFL wants to shove pills down players throats to ensure they’re available to play in games. Such hypocrisy.

It’s not 1920. Pot could do players good. And less addictive than the pain killers the NFL is pushing.

  6. Bryant is about to learn what the phrase Not For Long league means. A couple years from now when he’s out of a job, broke, no degree to fall back on, his gravytrain posse gone, maybe he’ll grow up. Hopefully we taxpayers won’t have to foot the bill to house, clothe, and feed him three meals a day in his 4×6 cell.

  7. the fact you mouthbreathers are whining about it “just being pot” amuses me.

he knew the rules, he broke the rules, he suffers the punishment. I know football fans are dumb, but last I checked 1+1 was still 2

  8. ampatsisahypocrite,

This is why Watkins is better as a wr and better at life than Bryant. Maybe when Bryant gets booted from the league Sammy will pay him to do his laundry, you know just like the old days back at Clemson. The pathetic franchise you cheer for keeps crumbling.

  9. Suspend him for the 10 games, now. This coming from a fan.
Pittsburgh, as do all other teams in The NFL need to make a statement to their charges of zero tolerance for PED, Controlled Substance, Narcotics use Domestic Violence, Cheating and any sort of crime. Hell, It is my opinion college GPA’s should be a consideration before drafting (or an I.Q. test) just to help root out some of the problem children, regardless of their athletic ability.

  10. #1 RB-suspended 2 games
    #2 WR-suspended 4 games
#1 center-out at least half the season if not longer

That is a pretty big storm to weather to open the season IMO.

Maybe it’s about time Steelers fans stopped being so arrogant now.

You mad your team doesn’t have 6 SB’s bro?

  12. Looks like the Tebow curse was only the beginning. The karma is really tearing the team apart. Signing MIchael Vick on National Dog Day? HAHAHAHAHAHA. Bell is stoned out of his mind! Now Bryant is all roided up Dr. Ryzde style. You can’t make this stuff up. All of you who brought up deer antler spray, IN YOUR FACE. And make sure you bow to the statue when you come for your semi-annual beatdown. LOL.

  13. Tomlin just can’t keep these guys under control. he seems more concerned with being their buddy rather than being their coach.

  14. has an ex Steeler fan I hate to agree with. TebowedOf the postseason. but he isn’t wrong! the signing of Vic Tom and stepping on the field and all this other stuff that’s going on this isn’t the Steelers we used to know and love! it’s actually very sad that now the Steelers are on the same lines as the Raiders the Jets the Eagles… Everyone is laughing at us now!

  15. He hangs out with Wiz Khalifa and Chevy Woods… I saw this coming. Watch Wiz Khalifa’s DayToday YouTube episodes and you’ll see Martavius on one of the most recent ones

  16. Wow..he gets 4 games for that, and Brady cheats the game and gets the same? Typical slap on the wrist for the Patriots, no wonder they keep cheating.

Don’t worry. Roger has your back. He handed you a victory in week one by suspending Brady. Now if the Steelers lose that game then you are in trouble.

    Go Jimmy G

Well look who’s back after going into hiding after Bryant tore it up last year. So I guess if you can’t beat him at football, you resort to off-the-field stuff. Yes, after watching Watkins do Bryant’s laundry in the pros (not to mention struggle mightily to carry his athletic supporter) you’ve gotten all bitter and couldn’t wait to run over here. I get it. It hurts.

Here’s all that’s changed: for 4 games Watkins will get to be the best receiver from Clemson in the NFL. After that things will return to normal.

  19. Oh and one more thing corvuscrassirostris… keep in mind I wasn’t the jerk who started all this by coming in out of the blue and beating your chest about Watkins and that whole stupid “Bryant did his laundry in college” thing. Really? You really were so insecure you had to brag up a supposed all-worlder at the expense of a lower-rounder? Really?

I guess it hurt then watching some 4th round pick steal away all the headlines from your top-5 guy. Now we see how much!

And yeah, you better believe I gave it to you chumps once Bryant broke out last season… but hey, you started it. You deserved it. And what’s more, you ran away after Bryant kicked butt so you didn’t have to take your lumps like a man.

Which means you DON’T get to come back all gloating now.

  20. Watching Bryant totally fry the Buffalo defense shows which Clemson receiver carries whose laundry.

Enjoy the 4 games where your guy will rent the title of “best receiver to come out of Clemson,” Bills fans.
