Report: Several Washington offensive linemen dislike RG3

Robert Griffin III AP

As Robert Griffin III morphed from the rookie of the year in 2012 to a huge disappointment in 2013, questions started to be raised about whether his offensive line disliked him. At one point late in the 2013 season, it was observed that Washington’s offensive linemen hardly ever helped Griffin up after sacks, and reports out of the team’s locker room began to indicate that players were tired of Griffin’s refusal to take the blame when things went wrong.

Two years later, Griffin still doesn’t seem to be winning any friends in the locker room.

At today’s press conference, Griffin was asked about problems with the team’s pass protection. Although Griffin said he wouldn’t point fingers at his offensive linemen, he also didn’t put the blame on himself, even though many observers have pointed to Griffin’s lack of pocket awareness as a bigger problem than Washington’s offensive line.

According to Jason Reid of ESPN, Griffin sidestepping his own responsibility for making the line look worse than it played is exactly the kind of thing that causes him problems in the locker room. Reid wrote on Twitter after Griffin’s press conference that coaches say “several” offensive linemen dislike Griffin.

There seem to be two problems facing Griffin. The more important one is that he simply hasn’t played very well since suffering a severe knee injury at the end of his rookie season. But another problem is that he hasn’t shown that he has the leadership qualities that a quarterback needs. And until he starts playing better, it’s hard to see how he’ll be able to rally his teammates around him.

To think that Griffin’s OL are purposely dogging protection because of dislike is comical. OLineman are playing for contracts also. “Hey, I dont like Griffin, so I’m going to let this LB get by hit him so I can make less money”???

At this point, I can only hope that his guaranteed for injury contract isn’t on our books next season. I don’t doubt his skill set but both of us need a divorce from each other. I would strongly advice him to go to a small size market to save his career because his mouth will keep killing him in the media (and fan perception).

  30. whoisedgy says: Aug 27, 2015 2:36 PM

I remember two years ago, on this site, RG III was given the “power” to influence a name change for the Redskins. He certainly bought into the notion that he was the man in Washington. Someone forgot to tell him that influence in professional sports is earned on the field and not on Twitter, Facebook, or any other social media site.

  31. lingsun54 says: Aug 27, 2015 2:36 PM

    ——————————————————————-
RG finished his rookie year as the #3 rated passer. Luck was 26th. Since then they’ve moved in opposite directions.

  32. phillyphanatic77 says: Aug 27, 2015 2:37 PM

I remember watching RGIII in college and during his rookie campaign and thinking “Wow I hate that the Eagles have to play this guy for the next 10 years”… but since then his fall from grace has been kind of amazing. He has (or had) so much pure ability but no brain or leadership skills. I don’t think Shannahan or Gruden are blameless in his decline but RGIII needs a serious wakeup call. Maybe being released would jolt him into realizing he’s not the player he thinks he is? But Idk, it seems like he’s too thick to ever allow blame to be placed on himself.

Part of me is glad that the Birds don’t have to worry about him anymore but another part of me wishes he could’ve reached his massive potential; because at one point it did appear that he could be great.

  33. jackybadass says: Aug 27, 2015 2:38 PM

  46. edavidberg says: Aug 27, 2015 2:45 PM

In fairness, his pocket awareness had nothing to do with the hits he was taking in his last pre-season game. He had no chance back there.

  47. whispersd says: Aug 27, 2015 2:46 PM

My understanding is that there’s a consistent problem with RG3 being where he’s supposed to be. If the play calls for a 5-step drop, he might drop 3. If it calls for a 3-step drop, he might drop 5. He’ll throw to the wrong receiver when the #1 receiver is wide open. And he has terrible scrambling instincts that his legs won’t let him overcome any longer.

I don’t know if anybody can coach him to be an NFL starter.

The real news here would be if any of his teammates genuinely liked him.

    Dear RG3:

You have worn out your welcome. Please return to Waco and take your pops with you. You can sit under your statue at Baylor and come up with a new plan to polish that Greatness in your being. Cause it ain’t NFL football.

    Sincerely,
    Everybody

  54. realfootballfan says: Aug 27, 2015 2:49 PM

Yeah, the “reporter” said it so it must be true. Peyton Manning rolled his line after a playoff loss. It’s not about “friends.” He had the same surly attitude when he was at Baylor and was a rookie and fools were lapping him up, so I doubt this has to do with anything. I think most of us can see the line does suck and have been saying that for years, starting with when they foolishly wasted a top 5 pick on Trent Williams who is still mediocre, especially in pass protection.

  55. jimmyjamm03 says: Aug 27, 2015 2:50 PM

I commented a couple of days ago that someone ordered a “Code Red”. Apparently it was the entire offensive line.

They are going to keep letting him get pounded by opposing defenses until either his attitude improves or he is carted off the field with a season-ending injury. Given his history, I would go with the latter.

  56. schmitty2 says: Aug 27, 2015 2:51 PM

After watching that fiasco of a game against Detroit it might actually be better for the o-lineman to admit they dogged it because they don’t like RGIII because if they were truly giving 100% they don’t deserve to play in the NFL. One of the most pathetic attempts at protection I have ever witnessed.

  57. jrob23 says: Aug 27, 2015 2:51 PM

Let’s hope they are intentionally sucking because they dislike him. If not, wow, they are just terrible. Also, they are just following the coaches lead who pretty much can’t hide his disdain for RG3. It’s been such a toxic environment ever since they sent him back on the field to get hurt again in the playoffs. This is easily the worst franchise in the league

  83. jonevans511 says: Aug 27, 2015 3:18 PM

Jason Reid is a hack who is absolutely not plugged in with anyone close to the Skins. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the linemen don’t like RGIII, but guess what? People don’t like other people. I know, I know. Shocking. Pippen didn’t like MJ. No one liked/likes Kobe. Difference is when you’re a star you can get away with people not liking you.

RG- Be likable, and it’ll soften the blow when you choke. I just want to see you improve or hit the street, but I will NOT stand by why you hurt our team’s already shaky chemistry.

  95. FinFan68 says: Aug 27, 2015 3:35 PM

Two key facets of genuine leadership is to place others ahead of your own personal interests and having integrity. I have yet to see either quality in Griffin. He can try to fake it but it is easily seen and does more damage than good. Griffin does not want to nor does he think he needs to put forth effort. His attitude breeds contempt and it is not surprising that the guys responsible for his safety may not be giving it their all. I am sure they are doing their jobs but when it comes down to extra effort to protect him it simply isn’t going bto happen. If that same line blocks better for the other guys then you must blame the QB’s skills or his attitude. Once he gets hurt again he can display his shocked face and then slip into the inevitable blameless victim shtick. He better figure it out quickly because his first few opponents have some nasty defensive lines.

Too many people who comment on here NEVER played organized football. You don’t hear the negative comments about Griffin from people who actually played in the NFL. They recognize you cant judge the guy when the offensive line is this bad. Did anyone see the number one pick on the offensive line –Sherff–just get steamrolled into the quarterback? What are you watching? Joe Montana couldn’t have handled that. I’m no Skins fan but these comments are pure “piling on” by people who know very little about pro football. Very little.

Keep in mind this comes Jason Reid and therefore should be taken with more than a grain of salt. I am sure the Redskins coaches habitually schedule meetings with Jason Reid so they can tell him how much the O linemen dislike their QB. Get Real !!!! That guy has a a hidden agenda to tweet garbage like that up.

  103. phamlok says: Aug 27, 2015 3:55 PM

We have had one of the worst offensive lines in the league since before RG3. He made the line look good by running away from it in 2012. Zone blocking with an option based passing game and a helluva RB, perfect. No defense could rush the line because we had too many options/weapons. In 13′ & 14′ they changed up and try to make RG3 stand behind a line that can’t hold up. Now, he has more discipline to just stand there and take the hit vs running off or not adjusting his drop to the offensive lineman getting tossed like ragdolls. RG3 was fine when he didn’t have to rely on that terrible line. Cousins gets rid of the ball to the wrong team under pressure. BENCHED. Colt McCoy… INJURED.

  104. cfos00 says: Aug 27, 2015 3:56 PM

RGIII never holds himself accountable. He won’t get better because he doesn’t seem to recognize that he’s the problem. He also seems to still think he’s some kind of star, rather than a guy only in the league because the Rams bent them over in a trade. He’ll never get it, and won’t be in the NFL in two years.

The Redskin OL is Trent Williams, a struggling rook, and a huge steaming pile of trash everywhere else.

Those guys should just focus on being less than abysmal at their chosen vocation — instead of back-stabbing their QB.

What a mess that team has become since Snyder inserted himself. The ‘Skins won 3 Super Bowls in a 10 season span — and were one of the NFL’s flagship franchises. Now, their biggest headlines are broadcast by TMZ.

And our 2nd year right tackle didn’t play well because he’s not a fan of rg3? I guess our center Lichtensteiger is his buddy. He played real well. Jason Reid is just posting some old crap that’s meaningless because he’s a know it all.”
    =============================================
Well, clearly if you’re fighting for a roster spot like Trent Williams, you’re not going to dog it, and they wouldn’t fall in the “several” category. It’s called reading comprehension. It’s rather humorous to read homers bash journalists and call them names just because the journalist DARED to say something bad about THEIR team. I’d say they’re more in tune with the team than you are because they actually talk to players and coaches. How many have you talked to?

He and the Redskins need a break from each other. Unfortunately for the Redskins who gave up a lot for him they will get nothing in a trade due to his contract after they picked up his 5th year option. At least the Redskins can be happy in the fact the Rams did nothing with all the picks they got. They are still a losing team.

Why this is so stupid is that the linemen get graded everyday too. Do you think McCloughan is going to say,oh it’s cool. You don’t like Griffin. Here’s your paycheck, and we won’t be looking for your replacement? Do you think other teams that pick up the tape and have them isolated is going to say, oh it’s cool, it was Griffin. Let me get the contract ready. It’s lazy journalism because he was getting bum rushed by a superior defense in the Lions, and this just in, Austin has made that Lion defense pretty good with his scheme with or without Suh. It was just the best one in the NFL last year by many metrics. At the same time, the Washington offensive line has continued looking like an open door.

  121. getyourownname says: Aug 27, 2015 4:34 PM

RG3 is a lost cause right now, but what coaches would say such a thing? They are supposed to have their players’ backs.

If this report is true, it seems to indicate a major war is breaking out between coaches and ownership, which is still making personnel decisions despite all the pretense about Little Danny removing himself from operations. And you thought the Snyder-Shanahan friction was delicious.

  124. truths4all says: Aug 27, 2015 4:44 PM

Too bad RG3 is too immature to be a NFL QB yet. As a QB, you always take the blame and never hang your linemen out to take any blame.

Case in point, with just a few minutes left near the end of Denny Green’s last game as the Cards HC, Kurt Warner took a snap from under center for a running play at the 3 yard line. A TD would give the Cards a win while anything less would be a loss.

As Warner took the snap and began to turn to hand off the ball, one of the offensive linemen swung his arm wide and just tipped the ball loose. The fumble was recovered by the opposing team and the Cards lost.

During the post game interviews, Warner was criticized for the fumble while a few reporters saw the tip and wanted Warner to clear himself. Instead, Warner took full responsibility for the fumble and was roundly criticized by the media and clueless fans for being washed up and over the hill.

But what Warner really did was win over the lockerroom and set the stage for the Cards Super Bowl run.

    RG3, are you listening?

  125. laserw says: Aug 27, 2015 4:50 PM

I am a Redskins fan and have been afflicted with Burgundy and Gold fever since I was 8 years old back in 1970.

I have never hated or loathed any Redskin in my life.

    Then arrived the Great Gimmick.

Unlike many here, I actually did watch the Great Gimmick play during his college days. I was so unimpressed I thought maybe I was watching the wrong guy. What I saw was a selfish, arrogant, and undisciplined player who could run the ball and when it came to passing, there was no attempt to read a defense. He never was a leader. His ability to throw was all predicated on him being faster than the average college defensive player and they were slow enough getting to him that it appeared he had plenty of time to get the ball off.

When he became a pro, every weakness noted above has been exacerbated. He has been proved to have the LOWEST yards in the air passing of any of the QB’s on that team – most of GG’s yards come from yards after the catch; the most air yardage was Kirk Cousins.

If Redskins fans could take up a collection for a bounty for the Miami Dolphins to knock out GG, I’d love to help. I predict the Dolphins will take out the clown before half time and they will do so in a way that GG will be toast for the season. This is the best thing that could happen for the Redskins.

The Great Gimmick supporters ignore that he has lost 15 of the 19 games he started and finished during the last two years; when he is the QB offensive stats decline – he is a net drag on the team and could be possibly the best defense against the Redskins scoring touchdowns. Cousins has more passing yards, more passes over 20 or 50 yards on the team and has more passing touchdowns, fewer sacks per game; of course Cousins is intercepted more, but he is looking downfield trying to make a play; GG doesn’t put effort into passing and ends up being sacked and then fumbles; so the net net is Cousins and GG are both about equal on turnovers at the end of the game – how they turn it over is just different.

There is a profound reason why lineman would loath GG – he takes between 2.7 and 4.0 seconds to get rid of the ball; Cousins is 2.5 or less – and McCoy is under where GG’s average is. If you had to hold your block over 1 second per passing play each time he drops back, that is an additional 35 seconds of engaged time that you have to protect but shouldn’t. It is clear that blocking will be better for Cousins since he gets rid of the ball so quickly.

WHAT? Never should have been Rookie of the Year or have won the Heisman??? Oh C’Mon Man !!! That logic is simply “Hater’s gone insane !!” You want to take away his trophies when he made a significant impact with his skills at that time because he sucks now ?? Nobody said “squat” when they compared his statistics to Luck in both their rookie season and funny how Luck finished second to him in the Heisman voting as well. However, that was THEN and this is NOW ! He “earned” those two accomplishments just like he’s earned the negative evaluations he’s accredited now. Grow up !!! If his offensive line and apparently his head coach does to then it’s simply time to leave and maybe get a shot somewhere else. The best thing RGIII can do is “Shut Up” when the press ask him a “Set Up” question. (Press) “RGIII, do you consider yourself to be one of the top qb’s in the NFL?” (RGIII) “Next question??” Hey, nobody get’s misinterpreted, nobody has defend a distorted comment and everyone survives for another day to focus on playing football. Campbell and Griffin= 9 wasted seasons for the Redskins. Stop trying to find someone to revolutionize the position and get an NFL quarterback! Best season in recent times was actually 2011 when we had no big name free agents and had 2 quarterbacks making league minimum that costed 0 draft picks. 10 0f 11 starters on offense injured that year prevented us from being a decent team. That was how rebuilding should be done. Then we threw it all away again in 2012 draft.

It’s obvious to anyone watching that Jason Reid has a personal axe to grind with RG3. Yes RG3 sucks but I listened to the entire press conference and the only thing RG3 didn’t do was take out a sword and commit seppuku. On a team playing this bad, it’s comical that the QB is being tarred and feathered because he didn’t engage in that BS charade of blaming himself for ALL the problems…even though we all claim to be sick of the charade. RG3 is a mediocre QB but Jason Reid? He’s got it in for the guy. I listen to his ManCave show and he goes out of his way to take shots at RG3.

Personally, I can’t think of a more fitting team for RG3. Bad QB on a bad team owned by a meddlesome owner that’s so hated by his fellow billionaires they fined him $36M for doing nothing wrong!

Go read Jason Reid’s twitter timeline…you’ll think RG3 stole his girl.

I’m not necessarily defending RG3, but he hasn’t had the easiest situation. His coaches have all been staunch traditionalists when that doesn’t fit his style. Something like what Pete Carroll has going in Seattle with Russell Wilsion might fit better.

Second, Luck was just plain Luck-y. He landed in the easiest division in the NFL. The AFC South has had one good team for the last decade plus, and it’s the Colts. The Titans and Jags are the Titans and Jags, and Houston had a spectacular rise after the hiring of Wade Phillips – and collapse thanks to Rick Smith and Bob McNair’s ineptitude.

Yes, we all know how great JJ Watt is. But when Brian Cushing goes down that defense can’t function, and it happened two years running. Then there was the crippling of Schaub by Albert Haynesworth, and the QB scramble that followed. Now you’ve got Bill “wannabe Belichick with half the talent and no brains” O’Brien and Romeo “the Hutt” Crennel down in Houston. Houston is what it’s always been, a paper tiger.

If RG3 had landed on the Colts and Luck on the Redskins, things might be pretty different.

At least we did get in the playoffs with Robert his rookie season. The Rams drafted players and still suck ass. The RG3 is the best QB on the Redskins roster right now so live with it until he improves or draft another. Kirk and McCoy are backups only in this league. Once he started facing adversity his true colors came out. Never his fault, never his responsibility, didn’t you hear he was the best? The guy seems to have not learned how to deal with hardships. Probably never had to before. He certainly is not doing a good job of it.

  162. natedawg76 says: Aug 28, 2015 12:14 PM

You could see in his college footage that he was gonna get rocked before, during and after the throw…he might have world class speed but he was never elusive. Playing qb is not intuitive for him and it shows…someday the fascination with read-option quarterbacks in the NFL will go away and we won’t have to be bombarded with this bs. Personally, I don’t think there is a player in the league that would let another player interfere with their ability to secure employment….his linemen might not help him up after the play but I don’t think they are trying to get him crushed…he is quite capable of that all by himself.

  163. meekspirit1 says: Aug 28, 2015 1:08 PM

Two QB were so call pocket passer, so WTF yall talking about. Most of you don’t know football or ever played the game.

The coach is dysfunctional, Two thing we know about RG3, he can run (world Class Speed) and he can throw the ball (Cannon). The problem is the coach does not scheme or know how to work with the pieces he has, Gruden is an Idiot.
