Bills cut quarterback Matt Simms

AP

The Bills cut a quarterback who wasn’t going to be their starter, but not the really expensive one.

According to Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News, the Bills have waived quarterback Matt Simms.

The former Jets project was clearly fourth behind the three-headed monster of Tyrod Taylor, Matt Cassel and EJ Manuel throughout the preseason, so that part of it isn’t necessarily a surprise.

It remains to be seen how many they keep, and whether Cassel is one of them after losing the starting job to Taylor. Cutting him would save them $4.15 million in base salary, but it would cost them face also, after trading a pair of picks to the Vikings for the veteran.

But Simms was always the odd man out, so this was sort of inevitable.

Keeping Cassel to save face against lost picks is very Redskin-ish. Face it, it was a dumb deal. Live with it or cut your losses now and regret less later.

    Simms is good though

I’m pretty sure vikes were about to cut him back in March , Cassel

He might make it to the practice squad and they may still cut Cassel. Hard for me to believe Cassel should make this roster as a 3rd string QB at 4.5 million. EJ clearly beat him out for 2nd string. Will be interesting to see what happens.

They also don’t want Cassel going to a division rival with their playbook. You really think if Cassel’s free the Pats would keep Lindley?

  6. tardisjockey says: Sep 4, 2015 1:47 PM

It was a 5th and 7th in exchange for Cassel and a 6th rounder back. Cassel was clearly outplayed by the two other guys. What is there to save face over?

The 3rd string guy is inactive half the time, gets no snaps in practice except scout team, and is just there as emergency backup. When someone gets hurt, he plays that game and then is typically replaced with a real backup. Cassel doesn’t fit that well at 4.5M.

So does the mean they are down to 3 or 2 crappy QBs that nobody else would want?

Lindley was only there to back up Jimmy G in the event Brady’s suspension held up. Now that its been overturned, Lindley will be among the first ones cut.
    Pats wont carry 3 QBs

He’ll be waiting by the phone for when Rex calls him back. That’s his practice arm for hire.

Does this mean his Daddy is going to start complaining about it again?

  12. bryantrulen says: Sep 4, 2015 2:16 PM

I mean Cassell can still play, im not doubting him, but weve seen his ceiling, he was playing REALLY well preseason 2014, then he got hurt trying to run against the Saints Defense…

“Three headed monster”? More like three headed hamster.

Phil is going to be super-pissed!

If you saw that over the shoulder while spinning to the ground throw from last night, you’d cut him too.

He’s still probably better than his brother ever was…

this was a camp pickup so rex could pick his brain about the jets new offensive playbook (if bowles had anything in place by May when simms was cut)

Cutting Cassell should be a no brainer. He’ll find a backup spot in a heartbeat.

I’d take him anyday over Brandon Weeden.

You mean with all 12 offensive plays? This is a Rex Ryan team we are are talking about. Now their defensive playbook, that might be of interest.

Packer fan here. But I really think what is going on in Buffalo is amazing. I will even go out on a limb and say they will win the AFC East this year and represent their conference in the Super Bowl. Patriots? Their offensive line couldn’t stop a high school at this point. They better carry 10 QBs the way it is looking cause they are all going to get hurt by the time this season is over.

It’s funny how quickly the Bills went from not having a quarterback to having a “three headed monster”

  22. tinbender200 says: Sep 4, 2015 4:26 PM

    Like his father, a flop

He kind of sealed his fate when he threw that ball 20 yards backwards when he was getting sacked. Immediately what came to my mind was, well he just lost his job
