The Broncos think running back Montee Ball is a good football player. As of Saturday, he was good enough to have a spot on the 53-man roster. As of Sunday, not.

The team has announced that Ball was cut following the addition of center James Ferentz and tight end Mitchell Henry via waivers. (The Broncos also released center Gino Gradkowski.)

Ball, a second-round pick in 2013 who many thought would be the 2014 version of Julius Thomas in the team’s offense, was supplanted by C.J. Anderson. This year, Ball slid down the depth chart to the point where he was relegated to special teams. Which wasn’t a good sign for Ball.

Ball now hits the waiver wire. If he clears waivers, he’ll become a free agent.
