Linebacker Aldon Smith signed with the Raiders on Friday and he’s currently eligible to play for the team immediately, but that may not remain the case for too long.
Smith was released by the 49ers after an August arrest in Santa Clara and he was charged with three misdemeanors associated with that arrest on Friday. According to multiple reports, Smith faces charges of DUI with prior conviction and refusal to submit to chemical test, hit-and-run and vandalism. His arraignment is set for October 6.
In the announcement of Smith’s signing, Raiders General Manager Reggie McKenzie said that the team felt it can build an environment where Smith can succeed.
“We are confident that the Raiders provide an environment where Aldon can thrive through the support, structure and leadership within the building,” McKenzie said. “We are excited to have Aldon here in the Raiders family.”
It’s not clear what led the charges to be filed today, but the decision by the district attorney’s office to move forward may complicate the Raiders’ plans to have Smith on the field with Khalil Mack and the rest of their defense this season.
Smith denied driving under the influence of alcohol after his arrest, but apologized for “how it all played out.” Smith has two prior arrests for DUI, which contributed to the nine-game suspension he served last season.
