Mike McCarthy doesn’t want Packers trying to avenge playoff loss

The Packers host the Seahawks this week and that means there is going to be a lot of talk about the NFC Championship game from January.

That was the game that saw the Packers blow a 12-point fourth quarter lead with the help of a botched onside kick recovery by Brandon Bostick, who is no longer on the team, and ultimately lose to the Seahawks in overtime. While questions about the game and three losses to the Seahawks in the last three years are inevitable, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he won’t be banging the drum to avenge the loss this week.

McCarthy said he’s “raised the emotion” of teams too much in the past and believes that “too much of anything isn’t good” for a team that has ample motivation to win on Sunday night without thinking about the past.

“We’re playing at Lambeau Field [on] Sunday night football,” McCarthy said, via ESPN.com. “It’s our first home game. I don’t really think we need to get past that. I know who we’re playing; they’re an outstanding football team. They’re coming off a tough loss in St. Louis, but we’re focused on winning the game. We’re focused on getting our first home win, beating the Seattle Seahawks, and that’s about as far as it goes with us.”

There’s nothing the Packers can do to rewrite the ending of the NFC title game so taking the focus off of that makes sense, especially since moving to 2-0 will only help their chances of hosting the next edition of that game.
