Cowboys sign tackle Charles Brown

Tyron Smith used to serve as the backup to Charles Brown while the two played together in college at USC.

Now the roles are set to be reversed.

The Dallas Cowboys signed Brown and waived tackle Darrion Weems on Tuesday. Weeks has served as the backup to Smith and Doug Free during the Cowboys’ season opener against the New York Giants. Dallas needed additional help at tackle after waiving Jordan Mills on Monday, who they had claimed off waivers last week.

Brown played in just two games last season for the Giants after spending the first four years of his career with the New Orleans Saints. He’s started 22 of 39 games played in his career.

Brown was released by the New York Jets at the end of training camp.
